Alexa Bennett,
Hi,
I am most delighted to have been introduced to oMage Commander at GiveAwayoftheDay.

It may replace XPlorer2 as THE file manager I used every session!

How may one activate the "TREE" view? That is, branches of folders/subfolders?

If "TREE" view is not built in, is there a plugin?

May TotalCommander pulgins be used?

Your kind advice and prompt advice will be greatly appreciated!

Have a joyful weekend!

Cordially,
Hon Kong

AR, OK, found it. Who puts app menus on the System menu?!

Entered my name and code from the email (copy-paste). Doesn't work.

Do we really need to educate each and every giveaway participant that when we tell them Registration is not working, there really is a problem, and they are wasting time?

AR, FYI, I have read in 3 different places so far, from the vendor or GAOTD, to put your email in the name field, or the registration won't work. Easy to miss when one is skimming, but at least they tried to warn us. ;^)

I have already said why this program's concept is seriously misdirected. Now, from other users, I read the following complaints :

- There's no tree view.
- There's no proper help offered, either within the product or online.

If this is true, then the program is totally useless. Il have checked the publisher's website, and under "Support", there's... absolutely nothing. Except an email address. It's supposed to be a support address, however the site says it's there only for "comments and suggestions". So, one-way communication, not two-way.

The online FAQ is minimal. There's a "Features" pages which is quite developed, to the point of looking like a quick tutorial. However, it's not a user manual or knowledge base, by a long, long way. There's no user forum.

Slick site, flashy software with too many colours, but nothing suggesting this is a tool a serious power user should invest time and effort into getting to learn.

For those who can't live without "tree" view, try XYPlorer. The latest version has just been launched. You may download it from its official home site or here: http://j.gs/8lr7

No installation required, simply extract it to anywhere.

Power users may find scripting support makes life easier!

In the screenshot, it says "31 finded in 6 files". It should be "31 found in 6 files". Not sure how such a simple thing was missed by the testing team and released.

Needs tabbed folders in each pane.

The ability to have 6 - 8 tabbed folders in each pane allows switching from one folder to another to be incredibly fast and easy.

I couldn't find this feature in the program.

As usual, by following the instructions in the README file, I had NO trouble downloading, installing, and registering this program. ((do get rather annoyed when I'm trying to find out how people like a program, but have to scan past 20 paragraphs of "How do I register this program?" because they didn't bother to read the readme.}} ANYWAY, this is a nice clear program. I like the options available for the color contrast on the pages, and I am also very impressed by the number of functions available here. I very much like the split view. I am also extremely impressed that I was able to load it onto my main computer and a thumb drive - no problems at all. Thanks so much, GAOTD and Pylonos!

oMega Commander is a very versatile file manager with a large amount of functions.
However the help.chm and online help is sorely lacking to help use and customize this application.

I tried to use Software Informer for suggenstions; but I could not get it to work for me.

Below are some suggestions:

- Allow to open more than 2 panels.
- Allow to customize color palette for the UI.
- Screen Capture tool to capture the display in each panel with scrolling if necessary.
- Actions => Copy/save file list should at least include the size and date.
- List Detailed View option to be able to select additional columns like display of date created and date modified (and other types of attributes similar to Windows explorer)
- Ability to rename multiple selected files.
- Need more detailed help.chm file.
- Ability to easily add your own search engine under the "Web" menu selection
or to change the search engines listed [ie to ixquick.com]
- Ability to connect to a secure ftp site to upload or download files
- Ability to connect to a directory of a drive on a remote host on another network
- Explorer style tree view is really needed as mentioned by others.

Thanks for the giveaway

DESPITE doing EXACTLY what I should do, (I've downloaded hundreds of free software from here! and I NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM!!!) I get this: Sorry, the license key is incorrect!
It CAME FROM THE STUPID COMPANY! I did not make this registration number!
I see several people stating that they had to put their email address into the name field - I DID!!!
Why would you let us have this application and NOT LET US REGISTER IT??????????????
DUMB!

I would say, do not install this application!

How to you copy the full path of a file or folder with native file managers in Windows and Linux?

Can you do ALT+C?

How about showing all folder sizes along with file sizes?

I haven't used native file managers since I started enjoying these and other features.

Installed and registered,no problems,Portable,as well.Install runs fine as long as you follow directions reiterated here in comments section, particularly enter email address for registration.Again,READ INSTRUCTIONS.Two things that strike me as a good sign are: program, upon install, asks you if you want it included at Windows startup(which I almost NEVER want),and it is portable.Looks like a welcome addition to my file explorers, haven't given it a test spin yet,am in a rush.Tree view is not necessarily a beal-buster,for me.Thanks,GOTD,and Pylonos !!!

The "Move" and "Copy" command work backwards from normal. Which is odd and I haven't found out how to make that work in the normal way.

Is there a way?

When I drag a file (on the same drive) to a new location I am moving it normally, not copying it. Having to press the shift key is odd and I wish it would function like other file managers in this regard.

Bryce Tomlinson,

Tested again and it still functions as I previously explained. So it does NOT work in the normal established way and I've used dozens of file managers so that's why it is so odd. Just sayin'.

This software isn't going to replace my file/folder explorers any time soon:
- No tree view
- No file preview -- quick view shows file in hexadecimal format -- rarely needed
- Cannot include file extension in file name

That said, the GUI interface is quite impressive; for example, see copy file, filter.

I have researched this program in the past, and I have been put off by two things : its downright offensive colours in the user interface, and its (seemingly) too important possibilities for customisation.

I wish more developers would understand that less is more, and that throwing everything and the kitchen sink at hapless users is not the way to help them achieve whatever they are trying to do.

I'm sure some people might say : why don't you change the colours to suit you, that's customisable also, but that's my point : don't offer a bad product that has to be repaired by the customer before being usable.

Take example in Windows 7 Explorer : it's clean, minimal and beautiful. Granted, it lacks some possibilites, and that's where alternative file managers are useful. But don't spoil the broth by paiting it in multiple colours, which are too many to begin with, ugly by themselves to boot, and not playing along well with each other.

If you want to get an idea of what's a palette of colours in harmony with each other, see here :

http://htmlcolorcodes.com/color-picker

Also, what's wrong with black and white, plus maybe one or two colours ? That's the way people read books for centuries. What makes you think it was a bad idea ?

Finally, a software developer must take sides. He must chose how he wants his software to be, because, after careful research, he thinks he has built a better mousetrap. Then let the user be the judge. Throwing everything at the user's face and telling him this is a DIY project, make it as you like, does not cut the mustard.

Reply   |   Comment by Clairvaux  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

Clairvaux,
Please do not think me argumentative I am not you and you are not me. Some say "potayto" and some say "potaaato". I personally like options and I appreciate that you don't. This software is probably meant more for me than you. You will probably wish to stick with the Microsoft version. Just sayin'.

Reply   |   Comment by commonman  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Clairvaux,
Programs like this are for users who want more options, features and powers. Power users, if you will. Casual users who get put off by options and customization wouldn't be looking for alternative file managers in the first place, as Windows Explorer is enough for these people. The whole point of programs like this is customization and features. So I have to say that you're wrong, there's absolutely nothing wrong with offering choice and customization in programs like this. You're only complaining because this program isn't for you.

Reply   |   Comment by Enrique Tassin  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Enrique Tassin, I totally agree with you. You saved me time from typing the whole thing. In my opinion as far as the previous comment about windows explorer goes it is like shopping in a dollar store for lets say....cosmetics (not that I use any!!!) vs say MACYS. The last usable windows explorer for me was the XP flavor. Since then with every version some usability was taken out and now I find having to make 2-3 more clicks to accomplish the same task as back then. Not to mention the quick icon customization of the window bar menu. Am I wrong?

Reply   |   Comment by soft user  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Enrique Tassin,

You completely missed my point.

1. I'm a power user.

2. I use a (quite expensive) third-party replacement for Windows Explorer. It's called Directory Opus. Look it up. It has a manual more than 1 000 pages long. It's extremely customisable, by the way.

3. Although I'm quite satisfied with Directory Opus, I'm in the market for yet other alternatives to Windows Explorer, because I'm always on the hunt for innovative and brilliant software.

Now you can re-read my comment, and try to understand why it was foolish of you to pretend I was wrong, instead of just saying you held a different opinion. And maybe trying to explain why you like Omega Commender, which would have been more helpful to others than your puerile attempt at a put-down. That is, if you were not just trolling, and you really have an informed opinion on Omega Commender.

Reply   |   Comment by Clairvaux  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Enrique Tassin,
For users who don't want features not offered by native file managers of any OS, why bother to try other file managers?

These people are like Trump who intends to wall USA and expect its neighbour to foot the bill. Try doing this with your house neghbours!

It is very difficult to find your files without tree structure.
Under documents folder, I have over 100 sub folders and
can not get to them easy since there are over 1000 files in each sub-folder.
There are lots of free and portable software that does fantastic job for me.
I'll skip this one, it looks to colorful and childish and how many people edit

Could anybody provide a comprehensive comparison report between this GAOTD software and the famous free and regularly updated Total Commander by Ghisler with a lot of very useful plugins. I read that oMegaCommender does not offer a tree view (which in my opinion disqualifies any software provider of file managers today regardless of whether this feature is used permanently or occasionally). I read this GAOTD has problems with proper sorting of files (how about sorting folders by name, date, size, etc.)? Are any useful plugins available for free? And how about customisation of the interface, shortcuts Etc. etc.?

Just for clarification (direct copy/paste from Total Commander website)...

Total Commander for Windows is a Shareware (demo version) program. This means that you can test it for a period of 30 days. After testing the program, you must either order the full version, or delete the program from your harddisk.

You can now either order just a license key by e-mail (online or from local reseller), or a CD by air mail (online or by mail/fax).
The price is 37.- Euro (plus VAT in Europe) or equivalent for just the key online. The payment processor is in the EU and handles EU VAT for us.
The price is 42.- US Dollars for a CD by air mail (not including any VAT, will be charged by customs when you receive the CD).
The price is 37.- Euro or 40.- Swiss Francs for orders by invoice (companies). The delivery with invoice is made exclusively on CD by air mail.

Marek,
sorry, but TC is not freeware. It's shareware!

Mikik, what you wrote is not quite true. In the free option all features are available and the only disadvantage is that when you open the software you need to click once to open the programme. The click does not invoke any internet transfer of data or other system operations which many other free software pieces do. And when you buy the TC all you get is that you’ll be free that disadvantage. I do not see this disadvantage a great problem as I open the software when I start working on my machine and it runs seamlessly until I close my comp.

Needless to say, by saying that I do not intend, nor do I want to instigate anybody to use TC, but simply want to know whether the GAOTD offers any features superb to TC so that I should replace TC with the GAOTD.

Marek, Is it true.
1) Registration allows storage * .ini files, settings TC
2) It is good for decent pay SW author
I use a TC (paid :-)) for many years now - since version about 3 or 4. It is my basic software for managing files, FTP, etc .. Still like to try it for free :-) OC. Try the same thing :-)

BlkCrowe, thank you for providing a convincing proof of my error and sorry for apparently misleading info.

Ghisler must have changed his policies applicable to new free users. I got TC free version a few years ago from Ghisler’s site and since then have been using it (and updating) withou any problems.

Again, thanks and sorry.

My fault I have not checked their site before posting my question, but my question is still valid.

Marek, It's not true. SHRWR it was certainly back in 1996 (test it for a period of 30 days). Only the author (except when running) when its use no longer use restrictions. Or are you just downloaded a crack version.
The question - if someone uses TC, probably did not need to OC, and vice versa :-). So maybe just authors :-). I would be very interested, but I'm skeptical.

Mikik, I would love to answer your question as precisely as possible, but I do not think I can (what is OC?) Insread, all I can do is to tell my story: I started using TC many, many years ago (I think as soon as as it appeared on the net) and I had their licence then (it was really inexpensive). I registered to the TC mailing list and forum. Then I moved to another location and left my comp to my brother. I bought another comp and downloaded free version from TC (not a crack!!!) and since then I’ve been using it. You made me alarmed that I may have overlooked the 30-day period and am using it illegally. I need to check it and if so, I’ll purchase the licence as I hate exploiting softare to the detriment of its decent author who I think Ghisler is. The fact is that even if that period had lapsed nothing changed in the functionality of the programme. Editable ini file is there and I can modify it. Plugins and other features work seamlessly. May be the shareware statement by Ghisler is intended to impose a merely moral obligation on the user and is not an actual warning that the software will not work past the trial period (the latter policy being commonly used by many programmers).

Thanks for the head-up.

Marek, if you have to click 'one, two or three' to start TC, you are using the shareware version. The need to click one of those goes away with the registered version. It is possible to use it 'forever' without paying and update it when new versions are released. Christian Ghisler seems to be of the opinion that if you like it, you will buy it, and doesn't cripple it except for the need of one click at startup.

I've had a couple of hours with oMega and like it a lot, but after 20 some years with Total Commander, I am unlikely to change. The lack of a tree command wouldn't bother me as it does some, as I have used it maybe twice in all the years of owning TC. I'll hang on to oMega and use it occasionally. Who knows, maybe it *will* be possible to teach this old dog new tricks.

Marek, The license to TC's lifetime. It should not be a problem when sending mail to author :-).
OC = OMEGA Commander ;-)

Dear Martin, thank you for your reply and explanations.

I rush to pay Christian Ghisler right now what I have owed him for years. I really feel shame that I have misinterpred Christian Ghisler’s generosity!

And Christian should be considered an exemplary and great person to be praised for his genuinely user-frienly approach and excellent product, as opposed to those hords of software con developers who claim to be professional and user-friendly whilst all they can do is to drain customer pockets.
Cheers,
Marek

When I click on the Home (circle) button, all I can see is the drop-shadow of the menu I should be seeing.

Any ideas?

For registration, the email address is CASE SENSITIVE. Try entering it in upper case. That's what finally worked for me.

I am using XYplorer 17 for these kind of job.
I am looking for a nice File Manager because Win7 doesn't separate the folders once it is open; like it does in Win xp and Win 10 sucks big time (i feel handicapped using Win 10). So i think it desperately needs a file manager all Win 7, 8 & 10. But this file manager isn't that impressive, it doesn't preview file and folder's in list and doesn't sorts them with similar .ext.
I had some hopes for this software. Plus it is 4 MB bigger than XYplorer.

Many people are being misled by the registration process asking for your NAME. It should read EMAIL ADDRESS.
This is probably why the code is being rejected. I was fooled too!

installed without any problem is portable personal licence is for 5 pc's, i prefer a tree view. The interface uses topbar to identify the location of where you are. needs some time to play with but it looks good

I went to the website and have a hard time understanding some things. this sentence was there, copy and pasted:

How to say the developers, Omega specially designed in such a way as to act a certain control center for synergies between different applications on the PC.
