#55 Thank you for your response Suze. I did use Admin rights to do both. That's something I've always done on this laptop with Windows 7. However, I discovered that I had installed Batch Inpaint2.2 at some point and had forgotten about it. So I don't feel as if I've lost out too much. Perhaps it was a conflict between the two installations. My laptop seems to be functioning without any problems so I'll just have to wait until the next freebie which requires "activate" to find our if it was a one off. I sincerely hope so!

Further to my last comment - I have run checks on everything I can think of and my laptop has come up clean with no malware/ virus in evidence. I tried once again to install Inpaint. It installed perfectly but when I ran activate it again triggered crashes. I immediately shut down but from what I could see before it did all my plug-ins seemed to be affected. I feel quite sad as I have Inpaint on a Vista laptop and it works perfectly and I wanted to have the later version under my WIndows 7 laptop. Activate has not caused me a problem in the past and my laptop is functioning perfectly as far as I can tell. Leaves me kind of worried why this should happen
Save | Cancel
Colin, did you happen to both run and activate as an Admin? Sometimes that's the only way to successfully install some software. It might be too late for Inpaint, but good luck.

I'm a fan of Inpaint but this version is a backward step.
The main issue, and one that makes it unusable, is the lack of scroll bars. As others have mentioned, the new method for scrolling uses the mouse scroll wheel. Which is no use for a laptop user with no scroll wheel. So if you zoom in you can't move the image at all (if they don't want scroll bars, simply add a right click drag feature).
Secondly, it's actual inpainting seems to have taken a backwards step too with noticeable edges to the inpainted areas. This was never an issue with previous versions.
A shame, but hopefully can regain it's former glory in some future version.

Before installing today's giveaway, Inpaint 7.1, I scanned GOTD's zipped folder with 4 different anti-virus/anti-malware programs. (I always do that.) All 4 showed that it was clean. After extracting the zipped folder's contents, I scanned the extracted files. Again, all 4 anti-virus/anti-malware programs showed that they were clean.
However, after I ran the Setup.exe file, within seconds of the installation finishing, my main anti-virus/anti-malware program, which I use for real-time protection, popped up a threat alert flagging C:\Program Files\Inpaint7\Inpaint.exe. It reported the threat type as "Gen:Variant.Symmi.82515."
Seeing the threat alert, I uploaded the Inpaint.exe file to VirusTotal. It had been scanned previously, so I had the site freshly "Reanalyze" it. Here's the link to the results:
https://www.virustotal.com/#/file/a15f4e059e23dfd42b29e3380c1e451051350e796c422dd8ee6fba88982ac1b6/detection
11 out of 67 scanners, including Bitdefender, F-Secure, and Ad-Aware, reported malware in the file, usually the same "Gen:Variant.Symmi.82515." Among the 56 that reported the file clean were Symantec, Avira, Kaspersky, Avast, and AVG.
If Inpaint 7.1's executable is really clean, the publisher, Teorex, should contact the makers of the scanners that detected malware in it to discover the cause(s) of the false positives.

Love this program - I have the paid version on my desktop and today's free offering on my Win 10 tablet. Installation has been straightforward and simple, and I use it frequently.
In this new version 7.1 I don't like the lack of scrollbars to help move the image. When I am working on a picture and am zoomed in, without the scrollbar I cannot easily move the picture while still zoomed to extend an area that I am touching up. In addition, when I zoom out to see the entire picture the image is not centered in the workspace. Without the scrollbars there is too much time wasted zooming in and out when you are trying to move the image.
If you are determined to not have the scrollbars then you desperately need a grab tool that lets you grab the image and move it around while still zoomed in. Also you need a button to automatically center the image in the workspace - but that would be adding two new features that wouldn't be needed if you kept the scrollbars in the first place.

Can we get confirmation this is working on Windows 7-32-bit?
Save | Cancel
Dave, I think the problems are XP related (even with SP3 and up to date dotnet stuff) not 32/64 bit. I think the main executable is hard wired to run on Vista or later (may be wrong, but I think it has to do with which version (of Visual Studio?) it is compiled against), and I suspect the installer may have both a 32 bit and 64 bit copy inside, and it installs whatever it thinks it is running on.

1) Download the zip file.
2) Extract all the files in it to a separate folder.
3) Disable your antivirus.
4) Run setup. If you're not already using an admin account, right click and run as administrator.
5) UNCHECK launch app and click Finish.
5(a) Reenable your antivirus.
6) Run activate like you ran setup (as admin). MAKE SURE Inpaint is NOT running when you do this!!! If you did step 5 and unchecked the launch box you should be fine.
7) Navigate to the folder the program is in (C:\Program Files\Inpaint7 for 64 bit Windows; I would guess it's C:\Program Files (x86)\Inpaint7 for 32 bit.)
8) Double click Inpaint.exe to run the program.
9) If you want a desktop shortcut (and who doesn't), right click Inpaint.exe and choose "Send to Desktop (create shortcut)".
This is a great program for what it does. One of my all time favourite GOTD apps and glad to have discovered the company and its other tools through GOTD. I just tried a simple edit to make sure it works so cannot comment on any changes from previous versions. Thanks GOTD and TeoreX.

No horizontal or vertical bar when I enlarge an image by zoom.
It is not possible to zoom in the sides of the image.
I think this is a beta version of Inpaint software. :(
Save | Cancel
Gruko, I replied to a similar comment earlier today. The zoom feature will center on the part of the image where your mouse cursor rests. If you have a scroll wheel on your mouse, move your cursor to a corner and scroll the wheel up to zoom in. The image will zoom in to that corner. This is kind of a new feature that seems to be mimicking how pinch-zoom works on phones and tablets. It's an odd thing for a desktop program.
Save | Cancel
Gruko, It has a new form of auto scroll. Put your mouse on the area you want to work on and use the mouse wheel to enlarge and it will enlarge into that section. I liked the scrollbars as well, but this is progress.
Save | Cancel
Chris, it's not progress if you don't have a mouse wheel (ie a laptop user). It's literally the opposite of progress.

1) Deactivate your anti-virus for a couple of minutes
2) Install Setup with Run as Administrator then don't allow the program to run if 2A needed
2A) If there is an activate, run it also as Administrator
3) Run the program, in some rare cases you might need to reboot

Save | Cancel
Tam Ng,
Maybe email TeoreX support? Support e-mail is: support@theinpaint[.]com
If the old version de-activated I would think that the key's registry value was deleted, but since the new version isn't activated, maybe nothing was written in its place, or the wrong value was entered. If Activate.exe has permission to alter [remove?] the old value, it should have permission to replace it, so the only thing I can think of at the moment is that maybe something stopped Activate.exe from completing (?). Maybe it was your security software, though usually when that happens I *think* Activate.exe doesn't do anything, but I could be wrong.

Try System Restore. This should return you to position immediately before you installed v7.1, i.e. with v6.2 installed. (On Windows 10, Start - Control Panel- Recovery - Open System Restore. HTH.

Laxative, Sometimes, depending on your browser, a temporary file is created. When the download is complete the file is moved to the final actual name. Best you can do with Corel in my experience is get on their mailing list, always check software sales [e.g. Fry's, Newegg, Amazon], & be patient. You do need to be aware of the current version however, since sales on old versions are unfortunately common. If you already have one or more Corel apps installed in win10, you'll probably also get pop-up offers, without any Corel apps running. While I'm still waiting for a deal on PaintShop Pro Ult X10 & VideoStudio Pro Ult 2018, I've been able to pick up the last several versions, while they were still current, for around $25 each.

Hi, I wouldn't exactly call Inpaint 'jack of all trades', but it has its uses and it's worth keeping in one's photo Toolbox!! - provided it doesn't play around spoiling other fixtures on users desktops, Installation allows earlier versions of Inpaint to stay intact (especially if kept on different locations on PC), a.s.o. We had a shedload of eager Registry 'snoopers' of lately, making us feel on edge when we realize something is suddenly 'undone' without our control or permission..
Hope TeoreX doesn't follow similar trend! Backing up Registry beforehand in fear of changes done when installing from the same Vendor is really not an option, gift or purchase, sorry.
Since last Giveaway (v.6.2) it improved few things, as seen here:
https://www.theinpaint.com/download.html#changelog
That said - I have few of their Software and enjoy using daily (like Folderico for instance) and would like to carry on with my support to TeoreX. Don't let me down please!
Save | Cancel
fran,
In the past TeoreX has always played nice with very good manners. The apps, e.g. Inpaint, are made up of a single .exe file that can be placed anywhere on your drive(s), with registry entries limited to a single TeoreX key. The registration or activation key, in the past at least, has always been overwritten by the new key, but the developer has been unusually nice in making sure new keys also work with older versions. :)
Save | Cancel
I installed this program a couple of years ago and found it very good especially for background removal. Unfortunately, I had some problems with the PC requiring Windows re-install and could of course not re-install/activate the Giveaway.
I do appeal to the publisher or GOTD or both, to enable reactivation even after the giveaway offer has passed, as long as one has downloaded the set-up file.
This is absolutely possible like on a couple of other Giveaway sites. I can in the case of Windows reset, etc ... re-install giveaways, as long as you still have the valid key, unless it was for a limited period.

xprt007, the idea behind getting it for free is, you get a chance to try the program including all the options without any restrictions. It's unfortunate that you had problems with you PC and lost the program, but you milked the program for two years and I would thing that's more to decide if you like it. The price is more than reasonable, buy it. What you are asking the programmer to do, they may as well give it away for free and I'm sure they are not in the business to do that.

For some reason the scrollbars are missing. How do I scroll an enlarged image to fine tune the Inpainted area? All of the older versions have it.
Save | Cancel
Cheis, the new version uses a kind of smart zoom. If you have a mouse with scroll-wheel, move your cursor to the part of the image you want to enlarge and then rotate your mouse scroll-wheel up. The image will zoom centered where the mouse cursor is pointed. It takes some getting used to and is not as accessible as traditional scroll bars. Perhaps the developer will take this comment to heart.

Teorex products are often more trouble that they are worth which is a pity because sometimes they do what they are supposed to do quite well. As v7 has a new inpainting algo 'neural networks...' I was keen to give it a go but no dice, doesn't work on XP despite what it says above.
Inpaint as regulars will know is keen on fraticide: install a latter version and it will kill its older siblings. The work around is to save the relevant registry keys that contain the serials before doing anything else. That meant when my Inpaint 7 install (which wouldn't run on my dearly beloved XP machine) killed my v6 installation, I could uninstall v7 and resurrect v6. Phew!

As usual, the "Activate.exe" is hot! (VirusTotal).
This is the main reason I' not interested in softwares without serial numbers.
I know that a lot of you don't care about virustotal scores and can say that "there are false positives", but are you realy sure.?!
Save | Cancel
ChrisH,
Not so. VirusTotal gives it a clean bill of health, 60 out of 61 scanners, with only an obscure one going red.
https://www.virustotal.com/#/file/e29b42c6101ce6cd0efdcf25e53669095df444a73db3c7eb8b81af5053bfe2fc/detection
The above correction in the interests of fairness, and so as not to deter people who would find this tool useful.
As for the tool's performance, the previous version was generally doing a fairly good job, but no automatic tool can deal with difficult cases.
Save | Cancel
ChrisH,
GOTD has a sterling reputation, which is what I/we rely on.
"... "there are false positives", but are you realy sure.?!"
FWIW, there are so many possible threats out there that you can never be "Really Sure" about anything, regardless VirusTotal. One of the vulnerabilities February's cumulative patch fixed allowed you to become infected if you received an email -- you didn't have to open or run an attachment, you didn't have to open the email, & you didn't even have to preview the email. Also please note that VirusTotal is based on submitted reports of malware rather than hard evidence. Could some company deliberately submit false positives? It's happened. Like Paul says in the movie of the same name: "Sometimes you just gotta roll the dice."
Save | Cancel
ChrisH, Yes, I'm sure. The reason it gets flagged is because the .exe is encrypted. Virus scanners can't detect what they can't see, so therefore flag it as suspicious (its not normal for .exes to be encrypted).
This site has been around for many years, and as far as I'm aware, despite giving away sofware every day, haven't released an .exe which has had a virus in it.

Behram Cooper,
"Inpaint is less accurate than other paid softwares"
I would politely disagree. An app like P/Shop uses its algorithms, while Inpaint uses theirs. Sometimes one works a bit better than another, but in my experience that's most often based on the image itself, & what you're asking or expecting the software to do.
