Too bad I cannot install it to my windows 10 x 32 bit. It says design for x64 processor only.

jugem,
There are a number of very good reasons for changing over to 64-bit Windows, which I won't elaborate. In the early days there were lots of problems with device drivers, but not these days.

There are several scripting programming languages -- a scripting language is different from something like C, C++, C# etc., basically because you create &/or run scripts that live as scripts, whereas the code you'd create in C++ for example gets compiled into files you run as software.

wikipedia[.]org/wiki/Scripting_language

Javascript is a Very popular scripting language commonly used for web sites & pages. And it's been expanded on over the years... Microsoft recently released v.2 of Typescript, which is a popular subset of Javascript. JSON both expands on & goes further than Javascript, & can for example replace XML.

wikipedia[.]org/wiki/JavaScript
neowin[.]net/news/typescript-20-now-generally-available
wikipedia[.]org/wiki/JSON
json[.]org/

Today's GOTD, JSONBuddy, helps you to create & edit JASON scripts or docs. Since JSON has been around for years, there's loads of info online on the different ways that you might use it, e.g. for your own web site.

mike, If security is not a concern, like surfing on HTTP sites, JSON is OK, but once you cross to HTTPS sites, JSON is not safe to use because it is easy to be hacked and there is where the money transactions are. I do not know any financial institution using it to do banking nor Government sites where personal info is held nor brokerage companies and so on.

mike,

JSON is a data format that can be used by Javascript, but can also be used by other languages and for other purposes.

Today's offering is not a scripting editor nor debugger.

Ginna, JSON is perfectly safe to use with HTTPS. It is a data format, much like XML, but easier to parse by client-side Javascript.

I work for a bank in the IT department and we were told that JSON is not safe in any system that uses cookies for authentication, therefore we switched to XML scripts. JSON can be fooled by hackers to direct its content to hacker's servers too, where the content can be seen at the same time.

The problem is Java run time that is not aware of the JSON owner and allows a direct tap of its current content to anyone requesting the script.

Reply   |   Comment by Herris  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+14)

Herris,

XML is not a scripting format, it is a data format, as is JSON. The main difference between the two is that JSON was designed to be parsed directly by Javascript, whereas XML is a general-purpose markup language.

If sent over SSL (ie, HTTPS), both data formats are encrypted and are susceptible to the same type of security concerns and attacks (ex: man-in-the-middle).

Cookies are used to store sign-on tokens and are not of themselves an authentication method (such as NTLM or kerberos).

I assume you mean Javascript, not Java, in your last statement: Java applets are very insecure and should not be used under any circumstances (well, perhaps for internal web apps they can be permitted, but under tight security). Most modern browsers turn Java off by default and the latest release of Java will disable applets.

As to your statement itself: if the transactions are done properly, there is no opportunity for someone to tap the content, unless they have done a man-in-the-middle attack and fooled with the server certificates, in which case, the data format doesn't matter, because they would have access to the unencrypted requests and replies.

Clemens,

Since the product is still offered for XP SP2, but must be 64-bit, what percentage of the market has XP SP2 64-bit?

Reply   |   Comment by Gary Smith  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Gary Smith, the software requires an API level of Windows XP SP2. In addition there is only a 64-bit build available. I guess the market share of Windows XP SP2 64-bit is quite low nowadays...

This installed OK and activated. I have not managed to explore the software much because SpyShelter warns me that JSONBuddy is trying to take a screen shot of my computer. I've done nothing with JSONBuddy that would lead to this request. I do not like this happening, so I have denied it and closed JSONBuddy.

I'll come back to it later on when I have more time, but my initial impression is very unfavourable because it tried to take a screen shot. What I have on my screen is my business, not some software developer's!

Nick H, I can clearly say that it is definitely not JSONBuddy that tries to take a screenshot of your desktop. However, thanks for your feedback and I will run SpyShelter to see if this happens for me too. Kind regards

Reply   |   Comment by Clemens  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Clemens, thanks for the quick reply. I will try your software again later today. It could be a false positive that SpyShelter warned me about. I will say though that I cannot remember SpyShelter making similar false warnings before.

When it happened I clicked on 'Deny' in SpyShelter, but I unchecked the box for it to remember this action, it instantly asked me again whether or not to allow a sceenshot, I denied this, it happened again and again until I closed JSONBuddy.

Reply   |   Comment by Nick H  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+10)

Nick H, I've opened JSONBuddy and taken a screenshot of the SpyShelter warning about JSONBuddy attempting to take a screen shot again. This request was initiated by moving the cursor over the Help drop down menu, which is probably what I did when this happened the first time earlier today. The SpyShelter dialogue box names explorer.exe as the parent process of JSONBuddy.exe for this action. I installed this software on a Win 7 64-bit computer.

I've sent an email with the screenshot to the developer's email address on their website.

Thanks for the offer software on Giveawayoftheday, it looks interesting.

Nick H, I'm sorry for this issue. The correct email address is office@xml-buddy.com The "tools" domain is outdated. Please try again and we get in contact with you.

Clemens, I've forwared the email to the other contact address mentioned here.

@giveawayofthe day - what happened to my other comment that I sent yesterday evening that was awaiting moderation? Is it still awaiting moderation or was it deleted? It didn't say anything bad about the site or the software, it gave a lot more details about the issue I'd previously discussed. I've got a screenshot of the message and the note stating 'awaiting moderation'.

Just downloaded and installed. Runs but cannot get it to work with the latest Java. Manually specified the jvm.dll file but that did not work, either.

Otherwise, looks like an interesting program. Tx!
