dunno if the converter is worth it- so many to choose from, and splitting with the doiteasier.org app appears quite adequate. and they give out the same reg code to all, nice.

making title snapshots, now that could be handy to pair with the converter box

Now it's really not appropriate to bash the country of origin, but I will say something about China.

Most all Chinese products produced are of inferior quality as they have no quality control over there. How many times on the news lately have you seen recalls of inferior or potentially dangerous Chinese products

I know this for a fact as I once owned a wholesale/retail craft parts store which included a line gifts as well. the quality of these products from China were definitely of inferior quality

Funny, on their website under News, it states the following:

May 27, 2008
MovieShop Suite(Browser + Framer), Cross-Platform Open source Video Manager has been released.

Mar 25, 2008
MovieShop Framer, Cross-Platform Open source Video Processor has been released.

Feb 18, 2008
MovieShop Browser, Cross-Platform Open source Video Browser has been released.

Last time I checked open source software was free.

It also adds a context menu entry "Open with MovieShop". Try right-clicking on your desktop icons such as Computer, Network, your user folder, and even Control Panel

This really wants me to put back my version of Visual Basic and write a crappy piece of software, then join the regnow affiliate program and I might become rich.

But I'm not that type of person who rips people off with clones of other manufacturer's programs.

In conclusion, comparing this program to ACDSee is like comparing a $643,330 2003 Ferrari Enzo Coupe to a Ford Pinto

Actually there are exit buttons on this thing, you just have to try to find the edges and then shrink the program down and there they are .
The problem is that it shows up beyond fullscreen so everyone is thinking theres no X to close but its there. The downside is that even after you resize to what you want and close when you open it again you gotta find the edges again. Hint: work around the top right corner to find the edge.

actually it is not that great as people mentioned, lame unpleasing interface, I would think it would be able to browse network drives (unless you map them), Book marks to save you locations , crashes.
uninstalling right now

Downloaded and installed with no problems, used the browser to view the movie image and yes if the first frame is blank you see a black screen. Also I did a conversion clip that I tested but it will stop dead in its tracks if you want to exit before a conversion is done. Only way to exit is control-alt-delete to end program. Buggy - yes- I don't like a program that was not fully developed.

Sorry, I tried. Wasted my time trying. I thought the program can make thumbnails of my video files so that I can see which video file to open from my Windows Explorer. But just does not know how it does it or whether it does it at all.

Sorry, will un-install it. I can use Format Factory if I have to convert files.

further to my comments #30, I found out how to open files in the 'Framer' module, you need to use the 'EJECT' icon!!! Once you one a file, clicking the ADD button just seems to replicate the original OPEN file! It still didn't Crash under WIn7 Beta!!! The other was to Open files is to use the main Suite launcher and select the Framer icon! There is a quite noce FAC file manager but for some reason it only seems to launch from certain functions, otherwise all you get is a primative drive letter list, no partition labels! Which is a pain as I have several OSes on my PC and the partitions get different enumeration dependant on the particular OS.
With a little work this could be a very useful product, for those of us that like to 'tinker' with video clips!

I was soooo excited with the ACDSee comparison, I thought GOAD had finally gave us a quality program, but..........

Comparing this piece of software to ACDSee is absolutely ridiculous. Who put up that statement anyway? I sure hope they had permission to do so.

I first opened up Movie Browser and was totally disgusted with the interface, especially the font. Where is the options menu....Non-existant.

I then brought up MovieShop Framer, where the interface looked much better. Then I made the mistake of clicking on a button (I believe it was the Camera button) and it brought up a dialog box that has a link to their homepage, with 4 blank boxes below it. Visit the homepage and try clicking on the Technical Support link on the Contact Us page

http://www.fame-ring.com/forum

404 Error, am I surprised...No

Also has a button titled giveawayoftheday version. Clicking on that does nothing.

Under that is a button titled Load Sub Font File. Clicking on that brings you to a single location with the arial.ttf font displayed and a ? in the preview box. There are several tiny lines above the directory that are actually links to other locations. Since I install all my 3rd party apps to my E: drive, I couldn't even access the Windows\fonts folder.

Then I clicked on Show Display Adapter. Now I'm totally stuck with this dialog box (with absolutely no way to close it.) I can't even work with the program. When I try to click any button. It just fails to function. I had to do an Alt-Ctr-Del and end task to get out of the program

This program is a great example of poor development at its finest.

Stay away from this program as you would stay away from someone who has the plague

100 thumbs down, I hope the counter reflects this

I'm loving it so far. Installed slowly with little output from the Progress Bar, but without any problems (XP Pro SP3).

I only tested the Converter, 'cos that's all I wanted. Here's the results of a short test.

Converted 398MB .m2ts to 33KB .avi in 11:32 with preview screen on (cool, but it slows it down a little). The Progress Box (which does require the Escape button to close when the conversion's complete unless you check the "Close when complete" box) contains lots of accurate info, including Speed = .33x real time.

Converted a batch of 3 .m2ts files to .avi files with the Preview screen turned off (369MB > 30MB in 9:11, 329MB > 27MB in 8:03 and 232MB > 19MB in 5:58) for a total of 930MB to 78MB in 23:12, Speed = .37x real time. That's within a second or 2 of what the program said it would take when it first started the batch, and I started task mgr. part-way thru to see what it was using (98% CPU). All output files play fine, sound synced properly etc.

The Help is there, it's well written with very little ESL, with screenshots and clear instructions, and even some cool tips on how to make it run faster.

Coupla things on my Wish List. Obviously it'd be nice if all the boxes came with a "Close" button, but no biggie - the Esc button's handy.

When adding files to the batch list, you have to do it 1 at a time. Be better if you could select multiple files with the Control key.

You can resize the "Batch List" box so that long paths are visible, but not the "Input File" box or the "Converting" box, so it's a bit hard to know exactly what's going on at a given point, specially if your files are all named with the date and time they were recorded. All the file names from a given day are the same except the last 4 digits, which get chopped off by the box being too small, and you can't scroll or pan within the box, but it processes the batch in sequence correctly, and the Progress box provides clear and accurate info so, again, no biggie.

This one's a keeper. It's going to replace the previously given away (and terribly slow and unpredictable) Total Video Converter.

Thumbs up, and thanks, GAOTD.

Fully-functional, with the registration instructions and key displayed on the web site. Works great! Only thing missing was a dll which I got off the web, no problem. Better than Windows Movie Maker, which frequently messes up this kind of action. Easy Video Splitter is a nice one-trick pony. Thanks again.

I appreciate your comments, watcher13 (#33). No, I don't believe that the company or its products are being used in some way to spy upon us. My concern is with the wider picture.

It's by no means certain that this is a Chinese company, but let's say it is.

The products sold by Chinese companies to the likes of us in the West boost China's foreign earnings, helping to make it more prosperous, thus allowing the communist state to spend much more on increasing and equipping its armed forces, which in turn makes it all the more easier to keep its people enslaved, dominate nearby nations and continue its brutal occupation of tiny Tibet.

With apologies to all if this is too far off topic... And of course Totally FWIW...

Celt42 (#10) commented on not wanting to try today's GOTD offer based on several factors, including: "I don’t like supporting dictatorships". Watcher13 (#33) disagreed with that sentiment.

Personally I think we each should act according to our conscience, at whatever level we're both comfortable with and capable of. Some of the worst things in history happened tragically while others just looked on, so I think it admirable when someone bases their actions on their personal morals. At the same time I think we're all smart enough to think things through, & make a realistic judgment about the effects of our actions down the road... a knee-jerk response that isn't thought out, while it makes us feel good about ourselves, often has the opposite effect of what we intended.

I hope that no one ever feels pressured to change or remain silent when it comes to their views on supporting things like software from a country (or countries) they disagree with. Just as strongly I hope that that sort of decision is always well thought out, and so worthy of the respect that I'm sure everyone here gives everyone else who takes the time to comment.

After reading the earlier comments, I gave this a try simply because of GOTD's rep -- while some of the apps they offer aren't top of class, overall they've been pretty decent. IMHO I shouldn't have bothered...

The best thing I can say about MovieShop Browser is that it doesn't change much of anything in the registry, though what it did change is to me, unpardonable... It changed my default font in XP SP3 from Ariel in the Windows\Fonts folder to an older version in it's own, program folder.

Otherwise MovieShop Browser appears to be a front end (GUI) for other, readily available programs, though most seem not that well known. As a GUI, it's pretty much at the old DOS level (pre-Windows), rather than anything I've ever seen going back to Win 3.1... While now ancient, Win 3.1 introduced the concept of multiple, sizable Windows to the IBM-type PC, & I haven't seen *anything* run in Windows that didn't fit that model ever since -- til now that is.

For those having problems running the program, assuming you have a reason to want to, it's possible you already have some of the codecs this program uses installed -- MovieShop Browser doesn't register the codecs that are included, so it might be trying to use your (newer?) versions instead, and running into compatibility problems. Google on the individual programs (.exe files) in the program's folder, & you'll also get a few hits re: crashes, though as mentioned they're not that well known so you won't find a lot of relevant info.

In case it comes in handy for those un-installing this program, revo uninstaller does a pretty fair job, but if you want to double check, installation puts files/folders in your Windows\Downloaded Installations & Windows\Installer folders. It also adds a folder to Application Data\Microsoft\Installer under your profiles name in Documents and Settings. If you didn't back up your registry beforehand, you'll probably want to take a look at your installed fonts as well, whether you use a Font Mgr or simply visit the Windows\Fonts folder (which should install every font contained in that folder).

This began to look promising, however, the developer needs to add a link to the windows task manager so that the user can close several of the windows. Of course that terminates the program, which isn't a bad idea anyway.

#10 Celt 42, you make a lot of good points and I appreciate them. As far as supporting dictatorships, it may not be as bad as you say. I hope we don't get to the point of starving everyone unfortunate enough to live in a dictatorship. Poverty, unfortunately, doesn't always cause the people to overthrow their governments. And sometimes when they do, one dictatorship just replaces another. So, it's a tough problem. I can more see people being suspicious about spying from dictatorships. But, almost all of the time, these little developers are too small for their governments to spend time harassing. And most of us are too small for these governments to want to spy on. I have no critical personal information on my computer, for example. I am conscious of my machine being turned into a zombie, and am pretty sure it hasn't been. If the Chinese or Russians were bugging all the software that came from there, it would have been exposed a long time ago. I know your intentions are good, but I think you're worrying too much. I agree, though, I like to know where the software is coming from.

On today's software, it's becoming more clear that this coding doesn't work for all hardware. That would explain running on some identical Vista's and not others. After all, many Vista's run on newer hardware, which might explain some of the glitches. FameRing may need to catch up a little, or try a virtual framework. It's natural to think it's always about the OS, but we had a game giveaway yesterday where the problems were clearly in interfacing with the hardware. Though Vista might aggravate that. Updating your drivers may help, but it's only 50-50 that the correction needs to be on the side of the people having problems.

Installs and runs under Win7 Beta x64 but interface is very primative.
#9, if you are serious, you can make desktop wallpaper! #12 you need to use the [esc] key to exit dialog windows. I found this out because I was converting a video and pressed [Win][Esc] to get to taskbar and it exited the conversion! The file browser is very primative and the program doesn't automatically add the file extension, even though it shows file type! There is no HELP available when pressing F1 but the program does seem to produce good output in the Browser. I was not able to figure out how to load an INPUT file into the 'Framer', so couldn't test it. On my core-2 it was rendering at 2.3- 2.5 times realtime rate using 60%CPU when I turned off 'preview' rate went up to 3.4-3.6 times realtime rate and CPU went up to 70-80%. Does not really support multitasking, since it intercepts all [win] keystrokes so you can't toggle apps without ending the current task. No really good programming!! With some work on the interface, it could be a very useful App! But Thumbs down for now!!

This is for James(comment #2) that's a standard Windows error, all it's saying is that those are the error reports, not what the problem is..typically when you get that, it means something blocked the install, or there was a corruption of the file you downloaded. Check your virus scanner or firewall, best thing to do is to turn them off when installing programs. They have a tendency to stop programs or apps from installing correctly. Again, the error you got doesn't say why it had a problem, the files fac.exe.mdmp and appcompat.txt are the files you send to Microsoft for the error reporting service. I did download the app, haven't played with it yet, but it seems pretty interesting and useful for those of us who do video editing and have quite a few video and movie files. As for #5, pay closer attention to what it's trying to tell you in the description, 1G of RAM is what's necessary for converting HD video files..for a site that's primarily for Tech Geeks, we seem to have quite a few people who don't really know what they are doing or talking about..

Well I installed the program on Vista Enterprise no problem on install. I tried to do what the program states it does, and it does do all of that. I think the product is overpriced for the development that appears to be put into it. I have written a simialar product for our internal use only, and it is complicated to write what they have done so far, but I feel it is no way near a relaese product. The interface needs to be worked on a bit more, and the help needs to be spruced up a bit. If your a novice and have time to tinker this may be a good clip editor for you, however there are other products on the market that are cheaper than 75 dollars that are much better.

In general I'd give this product a 6 out of 10 with possibility for improvement if they work on it more. This is not a keep for me, but thanks GiveawayOfTheDay for the service and professional download offered.

First impressions. XP Pro sp3 32

Immediately this software loaded in full screen, which I find intrusive.
Couldn't find the minimize, maximize buttons.
Directory panel is ancient Windows 95 style.
When clicking on my 'D' drive to access my films in order to test this program my drive would not expand to reveal my films folder, tried the 'C' drive and all expanded. Not very consistent.

I don't really like to make abrasive comments but in this case I feel I have to. This software should never have been released, it certainly does not conform to Win 32 programming standards.

I cannot comment any further as I have removed this abomination of software from my system.

Sorry to be so abrupt but as a Windows developer I strongly felt the need to comment. Thumbs down I'm afraid.

On open/save, the program 'features' a non-OS filebrowser I know from opensource and freeware programs. Also when clicking the 'Convert Now' button, a similar window is presented.
In that window a profile must be selected of which the only format I actually use is flv. No converting into mpg or avi is supported. Confusingly, the small button 'Convert Now' must be clicked; 'load' and 'save' is about these profiles.

Converting an .mpg went smoothly, in realtime a 100 mB file was reduced to a 9.9 mB .flv, the youTube format.
However, there are no close boxes or 'exit' buttons in these screens. One has to use alt-F4 to escape the focus-stealing windows.

About the core use of this program: browsing folders with movies.
Showing lots of movie files' thumbnails is fast and a movie preview is at the left bottom. Aspect ratio of that preview window is set by dragging the borders.
The Flash format .swf and windows .asf files are not supported.

Many movies I have start with a black frame and that is how they are shown in the app, unless they are previewed. There is no way to assign a thumb from another than the first frame. So what this program is intended for is not working too well for me.

Funnily, with this giveaway 'Movieshop Framer' is also installed. Use of that standalone program is completely unclear to me since there seems to be no way to import a movie. There is no help available in the program or on the site of the maker(s). No support anywhere.
However, on rightclicking a movie file in the browser app a similar window to that of 'Framer' opens, but a lot smaller. It seems it is possible to convert into avi and mpg after all, but for now I am too irritated with the pitfalls and searching for clues within this whole thing to try it out any further.

My impression is that this is made by a hobby programmer trying to go professional. Not too shabby but way too peculiar an interface to be consumer useable.
A long way to go before it can be reckoned to give value-for-money.

The software installed & registered with no problems with Vista Home Premium. I converted an .FLV video into an MP4 with excellent results. Since the converter box doesn't have an exit button, [alt][F4] shortcut keys were used to close it. I tried to convert an .AVI video into .FLV with no complete success, only the audio was converted. It was handy to use the jog-wheel (that gray circle in the top right corner, with a white dot near the edge) to find the frames I wanted to keep. On my system (NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS Adapter Board), the software didn't crash or freeze once.

#6 - Bob, plenty of problem for me after install. The software hangs when I tried to split a video file. Tried a few times, the same thing happened. And it is last updated in 2003.
