No problem! Run a current free OS and run programs like this under a wine (possibly xen too; use the stock ones from distros or add them in as you like) environment. The IE7 requirement is odd....but there's no excuse for running any other IE on a machine that's not behind a very solid corporate firewall.

This is recognizably a clone or development on an old artificial life game...whose name escapes me (Grendels and Norns were some of the races in it), but The Sims of course has taken over.

Hi everyone, I'm one of the developers of SilkWood and I'd like to take this time to answer some of your questions with the following points.

1)It appears that the GOTD install wrapper has corrupted our file. We recommend that you download the demo directly from our site at www.reflectivelayer.com.

2)The game IS available more Mac and Windows(Check out our website). For some reason only the Windows version was posted on GOTD.

3)SilkWood is not an action game. It's design to be "played" in the background while you do other work. From time to time you'd check on your Elder to see how he's doing.

4)The weather is an integral part of the game as it affects the body temperature of the Elder. We went with IE7+ because IE6 does not support standard transparency for PNG files.

5)There's an online help in the game if you need detail info. Click on the first Icon on the right then click on the help button.

If you have additional questions just use our contact form on our site at www.reflectivelayer.com

Thanks

Thanks so much #102 & #106, Robin. I had exact same problems, and you found how to open it in the browser. Now I'll try setting it as desktop wallpaper. Omg, it's running all over the place! BTW, I have Windows XP.

Why not instead manage life, think about intelligence, efficiency etc. of the real "Elder": yourself!?
Nothing beats graphics & hardware requirements of that :)

I downloaded both free programs but when I tried to run setup, the authentication failed as the server wasn't responding. It's a shame really as I was looking forward to playing that.

#111....The reason it skips part of the game is because it is running in real time. If you are going out at noon, and leave the PC on, then come home at 6pm, your Elder will have done everything he was scheduled to do for that 6 hour period. If you were to shut down your PC at noon, then turn it on again at 6pm, you will have the same results. Even though the program was off for 6 hours, it will appear as though your Elder did everything he was scheduled to do for those 6 hours.

In case you would like to know, the "Mission Time" showing at the bottom right of the window is the actual amount of time that you have had the game running.

Anyone noticed how watching TV makes the Elder's intelligence drop? This would seem hard to avoid, as he watches TV while he eats. However, you can do a little something about this. When he is watching the TV, click on the TV screen with your mouse. The channel will change, and he will start excercising (or dancing) to some music coming from the new channel. This will help his efficiency number go up, and his intelligence won't drop as quickly as when he is watching the other channel (no doubt it is reruns of "Dukes of Hazzard"). -Dan

I'm finding my system has crashed three times today! I've not installe anything else recently so I suspect Elder #6 is probably the culprit :o(

A pity because I'm quite fond of the game!

Anyone else having this problem or have a solution?

Same story as most everyone else. Upon initial attempt to install, setup ceased with corrupted undergroundF.png file error.
I deleted everything but that file and its folder and ran setup second time with no problem.
Can only theorize that an error occurred during compilation or zipping of the setup file and then setup wasn't tested before being uploaded to Wikisend.com
My initial perception of this program is that it's a somewhat interesting, virtual pet-like sim. Unfortunately, my "elder" developed dyspepsia within a few hours of activity and had to be hospitalized for awhile.
I'm going to reserve my decision whether or not to uninstall this for several days.
(If I don't cause the little fella to croak first...lollol.)
Regardless, I had to give this a thumbs down due to the corrupted setup file. There's just no good excuse for such errors making it to the primary download master files. Don't you agree?

Now that we only get games on the weekend I seldom stop here anymore as I was coming here daily. I completely forgot about Saturday until very late in the day Sunday. Matter of fact it's now 1:15 AM. East coast time and it's my first time in here for the weekend.
Looks like I did not miss anything from what I have been reading.
I can't help but start to wonder if this site is dying out ? I really am starting to get a bad feeling about the direction this site is heading.
I'm not complaining about any of the software I have got in the past. Matter of fact I am truly greatfull. I just can't help but think of how many people will fade away as I did by accident on the count of games on weekends only.
I still say yous should of been giving away a game on Wednesdays to help offset this situation. At least people would be here at mid week looking for a game even if it was only a repeat.
My own opinion here but I think you guys are kind of shooting yourself in the foot.
Yous may or may not be seeing a big decrease in site hits but, trust me, it's gonna happen alot sooner rather then later.
Despite my being almost a complete miss for the weekend, looks like I didn't miss anything.
Hope to be back in another week if I can remember you guys.

sorry for second post. But I was messing around in the folder in my C:/program files/silkwood1.5/ and double clicked the
C:\Program Files\SilKwood 1.5\silk_code.htm

and guess what no more scripting errors, music and all things working fine. It opens in my web browser instead of small window on the desktop and works just fine.
This is the file that was missing or I had scripting errors with to begin with when clicking on my shortcut on the desktop. Hope this made sense to you all and helps others. I sometimes do not explain very well. Sorry if it sounds confusing but it works now!! :)

Oh and using Vista Home edition.
Have a great day all.
Thanks again GAOTD

Crap, I hit the wrong key. Moving on...

I wouldn't mind having the game in my taskbar or down in the system tray and the minimized window doesn't always stay there when swtiching between tasks, but thankfully it's not lost forever. So far, that's the only fault I can find with the game. The faulty installer is another matter, but it's not a hurdle you can't get past.

Hopefully I've set up a schedule that works and will allow me to progress through whatever the story may be. If not, I'll make the changes I need. No need to micro-manage or keep focused on the game all the time. I don't really mind though. The game will keep up while I do other stuff. Hopefully.

As for the Mac version comment, the Reflective Layer site does offer a Mac version as well. GOTD might want to consider offering Silkwood again for the Mac users out there (since they've toyed with the idea of having Mac downloads too) and maybe a repeat of the Windows version at the same time with the installer issue fixed.

Downloaded and installed. Like most, I had to run setup.exe a second time for the installation to be completed. I'm not afraid to use IE, nor am I allergic to all things Microsoft. I had no warning windows pop up when I installed or ran the game. I'll be running my adware/spyware scanners a little later and see if anything turns up.

I don't find the window to be that small. I currently run my monitor at a resolution of 1280 x 1024 and the window of Wilkwood I can see what's going on if I care to check out what Elder #6 is up to.

Hi Everyone . I have Vista on our pc where I installed this game and at the very end of the installation got this error message :

unpacking Error: corrupted setup file!
Installing Silkwood1.5

I did receive the activation page saying the game had been activated. After reading through some of the comments here to see what everyone was doing about this error message. I also did not get the shortcut on my desktop after the 1st attempt of installing. I had to re run the setup for a second time. Now I have the icon (shortcut) on the desktop for starting the game.

Now after I clicked on the shortcut on my desktop I got yet another error here it is below:

an error has occurred in the script on this page.
line:1253
Char:5
Error: Object doesn't support this property or method.
Code:0
URL: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Silkwood%201.5/silk_code.htm

do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
yes or no

I did run the game and it seems to run fine until I went into save a few things on the setup icon and it gave me another scripting error if anyone wants a copy of that error I am sure I can reproduce it for you. :) Please let me know if there might be a fix for all these problems. Thanks for the software GAOTD.I still do appreciate your site very much this is not a complaint but merly a concern and hoping for a fix of some sort or maybe another download to patch these up? Just curious
Thanks for letting me say my 2cents worth.

Hey. I had the same problem with the installation telling me that the setup was corrupt. I just went through and did the install again (without uninstalling) and the installation finished with no errors. On top of that, the program icon is on the desktop now and it works just fine in running.

So, if you get the error about the setup being corrupt, just re-run the setup immediately. It should finish and the program icon will appear on the desktop.

I had the same problem with the setup error, but I just ran Setup again and it completed. It puts an icon on the desktop, but also in the Startup menu (so you will not have to restart it unless you kill it with C-A-D or Process Explorer). I installed after 9:30pm. As his stomach is only 24% full on starting, I temporarily set him to gather berries til 10 then eat. He is eating (and watching TV) right now. After dinner, I set him to gather berries again til midnight because I don't know how much he eats for an hour! Every gathering is 50 grams of berries then when they go into the silo, they turn into 2 ml each. The silo max is 400 ml.

This is a cool game, not for the action lovers though. I am looking forward to learning more about the storyline!

Thanks GAOTD!

Not sure if this has been answered already but the exe file for this game is a .hta file which is an html file which runs as an executable. Look for C:\Program Files\SilKwood 1.5\silk.hta. Hope this helps. Cool little game. My guys just having some lunch and watching the tv.

I like this game. It's slow but very cute. Just set the tasks for your little character and watch him carry them out in real time. It's not resource hungry and I find I can easily do other things while he is working away. Runs in a chromeless browser window. Uses html, javascript and flash as well as xml files and tons of png files for the animations. When I'm using another program at the same time I find I have to minimise the other program windows rather than use my Show Desktop icon to have the game come to the front. Otherwise it just isn't visible (at the front of the other windows) but restoring and minimising another window makes it come to the front again. Install problem occurred as for other people but I reinstalled as #82 said and it works like a dream. Shame it's had so many bad reviews.

I use Windows Vista, (came with the Christmas computer) :( and yes, I did get the corrupted setup file message, no desktop icon and no folder the first time, although it did say the game was activated! Anyway, I clicked setup again and almost instantly it gave me a popup message that the program was installed successfully and lo & behold there it was, icon, folder and all. Froze the first time I tried to play with it, had to use task manager to shut it down, but then after opening it again, it seems to work perfectly. I set the location, set the schedule, clicked Save and Autosave and the little critter is doing what he is supposed to. Sorry, had to laugh when I read the comment above about the little guy jumping up from watching TV to do what he was supposed to, does that sound like a human attribute or what? If the whole game goes that way, it will definately be amusing! Thanks, GAOTD!

I forgot to mention in my review (#41) that I used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall this program. When the uninstall of the program finished, it had some small error with that as well, even though it had successfully uninstalled, or seemed to.

Also, when Revo brough up the list of leftover files in the registry, I was floored there were over 2,000 files there leftover by this one program. I have never had anywhere near that many leftover files in the registry from any program before.

I just thought you guys might like to know this.

This is an update to my previous comment (#11). Before going to bed last night, I scheduled the Alien's routine for the next 24hrs, then completely shut down my PC. Upon turning the PC on today, the program started up with no problem.

I found that he was doing exactly was he was supposed to be doing at that hour. And judging by his health chart, it appears that he had done everything he was supposed to before I got up, as he is an earlier riser than me!

I noticed a comment or two on here about the small screen size for the game, with one person complaining that you can't enlarge it to full screen, Personally, I can't imagine why a person would want to. I believe there is a reason for the small screen size; you can have the game showing while you do something else on your PC, glancing at it occasionally to see what is happening.

As far as the comment about the re-scheduling not working; just click the green check mark after making any schedule changes. In addition, make sure that "auto save" is checked in the setup screen. When I discovered this morning that I needed to make the alien eat more often (his stomach was only 8.8% full), I immediately re-scheduled the following hour to be his next meal. I checked a bit later, and he indeed was eating, WHILE watching TV, which he must have chosen to do on his own.

After getting past the initial error window by re-installing, I have had absolutely NO problem with this game, and it has worked exactly as it was intended. I am using Vista Home Basic, and this program is running perfectly on it.

This program is more of an "experience" than a game. You can no more speed up the time in this game than you can in your own life, and I find there is really nothing wrong with that. I love games like RollerCoaster Tycoon or Sim City 4, where you can go through 10 years in a mere fraction of the real time. But that doesn't mean that EVERY game needs to be that way. This game will be a pleasant diversion, generally running in the background. And if you don't want it always running, just click the "X" on the screen and turn it off. As I stated above, when you turn it back on, the program will look as though he has done everything he was supposed to do, even though the game was off.

People who don't like this type of game will not be swayed by it. However, if you are the type of person who would enjoy a slow little Sim, then you will not be disappointed. -Dan

If I wanted IE-7 I would have d/l it from MicroSoft and not be nagged anymore by IE-7. Tried it beta and a couple times since. Not for me ! I use Opera & Firefox as well. All are better than IE-7, IMHO !
82.9 Mb. for this game?!! The description & comments re-enforce that this is a game that has no appeal for me to even try it. It is not what I would call a "Casual" game as the discription calls it.
**Soapbox Alert**
Two weekends = 4 days. Four days x 2 games each day = 8 game giveaways. Eight disapointments in my opinion. I prefer single player, mature casual game play that aren't such memory hogs. When there were daily game offers, don't recall going 8 days without something I would be interested in d/l and trying. When I anticipate all week, I am disapointed much more. No problem that many have newer, larger memory, high-end computers. More varied interests can & should find games of interest as in the past. It's GOTD business to run any way they see fit.
Thanks for letting me vent.
I'll check out the forum now. There's almost always something of interest there ! 8-)

whoever made this game probably put a lot of effort into it, but I think they rushed through the other parts like installation of the game. Its probably frustrating to have to go through so many tests on a game, so its not hard to believe they weren't as focused when creating the installation.

Interesting game, to control a farm and the elders, program to rise early have breakfast, then maintain the farm, and keep the elder from starving,
well i noted Brian Zachary found the elder watching TV when he was supposed to be collecting berries, thanks Brian i am going to be on the elders back,i am going to cut back on his tv time, and if i look in on him and find him dossing well i will give him a good work out! hell does he snore, maybe if i tire him out he wont snore! dont feel sorry for him, he looks cute, yea so lay it on him. Oh it took 15mins to download using Mozilla firefox 2013 at 99 to 104 KB/sec, a small glitch in the download (corrupted) incomplete, if you get this just open the file from your download manager again and it will replace the first file then place the icon on your desktop, or where ever you tend to do so,might i suggest to some people to upgrade your download manager, and compressed zipped folders wizard, ensure your Firewall allows the game to open and check your anti virus HIPS ( Host Based Intrusion Prevention System ) is set to allow or ask permission, I know i had a glitch but so many of you are having trouble which appears to be inferior equipment or programs not performing, i am sure at 63 years of age you might pick up your ears? and think well he could be correct.

First of all thank you for the game today GOTD. Then secondly I would also like to include that i am NOT complaining just asking a question. Like many of you I also had trouble downloading the game, but finally got it activated and loaded and I'm glad because it looks interesting to me. I also aways like to read all the directions which included the on line ones before i start a game. This is my question is this a DEMO and not a full game. Or have I misunderstood the online information. I thought when we get games they are suppose to be the full game. If it is just a demo that is fine too, but it should be stated. Now i don't know if parts of the game don't work because it a demo or if it is something else. One other thing Yes i made sure that it WAS activated. HELP, please advise??????

The poor setup routine seems to have put people off this one.
What seems to work is hitting setup again after the first incomplete install (don't delete anything) and it finfishes properly.

Don't expect a whizz-bang game - it's so far from that. I've travelled through farmland PA and real life is as s-l-o-w as this program. Apols to PA folks - LOL from the UK.

What this is, is a real-time simple exercise in guiding a figure with choices of sleep, feed, exercise, reading etc, etc and then from time-to-time dipping in to monitor the effects of these choices.

OK the interface could be better, eg, being able to see his vital stats at the same time as the view of the Elder but it is engrossing in a weird way.....
