I wonder if anyone can just use grep?

No One,

I think you need to be running Unix to be able to use grep don't you?

Reply   |   Comment by Springy  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

Springy,

Grep is available as a set of utils based off of the UNIX originals. I use grep all the time on Windows command line. Also, there are several Windows programs that emulate what grep does (e.g. WinGrep).

At the moment it's 49% for and 51% against this program. Which makes me wonder with a rating like that then why so many negative comments.
What would be useful is a program that looks inside a lot of text files on the hard drive to find a group of words.

Warning: The program does not give you the option of where to install.

For those with solid state c drives - you may wish to pass.

Regarding what file ByteScout Line Sorting Tool Business ( Business ? ! ? ) works on, it doesn't, it works on typed-in text or pasted-in text only.

Not very sophisticated for a 156 MB installation ( ! ), and some features fail, such as

-- [ Trim spaces ] leaves duplicate spaces.

-- [ Trim spaces ] apparently means [ Remove leading spaces per line, and leave one trailing space per line if there were one or more spaces at the end of a line, but ignore duplicate spaces within a line ].

-- [ Remove duplicates ] also leaves duplicate spaces, but considering the name of the program, it means [ Remove Duplicate lines ] -- yet whitespace differences, which are ignored by other tools, defeat [ Remove duplicate ( lines ) ] from seeing lines whose only differences are leading or trailing spaces as essentially the same:

There is no differentiation between line-tools and character-tools, we have to try each tool and see what they work on.

There is no highlighting what will be changes or has been changes or comparison between before and after.

At least you can [ Undo ] an apparently unlimited number of times, BUT, it will undo manually typed text until there is only one line remaining, whereupon, if you want your manually typed text back, simply [ Redo ] as many times as needed to have the program put your text back -- a re-typist, so to speak, if you want to see your typing come back on demand, perhaps there are creative ways to implement this in a screen capture, like watching the opening titles to "Murder She Wrote" TV show.

There is no search and replace!

It cannot convert CAPITALS to smalls or make Title Case, let alone CameL CasE, it works on lines or characters only, and cannot identify words as duplicates such as and and and and.

I don't want to waste my time checking if it knows
-- the difference between a line feed and a hard paragraph,
-- the difference between white space and spaces and hard-spaces,
-- the difference between optional hyphens and hard hyphens, and so on.

There are web pages where I can cut and paste errant text and fix ALL CAPS or aLL cAPS, which is my most egregious challenge.

See free [ convertcase . net ]

It offers:
-- [ Sentence case ]
-- [ lower case ]
-- [ UPPER CASE ]
-- [ Capitalized Case ]
-- [ aLtErNaTiNg cAsE ]
-- [ Title Case ]
-- [ InVeRsE CaSe ]

What I really need is a smart [ Caps Lock ] key fixer, then my majority reason for investigating programs like this will be gONE ( ! what's G-One ? ! ? ) -- free [ Toggler ] by Aestas Software is almost 18-years old and is becoming unreliable even in mere antique Windows 7, does anyone have alternatives to [ Toggler ] ?

It's easier for me to cut and paste messy lines of text into Microsoft Word ( or even Excel ) where I can easily
-- search and replace all sorts of things, including
-- replacing line feeds with hard returns,
-- eliminating duplicate paragraph markers,
-- eliminating duplicate spaces and spaces before and after paragraph markers,
-- replace whitespace with space,
-- fix curly quotes and curly apostrophes to straight,
-- replace ellipses with three periods,
-- replace em and double-em with hyphens,
and so on, all easily hot-keyed into a macro for a one-keystroke cleanup, accomplishing in one keystroke many things this program can't even do at all.

This is a cute free utility, a programmer's self-inflicted tool to fix their own programming errors, now released to the public, a tease to get us to check out the other offerings by the vendor, but it is not worth paying for until it has capabilities equal to or superior to MS Word ( which is often free or cheap ) and or free alternatives to MS Word.

Offering to toggle working on [ lines ] and or [ words ] and or [ characters ] would be a significant improvement.

All programs that works with text -- documents and spreadsheets and web-page editors -- already have better in-built capabilities to accomplish what this programs claims and fails to do.

Perhaps we need reminders of the search and replace tools and other smart line-savvy and word-savvy and character-savvy editing tools already in our possession under our fingertips in our existing programs.

Peter Blaise, I like your quote at the end. I still use WordPerfect-for-Dos 5.1 (a 25-year old programme) especially for multi-language work (including RTL) to do things I cannot do with any Windows programme unless with great difficulty and sometimes not at all. It is my word-processor par-excellence and I rarely use any other. I wanted to try x8 (see my other comment) but.... No version of Word has yet come up to match it. The main thing is that you can programme within in and make it do what YOU want while Word will only do what IT wants!

[ Zen ],

Microsoft once has a 60-page white paper on how MS Word could accomplish what WordPerfect offers, an attempt to legitimize MS Word in the minds of corporate purchasers and decision-makers who would not actually use the program themselves, but only sign off on a multi-thousand-seat purchase order, so no one actually read the white paper, but it was full of comparisons such as:

--- In WordPerfect, the following 2 keystrokes can be accomplished by the following 30 keystrokes in MS Word ...

--- In WordPerfect, the following feature ... cannot be accomplished in MS Word ...

And on and on and on and on for 60 pages, the most potent sales pitch for WordPerfect I'd ever read ... but as I said, no one read it, they just presumed that because the white paper existed, then MS Word must be equivalent to WordPerfect, and it worked ... along with Microsoft's illegal monopoly practices which earned Microsoft a felony conviction, but WordPerfect was essentially dethroned by then.

I still have customers who run their businesses on WordPerfect v5.1 for DOS ( with clever LPT redirection to use USB printers through Windows ), though I prefer v6.1, and heard of but did not acquire v6.2.

All versions of WordPerfect for Windows at least still have reveal codes, and many customers depend on it.

To clean a misbehaving and or infected MS Word document, I save as WordPerfect format, then re-import it, and, viola, the document suddenly becomes well-behaved and infection-free again.

Considering that versions of WordPerfect can be had used and new from $5US, there is scant little excuse for today's GOTD unsophisticated one-trick pony, and poor at it, for $20US.

I am confused. I find a lot of stuff in my apps directory that shouldn't be there. The program works but takes a lot of ram. Not good for me.

You don't need this 96MB package.
The are numerous free online text sorting tools.
You can check out TextFX Tools that is a plug in for Notepad++.

Since Giveaway site did not answer my question, I ask here: what is Giveaway download basket for? Just an ad, a shareware remains a shareware pr, when downloaded from the "basket", does it become freeware?

Reply   |   Comment by PaulF  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+11)

PaulF, Even worse, I tried to download from there Libre Office and WordPerfectx8, both allegedly free..
In both cases it took me to a static page from which I could not find any buttons to press except to purchase a non-free version. I tried several times, disabling a-v and so on, it seems the whole is a hoax. If not, GAOTD please tell us.

Reply   |   Comment by Zen  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

PaulF, I think the basket it just a group of a few programs that are always available... not just free for a day. Nothing downloads automatically when you click on the basket so go explore... you'll see what I mean :o)

The GOTD Basket works for me, but WordPerfect redirects to the not-free corporate side, but they do have 30-day trials at:

https ://www.corel. com/en/free-trials/?hptrack=mmtry

A Google Shopping search for WordPerfect will find you $5US new and used versions, and free downloadable versions are available occasionally with ardent searches.

Try different browsers to get the GOTD Basket to work, it seems to be a convenient clearing-house collection of useful programs:

[ Zen ],

The WordPerfect link in the GOTD Basket is NOT labeled [ FREE ].

The LibreOffice link works for me, and the home site is always available:

http ://www. libreoffice. org/download

Keep trying different browsers to compensate for bad web page designers!

Please, read my earlier made comment first...

- installed - I could not resist to install :-)

the good and the bad:

- after de-installing leaves more than 50 MB of junk...

- Tool uses an uncommon (and doubtful) installation goal :
c:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\ByteScoutLinesSorting
c:\Users\\AppData\Local\ByteScout...

- but wait:
at least in my Windows 10_x64 it left in c:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\ByteScoutLinesSorting the installer for this tool (and of course that was NOT scrambled with the GOTD software installer...):
the file name was "__installer.exe"

not good style and behaviour - but it just outlines and extends the notes of my first comment...

[ wosa ],

If revisit GOTD to add comments, and your prior GOTD comment was moderator-approved, then you can add supplemental comments under that, maintaining continuity.

Thanks for sharing your routine -- UNINSTALL effects and left-over debris, I'd forgotten to report on that for other of my GOTD experiences, GREAT POINT!

I must concede that I did not test this software... but what I thought and felt was this:

Uhh - where have all the good programming skills gone?...
A package with tools that could be programmed in some 10 KB blown up into a 96MB+ setup package... omg

I especially thought of a some small tools, that have build-in many of such features:

- EDXOR.exe, an editor in less than 50 KB(!) provides (among many special and useful possible tasks and a built-in help...) the ability to sort lines...
- good old search_and_replace tools (e.g., but not exclusively "sr.exe") can do ALL kind oft sophisticated replacements (and of course deleting, too) in just a few hundred of KB.

... that only for considerations and initial thoughts.
greetings to all ;-)

Unfortunately felt that a 64 bit copy of Windows 8.1 was not Windows 7 and above and therefore refused to install.

Update on this one.. went to the Bytescout site and downloaded a trial from there. This one actually provided a different error message that identified virus protection as the reason it hadn't installed. After changing privileges program installed (no choice where it went though) and seems to be working as expected.
