Well .. I guess I will be uninstalling this program. I downloaded it on the day of the offering onto my Vista machine. I ran setup and activate as administrator prior to running the program. I didn't have time to go into it until today and now I'm finding out it is in TRIAL mode and tells me I have 13 days left. Too bad though, I thought it was a handy program to have.

Sorry! When I tried to do the Setup it asked me to change the Display settings at the Control Panel into 32 bit and I have only 16 or 24. I know I know, its time to upgrade my PC system after some 8 odd years on XP and with just 720 MB RAM I was a happy camper but its getting now rather problematic. Every little 6 MB app. gives me headaches to install.
Sorry Alex Ferri, sorry me, would've liked to have this little devil....

Have tried to install several times on my XP SP3. At the end of installation, I get an error message that says "ScreenCamera driver is not currently installed! Run ScreenCamera installer to install the driver". The program will open but will not record.
I uninstalled and went in and changed my settings to auto accept all driver installation attempts. This didn't help--same result.
Any ideas? I'd like to get this software--would be pretty useful to me.

I have been looking for a program to just this for months. I wondered if it was possible to even use your active desktop as a webcam. AWESOME, now my only suggestion is to update the GUI with a little more shine!

Set it at 30 frames per second, and resulting video from a streaming site was to jerky to be usable. Uninstalled, and many files and reg entries remained. Had to restore from a backup to get drive back to normal.

Just trying to answer some of your qeustions.

ScreenCamera runs on Windows 7, so that should not be a problem.

Infinity is probably happening because you are using the Aero theme.

The file tsbyuv.dll missing has nothing to do with ScreenCamera. If I record it well it is related to Toshiba, and you can find the file on the web.

I can't answer about the legal aspects of recording webinars. I guess that it is legal as long as you don't distribute the material.

'ScreenCamera IM Device' is now called 'ScreenCamera HR', and it is listed along with your Sound, Video and Game controllers on your Device Manager.

ScreenCamarea exe is called scrcam.exe so if your anti-virus is accusing scr.exe then you are correct to block as it may be a virus.

I hope I have answered to you all.

I downloaded (to a new directory in PROGRAM FILES) - and the zip had README, and the 2 EXE files SETUP and ACTIVATE...

I executed them both. But it was supposed to go to my desktop and I don't see it there, and I don't see how to execute.

Can anyone advise?

I downloaded this software in hopes of recording video games, however ScreenCamera just wasn't up to it. My biggest problem with free software in general is quality, and I have to say, I was very impressed with this one. But the fastest it will record is 30 frames per second (which makes it look like a slide show). And the more FPS (frame per second) you choose to do, the slower everything else runs (as this uses alot of your computers attention). This makes for great software if your recording a how-to video on common, windowed, applications or something of the sort. But for gaming, I'll have to continue my search for good, free screen casting software. I also noticed that Audio was execlent quality as well. When I plugged my Mic in, it automaticly recorded from it (and with better resolution than I thought the mic was even capable of!). GREAT software, but I'm unintsalling it. Only reason; I wouldn't use it. Bottom line though, 5 Star! great quality, but not fluent enough for my tastes.
~PS: GAOTD users! If someone asks a question in the comments section and you know the answer, REPLY! And don't give negative scores to questions. Comments are as much about learning as they are about Teaching!!!

To: Alex Ferri

Would it be legal to use this software to capture full audio/video Internet "Webinars" (after paying the sponsor's fee, of course), so long as I'd only be using the copy to replay to myself and never to others???
Oftentimes, a Webinar sponsor will only permit their material to be viewed for a limited period of time, and only by signing in with username/password tandem...

WinXP Pro SP3 Asus MB w/AMD Athlon 64 x2, 4 gigs ram, Asus GeForce 9500 GT 512 Meg.
Install ran 3/4 of the way, reached the load-up-at-boot settings then blue screened. XP is set for auto-restart, reached the blue welcome screen and the last notes of the start-up .wav file, it hooked a loop on the music and rebooted... reboot loop...
Restored partion (many thanks to GAOTD team for the life savers!)
Don't know why the program flaked like that but I'm not trying again! Maybe next version. Thanks anyway!

A better alternative is BSR Screen Recorder. The trial version can be used without time limit. The purchased version is USD39.95, which is USD10 more than this software, but the features offered are significantly more and for those who are asking for picture in a picture, BSR Screen Recorder can do that.

Fine software - takes a powerful processor and lots of RAM to run at good frame rates but it's very, very useful ; especially when doing things which might be a little naughty! (at last I can "borrow" BBC iplayer vids).

For those who are thinking of capturing a video which is playing on media players like Windows Media Player, Real Player and QuickTime or GOM Player, which is the player I use extensively, take note that it will turn out blank, or confusingly transparent, if the original media is projected on a "hardware accelerated overlay layer". Anyhow, most videos played off a CD or DVD will most likely have been configured by your PC to make use of your video card's hardware accelerator.

The trick to capturing this media is to force off hardware acceleration, which is a separate subject altogether, so most video capture software will not tell you what to do.

Alternatively, play the media on a different media player, such as the VideoLAN (VLC) player, which does not use hardware accelerated overlay layer.

If your player ignores, or doesn't offer an acceleration setting, turn it off globally.

Finally, any video with audio captured off the screen or media player, the audio captured will be from the system speaker mode, which really means that the audio quality captured is bad. Try it out and you will know what I mean.

On the Infinity thing again, I did as you said to unmark the ‘Capture transparent windows’ checkbox, and still same problem of screen inside of a screen, inside of a screen.

Checkmarked it, and same thing happens. Uncheckmarked it again to see if it would reset. No change. Will turn computer off, go to work, and then see if restarting had helped. Otherwise, what else do I do?

The software scr.exe tries to access hard disk directly, which was detected by Online Armour firewall, and categorically blocked. Why, I have always wondered, would the software needs to access hard disk directly, which is frowned upon as this will potentially open the PC to malware and viruses, etc.

I would like to thank Fox, Doc, Skie, and everybody else who appreciate me being here. I feel like it is my responsability to help out.

Answering 27: That is happenning because you are capturing full screen and within the area is the contact webcam as well. Since it is in the corner try excluding that region of the screen from the capture.

I've installed on Vista Home and WinXP, and on both the PAUSE button does not seem to work.

On Vista, I had some trouble getting started from desktop icon; it loaded the 'process' but didn't actually start (3 times) - had to kill the processes in Task Manager and start from Start Menu. Now it runs ok, except in vista it has the 'infinity' problem even though 'transparent' is not clicked; it's ok in XP.

Resulting capture is nice, and easier to use than the Camtasia system.
However, i see that only a few minutes of recording screen gives a 934MB .avi file! (even without audio).

Just for curiosity, I loaded it on my Win2Kpro Pc -- loaded ok, but the 'image monitor' window area overlaps the top of the ScrCam control window and cannot be relocated - it overlaps the [X] button so one cannot exit! and the icon in the task bar does not provide a 'min, max, exit' menu so one cannot exit that way either. Had to cancel the task in Task Manager, at which point it said "Task cannot be cancelled; if in debug, exit debug..." BUT it did cancel anyway.
PAUSE button does not work in Win2K either.

All in all, I'm keeping it installed!! Thanks to all for making it available to us.

hi
can some one please explain, how to this
"(2) First Solution: Put ScreenCamera after ManyCam in the video path. How to do this? Select 'ScreenCamera IM Device' as the video source in Skype. Select 'ManyCam' as the video source in ScreenCamera. The video path will then be this: 'Logitech webcam' -> 'ManyCam' -> 'ScreenCamera' -> 'Skype'

(3) Second solution: Take ManyCam out of the video path. How to do this? Close ManyCam by right-clicking the mouse over ManyCam systray icon and select Exit. Select 'ScreenCamera IM Device' as the video source in Skype. Select 'Logitech webcam' as the video source in ScreenCamera. The video path then becomes this:
'Logitech webcam' -> 'ScreenCamera' -> 'Skype'

Hi Alex,

When trying to install ScreenCamera, Windows, (XP Pro SP3 ) says the file tsbyuv.dll is required and asks me to insert my XP Pro CD ROM. As I have not seen any comments about this so far, I wonder if it is a normal part of the installation procedure?
Any comments from you BEFORE I proceed with installation would be most appreciated.

Regards,
Nigel

This could have potential but there are several confusing aspects:
- Setup was awkward, asking me which webcam I wanted to use. Isn't this supposed to be the virtual webcam? Not clear why that question is being asked.
- Help was not intuitive at all. A better index would make a huge difference
- Manual view selection was awkward, forcing the selection of a fixed window size
- Audio didn't record, also audio input option "modem" is unclear
- Video for skype didn't work for me. Is there a skype version you need to have? I'm also on Vista, so I never know to blame the software or Vista
- Would be nice to be able to toggle between a real webcam and the virtual webcam
- Saving to FLV, SWF, or animated GIF would make it competitive with BBFlashBack free version

Overall, a decent tool that could be worth buying once it becomes more intuitive and exceeds the features of other free competitors.

With a video chat in MSN in full screen mode you are supposed to have a full screen image of the person you are talking to (the other webcam) and a small picture of your own image in the bottom right (my own webcam).

With your software running the small picture in the bottom right corner is not of my own webcam but of the person I'm talking to.

Thats the problem.

Nice program. Does what it says.

Can't seem to make a new folder, where you want it to save the video, if just using for screen/video capture.

Nice targeting feature, for just capturing a specific screen.

Regarding the program opening IE (see comment #4), it opened a Firefox tab for me.

For person to person video explaining an alternative program is TeamViewer4, which is free for non-commercial use - though both people need it. It can allow just the video you want to share, or allow full control. It's a great way to securely transfer files too.

Answering 21: I am not quite sure what you mean by other webcam, but it seems like you had your other webcam showing on the desktop, and when ScreenCamera recorded the full screen it captured the image of your other webcam but simply because it was showing on the desktop by some other program. Anyway, it wasn't clear to me what the problem was so if you want to give me more details, I can help further.

#14 Marty,

On your question about capturing flash video off the screen, why do you need a screen capture software as it does not make sense to capture the flash video this way, since the quality of the capture will be worse off than the original flash. By flash, I presume you mean flv or swf videos.

What most will do, like me, is to download the flash video using some video downloading software. If you are using Firefox, you can install an addon like Videodownloader or DownloaderHelper or Sothink SWF Catcher and use the addon to capture videos by actually downloading it, rather than capturing off the screen.

I can't get the product to work with MSN quite right. I have it set to Window mode and start the recording and go to full screen, then stop the recording. The recording if fine except that the small box in the lower right corner thats supposed to have my webcam has the other webcam...so a big picture of the other webcam and the same picture again in the bottom right.

thx
