I've been using Zoner for years. I had version 15 installed and regret uninstalling it for 16. (Zoner allows more than one version to be installed concurrently.) Zoner 16 does not run reliably. One day it works and the next it does not. Some days, if I keep clicking on a photo it will open a process in task manager but never actually show me the program. If I click the photo 10 times it will open ten processes in task manager. The next day, this may not happen at all and the program operates fine.

As mentioned in comment 80, when Zoner actually works, the process stays in memory even after the program is closed. Unlike comment 80, I can close out Zoner in task manager.

Zoner has been my favorite photo manager/editor for several years now. I'm sorry to say that I'll have to move away from it.

For some reason after using this program it remains in the memory and will not go away even when using task master and/or process lasso. It also wrecks my internet to the point it will not run until I reboot my computer. While I like this program the net crash is a game changer for me.Oh yeah I use the Waterfox 64 derivative of Firefox.

This was informative. The other day I send 3000+ pictures from my vacation with Binfer. No Kidding. It’s a amazing tool for sending pictures with ease. More http://www.binfer.com/solutions/tasks/send-large-files.

Hello,

Back after a good night's sleep and a fine European morning spent answer your questions to our Support line. The answers below only go up to question #76, but more answers from me will be coming later on.

On to your questions!

@sgrams (#42) - I missed this earlier. Yes, the program's own uninstallation program is careful to remove leftovers that take up any significant space, as long as you check the checkboxes for doing that during the uninstall.

@Suzanne (#51) - Unfortunately I am still not quite sure what you are seeing. I'd like to ask you for a screenshot of the situation - please drop us a line at zoner.com's support@ address.

@Bob R (#52) - with no layers in Zoner Photo Studio, and with the JPEG format not having support for transparency, it's deliberate of us to not have a Cut command, as it could cause confusion. But you can always copy and then delete. To copy the selection, use Edit > Copy. To delete the selection, press the
Delete key.

Dedicated photo-editing software, unlike photo managers such as Zoner, tend to have layers, etc., thus the difference.

@Terry E (#53), the way that Default Program management works in windows - which is what we use, instead of some custom solution of ours - does not include a concept of UN-making things default, but only MAKING things default. So go to the Windows Control panel and MAKE thing that you want to be default, be the default.

You're very-much NOT alone in expecting that this UN-making exists... but it does not.

The 32-bit (unmarked) and 64-bit (x64) icons are for running the 32- and 64-bit versions of the program respectively. The 64-bit version is superior in most ways, but does not have the Integration with Google Earth feature. The 32-bit version is vice-versa. The short answer is: use the x64 version.

@Howard Berman (#54): Integrate into Windows adds ZPS-related items to Windows right-click menus.

@Jacal (#55): We had a forum in the past, and had bad experiences with unbelievably persistent and high-volume (1000-to-1 vs. ham) spamming, insufficient usage, and none of the hoped-for user-to-user help. Maybe we will try again in a few years, but we were really soured on it by that.

Quick Search is designed to be quick and also simple - no twiddlies for custom information fields - utilized by only a tiny portion of our users - are planned for the Quick Search box.

The timestamp changes are necessary for the nuts and bolts of how the RAW module works. No changes in how Zoner works on this front are planned.

I am sorry I don't have more accommodating answers for you here. :-) Ultimately we have to balance things between the power users and the broad public, and generally that lands in power users' disfavor, simply because even as it is, we're seen far too often as being too complicated.

@janet (#56), @Just_Pa55ing_Through (#60): The differences between builds 7, 8, and 9 are small - they are minor bug fixes.

@BobbyA (#57): If layer or layer-like (perhaps sidecar-based history-list) support is added in the future, it will be in version 19 at the earliest, as version 18's development schedule is already full-up without the extremely major task of adding layer or layer-like support. But we don't have a moral objection to layers or anything like that. We definitely won't have a Zoner format like Adobe does with their PSD, however.

Zoner Photo Studio does not have support for bypassing the camera and saving pictures directly on your computer hard drive in a folder you have designated, as tethering seems to be. (I hadn't heard of it before, I confess.)

@Woodrow Pea (#58): Yes, you can adjust colors in this program on a batch basis. To do that, select the multiple pictures you want to adjust, and then use the adjustment command in the Manager that you want to use. All the photos then get listed on the left of the editing window, and all of them get adjusted when you click Apply to All.

@Buzz (#61) - Please write us at zoner.com's support@ address.

@Sam Hell (#65) - You are free to uninstall or not-uninstall your older version. Zoner Photo Studio does not auto-uninstall older versions when you install newer versions, since some people like to keep their older ones. If you'd like to uninstall version 14 to save disk space, use the Uninstall item in the Windows Start menu for that.

@Emil Kučera (#66): Buďte zdrav! No - the different builds practically only rarely add new features (they are really about fixing bugs). The Color Theme option should be there. If it just is not showing up for you, please drop me a line at support@. Send a screenshot too if you can. I think we've been in touch before, actually!

@Pib (#68) - For the answer to this, check the end of comment #18.

@Allie Oops (#73) - The giveaway package does not include 7zip.exe. Based on this, and some other abnormal things you ran into, such as a request for a password, your experience seems unusual enough that I don't think I should comment on it, as I'm not sure what you were working with and what actions you took. However, I will note that yes, the giveaway version does require provision of an e-mail to use it - that's a condition of the giveaway. I thank you for your understanding on this!

@Vermeilia (#74): To compare before and after an edit before you apply it in the Editor, click the magnifying-glass-over-a-square button next to the Apply button at the bottom right.

@RichNYC (#75): Unfortunately I'm not certain what you mean on this. Can you write in to me on this one to zoner.com's support@ address, and include screenshots along with your question? That will help to shed light on things.

@itdontwork (#76): Should Zoner happen to release further bug-fix releases after build 9, these WILL NOT break your giveaway.

Just to make it clear does todays Giveaway license accept bug-fix updates in the future or not? I would like to know if I should uncheck the auto update feature or not. Trasd's response to #3, to me any ways, didn't get a clear enough answer in #18 about if there is an allowance or not of future updates to the current GOTD version of Zoner Photo Studio 16 Pro, where sometimes updating undoes the Giveaway nature of the license and replaces it with a trial version of the license after updating in the future, if there happens to be any future updates with the current SW.
Thanks for the help if there happens to be an answer.

When I open ZPS16, it shows thumbnails of all of the images in my computer. When I open ZPS14, there are no open images. How do I set ZPS16 to show no images when I open it like my ZPS14? I only want to use it for specific images that I will manually choose.

I have loved Zoner software for years so I was naturally interested in getting this latest version. But I hope no other GOTD member has to go through what I did! (I am writing this in case somebody did, and is timid about bringing it up.)

First off, the interface that downloaded (what purported to be) Zoner 16 looked quite odd, much different from the usual GOTD offering. And it asked a few questions before allowing me to download. When I finally was able to download, the package was called 7zip.exe.

Once I downloaded this, I got an immediate warning from my AVG antivirus... THIS is a program you DO NOT WANT! (AVG called it a "Generic.742," whatever that may mean, and said it was Adware). Then I noticed the size of the download was only a little over 2 mb. I knew the Zoner package should have been much larger than that.

So I decided to again try downloading Zoner 16. It seemed to load OK, and I went thru the usual routine selecting "Custom" instead of "Express"... but twice more I got virus warnings from Antivir and one other unrecalled program. I decided to ignore them. I knew, and still believe, Zoner is safe.

But when I was informed by Zoner that their program would not give FULL functionality unless I logged in with my email address AND password, I hesitated. Surely they meant I should "make up" a password and use that, right? Nope. They sent me an email clearly showing THEY WANTED my actual email address AND its password!

Zoner, I still love your software... but I must tell you... my email password is PRIVATE. And I don't give it out to anyone, for any reason.

#16,20 & 27. If you have Kapernsky Anti Virus and I am running Windows Vista the Kapernsky must be turned off to Run the Setup File. It then installs correctly. I had a previous version not presently installed and in my humble opinion it is one of the best Photo Programs available, better yet when it's FREE. 2 thumbs up.
Thank you GAOD for making this available again.

I installed vs. 15 when it was last offered and, honestly, wasn't too impressed with it. But I decided to give 16 a shot. The install was really easy. I did the Custom install as I always do that if it's available. Everything, including registration, went without a hitch on Win 7 Home Premium. The interface looks much nicer. I'm looking forward to testing this version. Thanks for offering it!!

Hi, I'm so glad I didn't miss this Offer even at such late hour!:) I'm also a fan of Zoner and have few earlier versions intact (it's allowed) Much had been said about this Software in a past and today (starting with clever 'enough' from Karl, lol), so I'll only add what I like (among other Features in it's Toolbox), that is - a generous choice of 'Lasso' tools and 'Elliptical Selection', dropped by Corel PSP in later versions for instance (why?) All in all - thoroughly decent Program!!

Thank You GAOTD and Zoner Software for this fab Gift!

I have a paid-for PRO version, says Build7, and checking for updates says "no new upgrade available", yet the one offered today you say is Build9. Is that why there is no "color theme" item in my Settings-Preferences? Should I download today's and install it over to get it? Eric?
(Or maybe just upgrade :-)

1. Today's giveaway is Build 9 of Version 16. Perhaps you have Build 7 of version 17?

2. For color theme: Settings-Preferences-Appearance-Color theme. Color Theme is at the very top of the Appearance page. I HIGHLY recommend 'Light'!

Erik thank you for responding. Continuing from #38
As a suggestion you could handle it the way photoshop does. If a user select selects to as a TIFF you can keep the layer information, if you elect to save as a .jpg the image is automatically flattened and the layer information is discarded. BTW photoshop's native is neither .tif nor jpg. Both of these are widely supported allowing your workflow to go on to somewhere.

Does this version (16 Pro) support tethering directly from the camera ?
Or does it support tethering (actually raw import processing) via a hot folder ?

Reply   |   Comment by BobbyA  –  9 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

BobbyA, The reason photoshop (also GIMP) do not use .tiff or .jpg as a native/default image type is because both are used for totally different things. Since editing softwares are used for a variety of different things, both online and in print, having either of these as the native/default format would cause a lot of extra work. You set up your file as RBG for web and CMYK for print. Then, when you save the file, you choose what file type you need, depending on what you are using the image for. If I am doing web images, a default .tiff cannot be used online. If I'm doing print, .jpg is nowhere near as high resolution as I would need. These programs save to their own "type" by default so you can finish the image as you need. And, BTW, in today's online imaging, .png is the best choice as it has more resolution than .jpg and can be animated with much more resolution than the old .gif has and still be a relatively small file (if you know how to compress). :D

@ Erik (#38)

That is why I'm missing a Zoner user forum; it would mean additional work, of course, but you would get requests, even more picky than mine, and also some useful information, I believe.

About custom metadata fields not being covered by quick search: I have, for instance, portraits, tagged with -xmp-dc:Type, some with -XMP-photoshop:SupplementalCategories, and some with a keyword (-xmp-dc:Subject); I have added the first two tags as custom information, but since quick search doesn't look there, I have to wait (sometimes quite long) for search window to open and then, in text tab, put "portrait" in three different fields. I can then save this search though, which is better than nothing.

About experimental boolean feature: I dropped you a line.

About changed timestamps of raw images: When I import cr2 files from camera, I usually add some metadata (like correct Sigma lens info) via ExifTool(GUI). After that, the only program that can fiddle with this files is Canon's DPP - I don't use it often - that writes his "recipes" and changes last-modified dates. So when I notice some cr2s with changed dates, I have to check manually, what has happened, to find out, it was the old Zoner, and the file wasn't changed at all. Most often my sync or backup programs find those "changed" files. So I would simply like Zoner to keep it's hands away from raw files.

Thank you for your many kind answers, have a nice - although busy - day!

I think it goes without saying that like many on here, I love the look and feel of Zoner and am glad to have it back on my PC, BUT.....

Settings - Preferences - Integration and select file associations does nothing.
ALL the files are greyed out and they will not un-grey therefore all my pic files are locked to Zoner.
Looks like I will have to perhaps remove and re-download OR associate all files in ANOTHER photo program in the hope that it dislodges them from Zoner.
Not too impressed. Windows7 x64. (Also why do I get TWO Zoner Icons on my desktop -One 32bit and one 64bit)?

Reply   |   Comment by Terry E  –  9 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Terry, Since there's still time, uninstall and reinstall using the Custom installation and uncheck the option to have Zoner be the default for all image types. If you don't do this in time, have you tried checking the preferences of an image you want to open in another app and selecting that app? That's how I usually correct this issue when it's happened to me with other programs. I use Photoshop and when I installed GIMP, I didn't choose to not have it be my default image viewer. But I found an image and changed the prefs to Photoshop and that fixed it.

A very good assortment of features but lacking some important ones I use all the time.
1.Add a fill-light adjustment tool (as Picasa 3 has).
2. Add a "cut" selection to edit menu when using selection tools
--I don't understand why Photo Studio lacks this as many other photo-editing programs have it
(i.e. just make a rectangular selection from photo and then cut it out.)
The cropping tool is difficult to use and no substitute for this.

Reply   |   Comment by Bob R  –  9 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Bob, Not sure what is causing you to not be able to do this. All photo editing software allows you to delete a selected area with the lasso tool (rectangle, circle, freehand ...). Be sure you're in Edit mode (top right of the menu). I used the rectangle lasso and hit the delete button and it cut out that portion of the photo with no issues. https://picasaweb.google.com/116376340382519200655/PUBLIC

@drvajra (#43) - Yes! You can change the black appearance. To do that, go to:

"Settings" menu > "Preferences..." item > the "Color Theme" control.

@adif (#45) - Sorry for skipping you before. Sometimes I feel too heavy-handed with these answers and so I try to skip what it looks like I "can" skip, and you seemed to have wrapped things up.
Zoner Photo Studio DOES have a way to auto-add EXIF text into various contexts. Not every context, but all the important ones are there. EXIF info can be used for the Place Text feature, in print templates, to fill other EXIF fields during batch EXIF editing, etc. The way to use this ability, when it's there, is to use our "formatting strings" feature. That feature uses codes in {curly brackets} to fill EXIF data into text. You can hand-write those {codes}, but you don't have to. To get a window for adding Formatting STrings, click the small triangle button at the right end of any text box that accepts them. No triangle button in a certain box? No Formatting Strings support for that box.

For detailed info on Formatting Strings, see the in-program help topic on this subject.

I'm not certain offhand if the IPTC location field (which you seem to have in mind) is usable via our Formatting Strings, but it probably is.

@Suzanne (#46): I'm worried I may be misunderstanding your meaning - do you mean that the Pictures folder of a different user on your computer is shown in the left column in the Manager, in the "My Pictures" section of that column? Or have I misunderstood you?

It is an absolutely amazing program.
It is a superb photo browser but it is one of the best photo editors around.
Whether you are an amateur or professional photographer, the photo editing features of this program are incredible and simple to use.

Press the icon that looks like a lightening flash: then on your keyboard press Shift & o. This shows the 'blowout' of the photo...ie: the over exposed (too bright) and under exposed (too dark) parts of your photo.
Use the 'Darken Highlights' or Brighten Shadows' sliders to adjust these areas (press Shift & o again to view your original photo).
Your photo will start to 'Pop Out' in front of your eyes and you will see detail that was hidden.
This is the foundation of most of my photo retouching and Zoner Photo Studio makes it so easy.

Seems like a pretty nice software package. I like the image browser particularly. I haven't played with any of the editing tools yet but they seem to have a good solid number of choices. I typically use PhotoShop for image manipulation so I don't know how this compares in that regard but as an image browser it's first-rate.

Thanks Zoner and GAotD.

I just wanted to say thank you for this. I used to use paint shop pro but have not had the time for that lately and have changed 'puters a few times since I started working with it. This looks like it is going to be fast and easy - a good thing when you are the working mom of a High School Sophomore with lots of photo opportunities. I took a quick look at it after I installed it and although I have not had the time to really play with it there does not appear to be a big learning curve for this. Thanks GOTD!

My very first post, after a dedicated GOTD user for years and years. Couldn't pass up this offer, especially after reading Karl's extensive review (loved that). My question is this .. there are 2 separate (by this I mean it's none of my business what's on his and it sure isn't any of his business what's on mine). After installation, and upon opening Zoner Photo Studio 16 Pro, in the top left hand corner, it doesn't show ME, instead, it shows the other computer user. Just why is this and how do I change it? Erik w/Zoner, please respond. Thanks much in advance and Thanks very much for the offer.

To Erik, can you please comment on #33?
Can Zoner batch add selected EXIF data on the images ?(by making copies of course...)
I think it should be part of such program.

Like Karl say's "My shortest comment: Take it!" I have to agree, Zoner Photo Studio is an excellent photo management/editor.
Thank you very much for this giveaway and this GOTD version is 16 (Build 9) PRO a new build.

If anyone is interested you can find some Zoner extras here https://www.zoner.com/en/free-photo-editor-download
Full manual in PDF/Photoframes and Templates/GhostScript/DNG converter for better RAW processing/WIC Codecs.
Note When installing frames remember to change location C:\Program Files\Zoner\Photo Studio 17 To Photo Studio 16.

I noticed that you can change the URL version number for the templates pack to get version 16 templates.

On that note and as a message to the developer, does it make a difference if template pack v17 is installed for this version 16 software?

Hi guys - me again - (Dual boot Win 8.1 & 10) did a few pics with Zoner & in Win 10 no prob & same in Win 8.1. I am able to share the documents, because - unlike Karl - I am using a single notebook with 2 - 1 TB internal drives & #1 is partitioned (thanks to an earlier giveaway) 1st partition is Drv C: (Win 8.1) 2nd partition is Drv F: (Win 10) & the whole 2nd drive is Drv E: - What I have been trying to do is ?share? the program between both OS's (only error I have been getting is when I have to overwrite the Drv E (This is where I keep almost all GOTD downloads after installation) & SO FAR - except a couple of problems with another software - Zoner is liking Win 10 & is "seeing" all the pics as long as they are saved on Drv E. This is NOT virtual, it is real world - (I have a little problem with copying to the "other" OS drive, because it seems that 8.1 & 10 won't "show" the files unless they are "created" under that OS - anyways - for the last few weeks (except for Star....) ALL programs are liking this situation & this program "Keeping, after reboot (lol - sry Karl). Thanks GOTD & Zoner - HAGD

@Grum Pah (#34): The Giveaway version does not need a license code and thus does not come with a license code - it's simply automatically unlocked to PRO. That's why no license is shown.

@Ron (#35): I'd like to ask a favor of you - can you drop me a line on this to Zoner's "support@"? I say "favor" because I know I should just make the note myself, but I am having trouble keeping up as it is, what with the Giveaway rush. Drop me a line and we'll work on this with you!

@sgrams (#39) I'll leave the Revo-based answer to any Revo experts here. But the standard answer is to just use the "Uninstall Zoner Photo Studio 15" item in the Windows Start menu, making sure to check all the box for "also delete this-and-this" during our uninstallation process. That will clear away a little extra clutter that you won't be using. (Version 15's Catalog and the like.)

JFC (waving in passing) - good to see you still in Zoner orbit even though we went a different way than you'd like on Manager customizationability. Which is totally a word. Thank you for stopping by!

I installed this giveaway but I would like to uninstall version 15, Revo uninstaller didn't recognize any Zoner programs to uninstall, how may I do an uninstall with Revo one of my favorite uninstallers to keep my system clean?

Regarding Vadym Mykhaylyuk again: I forgot that PSP stopped being just a paint program ages ago, so my comment was rather off the mark.
Ultimately the reason why Lightroom, PSP, Zoner, and more are organized around the steps in the photo workflow is like the reason why phones are square (just like the iPhone!) - it's because it works.

@Chopped Liver (#23): As long as your ZPS says "PRO" instead of "TRIAL" towards the top right corner, you have PRO, and that will remain PRO, even after 30 days. No pumpkins!

@BobbyA (#25): I have to confess I didn't know about this capability in TIFF. But since most people will be saving to JPEGs and expecting things to "just work," in the end we're back where we started.
Ultimately there are solutions out there such as sidecar files, but that still has us essentially trapping your edits "inside" Zoner, which is not really where we want to go. (Granted, we do exactly that for RAW development settings - there we do use sidecar files... but only because we have to.) Still, power users' wishes in this area are on our mind every day, and we're always thinking about it.

@Jacal (#26, #29): Our classical search is slow because it's filesystem based. Quicksearch is fast, but it is based on the program's "Catalog." To make sure your files get seen by Quick Search, catalog the folders where your pictures are. To do that, use Settings > Preferences > Catalog... .
It's true though that Quick Search doesn't cover custom metadata fields. This is the first time we've ever been asked about it, though.
The Boolean OR you asked about ("dng OR cr2") may work via an experimental power-user feature - if you're interested, drop me a line at support@.
Regarding file processsing in Zoner affecting RAW files' last-modified dates - what are you using these time stamps for? If it's for date-taken info, that should be drawn from the metadata in any case.

How did I end up writing that?

I purchased version 14 and have recently upgraded to pro version 17. I liked it because it used raw data. You can upload to facebook, flickr, etc. It does a great job with sepia conversion. It lets you create panoramas, slide shows, create calendars. It is feature rich and has great tutorials. I also added the Retouch Pilot plugins. I use Twisted Brush for drawing/painting and also have PSP, but this is the best photo editor/organizer.

I started out with version 15 as a gaotd and loved it so much when 16 came out I purchased a whole house license for it. Both the wife and I love V16 and use it daily. I shoot a lot of photographs of folk instruments I make for folks and for use in my store listing photographs. The the wife uses it on pictures for her website and social networks. We have it installed on four Win7 systems and works perfectly as advertised. They also have some great tutorials on youtube. The customer service after purchasing has been fantastic and they have quickly replied quickly to all inquiries I have sent them. I highly recommend giving this one a test drive. For me it had somewhat of a learning curve but there's lots of tutorials at their youtube channel to show you how to do just about everything. Very professional tutorials.

Anybody up and running on Windows 7 64-bit? I installed the program and when it starts up, all I get is a greyed-out startup screen that won't allow me to click anything. Anyone else having this problem?

Reply   |   Comment by Ron  –  9 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-4)

I am and it's working fine. I noticed that it installed both 32 and 64 bit versions. I tried them both and can't see a difference, but whichever one you're running, you might try the other.

Reply   |   Comment by Dan  –  9 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Ron, I am also on Win 7 64-bit, Zoner will place 2 icons on desktop "Zoner Photo Studio 16" and "Zoner Photo Studio 16 x64" try to click the x64 icon, and if that does not work, you may have to right-click on the icon and "Run as administrator"

Can this GOTD batch print GPS data/location name from the EXIF on the picture?
The Panasonic DMC-ZS30 store names in the EXIF.

I just found that, this zonar 16 do not import this data automatically.
It display it in the EXIF but it do nothing with it. You must copy>paste it...
The freeware irfanview can handle it (but not in batch mode at the moment)

Hi, thanks for this, great program. However, after following ReadMe instructions, I still don't have a license key, even though it told me the program was activated. Do I NEED a license key or is it fully activated without that? And if I DO need an activation key, what do I do? Thanks again!

Reply   |   Comment by Joan from Boston  –  9 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Joan - I'm guessing that you saw the little GOTD box with the 'successfully activated' message. As far as I can tell it always says that when your installation completes, whether you're actually activated or not, as is the case here.

To complete this activation you need to open the program, wait a few seconds, and it will pop up a box where you enter your email. Now when you click 'activate' you'll have it.

Reply   |   Comment by Dan  –  9 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Thanks Dan, I tried that but it doesn't result in populating the license key section and I don't see this transaction listed in the Zoner accounts under the email name I used. Should I be seeing an actual key code after I give them my email or doesn't it matter?

Every time I terminate the program it wants to create a startup entry. I have a startup monitor that intercepts the request, letting me deny it.

For something that will be sporadically used, I don't want it running all the time. Is there a way of suppressing this program behavior?

I love using Zoner 15 for photo organization and viewing, I have not tried this version 16 and look forward to trying it, my only recommendation for improvement is making the zoom function more user friendly, at current its push button to zoom in which makes for fragmented zooming 25x,50x,75x,100x -- comparative to other programs that utilize slider bars for zooming or pan and scan technology; Zoners Zoom feature falls short.
