#67 "Free software is good software in my opinion."

Give me your email address and I'll send you some "good" virus software. It's free, so you know it's good.

Thanks Belgian dude - post #83.

I am using Thunderbird but downloaded the others to compare them. A quick look at Fonlow's Open Contact - details how to use it in a portable version which interacts with Thunderbird Portable.

FYI on portable suites go to:

How do you know when you have installed and registered this software program. I am not getting or finding confermation message when I use the send authorization buttion. I get a message to send dgalaxy@dgalaxy.net that contains an Authorization code="number removed" This code needed to generate you registration key. I have both tried to send the message and enter the number in the authorization space and the entered apply registration button. I get flash message that says I have registered but no code or giveawayoftheday message appears in the registration key.

Am I registered or not?

Sincerely,

Richard

Looks remarkably like Custom Addressbook (freeware and shareware versions)that downloads for 1 MB (http://www.customaddressbook.com). This office geek will pass this time, thanks, but hope for more software like this. Got too many address books in all sizes that all do different stuff now..and now desperately clinging to my paper filofax.

The giveaway is half-way over and STILL the dated, unfunny Borat jokes are coming fast and furious. I understand there are a lot of people egging the wanna-be comedians on with cries of "LMAO", "ROTFL", and other well-thought out criticism. The bad news is that the people who think that the "jokes" are even remotely funny are just as jaw-grindingly stupid as the lame clowns making them. Ah, well, it takes all kinds to make a world.
Which brings up the excellent point put forth by fourvin (#51): very few of the "English-speaking" folks on this site can afford to laugh at those who haven't mastered the language when they themselves know almost nothing of structure, usage, spelling, or punctuation. Happily for them, their lack of breeding and education will prevent them from feeling shame over their ignorance. Sadly for the rest of us, the boring efforts at humor will continue.

I remain,

El Fabuloso

Instead of using this software that seems hasn't been updated in 2 years and where they couldn't even be bothered to actual make it look and sound (who the heck did the translation?) as if someone cared, why not use :

http://kurlo.com/
or
http://www.fonlow.com/opencontacts/
or
Thunderbird
etc...

Those are always free. Those always offer support. Those will let you import from Outlook. Those can be used at home and at work.

For those defending the outrageously silly English used by Power Phone Book let me point out that the least one can expect from a company that wants to do business in another language is that they make sure they don't sound like a joke.

I'm rather fluent in Dutch and English. If need be I can help myself in French or German. I understand a little Spanish and a little Italian. That's it I'm afraid.
Perhaps I can be paid by them to do the translations in Norwegian, Japanse and Hindi.

#8 that was funny :) Thank you GAOTD but I cannot see the usefulness of this program, especially keeping such data on a computer; hm... maybe if it would be a phone as well, but otherwise the risk is too great. Thanks though :)

ALAN hasn't posted yet so I'll save him the trouble. Here goes:

Great software, get now Power Phone Book is an organizer of new generation. It has all standard functions as modern organizer, additionally allows to user. Thanks GAODT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My take: this Dld and ran OK but it's more like a work in progress than a finished app: the inability to import is a deal breaker in my case -- though for users looking to build up from a fresh-start, it may well be for them.

I cannot believe anybody bothered to launch a product of this nature (mine is so-called "Corporate Edition") without a working "Import" function.

Even a basic CSV import utility would be something - but to assume that we're all going to key everything from scratch - how naive can you get.

Also, I had to switch off my (F-Secure) firewall to get the install to work - most users would have just given up.

If I hadn't got it as a gift I'd be in line for refund already. As it is, I don't even dare uninstall because I suspect it shares database management components with other applications.

Come back when you've thought through the user ergonomics.

First comment!

Just kidding :-)

About the software - not worth downloading. Not even for free. I guess companies like DG Software need to create a new category/title for useless applications:

If shareware doesn't work, even freeware fails to make you famous, try CASHBACKWARE!!

Some people might consider these pre-Flinstones programs if you pay them for the wasted time...

#73, try Free English at http://www.free-english.com/ , Linguistic Funland at http://www.tesol.net/teslsoft.html , ESL (English as Second Language) studies at http://www.eslgold.com/ , and Free ESL at http://www.eslgold.com/ .

You are absolutely correct about the mean-spirited comments regarding non-native speakers' use of the English language. Judging by the poorly constructed sentences in this forum, many native speakers have yet to master its intricacies. Personally, individuals attempting to master multiple languages inspire me...I'm strugging with Native American linguistics. I can only imagine the complications encountered when writing code in a foreign language!

(I reckon the DG Software site was presented using translation software, which is notoriously sloppy.)

Ummmm, I think the Windows XP supplied address book has more "power". New generation? That generation just got sent back in time 10yrs if their using this. Don't "phone books" come WITH numbers? I can't find my local Pizza Hut's number in here! It's a powerless "organizer", well wait maybe it has some power, *sticks tongue on software like a 9V battery test*, nope it's dead. Uninstalled.

#5, your just that, the 5th to comment. #25, GOTD did! Must be nice to be rich. #33 lmao. #57, if you read everything then you'd know who Borat is (Google it) lol.

My great grandfather was Russian and his accent never reflected in his writing's, the site needs or needs a new translator with better English grammar skills.

Thanks for the offer GOTD.

#17 I think the word you are looking for is 'better.' While I couldn't find a good, free software for help with speaking English. I did find a program called Word Web 5 that helps you find synonyms and antonyms of any word on your screen by pressing control + right click on them.

There's not a lot for me to use with this program but it's really mean to make fun of someone's English because they haven't completely learned the complicated language.

#67 Note, please, that respect is a two-way street. If a software program needs to install or manipulate other programs in order to function, ethical business practice demands user notification PRIOR to installation.

Free software is not good software if it meets any of these conditions:

1. It fails to perform as advertised or expected;
2. It installs and manipulates other programs in order to function,
without prior user notification;
3. It acquires and sends personal information to unknown
parties without authorization;
4. It does not uninstall completely;
5. It contains unadvertised spyware or malware.

I failed it on three out of five of the above-stated conditions. Please refer to the forums for a more complete view of the complications behind installation of this software.

As a general note, negativity expressed via internet shorthand tends to showcase one's intellectual immaturity; the same can be said of grammatical errors and consistently misspelled words. Under those circumstances, any valid argument is likely to be disregarded and will expose your shortcomings rather than those of the developers. Very few of us write elegant, high-level code (think: Guido van Rossum) and speak several languages, so insulting the efforts of others in a public forum, particularly in sloppy English, is rather callow.

A spiffy Navy salute to the GAOTD team; your enthusiastic professionalism sets a standard by which other sites can be rated.

I am amazed at the amount of negative response to this. You people have no respect or gratitude towards the people that worked to create these products, and then give them to you for free, or GAOTD for providing you with that opportunity. In the several months I have been watching GAOTD I have not given a SINGLE negative. Free software is good software in my opinion.

Thank you, #51. . . couldn't agree more. When criticizing someone's use of the English language, the comment would be much more elegant were the writer to be aware that it's is a contraction of it + is (not the possessive of it). I am humbled by those whose first language is not English yet take the risk of communicating with this crowd in that language. A comedian would say this is a "tough room." :-) I loved the Borat comment.

Good morning everyone! ;)

I just have to know who Borat is - c'mon fellow GOTD junkies, let me in on the joke - please?

I went to their website and this 'phone book' is a 2005 release (no further upgrades available either,) - no wonder they were happy to give it away!

Sorry DG Software - even with freeware I want a product that's updated at least once a year!

However, I did download it to test for the benefit of the software developer. Did anyone else who downloaded the phone book, feel concerned about all the technical instruction contained within the download?

I'd appreciate it if those that d'loaded it would please have a look at the installer and tell me if I have to use these commands at some point (and where!) or if I can just ignore them.

You can tell that I read 'everything! *laughs*

I'll be back a little later after testing the software.
Beam me up Scotty!

No way to import? Who has time to manually enter all the info? Would've been a good program, if I could've imported. It's not something I could glance at and use. I don't have time to try and figure things out. Much less add all the info I'd to access from a phone book. Thanks anyway.
