Dear TK, you were right on the money. It was indeed my firewall (wfc), which was set by me to the recommended level (=Medium Filtering). Once I had lowered the filtering one step lower, I was able to install Photo Background Remover today, even though, usually, one cannot do that after the giveaway offer expires.

Photo Background Remover uses the same kind of inpainting logic as the popular Inpaint, only in this case to remove backgrounds rather than object in a photo. It does work, though not always perfectly, and has an automatic batch mode for folks like eBay sellers who might take a dozen [or dozens] of product snapshots at a time. You could compare it to apps like Franzis Cutout or features in an image editor, e.g. automatic selections in Photoshop [none of those always work perfectly either BTW].
