Denys, are you there?

I installed this and saw the special offer for the paid version -- very reasonable, as always with this company. I was about to pay for it, but decided to do a little testing first. I had noticed that a new feature is the ability to switch between Start Menu X and Start Menu 10. I figured out how to do that and switched to Start Menu 10, but couldn't get the Start Menu 10 to display, using either the keyboard or the mouse. (I'm running 64-bit Windows 10.)

I went into the options again and switched back to Start Menu X, but it wouldn't work either.

With either X or 10, if I set it to start with the Windows key, it doesn't work but the standard menu works with Shift+Windows. If I set it to start with the Shift+Windows key, it doesn't work but the standard menu works with the Windows key.

I haven't had this installed recently but it's worked fine in the past. If I don't hear back from Denys (the developer), I may have to try installing an older version. (5.87, maybe?)

It's a great program and I do recommend it if it works for you.

Had no trouble installing it on a Win 10 Haswell i5, and it seems okay, so thumbs up, but one puzzling feature is getting an email from the publisher inviting me to download the latest version for free, which is said to be Start Menu X Pro 6.11, whereas the installed version is Start Menu X 6.11 gotd. I might pass on the offer until someone can explain it to me.

Can someone please tell me how this program compares to Stardocks Start 10 as I have always used this and I am curious if there is any advantages to using Start Menu X Pro over it?

Thanks.

Sad news, everyone.

After months of deliberation, I have decided to stop the development of Classic Shell.

It was a great adventure for me that lasted 8 fun and exciting years. It started back in 2009 as a simple weekend project and over time grew to be a hugely popular software brand with many millions of downloads. It was in large part due to all of you, the active Classic Shell community, that reported issues, suggested features, provided translations, developed new skins and participated in forum discussions. My thanks go to you for your continued support and encouragement.

And of course, special thanks to Gaurav Kale, who stuck with me from the early days to the end. His passion for all things Windows was instrumental to the Classic Shell success.

There were few factors that led to my decision:
1) Lack of free time. I have other hobbies that demand my time, some related to software and some not. It requires a lot of effort to add new major features to Classic Shell and keep it relevant. Even keeping it running on newer version of Windows is a lot of work. That leads me to point #2

2) Windows 10 is being updated way too frequently (twice a year) and each new version changes something that breaks Classic Shell. And

3) Each new version of Windows moves further away from the classic Win32 programming model, which allowed room for a lot of tinkering. The new ways things are done make it very difficult to achieve the same customizations

So, moving forward, I am making the latest version of Classic Shell open-source and adding it back to SourceForge (https://sourceforge.net/projects/classicshell/), where it all began. I encourage other people to fork it and go with it.
I will keep the MediaFire download mirror for another 6 months. The forum on http://www.classicshell.net/forum/ will stay open until the end of 2018, however I will not frequently participate in the discussions.

Update: The source code can be also found on GitHub here: https://github.com/coddec/Classic-Shell

Installed on HP desktop, about two years old. Restarted after installation, and screen came up black, with only a couple of startup programs visible on black background. Task Manager shows StartMenuX Pro 6.11 is running, using no memory or CPU. No apparent visibility of program GUI to enable me to reset style to Classic menu.

Darrell Cross, There should be a key combination to bring it up, or just the start button, if visible.

The most obvious benefit of Start Menu X is that it shows a FULL list of programs when you click on Start/Programs. No more scrolling up and down your entire list of installed programs and apps!

As for the Virtual Groups thing, it looks too complicated to be convenient. I'll stick with folders on the desktop. Our PC has a number of desktop icons for programs associated with video, for example. The desktop icons were created, as usual, when the programs were installed. Ours include a couple of webcam apps, screen recording/capture programs, editing programs, etc. So, we made a new desktop folder, named it Video Stuff and dragged all the desktop icons which seemed appropriate into that new folder. It took maybe 30 or 40 seconds. So, why do we need a more complicated menu system with Virtual Groups?

Ebony,
Classic Shell is most likely set to run at Windows start up. So it start each time you turn on your computer. Go through Classic Shell's options and uncheck the option for it to run at start up. Then run Start Menu X.

Another option is to just exit out of Classic Menu, Then you can check out Start Menu X. Decide which one you prefer and make that one start with your computer.

I've had StartMenu X 6.00 for a couple of years, but it just stopped working. It shows up in Programs and Features, but not on the Windows 10 start menu. Now tried installing this 6.11 from here, and get a message that it's activated, but it does not come up when I press the Windows key and does not show up in Programs and Features. Tried to End Task AVG on Task Manager, but nothing happens. What do I do now?

Things just got worse: Now, though I have not uninstalled it, StartMenu 6.00 is no longer listed as installed.

Oops! SMx is still listed as installed, and started working once I rebooted. But try as I might to install 6.11, all I have is 6.00.

But Classic Shell still works on the latest version of Windows 10, I'll stay with Classic Shell up to the day it stops working

I have been using 6.1 for a long while, having obtained it through GOTD. I am completely satisfied with it.

So, my issue is, why would I need to upgrade to 6.11? I've searched their website and can find no guidance. I'll check back here later today to see if anyone posts any good reason to "upgrade." Otherwise, I am going to not fix something that is not broken.

Looking forward to any comments. Wish the developer would comment.

I purchased this a couple of years ago and do not regret it one bit. I can find almost instantaneously any program installed. And I can make folders grouping similar programs together, in the index (Start Menu listing), My start button is now Angry Bird...there are several alternatives to choose from. The author of this great little program is very helpful. I had reason to email him when I lost my serial number (reformatted my computer), and received an answer within hours, I would (and do) recommend this program to everyone and anyone. It's worth every penny I paid for it!

I've tried this on several occasions and despite the bells and whistles, I always quickly come back to the free Classic Start Menu from Classic Shell.

It just does the job and does it well.

Using the paid version 6.11 on windows 10 and no issues here, been using the program for a few years now on different OS versions and have always been very pleased with it, no issues of any kind.

Chrome has blocked this download on my computer - any ideas why?

.
[ Eli ],

In the Chrome browser tray where it shows the download process, click [ Show All ], then on the new tab showing the list of downloads, click [ Save Dangerous File Anyway ], [ Yes ], and enjoy.

Why does any program call something dangerous without explanation?

It's like Sister Mary Pontificatious telling you you'll go blind if you do that ... seriously?

Eli, It did the same for me, although I could download it in IE and the Anti-Virus didn't complain so I'm assuming is okay... but obviously not promising...

I have this version of this program already installed and I will be uninstalling it. I don't know if it's the program or something about my computer (Win 10-64) that's not right but several times I've noticed in task manager that Start Menu X is using over 25% of my cpu and I have to kill it.

Reply   |   Comment by Sarah  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+32)

Sarah,

Are you sure it is 25% and not 25 MB?

Coz my task manager shows 25 MB.

Been using Start Menu X for years. Both pay and free. Never a problem with it. It's a great piece of software! I'm using Windows 7 Pro. but if you want to get rid of using tiles in the later versions, this is your answer. Thanks to GOTD and Start Menu X

I use 5.87 all the time and think it's great, but found the 6.1 Giveaway used to lock up, so a bit nervous about this one... I'll let you know how I get on if I feel brave enough... but I can't find a "History of Changes" to know if 6.11 fixed anything that might be encouraging...
As I like 5.87 so much it's a cautious thumbs-up...

Comments from 6.1:
Okay, it stopped working for me after a little while (icon went dark and didn't respond, needed a task manager kill and ctrl-win to get Windows start menu to restart it) so make that "recommended with reservations". I'll still leave the thumbs-up as it might well just be my configuration (Win10 Pro x64).
...
Okay, it did it again, very quickly after my restarting it, so I'd say that IMHO if you have 5.87 from a previous give-away then stick with it...
I guess I can't reinstall 5.87 so am moving on without it.
...
(This one not by me) JohnL,
It stopped working for me too on my Win 10 laptop. Went back to Classic Start menu.

I have used the pro version for a long time with never an issue. While the icon goes dark at times, it always starts up when I click on it. Using 6.11 on a Win10 machine

JohnL, Try checking out Cnet.. type in Start Menu X Pro. It sometimes offers earlier versions.. Scroll down the page and look for it, you might get lucky. If not then go to majorgeeks dot com, type in start menu x 5.87 and see if that may pop up.
