Well, everything nice and easy, but I just can't get to register my Icon Constructor 3. What is the product-key for this, because my own won't work! I've looked everywhere!

Please help me with this, for I need this program very hard!

#185 - You're getting it wrong, it's fully possible to understand the point (think most people do really), still you can make fun of the "buying" part. It's really interesting to focus on something else than the main whining, that boring part of focusing we gladly leave to you.

The simple and straightforward interface belies Icon Constructors powerful capabilities. The uncomplicated user interface is intuitive and easy to operate with that 'done! ... At the touch of a button' feel to it. What's more, it produced quite wonderful icon's of fantastic quality. I've used quite a few icon software packages in my time but I have a sneaky feeling that Icon Contructor will become a permanent utility on my PC. Top marks IconContructor.com. Thank you GoTD.

#181 - Right-click on the folder and go to properties. If you have XP, you should have a Customize tab. Otherwise, Google for "custom folder icon".

#182 - Yes. Except that commenting on isn't voting.

#184 - It's only funny if you miss the point. It's all fine and dandy to make fun of whiners, but unfortunately I don't find it funny.

The following is one of the true mysteries of the universe. Voting thumbs up to software while posting comments like these.

"Nice bit of software. I am looking forward to playing with it." "I might try the program, just for the fun of it." "I will definitely try this software!"

Shouldn't one usually try something BEFORE voting on it? Hello?

Before downloading software from gold-software.com, as suggested in post #168 by "Anonymous", please check the file's test details at SiteAdvisor.com in the download details section. They found plenty of adware and spyware in files downloaded from there, and the site links to many other unsafe sites. Personally I would not download anything from there, but anyone who would should use caution. The site also is named suspiciously similar to goldfiles.com which is safe site. :/

On today's software, nifty little tool and the registration process was a breeze. It's true there's no help file in the program itself, but the interface is very intuitive, has an instant preview, and there's plenty of help at the developer's site for anyone wanting documentation. Of course few really need such software, but it sure is fun to have. lol

Cool Tool.

Chalk me up as in highly in favour of the registration method. Means I can re-install it after I have to do my periodic Windoze reinstall (unlike all the others that will no longer be useable). Please keep doing it this way.

As others have pointed out, not going to be used much, but nice to have. And as 42 and 54 said, basically I hate GUI icons, but since we have to live with them this is a nice tool.

I'm not terribly keen on this User Interface. It has problems with my favorite tool, FileBox eXtender. FBE does not recognize the buttons in the upper left corner, they overlap (sigh).

Win XP SP2

I tried the maximize option in the drop down menu from the button in the upper left corner. Oops, that didn't work very well. It just tiled the same app window 4 times, well partial display of 3 additional non functional graphics of the window. Remove the option of fix it. When I do the maximize, it does not "play well" with my task bar. It does not recognize that I've moved my task bar to the top of the screen. There is no way of setting back to normal view, have to shut and restart the app.

Where is the online help?!? For most part it has been "intuitive", but I'd like to know more details behind some of the options. ie as someone mentioned, apparently the app will store more than 1 resolution of the image in the ICO file. I had no idea that was happening. The help button in the upper right corner only displays "Help About". None of the other buttons display anything else! Either make them functional, disable them, or take them off the dialogs.

I'm not keen about the selection of the default style, I'd prefer it started with the simplest one.

In advanced settings, sharpen settings, what does opacity do (ie help file!)? I understand the word, but when I move the slider, I see no difference in the previews above it.

#161 and anyone else still having trouble - the number you need is in the readme: NC3-9T7TK-U7B7U-XXV5C-77HJN-HSM9H. As I have asked before, I don't know why some of you earlybirds (yeah, I'm talking to you, the "first poster" crowd !!) can't just jot down the number for the ones who have trouble with the registration process. Some people are so new they can't begin to understand some of these explanations, so give them a break and help them along.

Also, check out "www.gold-software.com/desktop12.html" for a long list of other software (some freeware and shareware included). Their first offering, "ABB Image Icon Converter 5.1" looks like a good program to tweak what you makee with "Icon Constructor".
Lastly, thanks to all the commentors who give other links to compare or contrast with the daily offerings - if you check them out, day by day you will build a knowledge base to better utilize your computer. I also appreciate the ones who put in a clickable reference. Believe me, if I knew how, I would have done it on mine.

I also wanted to mention - there may soon be a huge influx of users, as I gave the site name to one of the Dell techs who manage the technical support phone lines and asked him to spread it around. He was most interested!

Finally, thanks GOTD team. Keep up the good work!

This is a really fun program and I am sure a great tool for those interested in creating a unique or fun icon for web pages, a new program or just a fun customization of unique icons. I have no real professional need or experience in the area of creating icons, but this is a powerful no brainer tool. You have created a program that will quickly and easily create icons with a short or essentially no learning curve. The package is extremely user friendly and walks you through the process. No fooling around with bit nonsense, this program does it all for you.

I simply choose a picutre I like, a shape I like, the size I want and all options are presented without accessing menues or submenues. The only problem I encountered was remembering where I saved the icon. Great program and any company would really miss out if they overlooked this icon creation software.

It was worth installing Icon Constructor for the entertainment value in watching my wife's reaction to discovering her folder icons now consisted of pictures of her holding a Costa Rican sloth. I'm baffled why the program's designers created question mark symbols which do nothing when you click on them. It would be nice if GOTD would provide a registration key in their instructions in future offerings as they did with this one.

#159 - AbnInfantry, thanks for bringing BillW50's ludicrous remarks made late in the Advanced WindowsCare thread to my attention. I've disabled System Restore on all my PCs since 2004 and never looked back. When I attempted restorations, I never knew whether to clutch a rabbit's foot, prayer beads or chant in Tibetian to help out the process. I wish I had a dollar for every time I received a message reporting System Restore had failed to work (there I go again being "greedy"). I wonder how I can have two full image backups (of a 250GB hard drive with over 50 GB on it) stored on a 60GB portable drive with plenty of room to spare? BillW50, the resident electrial engineer/rocket scientist said that's impossible. It must be magic! I use imaging software to make drive backup images multiple times every day and use my PC for other tasks while doing so. Since BillW50 said this can't be done, it must be more of that magic stuff.

#128 - BillW50, you were actually a genuine rocket scientist? Whoever would have guessed? Based on the content of many of your GOTD posts, I'd assumed you were a disgruntled Fuller Brush salesman, inebriated rodeo clown or BATF bottomfeeder. You succeeded in removing any lingering doubts I may have had regarding NASA's o-ring/Challenger disaster. Good luck in getting a handle on how drive imaging software actually works.

This was my first ever downlaod from your site and it's too cool for words! Didn't have any trouble registering, I saved the zip file to my computer, opened it after it downloaded and in the Readme file they have a registration number you can use if nothing else works. Considering that Data thing was blank, this number came in handy.
My first icon took 3 seconds to make!
I'm going to play with this more over the weekend when I have more time.
Thanks great freebie!

I don't anticipate having much use for Icon Constructor but from my brief exposure it seems like a decent enough program for people with a need for it. I do appreciate the fact the registration key may be used for future installations.

BillW50, #123: After you repeatedly insulted him and baselessly questioned his honesty, it's a real mystery why BladedThoth wouldn't do a favor for you. [guffaw]

Since I suffer from a pathological inability to suffer fools gladly, I can't passively let your snide, reprehensible, inaccurate remarks directed at Karen in yesterday's AWC thread go unanswered. On numerous occasions, System Restore has failed on multiple PCs for me. I turned off System Restore in disgust long ago and now rely on utterly dependable FirstDefense-ISR. Contrary to what you wrote, making a partition image snapshot is NOT "very time consuming" nor does it "take the computer down during this process." I can create a new drive snapshot in the time it takes for some GOTD programs to download via dial-up; snapshot updates only require a few minutes. I have no idea where you got the bizarre, false notion a PC can't be used during this period. While I prefer FD-ISR, I also use Acronis True Image for making weekly backups. I routinely use my PC while True Image or FD-ISR are running in the background. I can install and experiment with a score of programs then just reboot, press the F1 key, and I'm immediately back into a different snapshot and don't have to bother uninstalling any unwanted programs (or receive a message saying System Restore didn't work). If a registry cleaning program deletes some necessary items, no worry; press F1 and I'm back in business as if it never happened.

As far as your notion an image of "a 320GB HD with 2 GB on it" "still needs 320GB of space," that's downright ABSURD. Besides using a second internal hard drive to store backups, I also have multiple FD-ISR and True Image snapshots/images of my 160 GB primary drive (with over 49 GB containing the OS, programs, and data) stored on a portable 80GB hard drive with plenty of space left over. RollbackRX makes snapshots which require far less space than those created by FD-ISR or True Image. Be sure and drop by Wilders Security Forums and tell the folks there how stupid they are for using drive imaging software instead of reliable [snicker] System Restore. You recommended ERUNT which is just a registry backup. Talk about apples and oranges. When you have a complete hard drive failure, let us know how ERUNT and System Restore worked for you. In the meantime, Karen and I (two non-rocket scientists) will be back in operation in a few minutes thanks to our BillW50-scorned imaging software with our OS, programs, and data files intact.

Sorry to say, but this is LAME! It only supports up to 48x48 icons!?!?!?!? Pretty useless. It needs support for 128x128 at least. These icons would look like junk on Vista, there are other, much better programs out there. It also sorely lacks user control. Not the best I've seen from GAOTD.

Just wanted to say to the GOTD team that I for one prefer this new reg method; it seems more foolproof in that there are multiple ways of registering, so if one method doesn't work, you have a couple of other ways to do so.

As for the app: it's not something you'd use everyday, but it works. You can actually have fun by associating people's faces with apps & filetypes on your system.

Lastly, to anyone frustrated about "I'm 1st" posts: just ignore them (ie scoll down one page to skip those comments: any comment made within several minutes of release is always useless). If not, silently pity those losers who stay up till 3am just to do so, only to find out they weren't first.

Thanks to the GOTD team for giving us some variety in the offerings!

Program seems pretty solid. Slow to load, but otherwise does what's expected and comes with some nice styles. Too bad some of them are the US flag and they could only be bothered with about five other flags. (Where's the Canadian flag, eh? We're right above you guys. Y'know, north. Yeah, above you on that globe... I said above... NORTH. ... nevermind.)

Zorro (#137), BillW50 (#124) - Talk about missing the big picture. It's not so much buying but the activation process that he doesn't want to go through.

#134 (Anonymous) - It's not us geeks who do it, but the upper management that say "Make this or you don't get paid". =/

BTW-if you plan on putting this program on more than one computer in your house then I found the easiest way to activate (register) it was to just use the key code used on the 1st computer you used to set this software up. I always run these on my old desktop first, THEN onto my brand new laptop, just in case. If somebody can find out how many of these programs can be activated in a household and if it is a # higher than 2, then I will give you the code I have for registaion. When I found it finally the first time after much hair pulling I saved it into a notepad.txt. Used it today after installing it onto my laptop and no prob. Either leave me a message here or goto:
http://triquetra5100/blogspot.com and email me from there. I plan on going there to edit my template some more after this and adding a new post about this software so you could leave me a comment and if there is a way I will either comment back to you or you could sign your name with a hyperlink of your email addy.

I approached this program with great trepidation after reading all the comments, but breezed right through it! I was pretty much led through the whole thing which made me wonder why one commenter asked about the "convoluted activation procedure". I believe this will be very useful. Unlike some commenters, I do find icons helpful. I have very little interest in screensavers or audio assistance-type software. I'd love to see more graphics stuff. Great job, GOTD! P.S. who cares who has first posting? Being awake at 3:00AM doesn't make anyone special, just another one of us insomniacs or weird-shifters. Sorry, guys, I do count on your comments!

I don't really see the point of this. GIMP, a free program, can do the same thing (and much more) and so can other programs (for example, Adobe Photoshop). Why clutter up your computer with an obsolete program?

No offense or anything. I'm sure its handy somehow if you don't have GIMP or another digital art program.
