Hey Alex, I AM NOT HAPPY
I only had enough time to download and install the program with about half an hour to spare and I only read the top half-dozen comments.
BUT during that half-hour period I did also open the HippoEDiT HOME PAGE - and saw no mention of any special price or offer, as well as the Beta Version Test page
I only found out that You had this excellent little program, On Sale at a discounted price only AFTER I had read all of the USER COMMENTS and REPLiES! and Your reply was listed 6/sixth from the bottom of the page
There was NO MENTiON anywhere else on the webpage ABOVE THE COMMENTS SECTiON or (even in the downloads ReadMe.txt file), that the program was being offered for sale yesterday during the promotion period and I for one am UNHAPPY about that because I like what I have seen so far and I WOULD Like to buy a License.
SO I presume that you may not reply to my comment or offer me the discounted price now that the GOTD DEAL HAS EXPiRED.
QUESTiON 1 : so when do You anticipate releasing Version 2 ?
and
QUESTiON 2 : do you anticipate there will be another chance to buy the program at a discounted price before Version 2 becomes available?
Regards,
Wally

@Alex from Hippoedit or GAOTD team do you have the 64 bit version of this giveaway build or should I just install the 32 bit bundle on my 64 bit system that I have already downloaded so far?
Save | Cancel
Hi TK,
no, the x64 build is not given for promotion. Only x32. But x32 will work on x64 system without problems.

Alex from HippoEDIT, 32bit builds shellreg.dll cannot be used under 64bit build windows. as a 64bit program (64bit Explorer.exe) cannot launch a 32bit DLL but we can extract the 64bit shellreg.dll from the 64bit installer using a tool such as 7-zip and replace the 32bit shellreg.dll in the giveaway builds folder BUT the opposite problem occurs where the 32bit hippoedit.exe cannot register or unregister (run) the 64bit shellreg.dll My workaround is to register the 64bit shellreg.dll manually using regsvr32.exe from an elevated cmd.exe console.
Same technique can be used to de-register the shell extension using the regsvr32.exe /u switch on the shellreg.dll.

Since we already have Sublime, Atom, and now VS Code, there doesn't seem to be much of a reason for this. What can it do that the big three can't?
Save | Cancel
It's worth today's price of free but not the usual price of 40 euros.
Add support for syntax checking for more programming languages (C#, python, etc).
Add a simple language for macros (like Notepadd++ or UltraEdit)
Save | Cancel
Art Metz, it does support many programming languages including C# see File | New also look in Tools | Syntax Settings menu which clearly shows many programming languages being supported including Python, etc.
Also it does have a scripted macro language using XML file structures
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
Obviously the formating is lost above due to the comment tag filtering.

Does anyone know of an editor that will translate French to English by just hovering the cursor over a word?
Save | Cancel
Hi dan,
you may use Google Tools plugin for that:
http://wiki.hippoedit.com/plugins/google_tools

Alex from HippoEDIT,
Unfortunately there is no target language of English so the plugin id of no value to me.
Thanks anyhow,
Dan

Hi dan,
English is in, but it is just not visible, because of UI bug - vertical scroll bar is not shown.
Set focus on the combo and scroll up with arrow keys.
I have sent you a screenshot with a result.
I will fix the bug in next builds.

Terms of the licence state that a second portable copy may be made but software refuses to install this despite separate software download under same email name. Can the developer confirm that this offer does not include the use of a portable USB version?
Save | Cancel
Hi Colin,
theoretically, there are no limits on the second installation of portable copy. It may be only problematic to select a portable installation way if you have already installed the app for the current user. Just uninstall it an reinstall as portable. Then you can install it on any amount of USB drives.
But due to a specific way of registration for GAOTD version, you need to execute the installer on each machine you plan to use HE during the promotion time. Standard version does not have such limitation.
Best regards,
Alex

Colin, if you want to install a portable edition as far as I have found it ... that you cannot have it already installed on the host system for the setup installer to offer the installer mode choices.
It either reads the current installs settings and duplicates those and disables the other install options like if installed for current user it will disable All users or portable options or if installed for all users it will disable current user and portable options or if no previous installation is in place it will enable all possible installer options.
To start again you will have to uninstall first and then install the portable edition to a removable drive, and IF I recall correctly the built in license may be tied to the drives serial number that it is installed on when portable or formally installed to a hard drive.
Obviously if you do make a portable build then deselect all the system integration options like desktop and quicklaunch and start menu shortcuts and all the explorer integration and browser integration like IE page source viewer options as that it is not sensible to integrate a portable edition into the host operating system and applications!
Technically you should be able to create several licensed portable USB "installs", as many as individual flash or usb hard drives you have, then finally install it fully on the host operating systems you have about the place.

Hi Colin,
probably it is a limitation of GAOTD wrapper. You may just do the first installation on a USB drive and then copy the content of installation directory on to the second drive. It shall work.

you do not need it - the application shall work as registered directly after installation. The installer is pre-registered for GAOTD.

Hmm, seems like it's not supposed to work on 64-bit systems, but it does anyway. I'll keep it for now, not expecting to use it much but never hurts to have something like this on hand and I'm just feeling too lazy to download Notepad++ or any of a dozen other free editors. Windows 10 Home Edition, 64-bit, opens fine, no complaints.
Save | Cancel
Therese S., they do produce a 64 bit build , no idea if there is a 64 bit giveaway build but most 32 bit programs do work fine on complete 64 bit windows installations. They may not work on 64 bit WinPE systems as that does not include the 32 bit substructure needed.

You cannot install as portable (option is disabled). So, if you want to keep the registry clean, don't install. Not that it's a bad software per se but it makes uninstallation difficult because of too many registry keys. Iobit uninstaller wants to delete 1774 keys, which is ridiculous to say the least and another proof some developers still need to learn how to install Windows software properly 22 years after the registry was first used as it is nowadays. What a pity.
No changelog between this version 1.60.50 and a previous GOTD version 1.60.31. I thought this version would be an improvement to the previous one (this product lacks some essential features). I'm not really disappointed though. Uninstalled.
Save | Cancel
papin, which essential features do you feel this product lacks?
There is are lists of changes for various builds at posts in topic http://forum.hippoedit.com/beta-version-test/
and previous giveaway build was 1.60.44.0 not 1.60.31 that was an even earlier giveaway.
Personally I would suspect IObits uninstaller to be more to blame in announcing 1774 registry entries to delete... I would not use any IOBits products, I don't trust them as developers due to their past activities.

Hello papin,
HippoEDIT does not store settings in the registry. The registry is only used for file registration, com object registration for scripting and etc. So, those minimal settings that require Windows to work properly with a software.
To get editor installed in portable mode, you need to uninstall a local copy of it first. Details you can find on the wiki: http://wiki.hippoedit.com/options/user_directory
If one needs to see changes between builds, it can be found on the forum: http://forum.hippoedit.com/beta-version-test/
Best regards,
Alex
Save | Cancel
papin, you can install it portable but you have to do the portable "installation" on a host system that does not have the editor already installed on it or you must uninstall it first then create the portable USB drives installs first then re-install the program back on the host system.

What I love most of this editor is the clever way it handles dictionaries. However it is a bit expensive and seems to be abandoned. Notepad++ is a serious free competitor whose last version is 7.5.4 released just now 01 Jan 2018. Happy New Year!
Save | Cancel
Luis, this is certainly not abandoned see http://forum.hippoedit.com/beta-version-test/ for recent development work, in fact this is a pre-release build especially for this giveaway as it comes pre-activated which is why it has to be protected by the giveaway setup.exe/gcd wrapper
Save | Cancel
Hi Luis,
just to give you a more info: HippoEDIT is single text editor I know, that can handle mixed documents and check spelling for them. For most English speaking users it is not a real benefit, but for not English speaking it a really helpful feature.
And yes, the development is not abandoned. 1.6x is just a stable branch, that does not get significant updates, only bug fixes, and small features. Major changes are in 2.X branch, that can be tested by registered users.
BR,
Alex

Hasn't this been a GAOTD before, same version (1.60) but the installer size has changed a bit? Or is this in some way a new offering?
Save | Cancel
krypteller, Thanks. Looking further on the HippoEdit website/forum I found this which lists the versions/changes/improvements, some of which appear non-trivial so worth updating to the current version it seems: http://forum.hippoedit.com/beta-version-test/?PHPSESSID=kd13r4mu11mujeci9nb9021of5

Jon Smith, previous giveaway was 1.60.44 build date 23/02/2017 so yes this is a new minor update, sadly they do not seem to list minor version update changes so cannot say what is new in 1.60.50

TK,
A "change history" may be behind the forum pages with access reserved for registered users (link in 2nd comment):
http://forum.hippoedit.com/general-discussion/he-changelog/msg2190/
...but this page (Beta Version Test (minor)) lists some recent changes/updates for v1.61.x which suggests that product development is not "dead" as others suggested:
http://forum.hippoedit.com/beta-version-test/
Save | Cancel
It's a great editor! Too bad there wasn't any development for 3 years.
Save | Cancel
M. H., check out the minor version number and build dates in the About panel previous giveaways build date was late feb 2017 NOT 2015! This developer does not change the marketing version number on bug fix builds only on major feature additions, a bit like how Microsoft does with windows issuing monthly bug fixes that do not change the windows version number we see at all. There certainly is ongoing development of this product with their latest build date on their website being 05.04.17 according to the page https://www.hippoedit.com/download.php?lang=en with the next version 1.61 being in beta release.
Save | Cancel
TK, OK, thanks for the info. I find it suboptimal of the developers to not transport the message of program improvements via the visible version numbering.
Save | Cancel
M. H., well at least the first parts of the versioning match, unlike windows most with true version numbers bearing zero relationship with what the products are called:
Windows NT 5.0 (Windows 2000) (1997-1999)
Windows NT 5.1 (Windows XP) (2001)
Windows NT 5.2 (Windows Server 2003, Windows XP x64) (2003)
Windows NT 6.0 (Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008) (2006)
Windows NT 6.1 (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2) (2009)
Windows NT 6.2 (Windows 8, Windows Server 2012) (2012)
Windows NT 6.3 (Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2) (2013)
From https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT
At least MS have updated the NT versioning to match the OS name... but they too do not transfer the minor builds to the windows marketing name.
At some point it would be good if Alex incremented the public facing minor version number to 1.61 instead of hiding minor feature and bug fix updates by relegating them to the held back build numbers. As he is concealing all the good development activity going on and giving a false sense or abandonment or inactivity as shown by the many assumptions posted by users who were fooled by the current public facing versioning lack of change for the past few years.

I want to concur with Jake. HippoEDIT is the best and most comprehension text editor I've ever used. I've compiled several illustrated ebooks using it. Leaves the free editors behind in its dust. And the developer allows multiple uses - i.e., on different computers in the home. Plus, he answers any query very quickly.

I have too many editors. I think this maybe a contender but not even close to equal to the power of ATOM or Brackets that have many features that this editor doesn't have. I think that notepad++ is too close to this one but free and that is the bottom line. At near 50.00 for a perhaps little better replacement for notepad++ I don't see how a hierarchy and navigation bar as you stated are enough to warrant the expenditure. This is a time-limited offer and because of that I am going to pass. Not to mention that there are a plethora of free IDE's IE: Eclipse, Net Beans, Visual Studio, code ect... that just outclass any text editor period. I am going to say this that you have a good text editor and one that is a true contender but It must be competitively priced, and by that I mean it must be free.

Why don't you start a new comparison category and post some comments in the HippoEDIT support forum which they are apparently brave enough to publish?
