Vovsoft OCR Reader is an image to text converter program that allows you to extract text from PNG, JPEG, TIFF, WEBP, and BMP files using Optical Character Recognition. This software is basically a text reader from image.

While there are many OCR tools available online, some prefer a dedicated desktop tool instead. The best part of the program is that the conversion is done completely offline. You are the only controller of your private data. No image file is sent to internet in any case.

This small and lightweight OCR tool can easily digitize image files and scanned documents on your laptop or desktop computer. It can scan documents using TWAIN and WIA scanner protocols. This application utilizes Tesseract OCR engine, which supports more than 100 languages. In order to increase accuracy, it uses a neural network (LSTM) based OCR engine which provides line recognition, but also can recognize character patterns.

You can create a selection box to recognize a specific area in your document. To do this, all you have to do is click on the image and drag the mouse to create a rectangle. Thus, the program will recognize only the region you selected. This will provide a more accurate conversion and speed up the process.

I can't get it to run on a WIN7 machine.

Downloaded & installed per instructions. Couldn't be faster or easier. That much appreciated. However, when I run the program, no matter what I try the OCR on, including their samples, it zipped through in a fraction of a second, then I got a pop up box that says "WARNING optical character recognition failed!"

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but with so few options, it is hard to imagine what that could be.

Update. Even after multiple restarts / reboots, same result. Have tried on all the samples. All I get is the same "WARNING" pop-up. Has anyone else had this result? I'd really like to make this work.

That is by far the quickest, easiest giveaway to download, install and register, that I have ever had.
No jumping through hoops or waiting at all!
Well done on that.

Vovsoft is an excellent organization. It was started about 10 years ago by several young computer experts who lived in Turkey. They offered a few producets only, and since has expanded to am guessing a hundred or more, all good ones. They are a major player in the software business. Have respect for these folks.

It seems to have a lot of trouble with multiple sizes of text in the same image, such as movie posters, which notoriously use multiple sizes of text, often on the same "line".
Lots of 'artifact' characters are generated.
This gets worse in other languages. Chinese (both), for instance, produces complete gibberish. Same goes for Thai and Vietnamese.
Sorta' gave up... didn't even try the Hindi.
I did try selecting small areas of the image and did get better results...
Would be nice if it had an optional auto correct to cut down on nonsensical words... I'm sure not a lot of users will be trying to detect 1337 5p34k and the results should reflect such

I do recommend a stand alone OCR for must have text

I have not tried this one but it is Lifetime so give it a try, of the seven free options that I tried six were lacking or had a big learning curve (that I was not willing to learn). I have not used the seventh in a long time because ~google lens~ has almost no learning curve and it is fast by comparison to the others.

You can scan images to convert them to text. The save options of txt, pdf, doc all do not work.

The program also extracts text from PDF files.

OCR Reader 2.8 was available as a giveaway on March 23, 2024! https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ocr-reader-2-8/
The additional language selection from the default English is a little obscure involving two sets of menus that pop up when you press the globe button and then More. Vovsoft does have a portable (read semi-portable as the registration data is stored in the host windows registry) version that will run from a USB stick you just need to activate the license on all machines you want to use it on before the new activation time window expires as it is giveaway of the DAY not month! It was received relatively well on previous giveaway, you can read the comments there while we await new comments to percolate through here.
