When will MSTech learn how to create a single executable installer? Not yet obviously! Consider investigatin Inno or Wix or Nullsoft installers all free and not a very big learning curve with any of them. There are others including commercial installers too.

TK, as well as install your programs into a MODERN location like C:\Program Files\ or C:\Program Files (x86) as a appropriate your current generation of programs are being installed as if you are programming for Windows 3.0! Stop polluting the root of the system drive with your improperly designed and made and "installed" programs!

Finally installed it. Took loooong minutes to install MSNet Framework.
The installation GUI was taken from the 1980's, almost a Win 95 interface... not good!

Clicked on the installed desktop icon, and got:

SQL: logic error
Clicked on "Continue". Sure, it opened, but with a screwed up GUI!

The app didn't take into account that I'm using a large RES monitor adjusted with 125% font enlargement, and other stuff.

Uninstalled... I won't trust MSTech anymore!

unlike others who said why installing this software, I have to say have been using this software since version one and it has been a tremendous help to organize my desktop and have a clean screen. besides, having files on the desktop will slow down the OS.
plus, moving files from the desktop improves the OS performance and speed.
anyway, anyone has an approach on doing their tasks on computer. I can only speak for myself and I enjoyed this software.

What's the difference between Basic and Pro version?

Reply   |   Comment by JackieK  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

JackieK, Yes, the website pages for the Basic and Pro versions look pretty much the same (I haven't done a detailed comparison). Most program sites give you a comparison chart, but I didn't see one there.

I have 3 tiny icons on my desktop: Applications, utilities and games. Clicking on any one of them opens up an alphabetical list of what I need and I can find anything in 3 seconds or less. Live the memory for the running applications and not software of 90 MB to run in the background every time you turn on the computer.

i see a lot of complaining about this program, or saying things like "why would we need this?"

well, i use a software called Stardock Fences. Similar concept. it comes in Very handy. I have 5 tiny little self labelled bars at the edges of my screen...when i mouse over them they roll out and contain the shortcuts i put into them...

Reply   |   Comment by Toobs  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

Fences is the BEST! I have used it since Version 1 was in beta. Really keeps my desktop organized. It costs a few bucks, but if you're a neat f5reak, it's well worth it.

Why we need this software?
I usually put all daily working program shortcuts on the taskbar then, Right Click - View - Show Desktop Icons, uncheck it to hide all icons and files on the Desktop.

Nothing on the Desktop then and don't need an other program open at PC startup.

TOM, I'm having the same problem. "source file not found" anybody having success downloading

Reply   |   Comment by AJ  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

TOM, In addition to the right click, turn off desktop icons, I right click in the TaskBar and in Toolbars click Desktop. This makes a scrollable list of everything in the Desktop folders of both All Users and you. Right click on anything in the list and Sort by name. Now you have a scrollable alphabetical list reached via a button in the TaskBar (on the right, next to the System Tray). Even the Recycle Bin in there and one can right click it and empty it! I have nothing visible ON my Desktop and many many in that list!

The installer (MST. cab ) is not responding even after many re-tries .

king,
You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program to allow the installation to go ahead. Once the software is installed, return to the antivirus program and enable it.

Dino, why would one have to disable an anti-virus? What are you hiding. Your like a Democrat trying to slip something past us. Can't trust a company the requires this procedure.

Reply   |   Comment by Ed  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

king, the CAB file is not the installer... AFTER you have extracted the contents of the download bundle into its own folder try double clicking on Setup.msi

Reply   |   Comment by TK  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Dino, that hack/workaround is only required with setup.exe/gcd and activate.exe/gcd wrapped installer/activator NOT when installing an ordinary MSI + CAB pre-release installation system.

dve stevenson, agreed. I installed this on Vista and edited the XML *.config files "4.8" strings to "4.6" which allowed it to run only to be invited to do something about a folder... with an input box as if it was expecting some kind of input for some reason... no help button or explanation of what that folder was for or where it should be located in an ideal world. very poorly thought out. Really there should be no external .config files on .NET applications only private developer builds should have .config files with them. The settings within the .config files should be hard coded into the .NET executables and DLLs. Uninstalled here... if the developers cannot follow industry best practices or even last centuries common practice I certainly cannot trust them to have any authority over my mission critical desktops. It is just asking for a disaster!

I clutter up my desktop. Then I put all the shortcuts in a new folder, called Desktop. I store that folder in a convenient place, remove all shortcuts on my real desktop and put one single shortcut to (you guessed it) my Desktop folder on my real desktop.

That's all, folks!

Reply   |   Comment by krypteller  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+27)

Similar, but I've two folders on my desktop - 'documents' and 'programs'. I use the normal 'my documents' folder for proper documents, but use the desktop as a dumping ground for files I'm working on, downloaded, etc. Every now and then these get dragged into 'documents'. Every program installed slaps an icon on the desktop (which can't be found!) so they get dragged into 'programs'.
Organised chaos...

Reply   |   Comment by Chris  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+34)

krypteller,
As most of us know, there is a folder already called Desktop, under the root drive of C: ... So if there is 2 folders called Desktop, there could be slight confusion when the end user does a manual search in their "Windows Explorer" (or file explorer) ... even more-so confusing when the user does a search for the folder Desktop.
So the file path would appear like: C:\Users\WINDOWS 10\Desktop\Desktop..... Though the file search will find a duplicate in each folder "if, a Duplicate file exists (a hypothetical scenario)
*** So to prevent the above scenario, I would call this folder "Desk Doc Tidy", hence for Documents.... then for photos I would create a folder called, "Desk Photo Tidy" ... For Videos - call it "Desk Video Tidy"..... I guess the general concept idea is made.
* * * THEN, move each respective folder to its Library.... Creating a folder shortcut on the desktop for the newly created folders.

I have heaps of program shortcuts on the desktop, so I've created a folder "Desk Prog Tidy"... Then store this folder in Program Files .... and create a shortcut to place on the Desktop. Then when I wish to access anything I used to store on the desktop, I open the folder which stores the file I wish to use.

To New computer users, a folder shortcut on the destop uses less computer resources/memory. Especially each time when restarting Windows or rebooting the computer.

Dino, in order to stop you worrying, I seem to have stored the folders containing the shortcuts in C:\Users\my users name\OneDrive\Desktop. It works fine.

If you worry about restarting Windows or rebooting the computer: I always put the computer to sleep, instead of shutting it off completely. I only reboot Windows 10 if necessary, ie after a mayor Windows update or installing software that asks for a restart after the installation has completed.

Reply   |   Comment by krypteller  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

Dino, There are ALREADY 2 folders called Desktop within the System drives heirachy used by every windows login, the Public Desktop and the Users Desktop... adding a folder called Desktop on the Users Desktop is no different to calling any other named Windows itself used to do something similar during an optional periodic cleanup of unused desktop icons every 60 days. I vaguely recal windows would call the folder unused desktop icons or something similar. you are both in your own ways re-inventing an old wheel and saying my names better than yours.
