I have seen better programs than the one offered today @GOTD. However, after reading the comments of those that tested it, I downloaded it too, and experimented. They (commentators) are correct with regards to developer's "...but it features fewer options. " This software is good for just "getting started".
I use Composer, which you can get from SeaMonkey (http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/ ), the "real" Netscape (remember that one?) Well, Mozilla owns the engine (yes, maker of Firefox) and the skin was given away by Anderson (& AOL only wanted the name?) This is a good program to learn Web design /creation. Give it a try, besides, it a 4-in-one: Browser, E-Mail, Composer, & IRC Chat!

Would this offer anything you couldn't get with Wordpress or Drupal or any other blogging software that comes with any hosting package?

I've used free "komposer" for 11 years to build my website. It's simple to use for a novice and it has the capability to use advanced programing features.

It uses WYSIWYG or you can write in source code. You can also publish your files from within komposer etc. Although I prefere to use FireFTP to publish the articles etc.

Don't build your business website with this tool, since the site will not be responsive in nature (i.e. it won't resize it on Mobile platform). Google search engine ranking has responsiveness as one of the key aspect of a website. So, your business site will never be ranked higher due to this limitation.

So. The description states
"Like the other WebSite X5 programs, it's based on the 5 step method to build sites without coding but it features fewer options"

This is all true. Open the software and start with step 1. Complete the few options that are available then click next to step 2 and so on through step 3,4,5.

The features fewer options statement is also true. Very limited specific options.

I find the program difficult to navigate, yielding very minimal results. A program should have strong direction. The user should easily be able to complete a specific task, and know when they should move on to next.

The program does not offer the best guidelines, so if you are an absolute beginner, I believe this would confuse you.

If you are familiar with other software, keep using that.

Just an opinion.

Where in the world do I go to get what I need to verify my8 email address and get what I need to register this program.

Reply   |   Comment by Evie F  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-3)

Evie F, when you first open the program it will ask for email address. Type your email and click next. You will then receive a confirmation email click the link in the emailThe link will take you to another registration page you do not need to register again just close the page. Go back to the program now and click next you should be ok.

Google Sites is so easy to use it and free, it is well designed like everything else Google provides. I have used www.mpdsupport.org for 12 years, it serves about 4,000 patients, it took me about 20 minutes to create it. Check it out. https://sites.google.com

Reply   |   Comment by Robert Tollen  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+6)

Robert Tollen, LOL the GOTD www.mpdsupport link above goes to a 404 error, and keying it in direct goes to a site down page. Not exactly a great endorsement of your recommendations :)

Reply   |   Comment by MHarran  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

MHarran, Perhaps you kick started it or something. Link is crap but direct entry of site works for me.

Reply   |   Comment by Rick  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

MHarran, www.mpdsupport.org REDIRECTS in 1 second to https://sites.google.com/site/mpdsupport/, no problem. Check your DNS server, switch to a faster Google DNS!

Reply   |   Comment by Robert Tollen  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

MHarran, I think this is an issue that Giveaway of the Day is causing because if you copy the link address and put it in it goes to the site. Same thing happens on the Google Site link but if you copy it and paste it into the browser it works. Don't think the issue is his site I think it is something with GAOTD website.

Robert Tollen, You're talking about the Googlenet. What about the real man's net, The Internet? By the way, "Free" on the Internet only means no money is exchanged. Google charges, if you read the Privacy and ToU that the cost is your visitors privacy - which most people would put a price tag on, except Google and other sites using stalkers.
Any WYSIWYG like WebSite X5 Start 13 is a tool to help one build a site. The better ones don't force you, like Google, Wix, Godaddy and such, to embed trackers, stalkers, and all the other tools to make our "...visit to the web site more friendly."
The best way to protect your visitors is to keep the WYSIWYG used, and the Host apart.

TK, If you read it, you'd know what I was writing about. It was in response to the Comment by Robert Tollen regarding Googlenet freebies. Did you bread this?

Website X5 Start 13 is very much a WYSIWYG. Like you said, it's a "what you see is what you get". If you want to put Website X5 Start 13 in to a category all it's own because because you say one can't see what they get, have at it.

Kiddi-koders have been changing the rules, the names, and acronyms of everything Internet because it makes them look like they are smart, but it doesn't show up in their work. No offense.

WebSite X5 Start 13 is a good program for any start-up wanna-be "web designer", "web master", or what ever the term is this week, and for any pro that is making a generic static site. Let's face it - web design is more a job of putting the right add-ons and plug-ins in to the same generic web templates styles a gazillion of others are using. I think WebSite X5 Start 13 is a tool to help pound in the text, the images, and move things so that in the end, WYSIWYG! EOD

Actually, this software IS for newbies, everything is pre-arranged, they have their own templates and it's impossible to customize or manipulate the way you want or like unless you complete the site and go deep into the bracketing and start coding to reflect the desired look. This is a play-making website builder that would NOT interest even a novice avid to create something worthy to hang out there.

Waiting, waiting, waiting for a long time... for registration!
Finaly I got it finding a surprise: it appeared you must pay for almost everything: templates and others!
Building a web using this soft is unconfortable because you can't see what you do..!
Uninstalled this messed soft and ready to look for a kind of WYSIWIG in which I could build a webside seeing constately what I do!

There are so many free alternatives ---even for commercial web sites--- it's a wonder anyone would even download this GOTD.

Anyway, this is not for n00bs, because you'll need additional software to upload to the server (and more software to run a local server); some knowledge to edit the code (html, css, javascript) although developers of this kind of software always say you don't need coding ---which is a false statement because the automatically produced code always s***s.

watson street,

I agree, I got the validation email, clicked on it which takes you to a registration page. I fill that in then get the message "your email address is not validated" (or something similar) so then just go round in aa loop!! Crazy!

got the same problem here.

What are the free alternatives?

Reply   |   Comment by Maryna  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+12)

Maryna,

Have a look at Mobirise: https://mobirise.com which although there is quite a lot of it free, you can pay for extra modules etc. I have used it & it's quite a good piece of software, also openElement: http://www.openelement.com/ you can download these to your PC. I admit they may not be suitable for absolute beginners. Then, of course there are the many online site builders you can make use of, not forgetting Wordpress etc.

This version is far too basic. It doesn't include "responsive design" and in my opinion no-one should design a website just for PC's.
