At least this version works, big improvement over previous. Don't like the resource load on disk and a little cpu. Also don't see a convenient way to toggle this on and off, can still communicate between machines but outside network/internet connection is cutoff, probably because the hosts file modification! Probably can't keep this in the current arrangement..

I see few understood what my post #25 was talking about.

Oh well. C'est la vie, as they say in Paree!

Still the same 'thumbs down' for the vast majority of downloaders.
I'm sure many have come to realize that by now.

Thought I'd have time to install this. Got a key and everything. The installer just sits there and says "The Requested Operation Requires Elevation". I'm running as the admin with full control. Pity. I really wanted to try this out

Either they lie or they are asleep at the switch, because I have waited a long time now for the license activation key which the message they display said "has been sent". That is the past tense meaning it should have already been sent as of the time that statement was displayed, and it takes only seconds in a normal case for such a key to be received in my email account. I tried another email account to see if that made any difference and it did not. I use bellsouth.net and att.net, which are both implemented by way of Yahoo.com, if that has any relevance. I sure hope the key can still be used if and when I finally get it, as I noticed that your "readme" note did not say it had to be activated today as it usually does. Otherwise, I would ask this offer to be run again after the problem is fixed. I am a faithful follower of this site with over a hundred of your software offers installed, and I don't usually have a problem.

Oh how I wish I could use this! This has to be one of the best offers we've had on GAOTD for a while now, but it really IS for the commercial network admin ... would have loved to play with it a few years ago, before I retired! Anyway, a big thanks to the vendor who decided to make this available to us for free.

Hope the activation will last long enough for me to get a machine to act as a gateway. I've been planning on it for a few weeks now but It's not going to be delivered for two weeks yet :(

Can there please be an extension on the activation expiry please Smart Soft/GAOTD?

Thank you for the giveaway! One of my businesses is a web hosting service and I am wondering if you might be able to help me understand something about this giveaway: My hosting service already offers boxtrapper and Spam Assassin as normal services included with every hosting account. I am wondering how this may either assist my customers reduce spam and attacks more or help them in any additional manners. As I will not be installing the software on the server though, how can my clients really benefit (giveaway or purchase)? I'm just not sure I follow how this all works given the need for a dedicated PC directed network.

Thanks!
Jennifer

It's been clear for some time that the voting system on this site is a joke, now it's clear the comments system is a joke as well. Shortly after the giveaway began people pointing out the obvious contradiction between the purpose of this software and strictly personal usage clause were mostly receiving positive votes for their comments, now they're being voted overwhelmingly down. Surely this is pure coincidence and the authors of this software had nothing to do with it.

@ Giovanni's 2nd comment (currently @28): if you were smart enough (instead of "enough smart") you'd know that not everything can be made portable - some software doesn't work with Cameyo (or its' ilk). How do you tell a real "guru"? They don't call themselves a "guru", let alone a "GURU"! LOL!

I didn't say that my FREE ALTERNATIVE is better than this GAOTD: where did you read it?

But I think you agree with me that 200 bucks is a lot of money, isn't it?

That being said I have to admit that I'm not an expert of this kind of apps simply bcs unfortunately I don't own any small-medium sized business (but I'm planning to open one soon....so let's wait and see!!).

But if you have a PC network at home you could test both this GAOTD and my FREE alternative on your own: what's the problem in doing that?
Have you tried SCROLLOUT (the FREE alternative mentioned in my post)??

As far as I know SCROLLOUT got excellent reviews on the net...that's why I quoted it as best free alternative!

That's it!!

I find the following posting by:

@Laurel

...It is not suited to be installed on an end-user PC. You should install it on a PC serving as a gateway for your LAN.

I'm using a Cisco Linksys E3000 router. How would I use this software with my current configuration, since I don't have a PC serving as a gateway.

Networking tools that I have used in the past for companies, usually have software running on a PC that monitors the network activity and etc.

#15, Staq (and #13, Giovanni):

It is always nice to hear about alternatives; however, in fairness, as a minimum their advantages (if any) should be outlined/compared at least a bit more other than to say they have certain features and therefore are "better", or are "free" (which today's GOTD is as well, keeping the playing field level for a day).

Although alternatives may be "free every day!" and have more bell-and-whistle features than one could ever hope to use, if they are not user-friendly or effective and reliable and a PITA, it may well be worth the money to consider paying for something that is a joy to use in spite of having less capability.

So please share your experiences with the rest of us that are ignorant in using these kinds of software applications.

You are referring to the free LITE edition of UNTANGLE, which may lack some of the features of today's offer here at GOTD:

http://www.untangle.com/store/lite-package.html

All the other editions with more features require a substantial up-front payment and/or substantial on-going subscriptions:

http://www.untangle.com/store/configurator/

As an experienced user of this kind of software, could you discuss your experience using UNTANGLE, and compare it against today's TRAFFIC INSPECTOR?

Also, how does your current version which you state you have used for years compare against what is now being offered as UNTANGLED LITE? That is, are you "grandfathered in" with an older free edition that is more versatile and/or has more features than can be obtained today?:

http://www.untangle.com/software-packages

vs. Traffic Inspector:

http://www.trafinsp.com/products/Traffic-Inspector/features/

Anyway, thanks everybody for all the alternatives (free OR paid) to consider -- always very educational here at GOTD!

This is a very robust application. It seems to me to be a bit of a C-Panel for a home network, it has very intuitive options and everything is configurable. Whatever bugs were found by other posters, seem to have been fixed for my install and registration. Thanks!

I would like to ask a question to the developers, in the the Control panel under "Activation" there is a new version available 3.0.0.803. There is also an active download link, can we update this to the newest edition?

Thanks for this application GAOTD and Traffic Inspector.

So this is not for the end user, eh? It IS for a small business of some kind. Okay, so what exactly does it DO for a small business? And under what circumstances?

So far its anything but crystal clear why I would want this, or what it can do for me. Precisely how will this aid my business in conducting its affairs? If we don't exactly know, then that's quite an investment.

There's too much geek-speak here, and not enough nitty-gritty-speak. I'd venture that very few have any idea what they would actually do with this, in real-time, or realize what would be gained from it. That certainly includes me.

NR 13, What? No portable version listed? I'm disapointed.

Cool program. Install went fine. Starting a security class at the local college so this will come in handy for "research" LOL.

Can't wait to see what it can do. At home, I have 15 clients (devices) using IP's on my network on a slow day (kids not visiting). So this will be useful for that also.

I'd like to thank Smart-soft for their comments 16 and 17. They clarified my questions for me. I think this is a bargain for GAOTD and a good product for small companies and for homeowners who have a LAN and a gateway. It provided sophisticated, professional ways to control network traffic to homes or multi-unit dwellings and small businesses to manage network and network access. If network traffic monitoring, filtering and control are issues then it might be a good idea to install a cheap, dedicate gateway to you LAN.

It isn't an end user or client side product. In other words, it is what it is and and it does what it says it will do. What more can you ask.
Thumbs up for me.

@GertJ

Traffic Inspector is currently available for free. It comes with a 5-user license (up to 5 user accounts can be created). Kaspersky Antivirus Gateway is not included in the giveaway version of the program. A decision has been made to allow commercial usage.

Traffic Inspector is a gateway solution. It is designed to be installed on a PC that is used as a gateway for LAN network. Once again, it is not designed to be installed on an end-user PC. Installation and initial setup are described here:

http://www.trafinsp.com/support/video/first/
http://www.trafinsp.com/support/video/web-access-control/

The first video covers program installation and activation. The second video is about setting up web access policies.

Our product is pretty versatile. It is suitable for small and medium-sized businesses and you can use it at home. Also, a decision has been made to allow commercial usage. 2 short comments:

1) Kaspersky = 2 thumbs up!

2) WOT = 2 thumbs down.......

I am guessing that TI and GOTD is giving this here so that you can try it at home, personally, then spend the 2 bills to use it for its purpose with business, and legally. ;)

I'll pass because I don't really need it, especially for $200.00 AND, especially AND, because WOT is involved with it.

I'll be back. Thanks GOTD! :)

hmmm very interesting and unique piece of software todays (at least it's not a video converter...woh!!).

At first, when I saw its short description, I thought: oh, looks like addressed for small and medium-sized businesses, advanced users and professional people (ie company's employees), so for sure it will get a very poor score by GAOTD readers...

But surprise, surprise ==> 67% THUMBS UP at the moment!

Not sure if I really need it, since I have the award-winning BITDEFENDER INTERNET SECURITY 2014 running in my system (obviously got it for FREE ==> LOL!!), but this SMTP gateway seems a great way to complement the Windows' network capabilities, which are in my view not so great when security issues come into play.

Basically includes 2 main modules:

a) the "Kaspersky Gate Antivirus" to protect your network against external network attacks

b) AntiSpam Module for protecting corporate mail server so as to filter out spam, malware and unwanted email.

It also sports very advanced Routing functions, such as the ability to set the bandwidht speed limit, as well as prioritize the network traffic in favour of certain channels (VoIP, video, satellite etc...).

So overall this tool looks like a very good and handy piece of software, as long as you own a small and medium-sized businesses (how about the "strictly personal usage" limitation?? huh!!) or at least have a network of different PCs at home.

If you are just a home user I think you don't need it (and again I wonder how the heck it got 64% Thumbs UP so far).

That's why it costs a whopping 200 bucks!!!!

Now, given the nature of this GAOTD, you may think that Giovanni for the first time in history is not able to give you FREE ALTERNATIVES....right?

You are dead wrong dudes....LOL!!

Since this product is so pricey without the giveaway offer in place and that it is one of the most valuable giveaways ever, I would say that downloading it is quite necessary if you are thinking of starting your own business and more importantly, if you have your own network.

Sadly though, this product is only for commercial use (for the moment) and there are little to none scenarios when this type of product can be used in non-commercial areas.

at first I was thinking this would be great for website owners (admins)
then I went to their page and was checking it out and noticed it was for the home and/or business computers, and that is what confused me,
Can't all this be done using the parental controls already set up on all computers????

if I am wrong please correct me

Thank you GAOD & Smart-Soft for offering this but I'm going to hold out until I hear what others think about this 8=)

Come on give us the needed information:
Based on the $199,40 this will be the minimum based 5 account licensing, and without Kaspersky Antivirus Gateway
And again Giveways terms & conditions "3) Strictly personal usage." makes no sense with this corporation targeted application.
Plus updates will stop after 1 year.

Worse installing this software on any windows machine on local network does not change any security for all other machines without other modifications, so please wakeup and provide us with the needed information & setup requirements, as even on their website the needed information are not there.

Very Very Close to 100% of normal users will not know how to use this software, and will waist time just trying to find out if this are something they need.

2) commercial usage is allowed for this title.
