Password Folder Pro 2.4.1 was available as a giveaway on March 29, 2025!
Password Folder is a Windows lightweight folder password protection software tool adds password protection to a folder in an instant. It simplifies the operation steps and provides the most direct folder protection process, so that even novice users can get started quickly. The best feature of Password Folder is that it is extremely fast and the encryption speed is not limited by the size of the folder. Even a folder of several gigabytes can be locked and restored in a flash. It is perfectly suitable to protect folders on the local computer. No one would be able to access protected folders without the password.
Besides, once the folder is protected by Password Folder, it cannot be copied to other drive or sent via the internet unless you decrypt. Password Folder also adds a context menu shortcut so that users can protect a regular folder by a right-mouse click easily.

Password Folder is a small app -- <10MB -- that once run, including the portable version, adds itself to Windows Explorer right-click context menu. That and an uninstall key are all that are added to the registry when the app's installed. The portable version adds a single file to the hard disk, ProgramData\pfonce.ini, while the installed version adds the app's folder to Program Files (x86), and 3 different 1KB files to Users\ [UserName]\ AppData\ Roaming\. The portable version will not activate with the given key, but will recognize that the installed version has been activated, and will be unlocked. When you protect a folder a restricted access folder is created, C:\ pfdocument.. , which holds the protected but unencrypted files. When you protect a folder a new file takes its place with the same name as the now protected folder and a file name extension of .pff . Double clicking that .pff file brings up a small dialog to enter the password -- once the correct password is entered the original folder is recreated using the files stored in pfdocument.. . Whether it contains any files or not that folder will remain in place, and because its protected you can't delete it. That folder is visible in Windows Explorer, using the same or a different copy of Windows, though it is not visible after booting to WinPE, so it *might* not be visible if you boot to a Windows-based alternative with a command prompt, e.g., utility or backup app USB sticks. However, booting to a Live Mint Linux XFCE ISO I could access pfdocument.. like any other folder, and copy the contents to another folder. I could of course also delete the folder if I wanted to. I had protected a small app, MyDefrag, and after copying the files out of the protected folder and booting back to Win11 that copy of the app worked fine.

1. The application locks the folder as expected.
2. The application interferes with Windows Explorer and prevents user from using functions of Windows Explorer i.e. editing file names, using mouse right click features, copy/paste, deleting files, etc.
3. I cannot recommend using.

After protecting a folder with a password and then opening it with a password is it necessary to relock the folder again or does it lock itself when you close the program?Thank you

Nice little software, but as aways it comes with notice.
The data inside the folder is not encrypted, so if you can gain access by other means, it has no protection, no files are encrypted, only the access to it are blocked. If you forget the password, it will become big headache to restore the data, because no copy or transfer to other drives is permitted.

Several of my computers run both Zorin OS (based on Ubuntu Linux) and Windows 11. When running Windows, I cannot access the Zorin partition. But when I use Zorin, I can access the Windows partitions (both system and data partitions), when Windows is not running.I will later today test if I can access aWindows folder, protected with the giveaway when running Zorin OS. If that is the case, anybody who has access to your computer, can use a Zorin OS USB stick to get access to ALL your Windows files.
I used this trick several years ago to rescue the photographs on a friend's crashed Windows computer. Because the disk itself was still intact, I recovered all his photographs.

gergn, As this laptop only has Windows 11, I tested the portable version of the giveaway and protected a data folder. Regretfully, I could not activate that with the giveaway key. Then, I used my Zorin OS USB stick to see if I could see my data folder. But Zorin did NOT reveal the original data. I only saw the .pff-file that contains a short encryption key. So, my data seem safe.
I did note a smal bug. On my desktop I have a shortcut to the data folder. I encrypted the shortcut instead of the data folder, using the right-click menu. That worked. But when I double-clicked the shortcut icon to get my data back, nothing happened. I had to go to the folder containing the .pff file and double-click that file. Then the window opened, and I could enter my encryption key.
All in all, the giveaway works as it should.

gergn (and all),
It allways creates a new folder with a sub-folder: THEY hold all original files.
Only windows (without another, smarter filemanager [most otf them are smarter..!!]) is not able to "see" and open that folder (with me: the "new" folder is named beginning "pdf...", ending with two dots).
The seemingly(!) scrambles "old" folder ist just a fake: folder icon, but not the original content (see my first line aboe!)
Other filemanager can see that new folder (which is hidden attributed, perhaps proteted, too... never mind becaus has noo influence...) and open it, open each file, copy/delete/alter/... all files, because they are completely unchanged.
Final line: this gives almost no protection. took me 1 ro 5 sec. to find tha out

gergn, just in case you are not aware if you modify the NTFS folder from linux by even accessing a file to read it then IF you have Previous versions and restore point equivalent enabled then the VSS databases will be inconsistent as linux does not maintain the VSS databases on it's NTFS writes. If you don't use VSS under windows 11 then no worries :-)
