SoftOrbits programs have been notorious in the past for deactivating previous giveaways (and sometimes bought programs) when installed: see e.g. https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/soft-orbits-photo-retoucher-4-1/.
It has certainly happened to me, so before completing the installation it would be useful to know whether this still applies.
On the other hand, the program does appear to install on XP, although not officially supported.

I must be doing something wrong as the only program deactivated was an older version of photo retoucher, I feel left out as I have nothing to complain about the company,

Before today, I had downloaded and installed three SoftOrbits programs from GOTD:

1. Photo Editor Pro 3.2 - a giveaway on Oct. 8, 2017
https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/softorbits-photo-editor-3-2/

2. Sketch Drawer Pro 5.1 - a giveaway on Nov. 29, 2017
https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/sketch-drawer-3/

3. Photo Stamp Remover 9.1 - a giveaway on Dec. 21, 2017
https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/photo-stamp-remover-9-1/

Even after downloading, installing, and activating today's SoftOrbits giveaway, Photo Retoucher 4.1, all three of those earlier SoftOrbits programs are still registered versions. All three still work well. And all three can still save the image files that they modify.

Furthermore, I used all four SoftOrbits programs one after another, modifying photos with all four, and saving the results with all four. Using them did not -- repeat, did not -- add hundreds or thousands or even a handful of entries to my computer's registry hives.

Thanks, SoftOrbits and GOTD, for giving away free copies of these programs.

Well you Guys really had me thinking. I have three SoftOrbits giveaways (1 Paid) and I thought they may be toast. I downloaded Photo Retoucher and ran it a couple of times. No problems, My previous downloads are still registered and the photo Retoucher is working fine and my registry is still in fine shape. Must be a miracle...EH !!

It was mentioned that Soft Orbits Photo Retoucher adds a LOT of registry entries -- it's most always mentioned that installing a new Soft Orbits GOTD deactivates other Soft Orbits giveaways that were already installed.

Today's GOTD uses the same registry key as the version I already had installed from last summer, though that key contains a few more values or entries: HKCU\ Software\ softorbits\ SoftOrbitsPhotoRetoucher . Today's GOTD did add a 2nd, empty key: HKCU\ Software\ softorbits\ DigitalPhotoSuite . Aside from Uninstall entries in HKLM (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) that's it as far as important, permanent registry entries go. Once it's installed, running Soft Orbits Photo Retoucher added (11) files to the Internet Explorer cache for "activate" & "promos" -- no permanent registry changes were recorded.

Now when I say permanent keys, this is what I'm talking about... Windows adds registry values as part of its normal operations, & also whenever you install &/or run software. Some of those are for things like search indexing & application compatibility, & they'll stick around. There are often lots of more-or-less cache entries, e.g. HKCR\ Local Settings\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Shell\ BagMRU... MRU means Most Recently Used. And *Sometimes* when installing software in Vista & later versions of Windows, you'll get Component &/or Schema registry keys & values that appear to be temporary -- if you record changes to the registry they're recorded as new additions, but if you open Regedit, you will not be able to find those keys &/or values.

Installing today's GOTD, Soft Orbits Photo Retoucher, I recorded a total of "202858 registry entries added", but most all of that was Component keys/values, and so has no effect on the registry used when starting & running Windows.

If you're concerned about a Soft Orbits software installation deactivating previously installed Soft Orbits software you can set a restore point beforehand, or navigate to HKCU\ Software\ softorbits in Regedit & export that key to a file. You can later double click it to merge it with the registry, restoring everything under that key, or right click the file & select edit, deleting the Photo Retoucher key if it's there, closing/saving the file, then merging it with the registry, so that the new version is activated. From what I recorded however you shouldn't have to bother.

[If you're still curious about those Component entries, read on...
If you check the C:\Windows\ System32\ Config\ folder you'll see that some files named Components have been updated. The file named Components [no filename extension] is another registry file [hive] that isn't normally visible in Regedit, because it mainly has to do with Windows internal workings and Windows Update. In the win7 32 bit VM where I tested installation, the before & after [installing Photo Retoucher] sizes for Component were Exactly the same -- the plain text file with the majority of the 200k entries is 57 MB. The recorded new Component registry entries themselves seem to be the result of a system scan for its current state, & I suspect they're recorded as new entries because the Component registry wasn't loaded when the recording app [InstallWatch Pro] took it's before snapshot. Since the Component hive isn't normally loaded [you have to manually load it in Regedit], I don't see a way to include it in the before snapshot of InstallWatch Pro or Regshot to be able to test this theory.

I don't know what triggers this scan or update of the Component hive -- it happens during some installs & not others... perhaps it's related to a check for the proper versions of something like the C/C++ runtimes in the WinSxS folder, which has close ties [links] to the Component hive? One way to avoid it might be to use something like TimeFreeze or Shadow Defender, or a VM, install whatever software, copy what you need to, restore everything, then add the files, folders, & registry entries you copied. A final note, don't mess with the Component hive just because you're curious -- its not as forgiving as the rest of the registry.]

Yes, very good software but NOT at the cost of messing with my registry. I have stopped (and I suggest you do also) using all Softorbits software until they acknowledge, apologize for and correct this practice.

Tell them your opinion here.

CAN SOFTORBIT please respond to the allegation:
"Every time a Soft Orbits offering appears, somebody warns about their habit of deregistering existing software (i.e another Soft Orbits package that was working fine suddenly becomes a trial installation). I have certainly been caught out this way, and I now avoid them."?

Reply   |   Comment by drvajra  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+54)

drvajra, deregistering (unregistering) turning into trial software it is the least problem. Now, check your windows registries, you will find hundreds if not thousands of entries every time you run their software.
I guess they use the registries hives as a scratch pad to register your key strokes, log everything you do
and I suspect they send all that info to home base.
I stop installing their software years ago.

berry,

Will uninstalling the Photo retoucher prevent such problems?

Reply   |   Comment by drvajra  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+6)

I encountered the deregistering issue of previously working Soft Orbits problems each time I installed one of their new programs in years past. I got tired of losing my old working programs, so I started ignoring all Soft Orbits programs in early 2017, IIRC. I'm not going to try them again until I see massive proof from numerous users they have changed their ways. Better safe than sorry.

drvajra,

One would think that if the publisher's creditably was being questioned, they would immediately respond to ease user's minds. Their silence speaks volumes. Either the accusations are true or they do not care about the user. Either scenario does not fill me with confidence to try their products. I will pass until they speak up and clear the air.

Every time a Soft Orbits offering appears, somebody warns about their habit of deregistering existing software (i.e another Soft Orbits package that was working fine suddenly becomes a trial installation). I have certainly been caught out this way, and I now avoid them.

If anyone can reassure me that they have stopped this disgraceful habit, I will happily give them another go.

If not, proceed at your own risk!

Bewary,
Thanks, I thought it was just me. I have experienced deregistration with every Soft Orbits giveaway app. I have tried. Won't waste my time.

Reply   |   Comment by rwjack  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+46)

Bewary, Of course it is totally unethical and wrong, and for this reason, even having just downloaded the package, I will not now install it. But I wonder if they are the only company doing this sort of thing here?

At least twice in recent times I have found a programme which came via GOTD had "magically" changed into a TRIAL -- yet it had been properly registered at the time.

Of course, it is certainly possible that MicroSoft was there -- it's "Creator" update was certainly responsible for virtually bricking my computer -- which is now vastly different from what it was two weeks ago.

The point is, I don't KNOW for sure. Until this discussion, I had blamed myself, or MS. To learn that at least one software developer would purposely de-register one of their (earlier) programmes makes me extremely suspicious and leary, and not only about them....

Why doesn't GOTD insist to those developers whose work appears in these pages that that is a no-no, and ban them from appearing here again unless they agree NOT to engage in such nefarious practices??

Otherwise "caveat emptor" will become "caveat receptaculum".

Hi, last time Soft Orbits Photo Retoucher was offered here (v.4.0, on July 20 2017)
https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/soft-orbits-photo-retoucher-4-0/
- one of our regular Users wrote on the day this:

'#12 They claimed here:

(link to GOTD Stamp Remover by Soft Orbits)

that the problem of deactivation was fixed. Yet, still many posters questioned their practices then, and continue to do so till this day, because SoftOrbits' statement proved to be untrue.

I do not trust this developer, and will not bother to download any of their software.

Dont bother,
Although i have no ides about my info I have this product from the last Giveaway ver 8.1 and it's still activated.

SoftOrbits,
No it wasn't !
I've installed it on a computer, a laptop and a notebook. Win 7 and Win 10. On each device i opened the program first to see which version I had and all three notified me of an update, when I chose not to update the program closed.
So that leaves two choices, bad programming, or done by design to get the user to buy the program. Bad news whichever it is.

SoftOrbits,
Would you kindly specify, since when exactly? And what do you mean by a "long time ago"?
How many weeks ago?

consuella,
The same.
i opened the program first to see which version I had and it said UNREGISTERED, when I chose not to REGISTER the program closed.

consuella: A reasonable question, a reasonable answer to which would go some way to restoring this developer's credibility. Inexplicably, it's still featuring images on its website which cannot be genuine before / after examples: as it acknowledges, its software majors on proximity pixel substitution -- so the conjuring up of blue stonework from non-existent pixels in the buildings example can only be alchemy, not algorithm.

Simple question - Does this PROBLEM still EXIST??
I realize how boring this looks by now, but it's important to know once and for all, so people feel safe and confidant to install this and future Giveaways from this Vendor!!
