Hey Giveawayoftheday,
Thanks for the info, As technology budgets continue to remain stagnant (IDC expects only a 2.6 percent increase in spending this year), companies need to find - and eliminate - the hidden software costs that can drain IT funds.

Registration code I received was incorrect. Tried their support, but did not receive an answer. That's not the support I expect and, considering that they are trying to promote their product, that says a lot about their policy.

I downloaded yesterdays give away, but didnt unzip the file, now it says the offer expired. I didnt if I should delete it from my computer. It was a video converter platinum. I have tried other converters and was not very happy with the way they worked, I dont mind buying one, but I also dont want to waste money on something I dont like or doesnt work for me. Thank you, George Berenyi

Same as others - tried multiple times sending in the email to get the keycode but, nothing. and yes, i checked the spam folder.
It's 1 a.m. here so the giveaway is running out of time..a shame, i would've liked to try this one out.
Perhaps wondershare can give this away again tomorrow because of all the reg probs?
Just a thought.
Thanks anyway...

Hi,
I hope someone can help me. I have installed GOTD programs before with no problems, but I have NOT been able to install yesterday's or today's. I have windows 7 (64 bit). When I run the startup (install) program, it tries to connect to the server then gives an error "could not connect, try again later" I have 1) disabled the virus checker AVAST (2 Disabled windows firewall 3) re-enabled windows firewall, but ADDED the installer to the approved list.

I am out of ideas. Help anyone?

#1 - Have been working with GAOTD many times, Wondershare as well. There just appear to be problems with this one. Put my email address in the "Get Keycode" window to be informed my email address was invalid. Yet, going to the website in the Readme, entered same email, was sent a Registration code at that email address. However, tried to enter and was informed it was an invalid registration. I will just delete and hope for a better one in the future and put a negative check next to Wondershare in my recommendations list.

The installation went smoothly with no problems. I received the keycode in an email moments after requesting it.The program has a beautiful and professional looking interface and is packed with useful features. I tested it twice with 2 different video clips and in both cases the quality was very good. Overall the program a great interface and and works really well. I can live with a advertising that initially appears in the left pane, and then disappears when you add a video. I figure its a small price to pay for software that looks this good and works this well.

I got a quick email back with my activation code. But, as soon as I try to input my email or activation code, the activation screen closes and nothing happens. This is the same thing over and over. No error message, just click in the box to type and it disappears.
Not too good but what did I expect for free?

An update to the not getting the registration code. I had provided two of my very legitimate email addresses from a very large, well known broadband provider and received nada back. I finally tried my gmail account and the code was sent instantaneously. While I'm happy this worked out it still begs the question of why the other accounts seem to be off of Wondershare's radar. I suppose that "all's well that end's well" but this has been frustrating to say the least.

What is up with getting the email code? I also have been waiting for hours for any response and nothing. The Web site indicates that the code has been sent but it is not showing up even in my spam folder. Why are some people getting the code but not others? This doesn't make sense. The clock is ticking on the offer and I would really like to try this software.

Installed fine on Win 7, but wouldn't load any of my dvr-ms files, even though it says that's a supported format. Was able to convert them to .avi with another converter, and the .avi files would load fine, but obviously having to use another converter first defeats the purpose.

#47: "It worked well in joining and converting my revent wedding video but the screen size seemed to be 4:3 and I can’t see a way to set it to 16:9."

Sometimes that's a consequence of the encoder settings -- other times if the source is anamorphic, like DVDs, converters for some reason often get it wrong -- with most all of the ones that are offered on GOTD you can change settings in the same dialog window where you crop.

I think Wondershare's Video Converter Platinum is pretty much a mixed bag -- something that could be a good addition to your video toolkit, but not IMHO a great choice if you want just one video conversion app you'll use for everything. It uses Mainconcept encoders, which includes one of the best mpg2 encoders available, but Video Converter Platinum fails to take full advantage of it -- e.g. mpg2 video for DVDs [where the Mainconcept encoder really can shine] lacks variable bit rate or pulldown [pulldown is a method used on commercial DVDs, letting you use 24 fps video for less compression & higher quality]. Despite not using the QT code that speeds up rival converters dramatically, Video Converter Platinum is still pretty fast -- OTOH it would be faster yet if it used more than one CPU core. Importing video files is one area where Video Converter Platinum may have an advantage, offering options for both Direct Show & Media Player, which may mean you can open videos you wouldn't be able to in most other converters -- there however using their Media Player option altered the original colors of the video, similar to Vivid filters or modes in apps like PowerDVD.

Installing Wondershare's Video Converter Platinum has 1 gotcha right off the bat, & that's the *partial* installation of AC3 filter -- I'd recommend installing one of the regular versions of this free software afterward so you get the controls that should be there... AC3 Filter can conflict with other apps &/or AC3 decoders, the controls that come with it let you set when/where it works & doesn't, & using those controls you can also tweak the way AC3 playback sounds. Besides AC3 filter, 3 other files may be added to Windows system folder: iconv.dll, WS_VideoConverterContextMenu.dll, & xvid.ax [that xvid file doesn't have a version #, so may want to (re)install the latest Xvid to be sure]. The "Video Converter Platinum" program folder holds 227 files, 11 folders, ~98 MB -- this is one video converter where the PortableApps.com App Compactor doesn't work, at least at default settings, causing Video Converter Platinum to silently crash, so you may be stuck with that 98 MB. New folders are also added to My Documents, Common Files, & User Application Data & Local Settings Application Data [XP], or User AppData Local & Roaming [win7]. I recorded ~350 new registry entries, many for AC3 Filter.

I had a previous version of this from GOTD. Offered to uninstall and did. Setup went very well, received registration code instantly.
I also don't like the add on the page as it's a little harder to get to the settings. Once set works as well as the previous version. Seems to move a bit faster than the original. Merges files whether they are being converted or not (the previous version didn't) Converted a file the previous version couldn't.
Overall very happy with this version.
Only real complaint I've found as yet is that add!
Thanks GOTD!!!

Downloaded and installed. I received the registration code immediately. Used the little 'gear' icon to choose output format. Converted a couple of videos to MKV format. Easy to use. The ad in the left (file selection) area is annoying. It disappears after you select at least one file, but then reappears after you remove all files from the file selection area. The ad would not be nearly as annoying if it did not reappear the second time.

GAOTD programs are supposed to be exactly the same as the paid versions of the same name. I wonder if the paid version of this program also has the ad for the ultimate version. If not, then this could be considered a special 'adware' version violating the terms of the GAOTD program.

XP SP3
version 5.1.4

installs a "helper", 2.5 MB, into \Program Files\
(looks to be of no value to me)

installs (registers?) four "filters", 2 MB into \Windows\system32\

otherwise, program installs to directory of your choice, clocking
in at a paltry 100 MB.

"get keycode" opens IE, regardless of your default web brower.
DUMB.

registration itself was initially a bit confusing. (i did not
allow JavaScript on wondershare.com, & it was needed for the get
keycode entry form to display).

otherwise, after entering email/name, the registration data was
immediately emailed.

the very first thing i see on program opening was an ad for the
ultimate upgrade. at that point, on the first run, i could do
without that ad. cheesy is the word that came to mind.

window is resizable, but only the player resizes.
you cannot resize the split between the player & the file list.

input file bit rate is not displayed.
instead you have to right-click "file information".

i don't see a way to disable audio?
in particular why would i want audio if the source has none?

there is no preview as the conversion happens.
would be nice if there were & that it were toggleable.

conversion was speedy (from MOV to FLV, 40 s clip).

if overwrite is not selected, an overwrite condition increments
the file name.

if you pause one conversion, the next in series starts automatically.
kind of odd. & wrong.
if i pause the output, why does it assume that i want to start the
next? if i had a directory of 100 files, each would be queued & if i
wanted to pause (globally - you can't) as i pause one file, the next
starts, so i pause that one, & then the next starts, so i ....
IOW, you should be able to PAUSE & NOT have the next clip start its
conversion. (like say i was running out of disk space & wanted to
clean out some space before letting the conversions resume!)

would be nice if there were some way select only SOME of the files in
the file list for conversion. i add a directory of 100 files, but
only want to hunt & peck for the few that i actually want to convert.
seems i cannot do that as is.

"find target" opens the output directory. strange terminology there.

would be nice if there were a log.
what was converted, source information, & what it was converted to &
that files information.

these are all nits, things that IMO should be there, or how things
should work, by default.

seems to have an extensive set of codecs, seems like it should handle
most anything thrown at it. seem like it will give expected quality
output.

that is the back end stuff, & that seems to be there.

but the UI/UX could stand improvement.
IOW, the program could be better, should be better.

i may sound like i'm complaining, but i'm not. we've seen hundreds
of these programs. what makes this one stand out? & that is the
problem that i have. why not make it the best, make it the "one" I
want. as it is, it is just another one, in my book.

(now, just what is the point of converting from one format to another?
guess if you want to upload to somewhere that only accepts FLV, or
you're going to play on a device that only accepts particular formats?)

I've downloaded some of the other video conversion apps offered by GOATD, and I think this one is the best by far. I can't imagine it being easier to use. You simply choose a template that matches the target use or device. You can still adjust bitrate or resolution from that point if you desire.

Output looks great. Successfully converted the clunky mov video from a Canon 5D, and the result looks great!

Thanks!

I actually installed this video converter a couple of months ago and have also installed various other giveaway video converters, such as WinX and Urex.

In comparison to Winx HD video converter and UrEx Video converter, this one has more bells and whistles, but its also the least effective when it comes to converting MPEG2 (PAL).

It cannot convert an MPEG2-PS file (captured from a DVB stream - PAL) without messing up the aspect ratio. Whether you try convert the MPEG2 file to MP4(H264) or any other format, even if you try to reduce the bit rate and keep it as an MPEG2 (PAL) file, it will always produce a conversion and change the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 5:4 - which I must say looks really odd. Even when you click on edit->video edit and have the checkbox ticked where it says "keep aspect ratio" and also chose 16:9 in the "Zoom" dropdown box, it still fails to retain the 16:9 aspect ratio and always produces an output with a 5:4 aspect ratio. This video converter may work more effectively when converting other files - eg. converting a dv from a camera which you want to play back on your mobile phone, etc. However, its useless for converting digital TV captures (PAL).

The one that does work best for digital TV streams (PAL) is Urex Video converter, which is the slowest of the lot, its also most basic of the lot, but at least it works effectively.

Downloaded only to try the merge & clip features. Since I never use IE, was surprised to see IE launched automatically. What the heck? Cannot use the default browser, or what?

Output:
Excepted for FLV (why???), you can apply the video source settings to the output (I haven't tried all formats, however). Notably for the bitrate. A good point here. In fact, all other video software cannot output same bitrate as input, they oblige to set it up manually, which I've always found to be badly counter-productive in video conversion. "Try, shot and miss" rules o(.

Saving is slow. After cutting 50 mn (only 1 part, see below why) from a 1h50 movie (572 MB), 20 minutes later I'm only at 30% of the job ---cancelled.

Clip:
Working with the clip feature is a pain. Very poor usability, taking into account the fashion in this kind of "modern" software: windows are not resizable. Gosh, what developpers are thinking? Do they use the software they make?

Merge:
Did with 5 .wmv files, each 100 MB, output to .wmv, with same source settings (audio & video). Job OK within a reasonable duration time.

Edit:
Played a little bit. Not bad at all: Preview, deinterlacing, watermark. All easy. Don't know what the amplifier's for.

Worth 100 MB on disk? Not sure, but I'll certainly find occasional uses.

Not worth 100 MB on disk? Not sure, but I'll certainly regret useful features.

Download and installation went smoothly on Windows 7 machine. This is a great converter. I've been using Odin & Tipard (previous GAOTD) but find this better as it supports (amongst others) adding of subtitle and rotating of video clips. This is handy as sometimes videoclip taken using mobile phones needs to be rotated. Quality of 3gp video converted to mkv was excellent too.
A BIG THANK YOU to GAOTD and Wondershare for this wonderful share.

Noticed a typo on the advanced video settings - Bit Rate:
