Alexa Bennett, thank you for your answer.

Now, just another question : I already had a lifetime/50GB/month free plan. I just claimed the actual voucher for the 60GB/month free plan/1 year license. For the next year I will have 60GB/month, but after that will I keep the lifetime/50GB/month licence ? Thank you for your answer.

CAUTION: When you run out of Free bandwidth, Windscibe not only terminated its VPN connection, but unfortunately, it ALSO automatically deactivated the protective firewall designed to block Internet access when a VPN connection is lost.

By automatically deactivating the firewall when the limit was reached, caused my real IP address to be exposed without my knowledge and seems counter intuitive to the real purpose of the firewall in the first place.

Note to vendor: If you are truly concerned about protecting everyone privacy, my suggestion to improve your software is to keep the firewall active when a limit is reached. Marketing ploy or not, this seem like a dirty trick to play on potential customers, by allowing IP addresses to be deliberately exposed in the hopes of selling an upgrade. Personally, I feel a little betrayed that your marketing strategy thought this was a good idea.

Here are a few things I've been able to find out, both by reading carefully through Windscribe's information as well as observing what is happening with my computer as it deals with the difference between the desktop app and the browser extension. If this isn't accurate, please let me know...

- The browser extension (Chrome, in my case) only deals with the data that is flowing to and from the browser, and is only active when the browser is up and running. If you have your machine set to "Keep Chrome running in the background" then the extension will continue to run and use resources as well.

- However, there is more data from the internet coming and going to/from your computer even if you don't have a browser running. This is especially true with Windows 10 where a LOT of apps run in the background and get data from online (consider things like the live tiles that show stuff like news headlines, weather conditions, recent facebook posts, etc.), as well as your email program, messenger program, etc. Apparently, this is where the desktop app comes in as it provides a VPN for this data as well and not only for the browser like the extension.

Lastly, there appear to be more than a few folks who are equating the 60GB that is provided with "bandwidth". Sorry, but they are different things. My best example is filling a swimming pool with a hose - 60GB is the total amount of water that will end up in the pool, but bandwidth is the size of the hose you are using to fill it with. Narrow bandwidth would be like using a garden hose, where wide bandwidth (broadband) would be like using a fire hose - where the pressure might be the same for both but the amount of water that comes through each second will be greater for the larger hose.

So far I'm going to keep Windscribe and only use it when I need it - until something better comes along for the same price!

I´ve come to understand by the number of strange and many times irrelevant questions posed here, that many GAOTD clients are newbies and/or not very knowledgeable when it comes to general internet information.

I´ve been using various VPN´s for the past 10 years and most providers offers both free and paid accounts. The free accounts usually gives you a limited number of countries and some times also slower (capped) speed.
But there are a lot of things you can do instead of just moaning and blowing of steam for not understanding.
Regarding the general speed, beyond what you´re ISP is offering, try these two (free) programs to see if you´re machine setting are optimal:
TCP Optimixer. exe (https://www.speedguide.net/tcpoptimizer.php) and DNSBench.exe (https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm).
Now PLEASE just READ THE INSTRUCTIONS and execute the programs, OK!!! They have been around for years and might give you a measurable increase in speed. So instead of wasting time by worrying -
Try To Learn Something New Every Day!
Also there is a Windscribe lifetime subscription offer for $49,00 The Stackskills group of comanpies (Skillwize.com, Stacksocial.com, Bitdujour.com et al).
Pertaining To All Items Mentioned By Me In This Mail, You Have NOTHING To Worry About - All Information Provided Is Correct -OK?!
For the very best online security, I use FraudFox, But that program is not intended for the faint hearted... Love from J

jacob,
I picked up the Windscribe lifetime. I was dubious as it is 50$, but then it is only 50$. Darn thing worked. I spent considerable time 'researching' Windscribe and 3rd party sellers. As StackSocial has many complaints I went thru SharewareOnSale (SoS)(there are many others) at https://sharewareonsale.com/s/windscribe-vpn-lifetime-subscription-91-discount
And no, I am not a shill or involved with Windscribe or SoS, just a user that needed to get on with a VPN. At 50$, changing to another VPN later when I know more about VPNs won't hurt.

Make Windscribe blocking ads even not turn on VPN on Chrome extension or even better give a feature like Disconnect Ads Block and VPN mode.

After read comment # 6, I think Winscribe should have know they have problems with Microsoft account, so if one use Hotmail or any Microsoft email like outlook. they can not email to you. They should warn new users this to save every one troubles.
I changed my email to other account and immediately received the verification link,
It's not a good practice for accompany to cover this fact.

Plin, You also get Microsoft account alla Hotmail, Outlook, the confirmation link within a short time! However, it is classified as spam by Microsoft and is thus in the folder "Junk E-Mail"!

What others describe is that Microsoft and Facebook block access to the account when trying to log into the accounts while using windscribe. The user is then prompted to change his passwords.

PS: I have register my windscribe-account with a hotmail-e-mail-adress!

Rico2912,
I just checked spam folder/junk email, never shown up there. I was lucky at last minutes reset my email account to others to get through. Regarding the other issue of Microsoft blocking accessing while run Windscribe. I didn't encounter. I guess I opened Microsoft account first. then run windscribe (disable the startup option). I think other countries may not block access to Microsoft accounts. hope this help every one with the same issues.

I had no trouble installing this on my Win 10 laptop. The registration process went smoothly. Unfortunately it was all down hill from there. On speedtest.net my download speed dropped from 30 MB to 17 MB. My upload speed dropped from 32 MB to 3 MB. I was limited to which countries I could choose. I did not like the results. Uninstalled via reboot. I will stick with the free Hoxx extension

I have opt into using Windscribe because not only because of it's ease of use but it is our right to protect ourselves when using the internet from business and people wanting to get at our identity and monitor us just like the notorious Stasi, The Stasi had enormous influence on almost every aspect of daily life in the GDR. I do not want Facebook or Google to do the same as I feel that EVERYTHING we do is monitored,. Could they be worse?

Windscribe downloaded and installed without problem. Upgraded to 60GB/month plan using the given Voucher Code in the README.TXT file. Started Windscribe and picked a Los Angleles server for my VPN IP. All was looking very good until my POP3 Outlook tried to get mail from my GMail account. OL kept asking for my password to all my accounts. No matter what I put for a password, a correct one or not, OL could not retreive my email. I had to quite Windscribe. WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF THIS?

However- does anyone have an information- how long Windscribe keeps the logs?

Also- what type of VPN they use?

KK, nobody can use your e-mail for this service! This person needs your e-mail password to confirm the registration for this service! Except you are carelessly with your loggin data bypassed and someone knows your mail password, because you either have not protected it properly or you have give it away to somebody without thinking about the consequences!

I installed Windscribe. No problem; smooth.
I installed the FireFox extension. No problem

There is the toolbar icon that when clicked shows "60gb left"
I would generally leave this off unless torrenting.
However ...
I would like the browser Windscribe app to operate (be on) all the time.
Does the toolbar icon info box need to be checked 'on' for the FireFox extension to work?

Reply   |   Comment by maddog7  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

maddog7,

Ok, I'm talking to myself. I did find an answer to my question here:
https://windscribe.com/faq#connection_modes

However, I am still wondering about using the browser app by itself?

--- from Windscribe FAQ ---

What does the desktop application do?

The desktop application is a Virtual Private Network (VPN) client. It creates an encrypted tunnel from your computer to our servers, and all your activity is sent through the tunnel. This has 2 advantages:

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) IP address is masked, so any website you visit or any applications you use (Skype, email providers, BitTorrent peers, etc), will see our IP address, which is shared by thousands of people, so your activity is mixed with other users.
Your Internet Service Provider cannot see what you do online. This is much more important than you think.

What does the browser extension do?

The browser extension provides a "Lite" VPN client, which does the same thing as the desktop one, but only in your browser. Any other applications you may be using on your computer will utilize your ISP provided IP address.
Additionally it blocks thousands of ad beacons and trackers that could follow you across the websites you visit, and compromise your privacy even if you are already using a VPN. It also blocks various "social widgets", such as Facebook Like buttons, Twitter badges, etc, which are embedded into millions of websites and report all your activity to their respective companies. It also rotates your user agent (which identifies your browser), which further scrambles your online activities in the eyes of whoever is watching.
Why should I use both products?

Contrary to popular belief, a VPN client alone will not keep you anonymous or significantly help your privacy online, unless you take extreme measures, at which point using the Internet becomes a burden.
Anonymous IP address alone provides some protection, however marketers, criminals and governments have stepped up their game which allows them to track you even if you already use a VPN. In order to combat this, browser level protection is also necessary to improve your chances of staying anonymous.

OK, I have installed the program and I am mulling some options. It wants to install a Firefox app which I think I don't want. I already have a firewall (Zone Alarm free), my router is secured, and I only want to use the VPN when I want to access "geo-blocked content" and while travelling. Can I use the VPN without the Firefox addon, or can I simply turn the addon off when I don't need it, without affecting other things? Will I be able to turn off the firewall and/or other features selectively?

Here's some results that may be interesting to everyone...

I downloaded and installed Windscribe from GOTD and properly registered it on my home PC. I use an 15-2500 quad core machine with 12GB or RAM and a 480GB SSD. I am connected to my router via Wi-Fi from the next room. I use Google Chrome with both Ghostery and Ad Block Plus extensions to block ads/trackers/beacons/etc.

Using the recommended settings that installed with Windscribe, here are the speeds I got according to multiple passes on Fast.com and Speedtest.net:

With both the desktop app AND the Chrome extension turned ON - 5Mbps
With the desktop app OFF and the Chrome extension turned ON - 40Mbps
With both the desktop app AND the Chrome extension turned OFF - 89Mbps (also my normal speed prior to Windscribe installation)

Apparently per the default settings, when I turn the desktop app ON the Chrome extension automatically turns on also. But I can turn off the desktop app and have only the Chrome extension running if I want. I'm not certain what benefit there is by having both running at the same time. Obviously, if I use my Tor browser I will need the desktop app but if all the desktop app does is block ads then I shouldn't need it if I am also using Ghostery/ABP in Chrome.

Hope this helps!

One finding I forgot to mention - using Windscribe (same factory default settings) with a Tor browser brings everything down to a glacial pace, like using a 14.4 modem on dial-up back in 1990 kind of pace. CNN.com took 22 minutes to fully load. I guess that's the price you pay for privacy.

Hopefully someday we will get better at this.

Reply   |   Comment by Jon651  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+10)

Jon651, Jon651, If you don´t want to use the Chrome extension, just go to extensions and untick the box... The use of using both the desktop and the extension is obviously that you can use two locations, f x your desktop app/Germany extension/France. This will create further obfuscation. But, truth to be told The FBI, NSA et al is able to track and trace you even if you use TOR. It was actually a few years ago that fact was public knowledge. They even cracked the "uncrackable" Iphone years ago, in spite of Apple refusing to give them the source code... Also you might wanna see my comment #49(?) - being moderated.

Browse the web privately as it was meant to be. Your online privacy is under attack.
Windscribe sets you free and that's true! Still, the sign up procedure is very confusing and long winded. I can't repeat it here because it's complications but basically the instructions in the Read Me are wrong. Just fidget like me for 15 min. and you'll get there. This is a VPN that is 24/7/365 working in the background without slowing down your browsing experience. For sure you can book a flight at a bargain price without being rejected and when you come back 2 min. later the same flight was hiked 30% because of your cookies gave away to the website manager that you're keen on that flight ticket, bastards. Is gonna be a much more peaceful surfing !

Purrete, You should read my comment, #49. Besides, a VPN does not give you all that protection compared to 5 years ago. I won´t get all technical and explain everything here, but there are a number of other items that you have to keep in mind too. The SEO (Search Engine Optimization) engineers have cracked that code. That´s why there´s a fire sale on VPN´s. Like you can buy a Windscribe Pro lifetime subscription for $49,00 today... The general population have not understood that, thus throwing good money at bad apps...

1 YEAR? LIFETIME? SOMETHING ELSE?
(sorry about the caps but I want to make sure it is seen since so many others have asked and no one has answered)

This is basic information and should always be included in the giveaway description.
Thank you!

raku, The idea informer page has this mentioned(ignoring the old version of v1.59):

The featured program offers 60GB/month free plan!
If you are a Mac user please download the installation file here (19.1 MB).
Video introduction.
NB: The developer provides a 1-year license.
To redeem the key the user has to sign up on the website: https://windscribe.com/signup and click "Have a Voucher?" link below the signup form, and input the voucher code. The account will be instantly upgraded to 60GB/month free plan.

I believe it is a free one-year license with a bandwidth limit of 60GBs per month.

Rebeldawg, while I appreciate you trying to help, that does not answer the question of the length of service of this giveaway. The terms of a previous giveaway are not significant to any other giveaway but that one. Thanks.

I am hoping Windscribe or GOTD can clear this up.

raku, about one year ago I subscribed to Windscribe v1.61 50GB plan on BitsDuJour. I used maybe only a few GB, but still I've got 50GB to use. So I guess it is a lifetime service, but I have no idea what would happen after you used given amount of GB/month. Perhaps you have to wait until the next month starts to use Windscribe service again??

I'm an existing customer, using Windscribe for over a year now. I installed the newest version from your offer, but clicking on the "claim voucher" does nothing: no voucher, no code, my Windscribe's monthly allowance of 50Gb did not change, so it seems I've just spent 30 minutes practicing how to download and install an app for no reason, as I'm left exactly where I started, with my same 50Gb Windscribe.

Ron Cavin, (update) I just found the voucher code -- in a reply by OleBo to a very early question (in comment number one). Now my question is why could I find the code ONLY in a comment by another user? Why was it not provided, as I had expected, by GAOTD or the publisher? Crazy.

Reply   |   Comment by Ron Cavin  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

There wasn't a need for that. All you have to do, apparently, is to sign into your account on windscribe.com and enter the promo code as https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/windscribe-1-59-win-mac/#comment-557699 OleBo said in his comment. Hope it works.

Ron Cavin, It could also be found in the ReadMe.txt file that came with the setup file. The voucher code is listed after the install/signup information.

Rebeldawg, Oops, my bad! I was following the instruction in the original email offer, and read only the first part of the text that came with the setup file, saw it was the same (for the first paragraphs) and put it aside.

A lot of unusual comments here being upvoted as useful. How is "I read on another site that someone I don't know anything about said that his grandmother had problems with this software so I'm not trying it!" useful?

I've been running the 60GB/mo free version for a few months now, and here are some real world comments.

The software installs and then loads as a small control window. From there, you select the location where you want to connect through, which is where your IP will appear to come from. The free versions are limited to about half a dozen or so sites, most of them North American. The paid version has many more sites available globally. Keep in mind that in general, the further away the site, the slower you access speeds will be. Without Windscribe, I have 120/12 speeds. Connecting to a site in my state reduces that by about 20%. Connecting through a site in Paris reduces it by half. This behavior is not unique to Windscribe.

The control panel is simple and easy to use. You can turn the VPN on and off at will from there. I don't use it full time, only for certain tasks, and I select a location close to me. I don't care if others think I'm in a city 300 miles away or in Paris, I just don't want them to have my real IP. Oh, and forget about hiding from the Feds with this or any other VPN. If they want to find you, they will find you. It's foolish to think otherwise.

The control panel has a clear display of how much data has gone through the VPN by showing you how much you have left for the month (that's on this plan; the paid version has no limitations).

Some annoying things...

Sometimes, it continually uses about 15% CPU resources, and continues to do so even after you bypass it until you use Windows Task manager to kill it. No idea why, and it's not always. I have it on now, for instance, and it's taking almost no CPU resources at all.

As another reviewer mentions here, when active it takes over the right-click menu options 'Save link as' and 'Copy link address' so you go to the secure Windscribe address. This is necessary to maintain your anonymity, but is somewhat annoying anyway.

Logging into a Microsoft account through it sometimes freaks Microsoft out, who then get their panties in a twist and send you alerts about how someone logged into your account from a different IP, and was it you? But you get the same nonsense when you log in from ANY access point/IP that's not your 'normal' one, Windscribe or not. Just be aware it happens.

Overall, I'm quite pleased with the program, especially as I get 60GB/mo access for free. The developers could do better responding to email questions in a more timely manner, but then it's always that way with freebies. I assume that perhaps paid subscribers get faster access. And they are in Canada, and have a sense of humor, which helps.

OK, you type a URL into the address bar of your browser, & through the magic of technology that web site appears in the browser window. That web site knows your IP address -- it Has to know where to send the data you requested. However that IP address can also be used to determine your physical location. The way around that is to use a proxy -- you tell a server the URL you want, & it retrieves that site or data & relays it to you, so the only IP address the site sees belongs to the proxy server.

You can expand on that idea if you use the TOR browser, where the URL you requested is routed through several anonymous proxy servers. Using proxy services like that only protects your IP address though, not the network traffic, so someone(s) like your ISP can sift through every bit of data reaching your connection. To secure that stream of data you can use a VPN, which encrypts the data between you and the proxy server.

Windscribe is featured in these 2 articles:

windowscentral[.]com/best-free-vpn

techradar[.]com/news/the-best-free-vpn

But, they don't make the lists in these two rankings where the emphasis is not on "free":

cnet[.]com/best-vpn-services-directory/

pcmag[.]com/article2/0,2817,2403388,00.asp

Now, after giving you those 4 links to VPN rating charts, here's another link to an article on Ars Technica, telling you why you should take any VPN ratings with a [rather large] grain of salt.

arstechnica[.]com/information-technology/2016/06/aiming-for-anonymity-ars-assesses-the-state-of-vpns-in-2016/

I got the account, now how do I use it? I guess I will have to figure that out. I live in the Philippines, so I get a lot of "content not for your geographical area", which annoys me to no end, I hope this will help. I have fiber optic internet, at 50mb, hope this won't slow it down too much. I am not that worried about torrents, but if this will help protect me, then great, I always like protection.

OK, I am interested - but I have some basic questions...

1. Can this be turned off when I don't want to use it or does it remain active all the time?
2. Can the same account be installed on several computers, or do I need a different account for each machine? I have a desktop, laptop and tablet all running Windows 10.
3. What about our phones and other devices that use either Android or iOS?
4. Although I don't expect to exceed 60GB, what happens if I do? Does it shut off or charge me a fee to continue past 60GB? If it shuts off, will it send me a notice?
5. I enjoy pretty fast speeds at home. Will this noticeably slow down my connection?

Thanks for any information.

Reply   |   Comment by Jon651  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+11)

1. Yes, it can be turned on and off as you desire.
2. Premium allows unlimited devices. Free limits the number to a single device. I believe the giveaway today is for Free with higher bandwidth limit (60GB instead of 10GB)
3. iOS has its own dedicated app, I don't think Android does yet, but it is possible to configure your phone to use this VPN, but apparently you need Premium for that.
4. Most likely will just notify you and disconnect without charging you anything.
5. This VPN is pretty fast, although any VPN will generally slow down your connection, I'd say give it a try and see for yourself.

Reply   |   Comment by Dan  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+13)

Jon651, Windscribe had a promotion on GOTD a month or 2 ago and I downloaded it then. Some sites like gmail or Facebook you need to whitelist or the sites will keep giving you security notices that they don't recognize your computer, but that is an issue with the websites not Windscribe. I haven't noticed any slowdown in browsing or download speeds. Using Windscribe actually seems to help the webpages load faster because it removes ads and blocks trackers. I do seem to still get some ads, but this works better over-all than the ad blockers I was previously using.

Be careful with software like this. I will not install it for few reason:
a) They want your real e-mail address, but pretend to protect your privacy.
b) 50GB I use in few days watching movies, video and audio.
c) It is very slow when streaming video and it stops after few minutes do to bottle neck at the designated privacy server.
d) If they can measure your usage, they can create a complete profile of yourself and they can sell it to third parties.
e) A software running in the background 24/7 even when not on Internet is what worries me the most.

Reply   |   Comment by SWP  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

SWP,
a) remedy: disposal temporary email address, alias or new email adress created for this ofer.
b) that why they sell premium services without limits
c) choose best location (nearest)
d) oh.. yeah sure ;) your ISP is more suspected then WindScribe. Try then tor, of free cafee hot spot but don't forget hat and fake mustache ;)
e) background is only net driver to intercept network traffic for vpn purpose. U can use a Virtual Machine for VPN

Many peopl use vpn's to avoid tracking by ISP. It's possible the WindScribe can log your behavior but who dosen't ? Even paid vpns are not 100% proof.
For "black operations" are more sophisticated methods.

I had been use this for shopping and email. It prevents local ads from showing up, and helps with the anonymous email account (you know, "sign up and get this benefit or bargain or prize" and then you have tons of spam). I have been thankful for the 10GB account. The extra 50GB will be more than I ever use in a month! Thank you, Windscribe!

@Singh & others with some problems & questions:

I have been using Windscribe Giveaways from here & other sites for over a year and have friends I have recommended them to, who are using them with NO problem.

I have an existing installation of Windscribe from an older installation. What I did this time, I did NOT install anything. Instead, downloaded the file from GOTD, unzipped it & noted down the Voucher Code in readme file.

I then went to windscribe.com where I signed up under a different name. On that form, insert the provided voucher code.

Normally, you get I think 2GB free from Windscribe if you DONT provide your email. If you do, and validate it, you get 10GB/mon FREE, which I think is more generous than any other "free" offers elsewhere I'm aware of.

So continuing with the Giveaway, you will be asked to validate your email, which if you do, will be confirmed to have 60GB/mon.

I do assume it's for a year. Other Giveaways from them from this & other sites have been for a year.

If you cannot use the installation from GOTD, you can download one directly from windscribe.com [correct me if I'm wrong!!] ... and after installation, log in with the username + password from the sign up.
It normally saves the login.

As said, very satisfied with Windscribe & use it to watch US series & other programs from other countries otherwise blocked, though as the features show, it has other benefits.

I personally have it set NOT to start with Windows, because I do not want to use the VPN features all the time. Otherwise easy to use. Just choose the country, from those available you want to be "in" ...

Every month the usage is re-set to ... in this case 60GB, the month beginning with the day you sign up.

nibo1978,

Tor was cracked a couple years ago. Every one of these many VPNs on the market has serious drawbacks or deficiencies, if I'm to believe numerous reviews or reader comments. (I'm going to read through that Ars Technica and related articles.) It could be that **none** of them is really providing the security that users want to believe they are getting.

So, what -- if anything -- **really does* deliver the goods and the performance, without being so advanced hacker-ish that few will understand how to properly use it ??!

2) Once the account is established, is it necessary to install software if ONLY using for torrents? Is the SOCKS5 authentication (user/password) sufficient to anonymize the Torrent traffic?

From some of the other reviews read,
I am worried about installing this. I do not want to have to spend time ferreting out potential problems of the nature I have read so far by other reviewers. Also one review I read on another site referred to an aspect of the program that could not be turned off until the program was uninstalled which consistently showed an address in china. I like the idea of protection, but in many reviews, there seems to be many bugs that I do not desire to debug, especially when it comes to the operation and performance of my pc. I have an older pc I might try as an experiment, but not on my new ones. Also the promo video does not really focus on the benefits of this program, and how it will NOT harm your pc since it probably has the POTENTIAL to do some things you do not really desire.
