Igor, Please improve your system to actually send the email you promise, it's been over 30 minutes, nothing yet (no, it's not in my spam either). I tried a second time, still waiting. No, I don' have another email address for you to try. Have you considered that this inability tends to make you look unprofessional? BTW, I do appreciate you doing the giveaway and was really looking forward to trying your program.

This is an excellent little add-on. It's informative, tidy and efficient. Windoze should buy it.

I don't have a problem with Windows USB remove. If there is a problem with the drive, I reboot the computer and presto, it's fixed.

I think this software is necessary (at least, in my case) every time I try to remove a USB, I got this message: "This device is currently in use. etc..." and if I go to Devices and Printers... It still does not remove the USB.
And apparently, inappropriate removal of a USB could lead to loss of data.
So, thank you SafelyRemove!

Will have to give this a try as there are times when Windows just does not want to disconnect a USB device.

If only there was a program to make windows recognize a USB device and allow it to connect. Have had issues with Insta360 X3 & X5 cameras that Win11 Pro seems to interfere or something is not allowing the cameras & computer to connect. Past rebuilding think I've tried everything. Cannot find the culprit.

At one time I was able synchronize the X3 with Windows. Not sure what causes the issue. Not found any software that can run in the background that can monitor, detect issues of connectivity, nor lead to a fix. If someone knows of such software please chime in.

It is faster to remove the MicroSD cards from Cameras and put in readers, yet over time that is going to wear down the camera's & memory card's plating.

Do USB devices really need to be "safely removed"? I thought they were a hot-swappable medium.

Reply   |   Comment by stanzibar  –  2 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

stanzibar, this would be geared more for hard drives, where you don't want the PC to be writing data to the hard drive as you try to remove it.

Is this software really necessary?

I've been using computers with USB drives for over 20 years and NEVER had any issues using the Windows built in "Safely remove hardware and eject media" option.

I know you'll all downvote me, because places like this are frequented by trolls who downvote everything.

RustyKnight,

I used to use USB Safely Remove in the past (having got it on some Giveaway of the Day page). Of course, this was a long time ago when my PC was running Windows XP.

I lost use of it when I upgraded to Windows 10. As you have rightly said, Windows now handles USB devices quite well so there is no immediate need for this tool.

However, USB Safely Remove has a few advantages over standard Windows functions:

1) Convenience: All your USB devices can be accessed from one place.

2) As you can see in the first screenshot, with USB Safely Remove you can easily bring back a device that you have stopped -- without having to remove and reinsert the device! This is great for instances where your USB device is plugged into the back of your PC (or some other non-reachable area).

3) So you can selectively switch on and off devices as per your needs.

4) Another useful feature (as seen in the screenshot) is that it tells us which process has locked the device, preventing its removal. So you get to know which service or program to close in order to safely remove the device.

5) And one feature I really love is the lovely icons it displays to match the device that's been plugged in. You can easily identify which device is which.

There could also be some more advanced uses (for advanced users). I notice there's an Advanced menu option, but I've forgotten what options are there under it.

As for me, I won't be installing it because Windows 10 is doing a good enough job for me, and I no longer have need of USB Safely Remove's advanced uses.

RustyKnight,

My experience is different. I often get a message that the USB card or drive is in use by something else without telling me what and even using Task Manager I cannot figure out what it is so I have to shut down the PC to remove the USB device safely. Hopefully this will solve that problem.

RustyKnight, I downvoted you not for your doubt, which is legit, but for your final comment about trolls!!!!
I subscribed to GAOTD in October 3, 2008, 2 days after they completed 2 years of excellent service to the community, and I don't remember seeing trolls around.
I work with computers since 1969, and my first personal computer, which I still have today in perfect state, was the Sinclair ZX81 with 48k memory, so I still remember a couple of things about PCs and software.
By the way, this will be the 8th. version of USB Safely Remove that I will install ( the first was v4.1.5 from October 10, 2011 (( which I still have the installation exe)), sorry Crystal Rich Ltd, loyal but not very good client ).
Thanks GAOTD and Crystal Rich Ltd

RustyKnight, I have seen *sometimes* where a storage device was often not possible to be safely removed using standard windows UI because it was still in use, maybe some software was scanning the contents for various reasons, anti-malware or indexing and so on or other software digging around for photos or videos to import. Is it really necessary? most of the time, no... but sometimes yes it is but forcing disconnection with accessing software can have unpredictable results so it may not always be advisable to use it in anger...
And no we wont all downvote you as mostly your experience is shared and some computer novices may have never known about the 'Windows built in "Safely remove hardware and eject media" option.'

"I've been using computers with USB drives for over 20 years and NEVER had any issues using the Windows built in "Safely remove hardware and eject media" option."

I'd take a guess you've also only used USB sticks for plain vanilla tasks. I've got several SSDs in USB external housings, and the USB electronics don't always play nice with Windows Safely Remove. The same with specialized USB sticks that do more than store random data. And then there are USB drive docks, which don't play nice at all if you have multiple drives with mirroring. For me USB Safely Remove is a Necessity!

RustyKnight, totally unnecessary yet another software that trick people who aren't very technologically knowledgeable into getting and paying for something that is already provided by the OS.

RustyKnight, Just makes it easier and faster - for me, anyway. I like this little app better than others I've tried.

RustyKnight, maybe it's not necessary, but the version I used a year or two ago permitted the user to leave the USB drive plugged in and, if desired later, to re-enable the connection without having to unplug from the USB port and re-plug. I imagine this feature is still in the current version. The main reason I appreciated this was that my only USB-3 port was on the back of the desktop PC, and a bit difficult to get at. I guess I could have un-plugged the end of the cable that goes into the external drive, but that often seemed almost as difficult, and if I damaged the pins on the drive it would cost to have it fixed.

I use the previous GAotD version (on Win10 and Win11) and have found it to be excellent!

I was debating buying it, except I wasn't really having any issues so hadn't got around to it.

Thanks, most appreciated!

(There are things like memory cards for cameras I need to be really careful with not corrupting, plus it telling me, at least sometimes, what was locking a card I couldn't remove was very useful...
