This looked really interesting, but then I realised it uses Java. No way is it safe to run Java on a Windows computer.

Iain, I think you are thinking of Java applets in your browser. That's unsafe, and disabled in most browsers. Using Java for desktop software is not more unsafe than having native software made in C++ or C#.

jAlbum, That is a perfectly valid opinion, but it is not one I agree with. In my view, Java is a security risk on Windows. If you produce a version that doesn't need Java, I'll be interested.

looks very nice. Installed to my Win10 (64bit) without any problem. Now I need to find a jAlbum app for my phone.

Downloaded, installed and licenced..will give this a go in next couple of days and give it a yea or nea.
To get the license was easy, and I know some are having issues, so here goes Windows version:
Download the GOTD folder. Once it has finished downloading, click on the completed download folder then click on "Readme". A readme.txt popup opens, and about 1/2 way down is "discount code". Copy that (ctrl+c) then go here :
https://jalbum.net/en/secure/license/type/Standard About 1/4 of the way down, to the left of "Total US $44" is a highlighted "Got a discount code" click on it, then paste (ctrl+V) the discount code you got from the "readme popup" then click "Get Discount". It will come back showing a price of US $0 but in small print show "up to ver 14.1" Don't worry about that. Proceed to fill in the "Create account", checkmark the box you have read their TOS (you can read it if you want to familiarize yourself with the can's and cannot's) then click "Get License". Next page, you can download the program and install it. At that point, you will be sent 2 emails, 1 with all your info and the other a confirmation email. Click on the "confirmation link", it will take you to a Thank you page which u can close
Open the program, upper left says "Sign In" click it, fill in your username and password you created in "create account" and it will pop up "Activation success"
Then try it out. I save the emails etc, from developers, in a folder in my email client just incase.

Still states UNLICENSED, 30 days remaining
Trying to prieview it, and I get
ERROR
Local access to the album's database file is blocked by your browser. This will not affect the uploaded album! Use jAlbum's built-in browser or FireFox for testing, or read here how to test albums in other browsers!

Reply   |   Comment by reghakr  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

reghakr, You need to activate the license in jAlbum to make it fully licensed.

The "error" you get when previewing some of the templates in an external browser is normal, so follow the instructions given in the error message.

Need help registering? Had to do it this way...go to site as it is in Read Me but it does not actually go there. Takes you to list where you click again. Now you're in the site on page you need. Standard is already marked. Here is important part...click on the code button and insert the code you got in the Read Me BUT DO NOT CLICK OR ENTER IT YET. Now fill in information for your account. Next you see credit card info FORGET THAT and go back up to where you put in code and NOW click/enter it. New page comes up but look to the right and copy the ID numbers . Go back to open program. Top bar menu go to Help>activation/license .Window opens put in ID code (Can't remember if I had to click it)and then click on open account. It will say activated. I tried the way they said to do it but did not work for me so after much trial and error this way worked...good luck!

Picture transitions in samples are very slow compared to Instant Gallery Maker which I currently use. I don't think this would work for the hundreds of pictures per gallery that I make now. I photograph car shows.

Reply   |   Comment by JIM  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

JIM, transitions work very differenty depending on the skin you've selected, so just try another skin. And it's usually not depending on the number of photos in your album. We've got many users with more than 10000 photos in their albums.

I've used the old free version for many years just to create the occasional family web photo album to host on my personal web site. It's great for that purpose - it produces a nice polished-looking and functional web photo album with easy customization. Note that some of skins are also extra cost.

First things first, it's a Java application and comes with 32bit and 64bit support, if you don't have Java installed on your PC, no problem, it comes with it, built around it.

Licensing comparison (Standard, Pro, Premium, Power) https://jalbum.net/en/purchase

After i opened it, i wasn't that impressed, tbh. It looked pretty empty and basic with a boring drag&drop area surrounded by a lot of nothing but after going into the Settings, it offered a lot of different options, where many of them depend on the "Skin and style" you use or select, which can be kinda confusing if you want to have certain features rather global, than unique based on said skin.

Options go as far as from thumbnail settings, structure (flat, alphabetical etc.), pages (like thumbnail linking), images (scaling and HiDPI etc.) to effects (text, logo, filters etc.), videos (up to 1080p), widgets (like counter, comments, etc. - requires free account, see https://jalbum.net/en/widgets/info and https://jalbum.net/en/signup) over more andvanced settings (like metadata, tagging, encoding etc.) to finally the option to change how the used skin will be used and appears and while that allows for certain options it also seems that these skin layouts are very unique as is and kinda recognizable, which can be seen good or bad. So a lot of features depend on the skin you use and vary based on that.

The biggest advantage is that you can upload all the stuff to your very own server or hoster (instead of certain hardcoded ones that may require additional payment for hosting) and you can preview and test out all possible changes, until you are happy with it, before you decide to make or upload the album.

I didn't spend that much time with it yet and created a simple album using the basic skin. It does what it claims, will probably play around with it more later on.

If you want a free alternative, check out Piwigo.

TK, Thanks - one of the most useful comments here. (I have 32 and 64 bit Java installed and works just fine, using the 64-bit one.)

I have used JAlbum software and its hosting service for about five years now. I have been happy with it. It's really strong point is the many skins it has - and each skin is functionally quite different from the other skins. (Changing colors and fonts is not a new skin.) Most skins are highly customizable, so your website does not have to look like anyone elses. JAlbum and skins are free if you use their hosting site. However, if you use the JAlbum engine (which is what you're downloading today) some of the third party skins charge separately. If you want to post a lot of pictures, with lots of options both on skins and accessibility I strongly recommend it.

Had to disable anti virus live scan to install. Went to web page as per Readme instruction and entered 100% in the Discount section - message came up on screen in red: "Invalid code. No matching discount."

What now? Please fix discount error.

TeeGee, please fix your copy'n paste skills. Code is working.

Reply   |   Comment by Bratwurst  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-10)

Bratwurst, the method is NOT working, I tried typing in 100%, tried just 100, tried adding a trailing blank, tried adding a plus sign, tried space ahead of the %, tried copying and pasting also, still get "Invalid code. No matching discount." The code simply does not work. After 10 tries or so, I would not trust the software to do anything correctly if they can't get a simple response to work on a web page.

Reply   |   Comment by Leo  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Leo, I made the same mistakes - the wording in the Readme file is confusing. Go to the bottom of the Readme file and you will find the discount code that has to be entered - by the way - this is beautiful software

Reply   |   Comment by TeeGee  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+6)

TeeGee, I see that now, it was below my preview of the readme, so I thought that "enter 100%" meant to enter that string. However how do you get around the error of "Ooops... We are terribly sorry but there seems to be a technical problem in our system. The jAlbum team is automatically notified about this problem."

The software downloaded and installed/activated with no problems on my Win 8, 64 Bit system.

Nothing too special but it does what it says.

License seems to be for 30 Days only, but can't be sure. The "information" pop=up says support is valid until 11/1/17. But no info on expiration. Hopefully they will pop in and elaborate.

Reply   |   Comment by DJ  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Alexa Bennett, I did read the read me file or else I would never have been able to activate it.

If it is a lifetime license I still don't see where it says that, but am VERY grateful to the JAlbum creators should that turn out to be the case! The pop-up information has no indicator of duration.

Just call me Old School and like to see this sort of thing explicitly mentioned someplace obvious.

...

I just took a second look at the page before posting this and it does mention it's good until March 9th 2019. So while it was visible to me this morning, I didn't expect it to be there. 1 Year is not lifetime (I hope!) but it's still a lot better than our 30 day and 90 day trials that show up a lot lately.

Thanks to all who tried to help, and to JAlbum for a fun toy I can play with for a full year.

Reply   |   Comment by Noah Body  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

wicul, Please see my reply to Alexa below.

It should be obvious that I read the read me because I activated it (as I said in my original post), however that information is not included there.

Thanks for trying to help though. But maybe you should double check the read me to be sure somebody actually missed something before acting in a condescending manner (and I know that sounds rude, but it really isn't meant to be) (I just couldn't think of a more polite way to phrase it).

Reply   |   Comment by Noah Body  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Noah Body, the license is for v14.1, but it doesn't expire so it's indeed a generous giveaway. We hope you'll eventually want to upgrade to v15 :-)

I used to use this back in the day (up to about 2009). It makes some good photo galleries although some of the themes are chargeable so worth paying attention when choosing. I thought it was free and they charged for hosting but I see that has changed...
Up to v9 - free
v10 and v11 - free for non-commercial use
v12 on - paid
Currently they are on v15.3 so this is the previous main version (https://jalbum.net/en/software/release-notes). My only question would be if any security holes have been subsequently fixed, I read the release notes and didn't see any sign of this.
Summary - IMHO worth a look.

Reply   |   Comment by JohnL  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+18)

JohnL, There aren't any security holes as far as we are aware of. We are running jAlbum on Java, but as it's a local bundled Java engine, it doesn't not pose any security threats to your computer. (I.e. it's not integrated into your browser)

Reply   |   Comment by David Ekholm  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

David Ekholm, Strictly it is a local bundled Java as you include an old version with the distribution, although as I have renamed the included Java directory (per the excellent comment above) and so am running the latest version (provided I remember to update the 64-bit version as well as the 32-bit version each time) that shouldn't be an issue. Although software that runs in Java can have issues that aren't Java-related. But as I said I see no sign of them so far...
BTW I'm glad you managed to monetise this enough to keep doing this, as I was a (relatively? 3rd Jan 2006) early adopter and did wonder whether it would stay the course.

Reply   |   Comment by JohnL  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

JohnL, Yes, jAlbum has been more sticky than I initially anticipated. Over 16 years now :-)

You may naturally update the bundled Java, but again, it poses no security concerns as long as it isn't integrated with your browser

Reply   |   Comment by David Ekholm  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

David Ekholm, good luck for the next 16... all the best!

Reply   |   Comment by JohnL  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

TK, This is the first time we receive this request, and your concerns are almost unique. Again a private bundled JVM does not expose the computer to the kind of security vulnerabilities as having the JVM integrated inside the web browser does. As far as I'm aware, all security reports have been relating to the browser integration. If you don't like the bundled VM, then you can edit "jAlbum.ini" and point to your System JVM instead of the bundled one.
