this one of the very bad software i ever come across, it is taking too much time to index and search, not at all user friendly, waste of time...

James buddy, what's this man, if you have faced an error, you could simply contact their support team. you wrote the entire error here which no use to anybody. Instead I suggest you contact them. This may be cause due to any reason, bad installation or anything. By writing here they will not be able to investigate the error and resolve it.

Kev., and they took my comment off yesterday because I said Agent Ransack was better....

Great, I have been using MSTech products for a while now and their support is amazing. No matter what they reply shortly to any question or ticket support. Nice to see them back here with another product, which comes handy on daily basis for most of us.

Thanks guys, also thanks to Giveaway of the Day

What a nice giveaway, I was using their basic version and would like to try their pro version. But, I have what I wanted. Same as usual, everything is at hand, user friendly interface and easy to use.
Thanks to GODT and MSTech

I installed this on a Windows 7 32bit OS and tried searching on a text file and it ran for awhile giving 7 pages of matches then two errors came up. The first error was a .NET Framework error. I pressed continue to move past the error and later got another error when trying to exit the program causing the program to freeze up. I was able to hit Continue and eventually close the program. I also developed corruption in my Opera web browser and had to repair a couple of extensions before I could continue using Opera again. I don't know if the program caused this corruption or not but hadn't had that problem before. I will uninstall MSTech Search and continue using FreeCommander for my Windows search needs. I always back up the registry with ERUNT before trying new programs so I will revert back to the previous settings if I encounter any more problems. The errors are pasted below.

We were offered the program Text Seek Business on this site a couple of days ago so I'm wondering if this program has any advantages as they both seem to do the same text search.

If purchased (only $9.99 today!), is this a lifetime license with any/all updates included, or what?

Reply   |   Comment by HMarx  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

HMarx,

Great, a pre-indexing type of file content search tool -- a very welcome update to your product! Typically (if functioning/implemented properly) these are MUCH faster. Thanks very much for this offer -- I hope it continues to mature into a popular and category-leading product for you.

I went ahead and purchased a "lifetime" license (bargain priced today) in the hope that it includes not only updates but also upgrades? If this product continues to improve then hopefully it will be money well spent.

However, after opening the "Index Settings" and adding 2 folders to index (my personal account folder on C:, and the root of drive D: where I dump all files/documents collected while browsing daily), after manually choosing to "refresh" the index I can not close the "Index Settings" window while it is actively indexing the contents of the files; i.e., I can not immediately return to the search window to do any searching while indexing is ongoing, and it takes a while, even on subsequent/repeat passes.

Is there no way for indexing to occur in the background? And does it completely rebuild the index every time, or simply update based on those files that have changed?

Installed and registered OK. I wanted to find a document containing a specific person's name and I don't know the location or name of the file (a Word .doc or docx. file) but this software needs to know the name of the file. Therefore this program isn't any use to me. If I knew thw name of the file and would just do a simple search for the person's name. I don't see the purpose this program.

Reply   |   Comment by Eddie  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

Dear Eddie,
Thanks for your comment, The software does not need the file name, you can also select all the file types, if you don't know the version or type.

Hi Unknow User!!
I went through your whole comments.
Here are some of your invalid points.
- Most of the applications are built in English language, because its one of the most used language and most of the software users are familiar with English language.
- Obviously you haven't use the software, because there is a "Search Report" which shows the search progress on the results section
- It does have Simultaneously search option that you can open several search tabs for different phrases on different locations on you computer.
- Three items of your comment are related to one subject, you just repeated it (Search Profile)
- The file type selection method is a choice of the developer, (In my opinion I like it as it is right now, also there is another option, you can right click on the list box and select a group of similar documents types at once)
- The number 12, i couldn't understand what you are talking about, if you are talking about basic and advanced search mode, it's right there on the search mode section with better access.
- About number 13, some pdf files are encrypted or they are converted, these kind of pdf files contents can not be searched unless it converted back to normal text using OCR methods
- You have mentioned context menu, and language options several times
- Number 16, open files in other programs or in the Search in Contents itself? you should know if one file is being used by other software, windows doesn't allow the file being opened and it won't be accessible for some functionality at the same time.

I've tried a number of "search text in file" programs, many of which are suggested by other users in the comments. This is the most impressive program I've come across, mainly due to the clear way in which results are displayed and can be investigated. It also searches within .pdf files.

Morgan Potye, many of these 'detections' nowadays are harmless software wherein the Setup program contains offers for other software - call it 'adware', whatever you wish but it's harmless in that any careful user can opt out of those offers and go on to install the software in a clean, virus free manner. These detections are not real malware or viruses - they are what is known as 'PUP', potentially unwanted programs, things like that. For example, MalwareBytes and some other anti-malware products flag innocent Auslogics Software as 'bad' for some unknown reason. But to my mind Auslogics puts out a fine array of products, not viruses! Sheesh .. so the user has to employ some common sense and take these 'detections' of so called 'malware' with a grain of salt sometimes.

Dear Lady/Gentleman,

Kindly I ask your attention.

Thanks about the GOTD Offer! :)

(Win 10 x64 Pro)
Installed good, toke some time the first time to start, but after that good.
Searches went good, Adding a New Search Windows goes pretty slow (to my opinion).
Except the first time there was an error message (Toke a Screenshot & Saved the Error File):

Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in
your application. If you click Continue, the application
will ignore this error and attempt to continue.

DETAILS:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhand-led exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

However, something looks like missing:

1. No Option to set Start With Windows (it just does);
2. No Language Setting Option;
3. No Search Activity Shown;
4. No Profiles Search Settings Options;
5. No All/Simultaneously Search (with Different Search Profiles) Option (search more than just one Search Profile
by User Anytime);
6. Option to Name Saved Results by user (just ad a drop-down box and ad Saved As);
7. Option to List All Saved Search Profiles and/or Saved Searches at the System Tray (all with the Option to
Load/Pre-load and Just Ad to the List);
8. Option to Edit those Saved Search Profiles and/or Saved Searches;
9. (this is bad) No Option to Set In Context-menu (only at installation, need to re-install to have that);
10. File Type Settings at the Search Windows could be a drop-down box, that stays open (when clicking and/or
hoovering over it) and more than one file type can be set, yes with scroll option;
11. Option to Keep/Save More than Once (the old/previous Search Save not over written) the Search Results over
time (and at Search Profiles some Option about that too);
12. (ANY ONE) ?

Save Search | Load Search at the Search Windows aren't placed correct.
All others are with spaces between them and these two don't have a space between them.

PS: Have a happy work week & weekend! :)

USER,

12. A Standard Setting/Tab Option might be a good thing to have, with some choices by the program provider to set standard and that option at the system try too;
13. Information Why some files can't be read by the program (some PDF files can be just a Picture of something and be converted into a PDF file, some PDF Creators do make it One File or something like that and they just can't be read too I guess), a sort of OCR might be needed?;
14. ?

Reply   |   Comment by USER  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-10)

USER,

Did re-install it, No Reset of the program, some file just keep installed, did use an uninstaller.

Messege:
Files are still present, might be some other programs use them.
Other MSTech programs?
So, can it or can it not be deleted?
Wasn't before the installation,..?

Context Menu wasn't an option, when re-installing the software, Nor Language Setting.
?
Have Context Menu Set, when it was set to NO.
?

Context Menu is present at most locations,
Except at Windows Explorer Quick Access/- This PC & - Recycle bin don't have the MSTech Search in Contents at the Context Menu.

Why not Constant Present, One Click and It's Always Ready To Use, and Two Clicks and It's In USE! :)?

Searching in a Opened File, doesn't work. You have to scan the file itself.

So, New Idea's?

14. Option Always at Context Menu Present MSTech Search in Contents;
15. Options to Repair/Re-install/Fresh Install & Uninstall;
16. Option to Search in Opened Files;
17. (Any One) ?

USER, you can get a free software like Autoruns to show you every possible way a program can be set to startup with Windows, or when the user logs on. And when you find the entry you can disable it from starting automatically. Just google for Autoruns, it's very simple and easy to use.

...and in past comments #17 (Gary) and #2 (Laurie) for v1.5.4 :

txtim, I had the identical experience. Things the Windows built-in search finds INSTANTLY, this thing cannot find. I tried multiple, known content and filename searches and this thing found IRRELEVANT RESULTS, but NOT THE INTENDED RESULTS. It's a lemon!!!

Too bad I can’t use the program! Whenever I click on the Start button for a contents search, it just pops up a window saying:-
To start the search first please resolve the following issues:
- adjust the search location.

I don’t know what search location issue to resolve for I have already ticked Search In Computer.
A total waste of time. Uninstalling.

JonK,

At Search In, you have to click the Add Button, than set a Location and the Search can be Started.

Added to number 12 at the list by USER:

12 A Standard Setting/Tab Option might be a good thing to have, with some choices by the program provider to set standard and that option at the system try too?

Enjoy! :)

Dear JonK,
These options will tell the software which search method to use
1- Indexed Search
2- Computer Search
3- Indexed + Computer search

But in Computer search you should locate the folder or drive you want to perform the search by clicking the "Add" button.
Or you can simply right-click on your desired folder and click on go to "Search in Contents" menu and click on your preferred search mode.

Mary Johnson,

JonK, You would click on the C: drive (or alternate drive if you have more than one) it's giving you an option to search a specific folder(s) instead of all the drives attached so the search results would be faster. I used it and it worked for me searching for specific names in pdf files, trust me, it works and works well

Seems to find hits on Word and text documents but not PDF files, plus only the Word documents are listed in the found panel. My search should have found 16 Word documents, 6 .pdf files, and 2 .txt documents. The total found was 18, which is likely just the word plus text files, but only the 16 Word documents were actually presented in the review list. The text documents were in the count but not available in the review.

I would be interested in trying if it required a password to access it and use it.

Rick,

Read the README.txt file that came with the GOTD Offer ZIP package.
There you can find the License Key.

Or, is it a Real Password that's being asked?

Good luck & have lots fun! :)

Could you please tell me how to change the language to German?

Many thanks!

Hi Marco,
I have tried both, and both of them do what they said,
Both of them support:
- Multi thread search
- Most essential and common document types
but in my opinion "MSTech Search in Content Pro" is better.
Why? because there are some advantages in MSTech Search in Contents :
- You don't need a third party application to edit or view the original files, you can open and edit them using the software file viewer
- It also has document convertor which allows you to convert your files to any format (for instance no need to have MS Office Word installed on your computer, you can convert your Microsoft Word documents to PDF or any other formats such HTML, EPUB using the software.
- It has some useful tools like "Notes", which you can copy selected texts from different files during your search and save them in the software on your computer. this feature can be very useful for researchers and students.

BTW, I've tried the software and it supports power point files as well (pptx and ppsx format)

Anyways you are downloading the pro version for free now ;) , but surely it's up to you to use anyone you like.

Anyways, I have already installed the freeware Agent Ransack. It looks like mine can scan also into PowerPoint files, but I was not to do the same with "MSTech Search Contents Pro". Could you please confirm whether this type of documents cannot be scanned? Moreover, what are the advantages of this software compared with the freeware solution of Agent Ransack? Thanks!

Agent Ransack is excellent and can search all the file types which this giveaway claims to be able to search. Another useful free tool for searching file contents is AstroGrep.

Marco Belotti, I've used Agent Ransack as my search tool for a long time now. It is my Go To search tool as well.

Xoco, I agree. There is nothing better than Agent Ransack. It will search any for content in any program you ask it to, and it is free.
