I use https://tools.pdf24.org/en/ for just about everything PDF and it's free without limits.
On their edit page is the 'pencil' which can be set to any width and any 'erase' color, (to match the background).
Once you have 'covered' what you want erased you can just download it as is.
I say 'cover' because that is what a majority of these tools do!
You might want to look around at the other tools.

mrclose, you did not comment PDF Eraser!
By the way, I use pdf24tools too, but you CAN NOT use it offline, hah?
Best regards

mrclose, Great share, will definitely give it a try. Thanks. How is the PDF OCR quality with the scanned PDFs?

"PDF Eraser is a free Windows application "
"The program is available for $29.95,"
The second is, therefore, only if you don't have Windows.— ???

If it really adds text to a PDF that should be part of its title since adding is more important than removing.

Dan, +1
GAOTD offers WinPDFEditor at times (I have it from here). It does very good job in filling in a non-editable PDF by adding texts (say, to a form; you can also add, for instance, your signature if you have an image of it).

Thanks for providing it.

Perhaps someone can tell us what the difference is?

Someone responded via email-The free version will add watermarks.
If that is the case. then it is NOT FREE. Am I missing something?

webeye, Pro is same program but without the watermark ~ https://www.pdferaser.net/register.html

James, Great, that makes me NOT download this software. Any free SW that adds watermark should not be advertised as free at all. I say no to any company that does it in their free version. Therefore, although this GAOTD version will not add any watermarks, I will NEVER download it.

This is not a PDF editor, it is a "white out" poured on the text, you have just created an additional layer on the file and you must save it first then open the same file and create additional layer of text on top of it and save it again, that's it. Anyone with a real PDF editor can remove the added layers and see the original text, in another words, it is a faux-pa (fake) eraser.

Mike, It depends what tool you use. You have the choice of three "layering" tool buttons labeled Small, Medium and Large.
Those are used to only "mask out" an area. What is underneath that layer is still available. I've tried it with a web page address, and I could click on the link, even though it was covered by a layer.
The permanent delete approach is to use the other button labeled "Delete Area", where you circled out (square in fact) an area. Once you save your document, that area will (should) be deleted, and not available using other tools like Adobe.
Hopes this info will help other interested users!

Jackie, Great info, doesn't matter in most cases though. If I had to fill in a non-editable PDF form that would need texts to be added, the recipient would not care about the "covered up" areas in most cases. I have done it several times. But yes, the "delete area" button is something that should be used.

Impressive. Have you considered adding a small brush or pencil size removal tool. Program worked well on portions of a pdf image and a smaller removal tool would be a bonus. The area colour match is a great feature.

Does it really remove the deleted content from the pdf or it only covers unwanted things with background-colored rectangles?

Henry, it covers with a layer. I just used it on a pdf file with selectable text. I "erased" a good part. Then, I opened this file with Adobe Reader, I selected all and then copied to the clipboard. When I pasted to notepad I could see everything, even the erased part.

At least I tried the erase tool. In fact, as James says, the "Delete Area" tool seems to really remove.
But You might want to test it Yourself.

Easily installed and activated. Does what it says. I recommend to add fonts and colors for the text addition on the pdf document. I liked this program.
