I downloaded from giveawayof the day a few months ago. It worked fine until a couple weeks ago when I used it to get rid of dupicate files. It showed over 18k of dup. files. Not knowing what I was doing, I stupidly deleted them all. Now my computer has stopped working. It brings up a blue screen for a second. Cycles through start normally or safe mode etc. I tried even to restore the computer but it stopped and started the cycle again.

I've even sent it to what my husband calls the laptop guru at work and he has been unable to save it. I've stupidly neglected to save my pictures from the last several months and will now lose them.

I've never had a mechanical problem with a download from giveawayoftheday before. But it would have to be a big one when it happened.

Works well, but better used in conjunction with other 'clean-up' wares that are available free.

I agree with Arturo, $50 is a lot of money. Although so far it seems to do its job better than others I've tried. Too bad there isn't some kind of discount to purchase it or an option to donate money for those who downloaded the software for free (who might wish to give it to others or install it on another machine).

My Comment got deleted for some reason, but I installed this software and I don't know what it did, but I can no longer run some of my programs and every time I boot up, I get a Windows Installer window that pops up and tries to install 'Photo Gallery'. After failing to install it, it then asks for the original disk or brows to location of files.
This pops up 3 times, Then it come sup FOUR MORE Times and tries to install 'Fax'. I even had a System Restore point set before installing and the programs that wouldn't run before, still do not.
I've used CCleaner and NEVER had a problem. Will just stick with that and DO NOT Recommend this one!

#156: "it accepts the registation O.K.& even after a restart I still get the trial program."

I had exactly the same experience as #156. I've installed a number of GOTD programa before, and I did follow the instructions. WindowsXP Home SP2, updated.

Downloaded this sotware and ran the disk cleaner and the registry cleaner. I try and keep my system clean as possible with CCleaner, ad-adware, spybot; avast, avg, etc. I was surprised when the regestry cleaner got over 200 hits.
The only issue so far has been with the duplicate files finder. Seems like it is finding duplicates that don't exist. I tested with one file it found and let it remove it. I then searched my system and the the file was gone (only in the recycle bin) even though it said I has 2 before. I am still trying figure out what is causing that. It located over 500 duplicates but they don't show up when I do a search for them (only 1 shows up) ......

Seems like this does please many though.

WOW! I had tried CCleaner, RegCleaner and a couple of other utilities but have been happily using Glary Utilities on a regular basis for more than a year, even though I new it wasn't catching absolutely everything. I ran a registry check with Glary and it found only 12 errors; WinUtilities found 1795!!! And I did look at all 1795 entries. WU found invalid class IDs and entries for software that had been removed so long ago that I had forgotten that it was ever on my computer. THANKS GAOTD!

BTW, these giveaways install best/easiest using IE.

This is a good program, however not nearly as good or as complete as TuneUp Utilities. However Tuneup Utilities is not free so one can't complain. But if you were going to spend money on a utility suite TuneUp Utilities would be a much better option.

Be extrmemly careful with the registry cleaner in WinUtilities - like 99% of registry cleaners it identifies some legitimate and needed registry entries as being bad. If you go ahead and delete all found registry problems then quite possibly it will cause problems with Windows or some of the programs you use. So be careful - either manually verify every error found - or a much better option is to not use the registry cleaner.

It's working noting that 99% of registry "problems" are completely harmless - and leaving them in place will not harm your computer at all - even if hundres of supposed errors are found.

TuneUp Utilities 2009 (soon to be released) is much better - but of course not free. Also the registry cleaner included with TuneUp Utllities is one of the very few which are safe to use. (It is exceptionally rare for it to give a false posative). (However as I said previosuly cleaning the registry is usually a waste of time).

I download very few utilities from GOTD (or anywhere else). Most are either not needed, don't work well or have good or better free alternatives. I'm happy to say this isn't one of them. This simply has too many tools to discuss. But it did find over 300 registry errors and almost 200 invalid shortcuts that I wasn't even aware of. Be sure and set the option to run a system restore point...just in case when messing with utilities like this. But this does WAY more than CCleaner or another favorite cleaning utility.

The only small complaint I have is that you cannot resize or maximize the window to view the full file paths easily. Some items allow you to export that list to HTML, but how about just letting you maximize the window?

#127, PF, you can export the registry search results.

As I've said many times before, anytime GOTD offers anything which claims to clean, fix, or optimize Windows, most users heap praise on it whether it deserves it or not.

Let's see, this is version 6.2, and they haven't figured out how to allow windows to be resized, maximized, or have scroll bars, and you're trusting them to muck with files and registry entries? These days, I would expect a middle school student programmer to know how to support resizable windows. Their progress indicators aren't useful and slow down operations.

Do not use the Jump to Registry feature of their Registry Search. Regedit is dangerous because it's always "live", any changes you make are made to the registry right then, and there's no undo. When I tried their Jump to Registry feature, it jumped all over the registry, and wound up at the wrong location. It was so much fun reading through the 5,000 changes which occurred over the course of the day to make sure that WinUtilities hadn't screwed anything up. It's not like this feature is hard to implement. There's a registry entry which you can set (surprise, surprise), and Regedit will open to that key.

I have no problem scrolling left and right or up and down after running reg cleaner to view entire file name and location. You can double click to auto-size each column (near top between "location and "problem")or manually drag the column wider or narrower.

I have tested this on XP2 and as 119 says this is DANGEROUS - didn't get the blue screen of death but neither of my Browsers would work as one of the Registry items it deleted was "blank.htm" !!!!!!!

Fortunately I had done a registry backup prior to the delete and everything easily brought back to normal.

I am deleting this software - like now!

Yes, some of the windows have truncated information. Right-click and choose Edit to see all of it. Or save to HTML and read in your browser.

Microsoft is the king of truncated information but they don't provide alternate ways to read it!

For those trying out programs such as these, it's really worth the time spent to read the instructions carefully. Some of the folks who have commented above apparently didn't have time to read.

Good rules for doing massive changes:
1. If you're going to get rid of junk files, make sure you've backed up your system.

2. If you're going to make changes to your registry without reviewing the proposed changes, make sure you have created a system restore point. Better yet, make sure you have an emergency recovery CD.

...

One other comment: This software is an opportunity to try out a wide variety of software. Don't complain about the price. You aren't paying for it -yet-. If you rely on the program and then have to actually buy it for your next computer, don't complain. I really appreciate the thoughtful comments listed every day. Especially comparing the current offering to others that they have tried.

GOTD is a great way to start my day.

to #106 PLEASE DON'T TYPE IN ALL CAPS, it's annoying. The word 'question' is not spelled with a 'C'. Also it is not bad to have more than one clean up and optimization program. Clean Up Utilities is not a bad program, but this one has some different features, and i suggest you also download it.

Hi everybody!!

Until now to optimize and speedup my system I always used the following FREEWARE SW in sequence:

1) REGSEEKER
2) CLEAN MY REGISTRY
3) REG SCRUB XP
4) CC CLEANER
5) Advanced Windows Care
6) Glary Utilities
7) FREE WINDOW REGISTRY REPAIR

And for swift cleaning at the end of every INTERNET SESSION:

DISK CLEANER
INDEX.DAT ANALYZER

Finally to optimize the REGISTRY of my old HOME PC I often used in the past the following little but also powerful program:

NTREGOPT

Well it seems to me that this GAOTD is very good indeed but it's quite similar to GLARY UTILITIES FREE VERSION as for as its main features are concerned, aren't they?

So the question is:

Can WinUtilities replace all the SW set out above or instead it's just as good as GLARY UTILITES??

Could somebody be kind enough to answer my (maybe foolish) question?

Thanks for your consideration.

Cheers from ITALY!!

WinUtilities registry search function produces a nice, scrollable list of results, unlike RegEdit. It also permits the search to be restricted to various entry types and to specific registry components.

It's a pity, though, that the registry search results window (in XP, at least) is of limited size and cannot be widened to see the registry entries in toto. Neither can it be scrolled horizontally, unlike some of the utility's other search results windows.

#106 This is about the same as Tune Up but has a couple of extra features. You can have both on your PC. It won't screw anything up. Recommend downloading and trying it out. If you don't like it, you can always use your TuneUp Utilities to uninstall it.

Very nice. I would say this is best next to Vista Optimizer and Tune Up Utilities. Glary Utilities is a good freeware alternative. Get this while its free. This is a great little application that can speed up your system and help you keep it that way. You don't have to be a techy to use it and it has a great interface. Works great in Vista. I highly recommend this if you don't have one of these type of apps already.

I use a variety of programs such as this. This is a nice program. I checked any action it wanted to execute before it did and everything seemed reasonable. This is very similar to the freeware Glary Utilities. I like having both. I also use System Mechanic and Registry Mechanic.

I tried it successfully on XP Pro SP2, XP Home SP2, Vista SP1 32-bit, and Vista SP1 64-bit.

Thanks GOTD!

Just a quick note to those having troubles registering todays give away: You have to extract the readme file to the desktop. Then you have to copy & paste in both the name: Giveawayoftheday and the entire registration code, including YLSOFT. & all the didgets including all remaining periods. Restart the program, then click: help/about. The program also updates
Another nice thing about todays give away is the code provided will activate a download directly from the publishers homepage! Theres nothing wrong with the reg code provided in the download from GOTD, your doing it wrong is all! I'd save this activation code because it might be one you can reinstall.

DANGEROUS! Follow up to my last post: Right after using the Registry cleaner my Vista 32 system got a BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH for the very first time. Rebooting just sent system into a reboot cycle. Had to use System restore to get back. I thought the registry cleaner found an unusually high # of problems. Other registry cleaners find maybe a dozen issues. This Prog found hundreds. Way too aggressive in its suggestions!
