The score can be edited in a built-in editor. Sloud UB Composer is a veritable musical instrument containing a great selection of musical timbres. For instance, when singing a tune into a microphone you can simultaneously hear it blown by the trumpet or the sax, performed by the electric guitar or even beaten by drums!

Sloud UB Composer "feels", recognizes and then plays back all the nuances of voice motion, all the mistakes and false notes. User can also edit notes of recognized MIDI melody.

As a composer, it sounded good but couldn't get it to work at all.

The buttons and readout are all out of line on mine and it's nearly impossible to tell what I'm doing.
But hey, it's free and I should be and am very grateful. :-)

TS-AudioToMidi, free or shareware, are both very good. I just d/led them and compared with this Sloud program. Sloud output is cacophonous, unrecognizable. TS-AudioToMidi WORKS! Both versions work well, read the help file and just play. I know little about audio and got the oscar meyer wiener song converted in about 5 minutes. Little kid from TV commercial input, bassoon output. Don't laugh. I like it. Shareware has a few more bells and whistles (literally) is all. See TK, #68 for info and links.

Also, shareware site has midi-to-wav and editing programs/links as requested by several folks above.

The big problem with this software is it doesn't accurately do what it claims: it cannot accurately convert the voice to midi. I carefully read all the instructions onsite, and made sure I didn't use words or 'la-la's', and then aahed and doo-dooed my way through Jingle Bells. The midi playback was almost completely unrecognisable, and I know my pitching isn't that bad, especially for a simple song like Jingle Bells. I also tried using both Play Midi Notes and Play Raw Notes buttons for playback. Play Raw Notes got the worst result.

This is the kind of software I would have loved for music composition in a sequencer, but my experience with Sloud makes me believe that it will not be helpful at all for doing this.

The idea for this software is very cool. If it is refined to be reliable under normal conditions I would love to see it here again. As it is now, I have to input and edit, and it is like first generation speech recognition programs, not close enough in understanding what I want to be truly useful. But, as always, thanks GoTD and developers! I really do hope to see a more accurate version of this software some day.

#18. Thanks so much for the recommended freeware. I have been looking for something like this for the past few years.

#42. Thanks for the 15 minute review. I have to agree with you 100% percent.

I downloaded and installed the program hoping that I can convert some songs into MIDI file. Let me confirm here that it does not work. I understand that vocal sound in the WAV file will not convert, but I was trying to convert the beginning of a song which was piano solo and it came out crappy. This program fails to recognize the correctly note and let me tell you, it is not even close!! Therefore, I couldn't even try to edit the piece of junk after the conversion.

If you just want some fun tool to record your voice through mic for a good laugh, enjoy. If you are serious about music, this software may get you steaming in no time, because it will turn your favorite tunes into absolute garbage.

Haven't had any luck yet.

But my bet goes for singing out loud and like screaming (at a higher pitch). I know that it is impossible to callibrate the program to any voice registry. So, perhaps, a standard would be between a child-girl voice and a screaming one...

For those that couldn't even start the application, consider that Windows Media Player 11 library, used by most programmers that create sound programs for windows, is said to bring a lot of trouble.

I had fun playing with this program. It has potential for those times when you are having trouble replicating a tune that is in your head. This software seems pretty finicky about the notes it will recognize. I found I had better luck in a higher register than my usual vocal range. I would like the ability to capture percussive sounds (Boom Chica Chica Boom Chica Chica Boom Chica Chica)I think this will be usefull for me to get the basic tune captured, and then edit it in another program like cakewalk or if you prefer freeware, anvil studio. Additionally, I'll probably get better at fine tuning my vocals, which will give me better pitch and make me a better singer as a whole.
While this program will not replace any of my existing programs, it will make a nice addition to my arsenal of tools for composing music. Thanks Giveaway of the day!

This is a great program to use. I have lots of song that don't have MIDI's to use for converting into Sheet Music.
Now that I have this in my arsenal, I can use it to convert MP3's into Waves, and then into MIDI.
There is only one free program that converts Wav into Midi, but it didn't work as I wanted it to.
But I really hope this works.

I loaded this program on two different computers; an 1800mhz and a 766mHz speed. The 766 did not seem to have the speed to properly convert the notes and it slurred. the 1800 seemed to do pretty well over all. So, if you have a slower processor, you might experience worse results. Otherwise, it is a matter of learning what vocal attack reproduces well with the voices you use. It seems to take a little practice, but this is definitely more entertaining than a screensaver. Thanks Gaotd.

Ok... wanted to post again having tried this program. definately 10 thumbs up :*)~
This would be fun for the kids to play with, and excellent for musicians. Takes a bit of work for a beginner to use... It is a very sensitive program when it comes to the input of sounds. But if a person babies it- it works great for the composer. thanx again...
Also, if you are the software developer and are reading this-> great program! In the edit screen it would be nice to be able to highlight areas with the mouse and to repeat selected areas while editing. Also, the edit section is a nicer view of whats goin on. it would be nice to record in that area too. Goodluck, and thanx again.

Hmmm... This sounds very interesting. My life revolves around creating music and i have an arsenal of stuff i Use. I am very surprised to see somethin like this on here. Hey guys-> do you know how much time something like this would save people that transcribe their music. I had to read it again because i thought it converted WAV-> to MID... Meaning "to create new midi sounds from wavs". But still... cause it does something way better then that!!!
Something like this could take alittle hymm that is sung, and provide a score with actual notes... that could be used with anumber of sequencers, or even taken from there and played on an actual instrument ! WOW
WOW!!!
I hope my computer is fast enough for this guy... 1.7 mghz
probably is...
thanx so much for this one, and i am very glad i don't miss a single day of visitng here!!! :*)~

As for the sloud ub composer, I do like the program. It is easy to use and works well, I cannot wait until I use it with my musical projects. However, for the first time, my antivirus package detected the activation mode after installing as "Potentially unwanted software in my system". I scanned the setup and quick scanned my machine, and found nothing. This was a bit confusing! (could be something in my system only, so ya'll don't panic!).

I am going to play with the composer later tonight, and will comment again if any thing else arises.

I think the concept of this program is original and fun. But as a lot of other people here, I dont get a tune that matches even in a distance my singing. I use a laptop, so maybe this is because of the not so great quality of the build-in soundcard in my laptop. Im wondering, does someone who actually got a reasonably good sound, have a (semi)professional soundcard in his pc?

Thanks anyway GOTD!

Ok I got it to work. The problem was windows media player 11. WTF is up with windows media player 11. I had it set for "work offline" mode and it caused the error!!! That would have taken me forever to figure out if it wasn't for the fact that I installed it yesterday and I had no issues before yesterday. MS are a bunch of idiots, how can one application's settings affect a completely different application. There must be a global setting some library is checking. If you get that "Activation module failed to connect" message, check any app (especially MS apps) that have an "offline" mode, it is probably causing it.

I am certain there isn't a firewall problem (it is off at the moment). Is there some problem with the activation server?

To number fifteen:

After searching for about four minutes, I found this program which claims to be a midi converter. while it is not freeware it nevertheless seems to be what you said you were looking for. Just in case it interest you, or anyone else interested in a Audio to midi converter I thought I would post it here. it claims that "In off-line mode Audio To MIDI creates MIDI sequences from input files (like mp3s or audio CD tracks). This gives you numerous possibilities: In real-time mode Audio To MIDI instantly converts music coming through microphone or line input of your computer into a MIDI sequence. Think of this mode as a powerful music processor, which allows some non-MIDI instrument (like a guitar) to sound as a violin or a piano or whatever instrument you've got in your MIDI synthesizer."

http://www.mp3towav.org/TS-AudioToMIDI/

According to their web site you can download a free trial version or purchase it for $34.99 Which is $15.00 cheaper than this software. but nevertheless far more than I would pay for anything of the sort.

Considering that this very task is the subject of deep research at various universities right now (and is considered to be quite difficult), I'd be surprised if this product was more than a toy. That doesn't mean it's not possible, just that I'm dubious. Given that I am also in a couple of different bands, however, I'll definitely be giving this a closer look.

I have the same problem as #23(Jacati) and #27 (BoRegard), and it is frustrating the hell out of me. Cannot convert wav files to midi, using this Stroud product, but no problem when using the microphone. I'll repeat what BoRegard said:

"I can’t convert any recorded wav to midi. It will convert my voice to midi, but same song recorded with default sound recorder (XP) -> no response….

If anyone has solved this, or if Sloud Inc. has the answer, please tell us."

Thanking you in advance to any GOTD'er who can shed some light on this...

according to the download page, it has been removed!!!!
i AM a musician, the reason it is hard to track folks voices is because of the incredibly complex harmonics in our voices...feed them a simpler sound,.,,,say a guitar, or flute, or piano, and they track MUCH better..
really bumming i missed this...
some of the music to midi programs out there are quite good as long as they don;t deal with polyphony.
hope the link gets fixed before too late!
peace ya'll

Nice! I had a trial version of this before. I had a film project in which I needed to convert some voices and instruments, and I was very sorry when the trial ran out.

It is not quite as polished as I would like to see, and it takes some finesse to make it work the way you wish.

It is very sensitive to the volume being too high, and with most microphones it will pick up background sounds and convert them, too. So, bring up the IN mixer and play with that while making a sample. Make certain that you are in a very quiet environment; tv or radio in the background will be converted and make a mashed up sound.

Sometimes I wish that one could vote for these with better than thumbs up/down, as I would give this an 8 of 10. But since that is over 5, I vote thumbs up.

If anyone is having problems, take some time to get the finesse to make it work for you. There IS a learning curve with this one. If you are getting file problems, then there is something wrong with either the way you installed it or your system.

Also, try changing the options to see your sound card driver instead of "auto". Also, uncheck the note recognition setting so short tones are NOT merged.

The Set Default means to save your settings as default, which you have to do or they revert as soon as you close the Settings dialog.

Installed on Win XP Pro on custom built machine with Dolby 7 and it works just fine.

It's
A, Useful, and can be a huge time saver as singing random notes before composure is much easier than playing it manually or composing which saves a huge amount of time. I was using Mid2wav but it was very old and worked... just.

B, Actually quite fun! Like singstar almost but you can export the midis. I'll certainly be loading this up at parties!

Full version.... it works standalone with no regcodes or registry glut.

I was so excited about this software (thought it would help get my Eurovision song entry underway for next year....................) but unfortunately it does not work as it should. Here's why.........

Although the program downloaded and installed seamlessly and has a gorgeous stainless steel look interface with comprehensive and user-friendly controls, the program itself does not do what it should. I can sing into the mic and get a playback in my chosen instrument on the first go, after that if I want to do another, the program will go haywire and start a terrible screeching/ warbling sound as it shows the coloured waves of sound that just aren't there - the room is silent. To stop this I have to exit and re-enter the program when it will do the same thing on my second attempt. I have uninstalled and reinstalled but this fault is still there.

Also! The program sadly does not pick up correct notes at all. I sang "Fame" (........) into the mic and it came out as random nonsense, unrecognisable as the tune I had sung, a couple of notes here and there being correct. This is genuinely not my singing being bad!! I can sing but the program did not convert it correctly at all.

#13 Made me laugh out loud

Ever wonder what you would sound like if you were a flute?
sums this up so well, I initially thought you sang and an orchestra immediately composed the score that played as an accompaniment to your voice. Not so. Your voice is deleted and ONE instrument (albeit of your choice) plays "what" you sang - although in reality it does not actually do this as it plays back totally different notes to your input.

On paper this looks like a fabulous program and it would be if it did what it claims to. Unfortunately it does not and the output is absolutely unrecognisable to what you sing into the mic, added to that the fault that makes the screeching/ warbling noise on each second attempt until you exit and restart the program. You can alter the notes yourself after recording which is good but you might as well do this from the start to save time rather than singing.

The best software I have come across to professionally record your voice for as little as $5 is the "Hit Kit" that adds orchestra to your voice, professionally altering flat notes etc - have a look at it here, I bought one as a gift for a friend who is a professional singer once and she swears by it.

This is a great piece of fun software. I called my OH (who claims to be able to sing) to recite a song into the microphone, then we played it back in MIDI format, constantly changing the instruments from piano to guitar to bagpipes to tubular bells, etc. We laughed until the tears rolled down our cheeks. This is terrific for humiliating wannabe singers. Usefulness? About 1 out of 10. Fun factor? About 7 out of 10. Thanks GOTD and Sloud UB.

Well, you actually can convert from a recorded file (wav or any other format for that matter) to midi, after a fashion....

Just play whatever file you want to convert and hold the mic up to the speaker.... while recording with this program.

If you thought the quality of the conversion was wanting when you recorded directly from the mic, wait until you get a ear-load doing it this way, especially if your instrument of choice is the bagpipe or tinkle bell.

However, I expect the results are really quite appealing to a limited but ardent audience when recording to "breath noise", and equally appealing to perhaps much the same audience when recorded to "gunshot".

Try it, it's hilarious.

I've been looking for something like this for a long time, so I was very happy to see it here.

Installed and run without a glitch.
But that's about all that went without problems - they keep piling one on another:

1. The settings didn't work well: I changed the instrument to piano and it worked for the recorded clip. But for a new recording it kept switching back to flute (not in the list of instruments though - piano was still selected there, but MIDI playback was flute).

2. Program didn't like my (deep) voice at all. Just kept guessing the wrong notes, so the melody playback didn't sound as melody at all, just as bunch of random notes. Whistling instead of singing yielded somewhat better results (still not too good).

3. The worst problem (and this is a real show-stopper) was that after maybe a ten recordings, it thoroughly crashed the SoundMAX driver, when I stopped the recording. After that the application hung and I wasn't being able to kill it (neither with Task manager, nor with SysInternals Process Explorer). The setting window remained on top when I switched to other applications and I couldn't get rid of it.

Since the sound driver crashed, no other sound program worked anymore either, of course (even the volume settings hung instead of opening the volume dialog window).

Worst of all was that I couldn't shutdown the PC in a normal way, since it couldn't unload the application, so the shutdown process hung half-way as well.

Had to use the cold-reset button, which I haven't done in ages. And sure enough, when I reboted and ran chkdsk, there were lost files and improperly freed clusters.

Dunno if that problem is general or specific to SoundMAX audio controller, that my ASUS 5PB motherboard uses.

Anyway, if you use the SoundMAX chip, I wouldn't recommend using this program on your primary PC, unless you have a burning desire to use some recovery procedures afterwards...
