SonicPhoto is an audio program to convert from pictures to sound. Use your existing photo collection or draw your own in Photoshop (or any other paint editor) and with a click of a button, watch SonicPhoto create the sound before your eyes. Inspired by the existing PhotoSounder program from Michel Rouzic, SonicPhoto loses the internal paint editor and sound importer, but gains automatic and convincing stereo, and a unique harmony filter to help create distinct and professional effects ranging from sparkling synths and rippling arpeggios, to roaring bass and metallic drones.

Key features

  • Create an infinite variety of sounds ranging based on the patterns found in any picture
  • Instrument and harmony quantization so you can create tonal sounds
  • Dozens of in-built presets, so you can immediately try sounds out and experiment
  • Convincing stereo is automatically added to all sounds
  • Very easy to use GUI with everything you need at a click of a button
  • Well thought out system for loading and save custom projects
  • Instantly adjust the quality to suit your needs (low for preview, high for final result)

fun little program, but personally I don't see how anyone in their right mind would pay $29 for it, much less the $69 for the full thing. While I will enjoy it as a novelty when bored, this isn't something I would ever buy. Thankfully it's portable so I can move it off the computer and not waste space with it. Gonna keep it and play for awhile, but not sure how long the novelty of it will last

Interesting to play with for 10 minutes. It's not clear which part of the image relates to which part of the sound. So this is more like a random sound generator.

First, thank you for making it portable.

I don't find this to be especially useful in most cases, but I think it's a rather interesting and fun toy that I'll need to spend a bit of time with to learn it. I started out by playing an assortment of very different images, and learned approximately what sounds would be generated for various attributes of images. I think next I'll start playing with color :D

It works. Only limitation I found was a 45 sec time limit for sound recordings. As an exe file it is fully transportable. As to the usefulness, it needs exploring. With some artistic input it may be a very interesting tool to play with. Thanks GOTD

Question for developer. Interesting program which seems to function ok, although I have only tested it on the default settings so far. But when run or closed down, the message "Error writing default prefs" pops up. What is the significance of that? Win 7. Thanks.

SP dev here. Make sure you don't stick the SonicPhoto folder in the standard Windows Program files location as Windows is strict about saving in that location (since SonicPhoto is portable, it tries to save to its own folder rather than litter your drive with files all over the place).

One thing is puzzling. In the installation document it says...

"This is a portable version that requires no installation."

Yet if that is true, why and if so, how does one complete the instructions given below which state that one must "install and activate it before the Giveaway offer for the software is over."

Those terms and conditions are very confusing.

No activation or installation is necessary. The software runs forever.

Good little program for samples, seems to work well, (2.82 mb) Very, very, small footprint on the hard drive.
Same comment as #8 Kiwiboy There dosn't seem to be a way to set a defaul folder to star from, I haven't found it yet if there is one, it would help me a lot.
Thanks GAOTD & Skytopia for the free offer of this program.

I have been playing with it for a little while. It's actually a pretty nice program. Once I learned how to manipulate certain things I started getting some really spacey stuff.

There are a lot of good suggestions here but I will comment on just two: 1) not being able to change the work folder, and 2) not having drag-and-drop.

With software like this, and the fact that we value our "Kodak-moments" so highly, I am indeed grateful that the perceived shortcomings have been put in place. These issues mean that you must intentionally COPY the image from its original location and then work on it ... thus preserving the original.

For this reason and for the fact that it is a portable version, I highly recommend it !

This is an exemplary giveaway today. Portable software means that the users of this site can try out the Giveaways without the issue of creating registry bloat, nor other tiny leftover files that could have the potential of becoming malware. Nor would there be constant problems of activation..

All the other security safeguards can be built into the portable app as easily as an installed app. No-installation software has been used by Apple for decades. It is the future for the PC too ?.

I had to disable my Panda Antivirus to run this. Seemed like a neat toy but it's a portable stripped down demo. If you actually try to change the settings you get messages like this: "Upgrade further to remove this restriction." http://imgur.com/a/qfEeN This example was the quality of the sound. This will tell you how limited this demo is. The maximum quality is 4592 but this demo limits the quality to 800. Only 17% of the quality the real version has? No thanks!

It would SO much more interesting if the vertical line shown in the video were in the product. As it is I don't know where each generated piece of sound is in the picture.

The total folder size is 3 meg, so on a 1TB drive you could fit 333,333 of these :) The software does not run as a service, so once closed it never touches your processor.

Is there at practical use for this program? I have always wondered about adding sound to pictures, but what does that really do? Every time I watch a movie, directors use it on motion pictures, all very subjective, and now here we have something somehow connected to the image, but unlike music, the image was not a "composition", more of a random obfuscation; but there is a feature to tune something unintelligible to a harmony? Reminds me of Darwin, lighting hit a puddle and we got life. I would like to see this go a step further and as a tool to define harmony in art by recommending arrangements of form. How did the program harmonize? What logic was used there?

The reverse of this program; creating a photo from existing music. What would the 1812 overture look like?

Might would be good to use to replace sounds used in games, make weird sounding weapons. Sounds of short duration other than that don't know what else it would be good for. I'm sure it would keep kids busy for a while playing with it.

This is a fun toy!

I would suggest adding Batch Processing. That would let us load each frame of short animations, or even animated .gif files, and string the audio together so we can listen to our animations.

Sorry, I had issues getting Idea Informer to work, so am suggesting it in the comments.

Neat program, great fun! On a quick try, here are my comments:

Pros:
It is portable, so doesn't need an install (or uninstall if one doen't like it). No registration needed, so just had to download, unzip and start playing :-)

As a photographer who displays his pictures occasionally, I am always looking for suitable background music to accompany my slide show. This does it beautifully! I have tried a few effects, and they make the pictures sound right... probably matching the photos' histogram.

Resizable, highly configurable, etc. And great fun!

Cons:
The only one I can see so far is that I can't "point" it to the folder where I store my photos - it defaults to the demo-projects folder.. Each time I choose a different preset, it loads a preselected picture from the demo folder so I have to relocate the image I had previously loaded. Perhaps there's a setting for it, but I haven't found it yet.

Thumbs up from down under!!!

One of these fascinating toys the information technology makes available to everybody these days...

The issue seems to me that it is something only me can enjoy, unless I tell those I share my projects with the reason why I make them hear specific sounds over specific images, or they will just miss the point and see no interest in it.

I am still trying to figure out some practicle artistic use beyond playing with it for a while, although I am open to any suggestion, and as it is free and portable...

(What we are offered here is the silver version, which allows a 45 seconds maximum duration of the sound.)

I've been wanting to try this photosounder style software for some time now, but the demo limitations put me off. Thanks so much GOTD for this. I create a lot of ambient type tracks, and often use fractal generators for music. This is a great way to turn my fractal images into music. Perfect.

Though not in its spec, I was hoping it would help compose tunes and melodies, but it’s more sound effects of fairly short duration without a discernible underlying tune. So music composition isn’t going to become automated thru this tool.

To be fair, it’s good at what it does for those who want that sort of thing, and the sounds generated do seem to match the visual image.

I can NOT really understand the use of this P'culiar program !!

To me, it would seem a waste of HD space - so I'm not going to waste time downloading it - especially after taking the time to listen to the "demo" sounds created by the producers of this program.

As ever, YMMV.
