Installed with no problems on Win10. Upon opening and trying to use the program I find that the colors are very vibrabant. But, as I try to open new brushes or pens, I get pop-ups stating that this pen or brush could not be opened. Upon closing out the pop-up I find that the pen or brush is indeed there to be used and works fine. But this happens each and every time. That is irritating but is do-able none-the-less. The big problem arises in that most of the time, upon closing out the pop-ups, the program crashes! Such a shame! Thanks anyway GOTD.

Well; had this program (older version) 2 PCs ago. lol

Wasn't going to download it, but did so anyway. Very impressed with the updates since I last had it. It even runs PS plugins and does a fantastic job at it (so it's now my surrogate plugin engine for the GIMP via Shellout). Thank Pixarra and of course GAOTD. I shared this link with other sites I frequent. Well worth the download/install. :)

Installed ok. Looks like lots of great brush effects.
However, finding program controls frustrating. At first, the brush tools were activated by default - from the left hand menu. But when I activated one of the tools from the menu across the top, such as paint bucket,I couldn't get back to the brush tools. No amount of clicking on the brush tools, or right clicking or undoing, will restore access to the brushes. Only the paint tool will work now or another tool from the menu across the top of screen.
How do we regain access to the brushes?

Reply   |   Comment by Wendy  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

It's okay, I discovered that you have to click on the 'Brush' icon from the tools across the top before clicking on the list of brushes on the left.

For those that are having issues installing because of the GOTD Thermia Wrapper, and do not want to disable anti-virus, as spa pointed to many comments below, go to this page http://www.pixarra.com/download.html scroll down into archives and there you will see version 22.03 to download. After that you can input the GOTD registration requirements.
Don't use Firefox thou..for some reason, it messes up the page.
A HUGE thanks to GOTD and Pixarra..had an older version but a bad drive ate it.

As usual, GOTD has offered a wonderful program. Installed on Win7Pro 64bit...not problems with installation or registration. This program has some great functionality - I was using it for simple touch ups until I took the time to learn what else it could do...and I was hooked! Website support is great - I recommend using the User guide...it gives you a better idea of what this software is capable of.

Twisted Brush is a good product but the user interface is way to complex for simple drawing. Using a mouse is difficult and the options are not easy to find when you want something simple. I suggest the excellent freeware Inkscape or MediBang as alternatives if you don't want a long learning curve on your drawing program. The current interface is about where CoralDraw was 10 years ago.

Installed on I7 Win 8.1 laptop. After registration says error, unable to update TwistedBrush.env clicking okay repeats, clicking okay again produces error Unable to open Pixarra Spectrum 01.act1 file for reading. Clicking okay on that produces another TwistedBrush.env error. Then it laves a little "brush control" box on the screen. Last time run it produced a minimized (into upper left corner) book 1 page 1 session that looks like it might be the running program when maximized. I told the install to use drive D: during install, perhaps that has confused it.

TwistedBrush Pro Studio is not bad at all. I have it installed on a Windows tablet that has an active pen & it's nice. The downside, least for me, is I've never had much success with an app like this using a mouse, or a less precise touch screen on a tablet -- I need to use a drawing tablet with a PC, or like I said, a screen that lets you use an active pen.

There are some cheaper Windows tablets with active pens available -- I've seen them mostly on ebay -- & I've seen drawing tablets starting in the $40 range for PCs/laptops on sale at Amazon, Newegg, & Monoprice. A drawing tablet big enough to be useful will set you back closer to $200 OTOH if you go for the name brand, Wacom.

For similar software, I've seen Corel Painter for ~$100 as a full version upgrade on sale, but it's rare -- I've seen the student version for the same price much more often. Corel also has a limited function Essentials version that I've seen sold for around $30, or bundled with other offers. Autodesk has a few apps, I think one of them is free in Windows 10's store. And Krita is an open source alternative that's actively developed & available as a portable app.

mike,
Corel has Paint Shop Pro for about $70 retail but has regular offers for about half that. Download the trial version and they will keep offering better deals as the trial goes on. You may also find it for less on eBay (disc version).

I didn't complete the installation of the program because I rejected the activation of Directplay.
Microsoft announced that Directplay would be deprecated in 2004. As evidenced by other comments, implementing a deprecated feature requires some extra effort. And as documented here

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/games_windows_10/directplay-on-windows-10/d34f924c-63e6-48b9-919e-00f680713b19?auth=1

when you insist on forcing a round peg into a square hole, things are bound to get interesting. With forced Windows 10 upgrades, there is no guarantee that the next upgrade will not remove Directplay completely (e.g. Samba SMB1 file sharing) and the program becomes a brick.
Based on the user ratings, the program is probably pretty decent. My suggestion to Pixarra is to remove the dependency on obsolete Directplay code and come back and repeat your pitch.

I had the same problem at first but found the solution: You need to enable DirectDraw. Go to control panel>programs>programs and features, under that is "turn windows features on or off. Look for section for legacy, expand it and check direct play. All will work fine then.

Pixarra Support,
DirectPlay is not an option on my Win10 Pro's CP→Programs & Features. Upon further research I see where DirectPlay is now discourgaed by MS:
"Microsoft DirectPlay has been deprecated. Deprecated components of "Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for Managed Code" are considered obsolete.

When writing new applications, you should avoid using these deprecated components. When modifying existing applications, you are strongly encouraged to remove any dependency on these components".

So I'm not installing it unless you can convince me otherwise.

Installed and running on windows 10 64bit. As a not very often artist I am going to need much tutoring on this to make it useful so being short on time I don't expect to use it much. Ie I have an existing jpg and I wanted to put a rectangular border round it. After trying intuition and then after half an hour probing at the on line help (maybe I looked on the wrong pages or did a wrong search) I now think I should be using the line command but have not succeeded in getting full control of the brush / paint density. All I want is it to draw a straight thick black line. So in my opinion If you want a lot you have it but if you want simple you don't. Beaten by the clock.

D Murphy,

"... I am going to need much tutoring on this to make it useful..."

I believe the best approach to using TwistedBrush Pro Studio [or alternatives like Krita & Painter] is to think of it as a far less messy, digital alternative to creating artwork on canvas or paper.

"I have an existing jpg and I wanted to put a rectangular border round it."

I think there are 2 main approaches... One, adding a border is included in the feature set of many image editing, publishing, & even office apps, & for image editing software it's also available as plug-ins, often with a bunch of fancier options. The 2nd approach is to use an app that works with both raster images [your jpg] & vector graphics. With vector graphics you basically create instructions for your display &/or printer to create lines, curves, & fills etc. -- the advantage is that the pixels are created on demand, & so can be scaled infinitely... the same graphic will work just as well on a postage stamp as on the side of a bus. To create a border using vector graphics would usually just mean selecting the proper tool, clicking one corner, & dragging to size. You'd set the line width, color, & optionally fill beforehand or adjust it afterward.

D Murphy, if simpler is what you prefer, you may appreciate Photoscape more. It has the function you mentioned within one or two clicks. An extra benefit that's likely not widely known is that you can add your own images to the stamp tool (the one that adds clipart), so you can add additional borders and other image elements if you'd like. I hope this helps.

Carolyn , I think it is something you have done. Can you be more informative? When you say "different laptop" did you mean "new laptop"? What changes have you made to the new laptop since getting it? At what stage do you get the problem? ie can you download and expand the zip file and open the readme file on both or neither of your laptops. What O/S is on each laptop. ie describe your actions and what happened in detail. and someone may be able to advise.

D Murphy, my older laptop was a Toshiba Satellite whereas the newer one is a HP Pavilion. I have made no changes to the HP laptop except for installing AVG Internet Security (I only bought the laptop 5 days ago. The HP one runs on Windows 8.1, whereas the Toshiba one runs on Windows 10. I have the same issue on both laptops - I download the program & unzip the files. I can open all the files, eg. readme, setup. When I open the setup file to install it, the "activating" window appears then "activated" window appears. A new window appears stating that the file has been activated, and then nothing. No installation window or anything. Hope this helps.

As stated in a previous comment, I don't have a problem with any other giveaways on other pages, just this one. Carolyn ,

>"I download the program & unzip the files. I can open all the files, eg. readme, setup. When I open the setup file to install it, the "activating" window appears then "activated" window appears. A new window appears stating that the file has been activated, and then nothing."

This is a common explanation and there is a simple solution that many have not realized.

Since you were able to install the program downloaded from the developer's site, and without having to do anything with your AntiVirus software tells me that the issue is how you are running the setup.exe files from GOTD, which uses a two-part setup. Other giveaway sites do not use a two-part setup so you will have success with them.

I have seen several others explain their issue the same way as you did. They state much like you did that they can unzip the files and that they can open all the files (readme, setup) but what they did not realize is that the unzipping part means to take all the files inside the Zip files and place them in a different folder before attempting to run the setup file.

Windows will allow you to double-click a Zip file, and display its contents. You can even click on the individual files and they will be opened, even the setup.exe file, but the problem is that the setup.exe file needs to be able to access the setup.gcd file and it cannot if it is in the Zip file. Both have to copied to a different folder first.

Because you can double-click the setup.exe file inside the GOTD Zip file is fooling people into thinking they are doing everything correct. Also, many other giveaways distribute a Zip file but the setup.exe file does not need to access another file (one-part setup). In those cases, double-clicking the setup.exe file inside the Zip file generally works just fine. Occasionally we see those situations on GOTD as well. When they also contain a setup.gcd file, they all need to be placed into a standard Windows folder first.

The simplest way to do get the contents of the Zip file into a different location is after you have browsed to the Zip file contents, use Ctrl+A to select all of the files inside the Zip file, Ctrl-C to copy them, then move to a folder outside the Zip file and then do the Ctrl+V to paste the files. This is the same thing as dragging all the files inside the Zip file to a different location.

You can copy them to an entirely new folder, or to the same folder that has the Zip file. If you do this, you will have the Zip file and also copies of the contents of the Zip file in the same folder. The important thing is that it has to be a regular folder, not a Zip file folder.

Once you have a copy "outside" the Zip file, then run that copy of the setup.exe file. It can now access the setup.gcd file that is in the same folder.

Now, you will see the individual steps of he setup file. Without seeing those steps, all you were seeing is the setup file failing to access the setup.gcd file (but not telling you) and then displaying the Software Informer part. The Software Informer does not have a clue whether the program was actually installed or not (it expects that setup worked), so when you click it, it brings up the webpage saying that the program was activated, but obviously it was not.

It is too bad that the GOTD setup file does not give the user an error message indicating that it was not successful in accessing the setup.gcd file, and it should then prevent the Software Informer program from being displayed.

Try this on your next GOTD Zip download. I think you will see the difference and understand why the files need to be "outside" the Zip file.

Gary, Or you can right click the zipped file and choose "Extract all" then click "Extract" in the dialogue that opens; all files within the downloaded zip file will be will be extracted to the already named folder... usually into your downloads folder... No copy/pasting required.

Gary, Thank you so much for taking the time to explain it to me. Very much appreciated :)

Steve,

Thanks Steve. The reason I did not explain using the right click method is because it depends on operating system and any 3rd party programs that handle the zip extension. For example on a Win 7 x64 Pro OS I tested on, there is not an "Extract all" option. Since a single click will get the Zip folder opened where the files are visible, it would work for everyone.

For us, sure right-clicks seem second nature, but for some, right clicks can be problematic when describing steps to take. For example, when you tell someone to right-click, then click something else, sooner or later you will get the response "Do I right click or left click that one?" And if they don't ask, they often do another right click anyway, which does not do what they expected. For that reason, if I can avoid describing steps using a right-click, I will.

The most important part is that the files need to be extracted to a different folder, and now they have multiple ways of accomplishing that objective, so thanks because it will help many others.

I had this software many years ago and never got it again when the computer it was installed on died. It's great for making digital paintings and I look forward to playing with it again after all this time.

Installed easily and with no troubles on my Win 8 64 bit computer.

One point of minor confusion; it claims "64 Bit imaging" in the description, but installed to my x86 program folder. Is it 64 bit or not? I hate to admit it, but I am not sure how to tell if it s a 32 bit program or a 64 bit program that installed to the wrong folder. I guess I'll have to try to make an image that's over 4GB and find out that way...

Noah Body, imo its not about the 64 bit operating system but 64 bit in color depth of the image
