Tried this program, it found malware but it did not remove it, I think this program gives false positives so you have to purchase. Every other malware remover I tried did remove findings. My advice is to stay away from this program.

My question is how does this differ from yesterday's offering of Malware Hunter Pro (from the same company?)?

Thanks. Any input appreciated.

So I applied for the free copy of Glarysoft Malware Hunter yesterday and I received an email with a download link, but I didn't receive an activation key. Does anybody know how I can go about obtaining my key?

Reply   |   Comment by PsyintZ  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

PsyintZ, the K#EY is in the README.TXT that was downloaded with the program. If you installed yesterday then you can apply the key today and you are good. If you did not install you have to wait until it is offered again.

What I like:

It can use Avira antimalware engine for real-time scanning if you activate it.

What I don't like:

Main Interface window can't be maximized. Why in the world programmers do this it's beyond my logic.

installed.
not impressed with other features installed like PC booster
check your task manager for other items now running
half of the program is from Glarysoft utilities like reg cleaner and startup scanner
Lots of opinions have been shared today and here is mine, not that it will be seen at this late time.
the priority is to keep the crap off your computer to begin with, for this you need active, running in background software.
to warn you and block anything from getting on your puter. prevention is a lot easier than removal to deal with the crapware. scanning weekly after a few boots during the week and finding your infected is to late.
your av program is proactive, so should your malware be.
its a lot easier to keep your drunk uncle out of your house than it is kicking him out. having active door/gate men is always best

Malware Hunter Pro does include an active anti-virus protection. This is not stated clearly. Is running this Pro version alone or with Windows Defender adequate protection? Similar to the updated Malwarebyes Pro.

Reply   |   Comment by Bart  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Bart, it includes the Avira antivirus engine which, if you activate it from the program interface, is a reputable antivirus. So yes, it should provide decent to good protection - although no product can substitute for good user habits [avoiding warez and porn sites, and other dangerous places on the web where malware lurks; not clicking on email attachments; etc.]. It also provides protection for inserted USB devices [drives] and scans everything you download from the net.

I am currently running it and I do have some confusions. The program claims to be a Malware Hunter but the scan is called a virus scan in the UI, besides that there are optimization options present like in a utility program. By all means, it might call itself Malware Hunter and it might even do that but it looks like Glary is actually unsure about what they want this program to be.

As backup on demand scanner... why not. As real-time protection.... unsure

Mavadelo, and no.. Virus and Malware are not the same thing

Reply   |   Comment by Mavadelo  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Mavadelo, it works as both an on-demand scanner and real time protection. You must manually activate the Avira antivirus engine, which is a very good German product.

Reply   |   Comment by Randy Bell  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Mavadelo, It is neither, this software works after you have been infected and are trying to remove the virus.
If the virus is a of known variety, it may find it, but if the virus in your system is new or works under different street name, this software is a miss.

Firstly I managed to download, install and register without any problem. I already have Malwarebytes on my PC and had run a full scan a few days ago during which it detected a number of potentially unwanted programs, a few relatively harmless but annoying Trojans and other malware which it had put in to quarantine. To test today's offering I restored all the quarantined files and turned off Malwarebites and scanned my PC with Malware Hunter (full scan) and the results were a little disappointing. Of the known 65 malwares on my machine Malware Hunter found only 3 and produced 5 false positives, not at all what I expected. Uninstalled and turned on Malwarebytes again and re-scanned my machine and successfully removed all 65 malwares.

Anti virus software works after the fact, it means, the virus name must be known first and then remove it, which makes it not very efficient. By the time they update their software and then update your computer and run a scan, it may be to late to stop the damage. Most viruses act in real time mode and are not stored inside your computer.
I do not think the hackers will use the already used virus name to attack your computer, many viruses are hidden in the drivers you update under unknown names or visiting "land mine" websites.
Most viruses sneak behind the firewalls or when clicking on links or when downloading software of an unknown origin.

Reply   |   Comment by Morgan  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-16)

Morgan, You said:

Anti virus software works after the fact... the virus name must be known first and then remove it".
cite="">

This is true of some antivirus programs, but not all. Many security apps now use multiple methods of discovering threats, or determining whether any action a program wants to perform is a potential threat. And most of the top-rated security suites include Heuristic tests that check every action in real-time to catch threats as they attempt to access a system, and alert the user to the risk.

No antivirus or security suite is perfect, and yes, they can decrease efficiency. But any system is much more secure if it has an appropriate set of security measures in place.

- Best of luck!

Reply   |   Comment by Luckystiff63  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Morgan,

Actually the best way to read about what security software does is to visit the web site for whatever brand you're interested in. A good security suite will use a database of known malware signatures, and if it detects code in a file that matches one of those signatures it'll block it, usually by quarantining it. It'll also monitor what's going on when you're using Windows, & hopefully stop anything that appears like it might be up to no good. How it manages that 2nd part varies by brand as well as the package you've bought, as more expensive products within the same brand offer more protection to justify their higher price.

"Most viruses act in real time mode and are not stored inside your computer."

Some malware does have a destructive purpose, like deleting files, & then there's no purpose for it hanging around. Most however is designed to make a cybercriminal money, &/or to steal data -- in both cases the party responsible wants it to survive a long time undetected, so it will store something on the device to make sure it sticks around.

"... viruses are hidden in the drivers you update... or visiting "land mine" websites. Most viruses sneak behind the firewalls or when clicking on links or when downloading software..."

There are all sorts of ways, exploits to compromise a PC or server. One of the oldest is to offer malware infected files for download, drivers or otherwise. A web page or ad on a web page can contain malicious javascript or Flash, though if you install all patches & updates, use an ad blocker, & stick to known good sites, like GOTD, you'll most probably be OK.

Viruses do not really sneak around firewalls -- I think maybe you misunderstand how they work & what they're for. Generally a virus gets past your firewall & on your system because you allowed it, whether by receiving a malicious email, downloading something because you visited a malicious web site, and so on. The firewall's there to prevent something like a malicious scanning app or [often scripted] routine from connecting to the system.

Morgan, I agree with you, I know what you are talking about, I have lots of experience writing Anti virus software.
If the virus name is unknown, what is the purpose of scanning the computer?
Everyone who voted NO, should educate themselves first.

mike, seems like so often, you're the only one (or of a few) how knows what he's talking about. but in this world of alternative facts, who knows ;-)
Anyway. I NEVER had a virus on any of my computers. Simply because I always have firewall and antivirus program running (what sort ever, they're all good, more or less). Real danger is visiting strange (dangerous) sites. Even more, downloading software of unknown origin and - starting, even installing them.
Easy as that.

A question to developer: Can I use this together with Microsoft Security Essentials or should I turn off MSE?
Thanks

Reply   |   Comment by luppusi  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+15)

luppusi, In my experience, if a software does something Security essentials (or Defender on Win10) does, MSE will turn itself off. Defender in my case did not turn itself off so I would say MSE and this can be used side by side (that said MSE is more geared towards actual viruses while this targets malware. These 2 infestations are not the same)

Reply   |   Comment by Mavadelo  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

luppusi, Use it with it..it wont hurt to scan for malware separate from MSE

Hi everybody. :-)

This seems 360totalsecurity...
Maybe Glarysoft is joking with Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Ltd. (Qihoo 360), because qihoo 360 secure browser resembles another browser: http://www.digital-dd.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ie-qihoo-icons.jpg

Who knows...

This alone makes me me lose the will even to click on the "download now" button.

Hope this helps to make understand developers to create their own programs, and to bring them to the state of the art, instead of copying interfaces and using other AV's signatures...

xilolee, There are some similarities in the UI look I agree however that is just a skin and does say nothing. Many programs have similar looking skins. I have seen comparisons with other malware programs as well when googling. I know several utility programs that copy the looks of ASC as well. I guess if it works better ripped good than badly designed yourself.

I do have my own issues though

I will pass, but thank you GOTD. Everyone has their opinion about which software is best and the Antivirus and Malware category is no different and is the most hotly contested category out there, even among the experts. It really depends on who you talk to as to which Antivirus or Anti-Malware is best, but with that said Kaspersky, ESET (Nod), Bitdefender, and Emisoft continue to be among the top picks out there. And among the techs I've spoken with that build computers for others, either for a living or privately, Kaspersky and ESET are the two most popular brands installed on new computers (and NO I'm not talking about DELL and similar - those computers you can buy in a store or online). You'll have to do your own research on this offereing, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Reply   |   Comment by JonE  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

JonE,

"Everyone has their opinion about which software is best and the Antivirus and Malware category is no different..."

Easiest might be to visit av-test[.]org. They're not the only ones offering this sort of testing & comparison, but IMHO it's the quickest, easiest way to see comparative ratings.

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

JonE, The issue is, and I see you are in that same boat, that most just hear the term "virus" and think they are covered from new exploits or "zero-day" exploits by great anti-virus/anti-spam/firewall companies...do not fool yourself as many are not..you would be surprised how many machines get infected because a piece of malware slid through as a normal piece of code..Ive even seen ESET and BitDefender fooled...it never hurts to have malware protection on a machine be it from Glarysoft or Malwarebytes.

mike, Hey Mike; thanks for the tip - I didn't know about this one. I don't depend on one source for reviews, but many. I have to admit I like the way the sort everything out. Thanks for the tip.

Reply   |   Comment by JonE  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Dan, I've helped a lot of people with computer issues and the number one issue is that they are infested/infected with malware; usually more than one. I always suggest using more than one client, as long as they get along because you are right, even the best aren't perfect. Certainly more than one scanner. I've never seen anyone infected with a Virus. Virus can be malware, but malware isn't a Virus.
I do agree with everything you've said.

Reply   |   Comment by JonE  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

JonE, Thanks and yes virus's can be considered malware, but malware isn't a virus...it's a divious, cunning blight..I don't know if you read my 2nd comment to luppusi above, but I ran this "Malware Hunter" and the name can be rather deceiving..it is, in fact, an overglorified anti virus program..it does use the Avira scan engine, but I already have a great anti-virus program and wanted to compare "Malware Hunter" to Malwarebytes...it failed that comparison miserably...

I tried this software and the first thing I noticed was that it installed "Glarysoft Software Update Pro" Trial version alongside this software without asking me if I wanted it or not, and there was not an option to NOT install it when installing.

So I removed that first thing. Main reason I wanted to give this software a try was because I thought it might be a good second opinion Virus scanner. I didn't want to use the real time protection, I wanted to use it as an on demand scanner only. But much to my surprise there is no option to turn off real time protection inside the software.

I thought I would try a quick scan and the first thing it asked me was if I wanted to use the Avira scan engine and it said it would produce better scan results if I did. I didn't like that at all because I look at it like this : "Since they consider the Avira scan engine to be so good then wouldn't it make more sense for me to just use Avira?".

Don't get me wrong, the reason I am commenting here is because first I think others would be interested in more information concerning the software, and secondly because I would hope that the software creators would be interested as to what users think about it. I'm not commenting to trash talk the software at all, just giving my opinion.

Thank you for the offer Glarysoft & GOTD.

The option is presented below the license text at the beginning of the installation. Kind of tricky if you skim over the text and assume the checkbox applies to the Malware app

Joe,

"I didn't want to use the real time protection, I wanted to use it as an on demand scanner only. But much to my surprise there is no option to turn off real time protection inside the software."

There are free apps that do on-demand scanning from many of the brand names in the security software biz, & many don't require any installation. One catch is that many of them don't self-update, so you have to always download the latest before you do a scan.

As far as turning off security software goes, that can be the first thing malware tries to do, so different brands of security software go to different lengths to make turning them off somewhere between difficult & impossible. That's why folks running Kaspersky boot into Safe Mode to install GOTD offers BTW -- that's the only option to turn it off temporarily.

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

mike, Thanks, you don't know me so I understand and thank you for the information. But I am aware of all of those things. My thing is, I wanted to try and test this as an on demand scanner because I already have adequate real time Antivirus software. Most people use Malware Bytes free on demand scan. I would have liked to try this software as an on demand scanning software "SECOND OPINION" to form an opinion on my own as to how it stacks up against my current REAL TIME ANTIVIRUS software. But considering I don't have that option I can't judge one way or the other and just take the word of the authors or marketers of the software.

The biggest problem with Glarysoft has always been the LACK of DOCUMENTATION or information where their software products go. Nobody wants to run anything on their PC that they don't know or can't find out what it actually is doing. If you go to their site the documentation is really REALLY BAD, nothing has been updated for years and it's almost like they don't want to answer any questions with documentation. For that reason alone I wont be using this software.

I get the impression this is a re-branded antivirus product adding in some glarysoft maintenance product options? Either way, those are my opinions, and as I have already stated "I'm not throwing off or trying to trash this software, I am just giving my opinions and asking questions and any ACTIVE or SERIOUS developer wanting to provide these services should be in here answering and representing their product on ANY PROMOTION". I just wanted to point that out FOR THE DEVELOPERS INFORMATION.

Thank you, Have a Nice day! :-)

Allan , Many GOTD offerings are, as you say, outdated; not all, but many. Some companies are willing to give away their older versions in hopes that you like it enough to buy the most current version. That, of course, is not the only reason. But yes, today's offering is an older version, but not that old. They want you to try it and like it and if you do perhaps you will want to buy some of their other software, as well.

That makes sense, doesn't it?

Adrian, Well Adrian, that wasn't my point, but I am more than willing to pony up for a program that's worth it. My only point is that many companies are willing to give away their older programs in hopes that you like them enough to buy them and if you like one of their programs enough to buy it you might buy some of their other offerings.

Be interesting to know what another developer in this software sector thinks of Glarysoft's UI. Malwarebytes has an awkward habit (as iObit knows to its cost) of defending its intellectual property.

Tregs, Tregs, Try do a Google search on the subject, and you will find something useable. If ypu ask me, it's an overkill....but that's just my opinion. Good luck finding your own solution. Personally, I use Bitdefender Total Security 2017 and Malwarebytes Antimalware Premium, and there's no conflicts, which is a very important to check out as the first. If it is a "giveaway", don't install it, before you have checked, if there will be conflicts. As a golden rule, you can install 1 (one) antivirus program and one for ad/spy and malware. To make sure, you are well protected, you can do a scan with an online scanner as Eset Online scanner - a wise choise, if you ask me :-)

Eset Online scanner is freeware (choose the left one) : https://www.eset.com/us/home/online-scanner/
