Norton Sonar blocked setup.exe from running and deleted it as a security risk. If and when the problem is fixed, could GOTD offer it again?
Also, to GOTD: Please put instructions in the "Rate it" box telling people what factors to take into consideration when rating the program AND what factors NOT to use, such as whether a rater himself needs it or whether the rater would have preferred something else to have been offered.

Yes Sammie (comment 29.) ... in a way thats true... to install OpenOffice only for the single purpose of creating pdf files would be indeed a bit of an overkill. The thought i had in mind was, that a lot people possibly have OpenOffice as standard office software on their productive machines. At least those who didnt invest in MS Office....
If that is the case, then installing extra software for pdf additionally would be not needed, because of the pdf export function in it. And also the creation with all different sort of printable media would normally need Adobes Acrobat software... which is not the case if you have OO :-) anyway.. have a great day :-)

I downloaded "novaPDF Lite 7.6" and ran the setup program but my
norton internet security program stopped the setup program and said
that it had done some things it shouldn't??? and that it had deleted
the program...

I have been downloading and running your stuff for several years and
this is the first time I have ever had any problem from my AV on any
of them.

I don't know what it is wrong exactly but you might want to take a
look at novaPDF Lite 7.6 and see if there is anything that might
set off warning bells in Antivirus programs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For all of you who don't want to set this novaPDF as default printer, just uncheck it at the first installation. If you already check it and then you don't like novaPDF to be your default printer, just uninstall it and re-install with unchecked option to make novaPDF as default printer. Sounds hard to do..?? Someone has marked this behaviour as "hi-jacking", even a malware. This nice software is not a malware! Your "hi-jacking" term is the company policy that you can accept or deny it at first installation of novaPDF. Don't be a LAZY PEOPLE! That is the real bad behaviour!

Nothing against this program, but won't download it because there are so many very competent free alternatives that apparently do more. I've been using PDF Exchange Viewer for years and have been very happy with its flexibility - haven't tried the pro version. Recently I installed Nitro (free version) and so far I like it a lot - Again, haven't tried the paid version.

Always appreciate the opportunity to acquire freebies here, though! Thanks!!

I will never understand how a company can put out something like this and try to charge for it when there are already many free alternatives (which usually do the job just as well, if not better.)

In this case, the only software I'd ever recommend is CutePDF. I find it to be the fastest, most reliable PDF printer out there. You can get an easy installer for it at ninite.com or visit CutePDF.com for more info or a direct download.

RE #6 (from Chris Locke) "CutePDF is also free, but has a Windows 95 interface for saving in Windows 7, so is effectively useless."
I'm not sure what you mean. I run Windows 7 with CutePDF and it works just fine. I run 4 computer repair shops, we put CutePDF on all of the computers that get reloaded (and any refurbs we are selling.) We've never had any complaints. We've installed it on XP, Vista & 7, it always works! You might consider un-installing the version you have and re-installing the latest version. I suggest http://ninite.com for downloading & installing any software they offer that you might want!

2. If you rely on free software, GOTD is not the place for you.

#10 If I see something that people are charging money for, something that has dozens of free alternatives that do the same thing, as in the case of the software today, they get a thumbs down. If I think the price they want (because even if it's free today if we like it it will have to be purchased someday), is unreasonably high as with one item a few years back, which they wanted $500 for and had several free alternatives, it gets a thumbs down. I suggest you get over it. The voting system here, even though unnecessarily cruel sometimes, has a purpose.

#31 You, you can select which pages you want to print from the PDF. This link http://tiny.cc/xpdbgw is to a snapshot I took of the NovaPDF lite7 print dialog that shows how you select the pages. I've been using it since it was given away last time. I too have several pdf printers on my computer and this is the one I generally use.

I installed NovaPDF Lite and found that it does exactly what it says. The app provides the capability to print as a pdf as well as allowing you to convert an existing document to pdf. While it is no better than some of the freeware/open source applications, it is still a useful tool. I did not have the problem of changing the default printer nor did I find a toolbar installed in MS Office applications.

NovaPDF Lite vs. Nitro PDF Printer - while I have a free version of Nitro PDF Printer, I am unable to find this on the web now. The free version that I have doesn't compare well to NovaPDF as it does not allow you to merge pdf. While moderately configurable, it wasn't quite as flexible or intuitive as NovaPDF.

NovaPDF Lite vs. CutePDF - this program has long been one of the most popular pdf printers. However, I found, in addition to the short coming in Nitro PDF Printer; I was unable to fully configure the output nor was support for pdf/a was offered.

While I would rate NovaPFD Lite ahead of the two products, I evaluated, it still cost $19.95 for those unable to take advantage of today's free offer. The price seems a little high compared considering that there are so many no-cost options available. Perhaps NovaPDF should consider offering the Lite version for free as a catalyst to enticing user to purchase the more robust versions of their software.

There are a bunch of these (free) PDF printers around. This is the
one I've used for the past couple years, and it has been more than
satisfactory. Otherwise, I would have tried some of the others.

http://www.exp-systems.com/
http://www.exp-systems.com/pdfredirect/downloads.htm

The feature I mainly use is its ability to capture webpages and save them as PDF. The "printer" part is really pseudo-printer: it intercepts the output and saves to a file. Sometimes a browser does not seem to want to show me ALL of a page for SAVE or PRINT purposes -- for whatever reason -- as the browser's 'Print Preview' will reveal. In many of those cases, PDF Redirect will grab the whole thing. If not, I have to resort to more geeky workarounds.

I have used the prior version for a long time and find it valuable for getting a replacement for an online purchase, I can just print off a copy of the sales receipt, or copy the pdf document and send it by email.

Installing was easy and no trouble on my Win 7 x64, Home Premium.

As to the comment about Open Office being an alternative.
It would be overkill for the purpose of this piece of software as it does not allow you to selectively install say, the word processor only.

This is unacceptable.

Though I can easily reset the default printer. I don't like this type of software that tries to take over your computer.

I have quite a few free ones on my computer,.. all good.
Best one to get was PDFill,..http://www.pdfill.com/
Free writer and free tools,.. including being able to join pdfs.
The actual Editor is only $19.99,.. which I couldn't resist,
and the best price of any of those things,... and it works great!
Also have Nitro and PDFExchnage lite, http://www.tracker-software.com/ This one lets you grab a page as an image,... wonderful!! ALSO,... if windows is set up with it,.. when you are looking for a PDF in particular, its easier to find because if you look in a window set to large icons,.. makes a picture of each one!!!
Thats good for me, because I am always "printing" to PDF with net sites, news, etc. It also has an OCR button,.. I was startled when it did just GREAT with a "scanned" book (no real text,..)
Bullzip on my other computer, works great.
I'm thinking if Nova gives the basic printer free, they'll be more liable to sell the extended version because people get used to whatever they use. Just a thought,...

Before blindly praising this product, a look at comparison features will show the product's limitations. Not available in this version (among other, but these ones really count):
- Detect URLs/local files and convert to PDF links
- Image and text compression

If you want small files (a very basic requirement for PDF output) and clickable links, you'll have to get another PDF generator. Ditto if you want to use the software in your company and share the PDF printer (GOTD's license and novaPDF's EULA are clear enough on this point).

The only positive aspect I see in today's GOTD, is that a home user who don't know already about PDF printer (is it possible?) may be tempted to google (or search GOTD website and read the comments, e.g. this offer) for free alternatives and will discard novaPDF as a [good] candidate for the purpose.

Maureen, it seems you are NOT here to "try out" programs merely out of interest, but to get your hostilty out of the way that you didn't like what I said. Your trolling question if I tried the program shows you didn't pay attention what I wrote. I said the program is easy to use. It doesn't matter to me if YOU like the program or not, neither am I interested how many votes go up or down for you. I speak in general that the voting system sucks.

As for novaPDF, I tried other software from the Romanian development company in the past. They write good programs that are very useful.

again, thanks for the giveaway

From the Nova's Website "novaPDF has three major editions: Lite, Standard and Professional. novaPDF Professional has all the features enabled, while novaPDF Lite and Standard have very limited functionality."

Would have preferred to be given the opportunity to review Professional version instead of the lite version with its extremely limited functionality.

(Bullzip is FREEWARE and fully functional)

Ok, i am not goin to critc on novaPDF because i am not testing it.
Why ? Well did anyone ever notice, that OpenOffice can easy be taken as a full blown PDF editor? As any good office program it allows you to create any sort of document from scratch. Text writing with good correction features, image integration, charts, tables, vector graphics, 3D graphics, etc... Basically anything you can think of can be done with it. If you are finished creating, you simply use its PDF exporting funktion and you are done. Loading of existing PDF documents and its manipulation, is something i never tried because i simply dont need that. So after all i can only recommend to have a look at OpenOffice. You might be amazed about its capabilities..
Oh and not to forget, OpenOffice is completely free as well :-)
I posted this here because it seems to be a tradition to mention free alternatives on GAOTD.
Besides that i must say, you guys from the GAOTD team do a wonderful job. Every now and then i find real software gems here ! All the best for the future. You guys rock !!

I tried this progam several months ago, downloaded from their site; and I noticed it created a new toolbar inside Word and Excel, which I could not turn off permanently - each time I restarted Word or Excel, their toolbar would appear floating again, which was extremely annoying, so I deleted it very next day (which was not a big loss - I was not satisfied with output quality anyway - very blurred letters and especially images).

Now I see comment #3 reported similar behaviour, it sets itself as default printer, so it seems that hijacking certain features is official policy of this company. So, it's a big no-no for me - program that hijacks some features of your computer is nothing but a malware!

The free variant "CleverPrint 2012 Free" can create PDFs too.
It's main purpose is ink saving.
It's a virtual printer driver, with lots of additional printing options.
Downloaded setup offers 30 days full version (e.g. Prints 1, 2, 4 or 8 pages on one sheet of paper).
After 30 days stripped down to free version with:
- Preview area (WYSIWYG)!!!!!
- Conversion to PDF!!!!!
- Removal of unnecessary pages!!!!!!
...

Details in English or either in German (if needed, hit corresponding flag):
http://www.abelssoft.net/cleverprint.factsheet.php

I'm using a giveaway variant from German pc magazine CHIP, situated between free and pro version. If I want to save more ink (with less quality) I'm using "Drucken und sparen" for less than 10€/$ which additional allows to print in lighter colours (as Fineprint does for much more money but without the cited additional features).

i use dopdf free which looks exactly like novapdf lite feature-wise.
to me, bullzip (also free) is better because you can encrypt/protect the PDF that will be created. you can also do many other things for free like watermark, merge, etc.
if you want split/merge of the PDF created, you can use pdfsam (free).

NitroPDF. Free and is a PDF creator as well as a lightweight PDF viewer. Allows PDF files to be appended very easily. No easy way of editing PDF files though (eg, deleting pages) which would be a great feature.

I've used the open-source PDF Creator in the past, but it hasn't got the best user interface, especially if you want to combine PDFs.
CutePDF is also free, but has a Windows 95 interface for saving in Windows 7, so is effectively useless.

As mentioned above, this program annoyingly resets the default printer to itself. These sort of actions are unnecessary and just cry out for the program to be uninstalled.

It seems to work ok, though not as easy as other PDF creators I've tried. Registration was difficult to find. I eventually found it by going to the printers, double clicking on the NovaPDF icon, going to Printer -> Properties -> About -> Register. Then, I could enter the name and key given in the GAOTD text file. Finally, it seems to force making it the default printer every time I use it. This is annoying. I looked in preferences for some way to disable this printer-hijacking behavior, but cannot find a way to stop it. It's not that hard to right click back on the printer I want to be my default. But, the program should not force that change.

Not sure why the negative rating feedback. Maybe because of the possibility its another PDF software? I think the point of the rating is if the software is good or bad; not that you don't want the software. Loaded it, followed the instructions and its working fine. It does what it says it does.
