Song Surgeon Trainer is an entry level desktop audio slow downer. It changes key and tempo, allows the creation of one looping area for repetitive playing, and has a 9 band EQ. All of these features can be applied in real time. Song Surgeon Trainer allows musicians to access to the power of slowing down and looping audio as a learning tool. Results from our survey of musicians showed that slowing down a song or music piece as a means of practice increased their learning ability by an average of 614%.

once received the download in Setup.msi format, not the usual way in Setup.exe with Setup.gcd, has problem.

the readme say, 'To activate your free copy enter the registration information into the pop-up window. Your computer will be licensed in the developer's database.', but there is no product key info in the file, empty.

and never mind, just click install, a while later a pop up say "the free giveaway has expired", no action, cannot run the s/w.

yesterday got luck, today no luck. any tips from GOTD?

Excellent & useful piece of basic entry level software !!
It changes the tempo without changing the pitch and changes the pitch in increments without distortion or sounding too "Chipmunky".
THX Song Surgeon !!

I used to work for a company that made, among other things, professional audio boxes used in the music industry to do just this: change the pitch and/or tempo of sounds in real time (among many other audio effects). Compared to the boxes I am used to hearing, this leaves many (undesired) artifacts in the output sound. That said, for my purposes (changing the tempo of a song for casual listening) it works quite adequately. I would not use it for recording, but just for relaxing to music, It's fine.

It could be improved by increasing the range of tempo changes, perhaps up 100% or even 200% instead of just 50%, and maybe down to 25% instead of 50%.

Jim, what's the quality like?
I need to slow down a voice recording with bad echo to try and understand it.
I tried Audacity, but it was no good.
Anybody got any ideas please?

As a semi professional musician I'm always on the lookout for software that can help with various tasks and seeing today's offering I thought it might be worth seeing what all the fuss is about. After downloading and installing I tried it on several different tracks, I used my own stuff so I had a very clear idea of how good bad, bad or indifferent this software actually was and after quite a few hours decided it wasn't of any use to any professional musician, the results were very poor. However, it is a fun program, good to mess around with but that's as far as it goes. I can see what the developer was trying to achieve but they never quite got there. You can't beat learning a song using the lyric sheets and sheet music with a bit of improvisation thrown for good measure. Fun, but not quite there.

"........Results from our survey of musicians showed that slowing down a song or music piece as a means of practice increased their learning ability by an average of 614%."
First, no real musician will use this amateurish software,
Second, the 614% is a made up number,
Third, how many real musicians ever heard of this software.
Fourth, someone who like to be or has the ability to be musician will install studio quality synthesizers.
Fifth, a real musician will not rely on 20 years old algorithm to loop at different speeds and tempos just to hear his/her voice with scratchy sounds or sounds like the chimp monks.

If the developer said: this is a software for fun and to waste some time or give it to your kids to pretend they are musicians, I will agree with it. No real musician will ever install this software.

There are several free products that do the same thing.
Video Surgeon looks useful though.

I've found that the free VLC Media Player works much better.

Jim, VLC media player has a feature that does what todays giveaway does?

Reply   |   Comment by seagrape  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

seagrape, I've used it to slow down guitar riffs while keeping the original tone. It makes it much easier to figure complex lead parts in some of Joe Satriani's work and others.

I was going to install and try this GOTD until I read this on the author's webpage:

"The two biggest differences between Trainer and these other two models is that Trainer doesn't have the ability to save changes to a file and, it uses an older time stretching algorithm, so audio quality after key and tempo change may not be as good, especially when substantial changes in key or tempo are made. "

Since this GOTD says "Trainer", I can assume we can't save the changes to a file= not worth even testing it...

The program insists on doing an online registration check every single time you run it.

Note that this means:

1) The program is unusable if you don't have an Internet connection.

2) The publisher can disable your copy at will.

3) If the publisher goes out of business, the program will become permanently unusable.
