Oddly, the executable identifies itself as version 2.0.0.0. Oversight, or a really old version?

William W. Geertsema, You're are right. The installed EXE is version 2.0.0.0
The Setup is version 3.1:

In many of these GOTDs, a post from the company involved often pops up with a clarification about a contested issue. Where is SoftOrbits' clarification about what they are giving away? If it is the $29,95 version, how long does the license last? Why then do they use the word "trial"? If it is just a copying and pasting error, they should clarify.

I get the daily email of GOTD offers, but infrequently install any. There are too many limited versions, trial versions, discount versions, free versions that you can download any other day from their site, or contests to win a version and not enough truly free giveaways of something useful and lasting (for example a previous version of their $59.95 program but with no tech support),

SoftOrbits has an awful habit of turning a complementary copy of their software into a paid version simply by canceling it's registration at some undetermined time.
This is rarely (if ever) disclosed by Softorbits previous to installation.

Not every piece of software we download and install will be needed right away.
Often times it can be a life saver sometime down the road.
This is where Softorbits had been a MAJOR disappointment in the past.
You go to use it, glad you installed it, only to discover it was trial-ware !!

I find this practice insulting.
My installation and evaluation time has some value & it was wasted.
Finding what I believed to be a complimentary piece of software was a stealth piece of trial-ware is NOT an incentive for me to buy it.
Frankly, It just makes me somewhat angry.

I can preview files with the free trial version? I can't save or recover and store the files ???

sam: I'm not a fan of this developer's work but fair's fair: the "free trial version" of many software offerings is likely to be crippled in one way or another. But GOTD / SoftOrbits is, today, and according to this very same page, making it clear that "The program is available for $29.99, but it will be free for our visitors as a time-limited offer." Why you're querying the performance of a trial version when it's a full version that is today's giveaway is mystifying.

MikeR, This is off-topic-your yesterday detailed comment (Photo Scissors) was excellent and it was hilarious to see complains about missing licenses and unsuccessful activation after reading it.
About today Giveaway,as You I'm not the fan of SoftOrbis, but I noticed some minor improvements-not in performance of their applications, but in their habit to turn full giveaway versions to trial in few weeks.
Performance of Flash Drive Recovery--I saved 100 images (in 3 formats-.jpg .png and few .gif) and 5 articles in simple .txt format on USB 3.0 32Gb flash drive.Than deleted it.With this app I managed to recover 58 images(all in .jpg) and all .txt documents, but only 1 in original form.Other 4 were mostly unreadable. Not so good! I get better result with Mini Tool Power data Recovery!

MikeR, as sam said in fewer words, why does it state in the description "You can preview recovered photos and other documents with the free trial version." Throws into doubt whether this is a full version or the "free trial version", whatever that might be... If it is the full version, why bother to put what the "free trial version" does in the description...? I agree with sam - very confusing!

MinMin: Er, well . . . I'm thinking the reason why the developer's page blurb here mentions the existence of a free trial version is either because (a) the developer wishes to draw everyone's attention to the existence of the, um, free trial version of this product or (b) the developer has goofed up the copying and pasting of its own website text into the aforementioned GOTD blurb, and the reference to the free trial version is unintended.

But hey. I'm not psychic. And the workings of SoftOrbits have long been beyond me, anyway.

perpetummobile, you forgot to mention that it's _also_ free, and not just for today.

perpetummobile: Yep, I did notice those posts yesterday. GOTD's activation advice may yet have to make it even more clear that activating of the brain's ability to read should ideally precede the activating of the brain's ability to control finger clicking.

Good news about SoftOrbits though, so thanks for the heads-up. I firmly believe that the practice of self-destruction is best left to experts like Mr Trump rather than purveyors of software licenses.

MinMin, I just tried to install, and the first thing that happened is that a box popped up for my email address to send a full key to me. Just an educated guess, but it looks like the company is using the opportunity of registration to get more people on their mailing list. I don't personally care if they have mine and maybe I'll find a useful program from them, but some might not want to do this.

OK, installed the program after waiting for the key. No problems after activation. The program installed a couple of shortcuts to my desktop, one of which leads to the SoftOrbits website, showing all their products with a 70 percent discount, but I didn't see anything other than the giveaway of today that I might use. I notice a serious shortcoming in the information though, which is that I have no idea if their licenses are lifetime, annual, or version-based and I think that should be made clear someplace.

Reply   |   Comment by Therese  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

OK, I have to call this deceptive. The promo that pops up is bigger than the box for the program, which is hidden behind the promo. So I thought I wasn't getting the program to open, just a promo. I apologize for the misunderstanding but the rest of you might make the same mistake, so I'll let you all know. I think it might just be for today.

MikeR,

The phrase

"The program is available for $29.99, but it will be free for our visitors as a time-limited offer."

historically refers to the fact that the user has approximately 24 hours to download and install the GOTD, and this is somewhat elaborated upon in the boilerplate language in every download's 'readme' file.

As an experienced user of this site, you of all people should realize that no visitor would read that phrase and reasonably infer that the GOTD has a "shelf life" and that it may suddenly "expire" without prior warning.

As you know, some offers DO have fixed time values stipulated, e.g., 'this offer is for a 1-year license', '...valid for 6 months', 'a 90-day access to our web app', etc., but these terms are almost always stated in advance by the publisher.

I think most users of this site are smart enough to realize that developers give us an app, gratis, because it is usually feature-limited in some way (sometimes just a little, and sometimes a lot) and they hope that we will like it enough, or really want the missing features, that we will part with some of our cash. This is perfectly fair.

However, either passively or actively enabling a "kill switch", so that when a user, perhaps in a jam (and let's remember, some of the software offered here is specialized, only needed under certain circumstances), goes to fire up your program four or five months after they installed it and discovers that it's totally crippled--that's not fair. Nor do I think it's a particularly good way to win over customers.
