Why do you guys (#2, #22)keep being so petty about what it costs and is it worth it. This is irrelevant. Nobody cares what you think because it's free. So many petty complaints. Perhaps you shouol just uninstall "Software Performer".

Unless it can convert MS Publisher (.pub) files to .pdf format, this program will not work for me.

Further to my comment no.31, I uninstalled. It uninstalled really fast, which worried me. What had it done to Office while installing that it evidently didn't uninstall? So feeling uneasy about the whole thing, I did a system restore to an earlier restore point.

QvPDF is an open source pdf printer driver written by German programmer "QuoVadis: which is hosted at Sourceforge and released under the GPL.

Which means that PDFTiger's source code should also come under the GPL and be available on demand.

So where can we find the source code, PDFTiger?

#26: the "Add a Printer" dialog is required to install the PDF creation "printer driver". The "x86" is for "32-bit" OS's, which your confirmed you are running (snip)I have Vista 32 bit OS (/snip).

You didn't have to choose to provide the disk, you could try doing without. Often the required printer specific files have already been copied to the disk and the OS knows where to find them.

When creating a pdf, try doing it from within Word rather than PDFTiger. I suspect that it may not recognize the newer DOCX formats. Try with a DOC or RTF format file. For DOCX try in Word: you would do File/Print then select the PDFTiger "Printer" from the printers list.

I looked at PDFTiger when it was given away by the developer a couple of weeks ago -- at that time I wasn't really impressed with their PDF printer driver [based on an HP brand printer driver] or the app's impact on Windows' registry, so I didn't go much further, until today. I don't recall any install problems, & my prior notes don't mention any, but today's GOTD version did not install smoothly -- kept getting Windows Add Printer dialog & the missing install file warning dialog others have mentioned. Canceling both the Add Printer & missing file dialogs, I clicked Finish for the original setup file, using Windows' Explorer drilled down to the printer drivers installed [look for a folder called: "hewlett_packardhp_co16e1_bprint"], copied "PSCRIPT.HLP" to Program Files\qvPDF, renamed it as PSCRIPT.HL_, & ran setup again... I still had to cancel the Add Printer dialog, but this time the qvPDF printer was installed.

Prior to trying that work-a-round I tried installing the older copy I had of PDFTiger, but since I'd already run through today's GOTD setup it didn't behave any differently, i.e. I still got the 2 dialogs & the printer driver wouldn't fully install. Once I got everything installed I tried a fresh trial download & setup ran just fine, & the key in the GOTD readme still worked, so you *might* have better luck running that version install, but I can't be certain.

PDFTiger seems to work OK, but Murphy's law is in effect so I couldn't give the PDF to DOC a decent look [have to completely reinstall Ofc & all updates]. PDF to text doesn't give any images of course, but might be useful in some situations -- PDF to HTML worked, but the layout was a bit odd so I'd want to use it only as the basis to create new html -- PDF to SWF seems to just take pictures (screenshots) of the PDF (1 per page), then adds those images to slides -- PDF to Image worked as advertised.

Installation is complicated, with setup files inside of setup files inside of setup files. The PDFTiger app itself is responsible for the majority of the 1600+ registry entries, is installed to the qvPDF folder [64 files, 2 folders, ~42 MB], & that folder includes both the setup files & the app itself ["PDF.exe" is the setup file for PDF Tiger minus the printer driver]. The PDFTiger folder OTOH holds the setup file for the (more-or-less) complete install [it's what the top level setup.exe expands to (not including the GOTD wrapper)]. The majority of registry entries seem to concern the plugins, but like the email plugin you can't access or use them(?). Uninstall doesn't remove the majority of registry adds, or the printer driver.

Your mileage with most PDF converters will vary depending on what created the PDF you're starting out with -- bear in mind that Adobe sells PDF as a destination format that's difficult (if possible) to disassemble to access the original content [Microsoft is the same way RE: .XPS]. While PDFTiger works & has an easy interface, it didn't seem to do a better job with conversions than competing apps, with the possible exception of .doc which I couldn't/didn't really check.

I did download this against the popular advice that it is junk. It did install ok as well as register but that is as far as goes.

The window did pop up to install/setup printer service. I am not sure why but then an even wierder thing happened when I tried to convert from doc to pdf.. It printed all the doc pages to the printer instead of converting them! I tried multiple files, and all just went to the queue on my printer and nothing converted!

I have Vista 32 on this machine. I don't want to try it on the others.

Uninstall option is given from the pdftiger link under programs but their uninstall kicks you to a webpage wanting to know WHY you are uninstalling. Afterwards it did say that it was uninstalled, yet when I went to the C:/programs/pdftiger folder there was still a lot of files left behind. So if you uninstall afterwards, make sure you go back and delete the folder out of your directory too. I have not checked the registry to see if things were left in there too.

I need to batch convert RTF, DOC, TXT files to PDF for use on a Nook so would appreciate to hear programs that people have that DO work.

installation error "The file ‘pscript.hl_’ on (Unknown) is needed",
developer should do more testing before releasing it to the public.

try to change 10 multi-page ojpeg tiff files to PDF, but failed, and I have the same feeling with @30 (Frank ).

when talking about creating PDF from tiff images, I prefer Foxonic Pro which was given away here before, more effective and more stable.

Installed fine except for printer. The real issue is converting pdfs to word or text. It Failed badly at this. Converted a pdf to an uneditable jpg in word. When I then tried to convert to text it returned just a symbol in the upper left. Nothing else. Many word to pdf converters out there. I was hoping this would work in reverse. Sadly no.

Apparently the pscript.hl_ is a Hewlett Packard pscript.hlp file. - After reading Wendy's (#26) post I wonder if those with the missing pscript.hl_ problem had or have HP machine or PostScript loaded?

I found this site - http://www.filewatcher.com/m/PSCRIPT.HLP.14234.0.0.html - that claims to have download mirrors for that file - I did NOT check them for viruses and such and currently have WOT turned off... - Of course snagging those files might depend on how much you really, really, really want to download today's offering.

I don't play with PDF's so I'll pass on today's and won't be finding out if I am missing pscript.hl_. Good luck to the developers.

This program is not needed for converting to PDF. Several modern word processors have a PDF export function built in. And if you are using one that doesn't, there are numerous freeware utilities that will convert any printable file to PDF. These include, among others, Primo PDF, Bullzip, and PDF Creator.

PDF XChange Viewer, a powerful and versatile free alternative to Adobe Reader, can export PDF files to any of several graphic imsge formats.

That leaves one function for which PDF Tiger might be useful, if it lives up to its claims: Conversion of PDF files to an editable format such as RTF. For documents that you created, you are unlikely to need such capability. Normally you would maintain the document in the editable format, and export to PDF after making any changes. This is similar to maintaining the source code of a program, and recompiling after making changes.

But if you need to make changes to a PDF that you did not create, and for which you do not have the source file available, then you'll need something that can reverse-engineer the PDF to an editable format. Again there is a similarity to programming: Using a decompiler and/or disassembler to try to extract editable source code from a compiled binary file.

Such reverse-engineering, whether your starting point is a PDF or a binary program file, is not likely to produce a carbon copy of the original source file. At best it will give you something to work with.

Got it installed, registered and it works for me, but the installation process really has problems. Win 7, X64 laptop.

When I started installing it, it sent into the green bar install progress screen. It went to new install screens two more times, BUT the message was the same in each one, so it looked as if it was repeating. It wasn't. It got to the next place in the process where there were two processes saying installing, but it closed back to one after a little bit/ After finish it tried to run and got the printer error. I opened the program on my PC and got the message again, I went into the register key on the bottom right and it registered fine for me. after removing spaces from the back of the key. It does not left justify in the registration box, which is another problem.

I then chose a text PDF at random and it converted it to Word just fine. I also converted a JPG picture to PDF successfully. I have not tried the other functions. For image conversion, be sure to change the default BMP to something useful on the file types. If it is left as BMP, then no pictures are found. IMO,it should default to jpg or anything else other than BMP. Also, an All formats option would be useful.

Everything is working now and I am keeping it.

My interest in this software was PDF to Word conversion. I downloaded and installed on Vista 32bit. Installation was fairly long - the system spent ages reconfiguring Office. Registration went ok. Tried converting several PDF docs to Word. It created a Word 97-2003 file each time (no option for Word 2007), but the result was 0 characters each time.
My best suggestion to the publisher is to get PDF to Word converter to work. My second is to include a "minimize" button. Either the GUI is on the screen or you have to shut the program. Couldn't find a way to minimize.
Really disappointed in this. Uninstalling now. Sorry GAOTD.

Tested a pdf creation from 5 images (PNG) using the item select from folder method - result was 5 very tiny images on page one, thought there was an indication that 5 pages were created. Not able to even determine what the images were until I changed the magnification to 800 and 1600 and then had good images. It was then i could tell that there was in fact a page break (visible) for each image.
Selected to expand width of image to fit page and magnification went up to 2100. Looked fine

It pre-selected an output folder c:\output
I allowed that - the first run thru no file appeared in the folder, thought the folder was created ... but the second creation run thru did appear.

Each image came from the same folder ... I could not select them as a group and I did not want the entire folder.
When selecting each image the default image type was bmp and I had to change that to png each time (in order to see the images-files I was after)

I then started over using drag and drop and 6 different images and that worked fine and each one was on its own page and full size at 100 percent resolution.

I then tried the original 5 images drag and drop and also created a pdf with one per page and full 100 percent viewable, but i had to reduce to 25% to get rid of the pixelation on 3 of the images. So there was a problem when using different image file sizes together.

When I tried to select 'more than one at a time' to remove from the selected list it could not be done

I was never asked for the registration number and could not find a place to enter it

During installation I had an error window for auto install of the printer driver but the printer driver dialog window was open and I continued to select a printer and it accepted the selection -- I then selected finished from the main install window.

Using -- XP64

I have used this program since it was offered in 2009 with very good results; better than most PDF creators I've tried. I'm baffled by this software. Baffled, I tell you.

After installation, an Add Printer Wizard box popped up. I was given 3 different options for the kind of printer driver I wanted to install. The X86 option was ticked so I chose that one. (I had no idea what any of the options meant.) The next screen asked me to wait while the printers on the hard drive were retrieved. It was a very long wait. I was given the choice of Lexmark or Epson. I chose the Lexmark option as the Epson no longer works. The software then asked me to choose Have Disk. I miraculously found the driver and software CD for the Lexmark and popped it in the CD drive. In the root of the drive, the software program found a driver (an inf file) I selected it, but the program told me it didn't like it. I hunted through the folders but couldn't find another inf file. I had to cancel out of the Add Printer Driver Wizard and go through the installation process again.

This time when we got to the Add Printer Driver Wizard part of the show, the program retrieved the Adobe PDF driver from the hard drive. Eureka, I thought. That's what I should have chosen in the first place. The program accepted this option. The program then registered without a hitch. I opened the program and clicked the create PDF from File button. I chose a very small docx file. The windows file opened and closed, and I was returned to the PDFTiger software without any jubilant announcement that the conversation was successful or an offer to open the file. I hunted through the folder where the docx file was to find the resulting PDF - nothing. I thought it funny that the software didn't ask for a file name and where I wanted the file saved to - or gave me any options like saving for screen or print.

I decided to convert a much larger document. Again, the word docx opened and this time I got the conversation progress box up. However, I was not asked for a file name, file location or if I wanted to overwrite a file of the same name - or given options. And, again, at the end of the conversation I could find no sign of a resulting PDF file.

Could someone throw any light into this? The publisher? :)

I have a Vista 32 bit OS, btw.

International Characters

installed correctly on 3 machines (XP, Win7-32, and Win7-64), all working fine.

The software delivered what it promised; yet on the other hand I encountered very bad result only in one case, that is the moment that I try to convert a multi-language based Word Document, it totally messed up the output PDF! Most of the foreign character sets were converted either into boxes (windings font box) or empty spaces!

Other free or open source PDF generators worked better for this particular purpose (download.com got plenty of them!), especially those which install themselves as printer device; most simply would convert ANY printable materials indiscriminately to PDF.

Overall assessment: I like it and it is a true thumps up package only if you are in no need for internal character sets.

Cheers

None of the PDF applications I have used is 100% accurate. My work-around is to process files in small batches. Also, be prepared to do some DTP work.

The program gives a error while installing on xp. Some pscript.hl_ is missing and is needed. This file is not on my system. Could you please look into this?
