You made some decent points there. I did a search on the issue and found most individuals will agree with your blog.

I'm with zepherdell. The ONLY program I have that's stuck in My Documents which is not my choice is, unfortunately, Acrobat Pro. So, since I'm already stuck and have not installed any other software with such a restriction, I've deleted this download. Allow me to set my directory and I'd probably have actually tried it out and bought copies for three PCs at work. Too bad guys!

Cannot be virtualized but a capable application.

Under Win 7 Ultimate x64 I experienced none of the difficulties encountered by others. Splits were good, save for one extra page at the end of each file. Merges were perfect. I couldn't test the protection/encryption feature because I didn't have the resources at the time.
Installation was very fast and activation was no problem at all.

My main use will be to extract text so I can read it on my MP4 player. Eventually I hope to switch over to an eReader or tablet at which time this software might not get used very much.

My only grumble is to agree with others that the output folder should be remembered between uses. Other than that, its thumbs up from me, with thanks to GAOTD and AlgoLogic.

hmmmm...installs English, no matter what language you choose from the dropdown list.
Starting it with a Standard User Account results in a message stating it needs to be opened as an administrator, but works normally after you click OK in this message...

I agree about not liking the default location. I have enough crap on my desktop.
I like the program,on many respects.
Even though someone stated there are free programs that do the same thing, I tend to think more time and effort is put itno this program, and if you listen to the feedback, you'll be improving the product. Thank you.

I just downloaded this program on an XPpro sp3, all went fine. I guess it is registered, the GOTD register link came up but nothing in the program says if it is registered or not. The only feature I didn't try was the protection, all the others work fine. The only one I would use is the splitter; I have a nice converter program from a previous GOTD. I split a cookbook into individual pages in seconds, it was only 11 pages so I assume larger pdf files would take longer. I agree with the others about the default save, if you can't/won't allow the user to choose the default folder, at least make the default folder 'my documents' like other programs.

I also purchased and use PDFILL and it is fabulous. I also use PDFTOOLS (FREEBIE), which:
Encrypts/Decrypts
Splits/Joins
Stamps
Rearranges
Creates PDFs

If I want to EDIT I use the freebie, PDF Exchange, also a FREEBIE.
You can go to freewarefiles.com to download them.

DOES THIS PDF Protector, Splitter and Merger Pro DO MORE THAN THE ABOVE?

Hardware: NB305 Toshiba netbook, 2GBram, 500GB HD, Win7 pro.

Downloaded without incident. I do not consider testing whether the setup.exe works from within the .zip to be valid for beta testing

Install:
"Check .Net version (Requi..."
This is either something people should have a choice about or not (probably not) but shouldn't be offered as an option that is greyed and checked in "Select components to install:" If you feel the user should have a chance to opt out of installing (since it won't run without this component) be direct: put up a requestor saying that you need it, and if they don't want it they should cancel now. In actual fact, this whole Choose Components step is superfluous: we have no choice about having the .NET version checked and/or updated, and there'd be no reason to run the setup.exe if you didn't want to install the program! One check to allow the user to escape if they don't want you messing with their .NET setup (most don't care, anyway) and go.

Run after install:
Window fits exactly (vertically) on my netbook! Yea for AlgoLogic on this. It is also resizeable from too small to display a single character and (one guesses) as large as the world. (Additional note: you can resize the window and minimize it while the program is working on PDF files: A major plus!)

A quick look at their web pages reveals some interesting language problems and typos. (Quick examples: Language, the name of the batch-capapable file renamer "Batch File Renamer", which can (and really wants to be) parsed as "Batch file" renamer; typo, in the description of today's software, "extarcted". Both are on the Products page. Get a tech writer, AlgoLogic, and institute a beta-test process for all company writings.)

The help menu has only one entry: Online help. This brings up the web page with help for the non=Pro version. Side issue: the online help is pretty confusing, with lots of nearly-identical pictures, sometimes indicating a button push by a very subtle pastel color change of the button in question. With the overall pastel color scheme, it took many times comparing the pictures to find the difference, even with the text as a hint. No outcomes are shown (merge 8 files into one, help stops showing the button push, but not the resulting file in explorer or anything.) The language is stilted asianglish. This is a minus. There is no offline help at all, which is a major minus. And, since the help is not for the Pro version, there is no documentation for the last two tabs. Folks at AlgoLogic, it is generally a Bad Thing(tm) to have a worse help file for your Pro version than the lower version, but it's a NoNo(tm) to not have one that describes the Pro features at all!

The problem with directories is important: here is an annoyance that gives and gives and gives. Changing directories is fairly standard, but double-clicking on a lowest-level directory doesn't accept it as the destination, you must always click "OK". Making a new directory does leave the new directory selected, OK is still required (not double-click to set it as the destination. This is all default action for the requestor, and probably doesn't need to be modified. On the other hand, changing tabs resets the destination to the default Desktop location, as does closing and reopening the file. Since neither of these resets the file-open requestor's target directory, I suspect it's just an oversight or a broken mechanism to retain the target directory...odd in that, if someone were actually _designing_ the operation of a program like this, they'd probably feel that starting at a default (documents dir, perhaps) was sensible, but keeping the user's choice of targets until the user changes it was more appropriate. Also, having a different output directory for each tab is not unreasonable, so retaining the output directory should be on a tab-by-tab basis. The desktop is _not_ a desirable default! At the least, set the default to be either an AlgoLogic directory off the root of the C: drive, or in the Documents directory, eh?

The two categories which make this the Pro version, extract to text and extract to image, had variable results. Depending on the file, the program either produced an empty directory and an error (many high-resolution full-page scan files failed in this way), or really crappy output, or really good results: text conversion on a full-page scan paper (AES1.pdf from the ElectroNotes web site) are OCRd with amazingly good results for such dirty input. Image extraction tried to produce images of the whole-page scans, but the results were very low resolution (unreadable) and negative-image. PDFs with no text at all, and lots of full-page images (tanglewood schedule, most files from IMSLP.org) failed utterly to produce images. On the other hand, the Raspberry Pi.PDF (quickstart file for the single-board computer of that title) produced lovely images in proper color and resolution, but text extraction found no text after the first image on the title page.

I was also annoyed by the status being just "Processing" the whole time. You know how many pages there are, you know which page you're working on. Tell us. Please.

Other functionality splitting, merging and password protection seem to be much like the previous offering (the non-pro version) and I'll skip them to keep this post 'reasonable size', on the assurance that others are testing it.

Overall:
Some design decisions need to be rethought (or made) and a little more credit given to the user. More indicators to help us figure out what causes an error are in order. The "STOP" indicator blocking the information in the listing needs to be fixed, best by replacing the action button (with the green checkmark) with the Stop button while operating (with a stopsign graphic maybe?) When it works, it works very well, when it doesn't the results are frustrating and uninformative. Resolution options for image output are a necessity. I'd like to see a script abilty. If I have seven pieces of Baroque music which I want to reformat to a PDF that automatically prints on 17x11 paper for folding into a book, and they're all the same length, a simple script to reorder the pages (by splitting and then merging in the proper order) would be very useful. Look-and-feel is simple and good and even pleasant.

I agree with zephyrdell (comment 16). It is annoying that you have to set the output file location every time you load the programme. My real problem with this software is that when splitting a PDF document that has 2,231 pages, is 89 Meg in size, in to four parts, two of the four files are very close to 85 Meg in size. I then tried splitting the 2,231 page document in the eight sections, but again the resultant output file sizes were around 82 Meg for two of the eight. To me it defeats the purpose of splitting files to reduce size.

Install fine on win7x64. I'm interested in the extract image feature.
Works fine although I expected I can specify which page of pdf I want the image extracted but unfortunately no such feature. All images from all pages are extracted. (ok, workaround is to extract the specify page, then perform image extract)
By the way, the program seems to require .Net framework as the setuphas on option (grey out) to check for .net requirement. Which .Net ver is required? There is no mention on it's website. I wish to install on XP too but if .Net 4 is required then I will not want to install iton XP.

Thought I would add my 2¢ here. I downloaded this before from GAOD and use it. Just got a new computer and was glad to see this again. It downloaded and installed fine on my new Win7/Pro 64 bit system. Very disappointed that upon changing the location of the files to be merged or split, it won't stay at that file the next time you use the program. Seems the default has to be desktop and I am not a fan of saving files to my desktop. Please allow saving to another location (Output file) to be saved upon exiting the program.

Downloaded the Setup.exe, installed this program. The program is not activated. Clicking on Help/Activate Now, I receive the prompt "AlgoLogic Software Registration Form" which asks for a ActivationKey Code, and then asks for an Email ID that was obtained by payment for the software
In other words, the Software was not activated
I restarted the software as recommended above (3) by the AlgoLogic Team - still software is not activated
I uninstalled five times and reinstalled without any success
Uninstalled permanently. And had wasted probably an hour of my time.

Running Windows 7 ultimate 32 bits
Downloaded a small sized setup, installed flawlessly. Program is already
activated (no e-mail required, no serial pasting = 1 thumbs up)
The program itself is very good if not excellent, tried extracting images from a PDF, process is very fast and result images excellent quality.
One negative observation is the presence of a direct-link on the right hand side of the program window indicating a free upgrade but when you follow the link you find that you have to pay, so how is it a free upgrade?
Overall this is an excellent program for PDF buffs at least from my personal point of view...

Tried to delete one page from a PDF file. There is such an option in the "Split" group of actions. The file is a national newspaper which is available online free of charge.
(By the way, you might want to get the "delete page(s)" option out of the "Split" group in the next version... just a thought)
Well, a nasty bug emerged almost immediately. The resulting file contained several empty pages spread along the resulting PDF (which obviously weren't in the source file).
Sorry guys, you need to continue to debug your product. Uninstalled. Thumbs down.

Well, here you see, another website that is afraid to reveal the master behind the mask.

A company that stands in for public service and hides their identity is - well, how shall I put it (?)... repulsive....

I don't have doubt that the software will do its job.
The price tag seems a little high, though.
A $9 would have done just nicely.

Their product range is unique in fact.
Though, I was hanging out at their website and asked myself if I would ever need it.
I'm sure their is clientele out there for this.

take care
