It's not bad, it's just that there are better ones - free. I recommend LibreOffice.

Why not use their FreeOffice suite at www.freeoffice.com which is always free and has most the features a home user would want. Or look around and sometimes you can get the Pro version for free though an older version. The 6 month license in the main reason I will not be taking advantage of it. Thanks anyway.

Peter Blaise,
This was first time I only received a readme text file as the only item in a download package which had to be unzipped/extracted.

Yeah, unusual that.

Perhaps they should include a second file:

No complaints about SoftMaker products -- I've bought several version upgrades of their regular office -- but always on sale for around $20. In a note to the developers, their subscription model at $50/year is too close to the best sale pricing for Office 365 Home, which offers an awful lot that SoftMaker frankly cannot match.

Leon Magill, nope
they've only got a word processor, a spread sheet app, a presentations app and a separate pro only visual basic for applications tool for embeding vba macros in your documents they also bundle Mozilla Thunderbird as an email and calendar client

Just sharing this while on the subject of office suites. I have used LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, WPS Office Free(Kingsoft), SSuite Office, and probably some I don't recall. I have settled on Ashampoo Office Free and am very happy with it. I'd recommend anyone who has not tried it to give it a shot.

Thanks for the offer SoftMaker but I have no need for this. And thanks to the GOTD team!

I've got no problem with a 6 month license - this may seem limited, but 6 months is plenty of time to evaluate software and decide if it meets our needs.

However, I loathe subscription models for software - I'd far rather buy the software and have it forever (or as long as current versions of Windows etc support it).

Not sure about the price either, as NX Home doesn't appear to be shown on their website (so is it a cut down version of an existing suite ?).

Anyway, pricing after 6 months can be found here: http://www.softmaker.com/en/softmaker-office-windows

(Standard: £59.99, Professional £89.99 and Universal £5.99 p/mo or £59.90 per year).

Considering how many free alternatives are available, the pricing doesn't seem great.

And with older versions of MS Office available elsewhere, or even a years subscription to Office Home 2018 for £79.99 from the Microsoft Store, the pricing definitely seems steep.

Given the pricing isn't too different from Microsoft, I'd rather see far more information on their website.

Wrong Description:
It is a ABO version (new for Softmaker - but ABOs are meanwhile a well known model with MS Office and other software vendors...)

While this is no bad pricing for a good, small, fast, and reliabel package...
... for private users I would suggest NOT this nor their free Office, but "Softmaker Office 2016 Standard" for free: this is really a deal! - and as good opportunity for testing this good package or even better; to keep it!
"Softmaker Office 2016 Standard" is identical to "Softmaker Office 2016 Pro", beside the NOT integrated "Langenscheidt Wörterbücher" and the "Duden Korrektor" - but the latter is not of interest for most non german writers anyhow?!

Prefer to spend some money on Microsoft Office (not the silly 365 version) that you can use for many years.

Problem is it looks like another subscription piece of software after 6 month and then find it costs a fortune to keep with it. I also dislike subscription software because the things can all soon to add up. Why can't we go back to days of just buying a piece of software? Sadly everything seems to be heading subscription and piles of monthly deductions on the bank statements if you are not cautious.....

How can anyone claim that a product that apparently was released today (I can't find a single description page on the web) is "the No. 1 alternative to Microsoft Office and LibreOffice". Number one on which list and according to which criteria?

JimF,
That is the link to the registration page. Can you explain where is the description of NX Home??? If so please answer these simple questions: what is the difference to version 2018? what happens after the 6 month trial? Please do not assume other people can't read or use a search engine... If you work for Softmaker you need to do better, if you don't let them answer.

Reply   |   Comment by Pedro  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+23)

JimF, that is all: SoftMaker Office for Windows as an inexpensive subscription for 6 months. Always current: All updates and upgrades included for free during your subscription.

Flexible license: Licensed for one household with up to 5 computers, or for 1 commercial user with up to 5 computers. And now it is free!

Reply   |   Comment by Pejo  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Pedro, I am guessing that this NX home version is just a 6-month tryout. I have a license for SoftMaker Office 2016 that I purchased back in - you guessed it - 2016. It is NOT a subscription.

This is a wonderful, Microsoft-Office-compatible suite, and you can use the ribbon UI or, for those of us that hate the ribbon, the classic UI is available. It comes with a Help file that does not require you to open a browser - a real plus IMO - and they have a good forum where more help is readily found. The suite is affordable if you decide to buy a license, and the license lasts forever.

Methinks - someone correct me if I am wrong - that what you would be getting here is a good, long, six month trial.

[ Pedro ],

Actually, that page lists
[ 1 ] Office NX Home,
[ 2 ] Office NX Universal,
[ 3 ] Office Pro,
[ 4 ] Office Standard
... as existing products, their home page lists
[ 5 ] Office 2018,
[ 6 ] Office Universal,
[ 7 ] Office HD,
... a Google search for [ compare ] at their site also lists
[ 8 ] Free Office.
... a Google search for [ +nx ] at their site lists nothing.

NX seems to be subscription only, all others are direct purchase and free is, well, free.

It describes "NX Home" as "Home" and "Commercial", go figure:

"... SoftMaker Office NX as an affordable subscription
New SoftMaker Office NX Home for Windows (yearly subscription)
SoftMaker Office for Windows as an inexpensive yearly subscription.
Always current: All updates and upgrades included for free during your subscription.
Flexible license: Licensed for one household with up to 5 computers,
or for 1 commercial user with up to 5 computers ..."

As others have suggested, I avoid all this noise with free versions from anywhere,
-- free Libre Office,
-- free Oracle Apache Open Office,
-- free Softmaker Free Office,
... and so on.
.

Peter Blaise,
Actually the page is more complete now. When I added the comment (9 hours earlier than yours) there was only one item and no description. This shows that the people at SoftMaker are reading and improving (which is excellent). It also shows that this product was released yesterday and it is already the Number One :)
