Installed easily on Win 8 i7 laptop (to my D: drive as directed), activated itself when run.
Was impressed enough with the 3.2 test I did using a Nikon raw file to download and install 4.0 Studio. I liked the results of 3.2, similar to what I get with Portrait Pro 12, I would say 3.2 allows better mapping facial features. I wanted the ability to fix skin beyond the face, a function Portrait Pro lacks (at least in 12) so I tried 4.0 studio. It did a nice job on correcting the "flaws". However when I brought the saved (and watermarked) .tif into Photoshop the colors were muted, and the white background was now a slightly tinted shade of gray. I went back and checked the saved .tif from my test of 3.2 and found it too has the same issues, but to a lesser extent. This my be a fatal flaw for my uses. I look forward to hearing from the developer.

BobbyA, It looks like I may be able to work around the issue by adjusting the global sliders to compensate before saving. I will be interesting to see if the same thing happens when used as a plug-in.

Reply   |   Comment by BobbyA  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

BobbyA, The RAW conversion may differ in different editors.
If you prefer the result from Photoshop, you'd better convert RAW to TIFF first in Photoshop, and then edit it in PT Portrait.
If you have the Studio Edition, it's strongly recommended to use the plug-in.
PS: The plug-in will be installed into Photoshop automatically when install PT Portrait Studio Edition.

I installed with no problem on Win10/64 bit. Activated, started to use it. I may have missed it but I couldn't find a way to tell it where to save, since I don't save pictures to my user folder on C: but to a public user folder for photos on D. I pulled up a really bad selfie shot and started to play with the program. I found it very annoying to have to go to the website to find out how to do things. There could at least be a basic set of help FAQs or simple tutorials within the program. When a long-time user of graphic and photo-editing programs has problems finding things and figuring out how to use them, something is missing!

I was frustrated by how inconsistent it felt to select points on the fitting screen to change them - sometimes I could grab the blue controls, sometimes I couldn't. (And this was with it at 1:1 or larger!) I would have liked to have a few more points for eyes on eyelid and eyeball corrections, and for lips - and chin/jawline!!

I found the overall skin corrections easy to use and pretty effective. They worked like lots of other editing programs. However, I didn't find the skin mask tool until after I'd tried the blemish tool and other tools, so I was very frustrated. It should be first, and maybe part of Fitting, since it sets the skin areas to be worked on. Or at least label the tool sections directly!

I had no problems using the controls within each correction. Pretty obvious. Except that using the blemish tools with its own color/saturation/etc. sliders managed to change the entire image, not just what I was working on. I couldn't figure out how to just select what I wanted to change on particular areas without changing everything. (See previous paragraph about skin mask!) Didn't feel like checking the website.

I couldn't figure out how to make the blemish remover tool work consistently - the little arrow that sometimes shows up when you move a circle does what, exactly?Didn't feel like checking the website. So sometimes I could get things to smear, but it sometimes sorta bunched up and missed here and there. Being used to "blur" tools on other programs, where you put a selector or brush or finger on one place and move it over what you want blurred, this frustrated me. I couldn't figure out how to "feather out" the edges of a blemish correction without drawing a whole lot of little circles that then didn't do what I wanted consistently. I couldn't figure out how to "close up" or "cover over" or blur out what looked like a small slice in one place or a small cluster of raised little bumps in another. And then I finally found the skin mask, last of the correction icons, with its feather and eraser tools!

I ended up totally blowing up the memory on my notebook, which has 8 Gb of RAM, and runs Process Lasso to improve responsiveness. Got a blue screen that basically said "sorry, you messed up, collecting data, look up memory errors to learn what when wrong, wait for the restart."

And when it came back and I restarted PT Portrait I discovered nothing had autosaved along the way!!! Who makes programs that don't autosave a backup with different file name any more, thought that was standard for a decade or more!!! Why do you not have options like undo and redo for every step and maybe a history so you could go back 2 or 3 steps (it has them as apply or delete for each individual control section- the latter of which took away all the corrections when I used it once and there is no redo that I could find), as well as autosave?

Why would it have jumbled up my memory so badly from trying different things? Why is this so un-user-friendly?

I am uninstalling. I have lots of other tools that work more easily with how I think and explore options for a face. Thanks for the chance to try it, though.

When I first tried using this program it 'hung' as many users have reported, but it turned out that I was identifying the left and right points (mouth, eyes) from the subject's point of view. Once I changed to using the viewer's perspective of left and right it worked perfectly, and I'm very impressed, although I would only use the program on selected photos as it does take some time to tinker to get the results you want.

Downloaded and installed successfully on Win 10.

Tried three (3) different photos. Select six (6) features on the face in question.. answer if mouth is open or not... and then the program hangs. Even left the computer alone for thirty (30) minutes in case it was just being slow...(Although this is not a slow machine)

Am I doing something wrong?

Less is more. This is comparable to Portrait Pro. Better is some ways and not as good in others. I took a very grainy head and shoulders photo and working in small amounts, create layers to blend in PS to rid the pic of most of the grain to fix the terrible example photo. If you go overboard to clean skin you get an artificial look of too smooth.

Install was flawless. Nice to have a simple GOTD without registration hoops.

Improvement? Yes, add a filter to handle hair. I tried cleaning pixalated hair with the skin filter, but it doesn't look right, just sorta blurry hair.

There are no makeup changes or hair recolor, so does not completely compare with Portrait Pro. I think PT Portrait works better for handling skin.

This is a keeper. Good job.

After reading all the reviews I was very interested in giving the program a try. For some reason after I load the photo and follow the facial outlines the program stops responding. What seems to be my problem? I'm using a large file photo, about 5 MB. Do I need to use a smaller sized photo?

Reply   |   Comment by Lori Lengen  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

Okay I just tried using a smaller photo and the program still stops responding. Sadly I guess the program will have to be uninstalled if I can't use it. I'm running Windows 7, lots of memory and plenty of hard drive space. I have no problems running Adobe Photo Shop so I don't understand why I can't run this program.

Lori Lengen, Running Win 10 and it stopped responding after trying a couple different sizes. I changed compatibility to Win 8 and though you have Win 7, maybe changing compatibility to XP, Vista, etc. might work for you. Good luck...

Ok Windows 10 x64 Pro. Fast dl, easy activate. Gonna take bit of getting to know but first effort ok. It can 'chop' off the part of (drop & drag) picture working on. Like I was editing an eye profile and then noticed the whole image had been reduced to just the surrounding area of what I was working on. Save gives some options & offers new name to avoid overwrite, and can adjust quality (that is size of saved file). Has crop, rotate. Haven't tried color adjustments yet but looks like keeper for fast work. Thanks guys for good d/l technique.

VERY impressive program! Installed flawlessly on Windows 10/64. I especially liked the automatic registration. I was pretty amazed at the power of the program and how simple it was to use, I could even put a smile on the face of a student who wasn't smiling and it looked realistic.

Only problem I could find (and maybe I just overlooked it?) was lack of red-eye correction. Is it in there somewhere? Anyway, thanks for a great program.

One of the difficulties I find with these portrait retouching programs is that, err, they need a portrait to work on; of, to put it another way, the image has to be a single person portrait with the face making up most of the image. This rather limits their use. Say one has an image of a couple sitting at a table, with the skin tones in need of improvement: these programs fail, because they can't recognise the faces. I even tried the Skin Finer plugin a short while back - again, a nice idea, but limited by what it can tackle.

Reply   |   Comment by Jon Smith  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Jon Smith, PT Portrait has the ability to edit multiple faces in one photo. After fitting the first face, you can click "Add Face" button on the left panel to select another face.
If you have any suggestions, please feel free to tell us.

Reply   |   Comment by Caspar Lee  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+11)

Caspar Lee, thanks for your reply. I hadn't noticed that option, will give it a try. Does skin Finer have the same option - I didn't see it when I tried the plugin recently?

Reply   |   Comment by Jon Smith  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-3)

Jon Smith, SkinFiner automatically detects face in the photo and uses the face to determine the skin's color range. You don't need select a face, instead you should use the color pickers to edit the skin color range.

Reply   |   Comment by Caspar Lee  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

Caspar Lee, sorry to keep asking, but I think that was the problem: it detected only one face (or none if they weren't dominant in the image)?

Reply   |   Comment by Jon Smith  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

Jon Smith, you're right. The auto-detection may fail in some cases, but you can still select skin color manually.

Version 1.0 of this program was offered here in may 2013. Here are the comments:

https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/pt-portrait-1-0/

(OMG! I can't believe I was already commenting on GOTD over three years ago...)

This version installed smoothly over previous one.

If you still have version 1.0, you will find many improvements, mostly more precise settings.

To make the most of PT Portrait you will have to go through the hassle of carefully positioning all key points.
There are no gadget features. You won't be given snake eyes, not even human purple or green eyes if yours are (like mine) boringly brown. It will just remove red eyes. It won't even add colored eye shadow etc. but, strictly for retouching, it is an excellent program which, contrary to other software of this category, is suitable for men portraits, if used at low levels.

One suggestion, though, for a future version (if it is not in version 4, already available): very often, on photos, one eye looks smaller than the other one. So, it is a good thing to be given the choice to enlarge either one eye or both. But it would be even better to have the possibility to enlarge them both, but by different percentages.

Reply   |   Comment by ouialaraison  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

ouialaraison, You can enlarge left/right eye separately in "Reshape" module.

Reply   |   Comment by Caspar Lee  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Caspar Lee, my mistake! It works perfectly, I am (nearly) symmetric now. Just one tip for users: the left (right) eye is the one on your left (right) side, not the left (right) eye of the person on the photo.

I downloaded and tried this program several times. I don't have a University degree and I like it simple . Honestly, I've been teaching computer and using them since 1985 and I hardly ever come accross such a complicated program. If I have to use my Task Manager to close a program, then there is a problem. Keep trying and maybe you will come up with something that a Layman can use with decent results. Thank you GOTD but not this time.

Hi, anyone looking for more detailed info about this Product can first of all read some interesting Comments and tips given when PT Portrait was last offered on GOTD 3 years ago (ver.1) here: https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/pt-portrait-1-0/

Today's version 3.2 is best reviewed here: http://pt-portrait.software.informer.com/3.2/
It's relatively 'new', as it dates only to April 2016.

Differences between Today's Giveaway and its 'upgrades' are given on page when one tries to purchase them, they can be found here: http://photo-toolbox.com/product/portrait/purchase.html#TAB ,or as stated below:

'What's New

4.0.1(Studio)
■Bug fixed: PT Portrait's PS plug-in conflicts with SkinFiner's plug-in.

4.0
1.New skin detection algorithm is used(faster and more accurate).
2.Improve skin smoothing algorithm to retain more strong details.
3.New algorithms for "Skin Imperfections" sliders(Pores/Wrinkles/Shine/Shadow/Redness).
4.Add Shadow & Highlight sliders in "Skin Color" panel, and use the new skin contrast algorithm.
5.Preset can be created with categories.
6.Bug fixing.

3.2
1.Support high DPI display devices and dynamic DPI changing.
2.Add navigator panel.
3.Improve skin smoothing algorithm.
4.Support displaying layer transparency effect in plug-in mode.
5.Add flow control in skin mask brush.
6.Bug fixing.'

All in all not a bad, light Photo Tool on Offer today and even that (lesser) version worth keeping. Some even say it's a 'must-have tool'. Wish this Developer could consider some 'automatic presets' in future, like in Perfect365, which in this field stands almost unbeatable, as it offers user both automatic and manual adjustments even when opting out of make-up as such.. Here, with a use of its key features: Fitting, Makeover, Reshape - with any photo that already had been 'enhanced' in any previous session and saved as one - user cannot simply 'jump' straight to other stages of it (like Makeover/Reshape) without going through Fitting first, so that lack of easy navigation and choice could be improved too? Thanks.

The program is not bad - The interface definitely could be improved especially the sliders. There are similar programs on the market, my favorites being Perfect365 and Photo Makeover. I will keep this program.

I would suggest a desktop shortcut link for ease of use. A right click context menu on Explorer would also be useful...

Thanks for the Giveaway Photo-Toolbox and GOTD :)

Caspar Lee,
Found the problem; when a previous version had been had been uninstalled my unInstaller had not removed the folder where it had been installed.
Because of this I was not given the opportunity to choose where to install it this time. Another problem is your installer does not give information regarding the creation of shortcuts or installation directory under these conditions.
If this is rectified it would be a great help to the user.

The program is unusable! It always stays in the "Fitting" mode. The sliders never appear and there is no way to get to them. Whatever you click on just stays where it is. Where the adjustment sliders should be there is only an analysis of the photo that was selected to work on.
Computer is an Intel 4GHz i7 running Windows 10 so there is nothing that should not work with it.
Too bad, the video looked promising!
