I also tried to install several times - Win 7 Pro 64, Avast
And, of course, without success. Constant error! I finally gave up!

Been trying to install it for twenty mins. Keep getting the same error: "The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program." I've downloaded a new 'setup' file like 4 times. Same thing. Amanda

The software is great but, what I don't like is that after buying version 5.x I've realized that I was entitled to receive updates only as long the updat is still version 5.x. As soon as version 6.x came out, I was no longer entitled for free update and was asked to buy the new 6.x version. Not so nice.

Can a technical expert explain why installing ANY programme should require the anti-virus to be turned off?
I have had this issue with a couple of programmes previously from GAOTD that required me to close Zemana AntiLogger so I didn't download them, but I don't really understand why they are not writtento take the AV into consideration.

For what I do, Classic Shell does all I want. No need to monkey around with other ways. Now if I had seen this 1 year ago when I was first looking, I might have tried it, but Classic Shell has always had good reviews and has worked quite well.

dessertbunny, so you managed to install this version and still keep your previous version of it as well?

If so, can you select which one to load?

I have some concerns about overwriting the previous version and having this version die, as someone here has posted happened to them.

After viewing the instructional video I will stick to a trouble free and already installed feature of my Windows operating system.

The feature is called "shortcuts". My desktop is covered with shortcuts to folders with shortcuts to similar program shortcuts and individual shortcuts on the desktop that I use the most. And it doesn't take multiple clicks to open a program.

Using the built in feature has no problems with turning off anti virus to download either. If you don't like the clutter of many shortcuts just put them into one "shortcut folder".

I am also a long time user of Classic Menu.

I have used this for several years and really like it. A bit concerned about the comments regarding installing this over the previous version, then having the program stop working - I may hold off a few hours, see who else chimes in.

One hint: Shortcuts/programs you place on this Start Menu do not get placed on Windows' original Start Menu (at least not in Win 7 Pro), so if you stop using it and revert to the built-in Windows Start Menu, anything you added while running this will not appear. All the programs you installed are still there, of course, but their Start Menu shortcuts will be gone.

Reply   |   Comment by DD  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

DD, My advise is to uninstall the old version. That's the only way, I could make it work, and I think, that has something to do with the registration process. The EXE get "confused", when there's another licenced version somehow....I guess. Well, it worked for me

When Windows 8 was about to be released we purchased a 2-pack of Windows 8 Pro for $69.99 at Staples.com on a special deal they were running. No one will be surprised when I say that, although the underlying system had some major improvements over Win 7, the user interface was truly awful. So, we bought a copy of Start 8 from Stardock for $4.99 for our laptop and downloaded the free Classic Shell for the GF's PC. Both pieces of software made Win 8 and 8.1 easy to use. She was happy with Classic Shell, and when I used her PC sometimes I also thought it was perfectly OK. Start 8 was a little nicer, yet very similar in everyday use.
Start Menu X Pro takes the "usability" factor to the next level by offering several user interfaces. You can choose which one suits you best, and go from there. Power users may get the most value from it, but all will appreciate the logical choices made in the design. As i recall, there's a free version of Start Menu X if you want to get an idea of how well designed the software is.

Watched the video, and from what i was seeing, it does not have any advantages over the Windows 10 Start Menu system. I set my Windows 10 Start menu up to be exactly like this, intuitively. What I see in the video shows you have to click the Start button to call up this menu. Same thing with the Windows 10 Start Menu. In this one you setup categories for the different types of program shortcuts you use most. Same thing with Windows 10. Clicking on a Shortcut icon in either launches that program without having to double click. So I cannot see an advantage in this one over what I have setup already. In fact The Windows 10 Start Menu has a feature I did not see in this one; the ability to resize the Start Menu Icon tiles. All the icons in this one look to be the default 91x91px thumbnail size.

So could someone here tell me what it is I am missing about this?

This is more useful on a machine running Windows 8.1. I still run W8.1 on my desktop because I didn't want to lose Windows Media Center by upgrading to W10. Personally, I wouldn't put this on a W10 machine because I prefer the new Start Menu.

Reply   |   Comment by mike od  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

L. Cleveland Major, What this program provides is a return to the familiar style of Windows 7, but with added extras and the opportunity to customise it. The Windows 10 menu is still there - just hold Shift while pressing the start button - so you get best of both worlds.

Extremely easy install, comes pre-activated. Just extract the files and run setup. Reboot and you're all done. I am running the built-in anti-virus in Windows 10, so I did not need to pause it.

I've been using this for years and it really makes life easier.

I tried to install this package and all I got was the GAOTD startup and closing displays with nothing installing.

The PC is Win 10 Build 14393.rs1 and has run the program before, I wanted to try it again to see if the changes meet my needs.

Very disappointed, whoever created the download did not take due diligence.

Great program, been using for some years now. I have the paid/registered version now after using one of the GOTD versions sometime back. Take some getting used to things, but don't be put off by defauts, most things are adjustable but you will have to read up on some features.

This might be a good program, but on my Toshiba Laptop with Windows 10 Home 64 Bit, I use Classic Shell .. it brings the Start Menu back to how XP used to look and has some other useful tweaks in it as well. It is also totally free.

Reply   |   Comment by bruce  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

john, Quite simply, since GOTD programs will not allow reinstall after the offer date. Also why try something that costs money, when I already have a program that does for me, exactly what I want it to do. It does not seem to be worth the cost to me.

Reply   |   Comment by Brenda  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Brenda,

In Win 10 you can find it via Settings>Personalization>Start.
You can turn on "show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar".

I've turned this off since Cortana should be able to find it.

ACE PROGRAM.

One of the best GAOTD offerings ever.
Prob need to turn firewall off before install (Right click task-bar icon) and it also may ask to remove old version and shut down/restart before installing. (Dont forget temp firewall disable after restart.)

Pro version with no upgrades being offered so get it before its too late.
No complicated registering process - it should come pre registered.

John Webb, if you have AVG or IObit malware fighter installed you have to disable them before install the software, because they stop the installation.

John Webb,
Turn off firewall temporarily (Right click tray icon) And try again.

If not it'll be the Anti-Virus program.

Easier to turn them all off and do a shut down restart after install IMO.

Terry E, Poor advice. Turn off firewall and AV? I'll do neither. They exist for your protection. Turning them off is the kind "social engineering" that results in system compromises.

I have the previous GAotD version and found it extremely useful, so will recommend this one. Also it's trivial to exit back to the Windows Start Menu if that works better for something.

Reply   |   Comment by JohnL  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Okay, it stopped working in me after a little while (icon went dark and didn't respond, needed a task manager kill and ctrl-win to get Windows start menu to restart it) so make that "recommended with reservations". I'll still leave the thumbs-up as it might well just be my configuration (Win10 Pro x64).

Reply   |   Comment by JohnL  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Okay, it did it again, very quickly after my restarting it, so I'd say that IMHO if you have 5.87 from a previous give-away then stick with it...
I guess I can't reinstall 5.87 so am moving on without it.

M. H., I couldn't force it to go wrong, it just did it all on its own, and quite quickly, I think 4 times in total. It is possible it's just something about my system that it doesn't like, so it may work fine for other people, but I thought worth mentioning.
