Pixel Studio 4.17 was available as a giveaway on August 30, 2024!
Pixel Studio follows the key strong points from all the of the Pixarra TwistedBrush artist software products but with a focus on pixel art. This art, sometimes called retro, makes no attempt to hide pixels and sizes of images are often very small. Useful as utility for creating icons, sprites, and other small images for games and websites but also for art on its own. There is no surprise that pixel art is popular, it is simply fun!

Pete, it should do but may require launching the program with administrator rights either in the right click menu on the shortcut or via compatibility settings as it registers activex components on the fly rather than at install.

after having an older version 2.17 from a previous giveaway the zoom has been de-restricted to some extent in that the minimum zoom level can now go down to 100% and even lower I got it down to 20% before getting bored ... View menu
Zoom Fit does not work properly with largish images just setting zoom to 1600% and not even taking into account the pixel dimensions of the canvas... and always throws you from where you are to the exact center of the image... annoying! Maybe the current version fixes that? Specifically for pixel art I miss the ability to select a sub part of a larger input picture and elevate that to a new pixel art canvas of a *chosen* size and the ability to import a bigger raster image or svg/wmf/emf down to a pixel art dimension say 32x32 pixels and then use the pixel editing facilities to *fix* the forced resizing anomalies manually until AI can do it by itself and produce near perfect results. I can't see any way to easily do that just within the program, I can't even find out how to select a rectangular selection to elevate to an new pixel art canvas! Is the UI that alien or can't we even select a rectangular area? The edit menu selection seems stuck at the full size of the canvas! maybe that's fixed in the current latest version?!?

TK, I bit the bullet and downloaded version 5.06 trial to see if anything had been radically changed(fixed) and nope Zoom Fit still zooms to 1600% regardless of canvas dimensions and still see no way to select a subsection of the canvas... guess I'll revert back to 4.17 and hope some day I find a use for it over the many other graphics programs I have on tap. I note their website states it could be possible due to the programs design to have to run the program as an administrator under windows 10... (and probably 11 too) this suggests they are writing to the programs installation directory or registering activex components on the fly so when switching between pixarra sub products they need to re-register the current installs activex controls over the other products activex controls entries as they may be incompatible versions. sigh... version control and good program design those were the days.

TK, pixelstudio does NOT remove on uninstall the AppData\Roaming\Pixarra\Pixel Studio folder and sub folders meaning that if you try out version 5.06 and uninstall it it will leave behind version 5.06 artsets which cannot be loaded into a fresh install of 4.17 so without lifting the hood and manually cleaning out the uninstalled versions detritus you cannot use a 4.17... it also means you cannot have the trial 5.06 working alongside a working registered 4.17... so one must dive under the hood and manually delet the AppData\Roaming\Pixarra\Pixel Studio folder and contents when switching between versions! once again sigh... If you are not confident looking under the hood and fiddling with windows and programs files don't install a newer version than the giveaway to see what we are missing or could have had... it's not worth the hassle. It does not uninstall it because the installer does not create the AppData\Roaming\ sub-folders! so the uninstaller knows nothing about it the folder hierarchy is created on first run if it does not already exist... I guess it's one of those folders hierarchies that custom uninstall programs are supposed to find and remove. Note that folder also contains the stored registered status in one of the files so deleting it after removing say version 5.06 will remove registration state of 4.17 if that was activated before 5.06 was installed, you'll have to re-activate it once you've reverted to 4.17 fully.
