Hey Alex, I AM NOT HAPPY

I only had enough time to download and install the program with about half an hour to spare and I only read the top half-dozen comments.

BUT during that half-hour period I did also open the HippoEDiT HOME PAGE - and saw no mention of any special price or offer, as well as the Beta Version Test page

I only found out that You had this excellent little program, On Sale at a discounted price only AFTER I had read all of the USER COMMENTS and REPLiES! and Your reply was listed 6/sixth from the bottom of the page

There was NO MENTiON anywhere else on the webpage ABOVE THE COMMENTS SECTiON or (even in the downloads ReadMe.txt file), that the program was being offered for sale yesterday during the promotion period and I for one am UNHAPPY about that because I like what I have seen so far and I WOULD Like to buy a License.

SO I presume that you may not reply to my comment or offer me the discounted price now that the GOTD DEAL HAS EXPiRED.

QUESTiON 1 : so when do You anticipate releasing Version 2 ?

and

QUESTiON 2 : do you anticipate there will be another chance to buy the program at a discounted price before Version 2 becomes available?

Regards,

Wally

I do not use antivirus, but the downloaded file is corrupt, unpackable but can not be used.

Since we already have Sublime, Atom, and now VS Code, there doesn't seem to be much of a reason for this. What can it do that the big three can't?

It's worth today's price of free but not the usual price of 40 euros.

Add support for syntax checking for more programming languages (C#, python, etc).

Add a simple language for macros (like Notepadd++ or UltraEdit)

Does anyone know of an editor that will translate French to English by just hovering the cursor over a word?

Reply   |   Comment by dan  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

Hi dan,

you may use Google Tools plugin for that:

Alex from HippoEDIT,
Unfortunately there is no target language of English so the plugin id of no value to me.
Thanks anyhow,
Dan

Hi dan,

English is in, but it is just not visible, because of UI bug - vertical scroll bar is not shown.
Set focus on the combo and scroll up with arrow keys.
I have sent you a screenshot with a result.
I will fix the bug in next builds.

Terms of the licence state that a second portable copy may be made but software refuses to install this despite separate software download under same email name. Can the developer confirm that this offer does not include the use of a portable USB version?

Reply   |   Comment by Colin  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Hi Colin,

theoretically, there are no limits on the second installation of portable copy. It may be only problematic to select a portable installation way if you have already installed the app for the current user. Just uninstall it an reinstall as portable. Then you can install it on any amount of USB drives.
But due to a specific way of registration for GAOTD version, you need to execute the installer on each machine you plan to use HE during the promotion time. Standard version does not have such limitation.

Best regards,
Alex

Hi Colin,

probably it is a limitation of GAOTD wrapper. You may just do the first installation on a USB drive and then copy the content of installation directory on to the second drive. It shall work.

Details about locations: http://wiki.hippoedit.com/options/user_directory

Hello Sigurdur Petur Hauksson,

you do not need it - the application shall work as registered directly after installation. The installer is pre-registered for GAOTD.

Best regards,
Alex

Hmm, seems like it's not supposed to work on 64-bit systems, but it does anyway. I'll keep it for now, not expecting to use it much but never hurts to have something like this on hand and I'm just feeling too lazy to download Notepad++ or any of a dozen other free editors. Windows 10 Home Edition, 64-bit, opens fine, no complaints.

You cannot install as portable (option is disabled). So, if you want to keep the registry clean, don't install. Not that it's a bad software per se but it makes uninstallation difficult because of too many registry keys. Iobit uninstaller wants to delete 1774 keys, which is ridiculous to say the least and another proof some developers still need to learn how to install Windows software properly 22 years after the registry was first used as it is nowadays. What a pity.

No changelog between this version 1.60.50 and a previous GOTD version 1.60.31. I thought this version would be an improvement to the previous one (this product lacks some essential features). I'm not really disappointed though. Uninstalled.

Hello papin,

HippoEDIT does not store settings in the registry. The registry is only used for file registration, com object registration for scripting and etc. So, those minimal settings that require Windows to work properly with a software.
To get editor installed in portable mode, you need to uninstall a local copy of it first. Details you can find on the wiki: http://wiki.hippoedit.com/options/user_directory

If one needs to see changes between builds, it can be found on the forum: http://forum.hippoedit.com/beta-version-test/

Best regards,
Alex

What I love most of this editor is the clever way it handles dictionaries. However it is a bit expensive and seems to be abandoned. Notepad++ is a serious free competitor whose last version is 7.5.4 released just now 01 Jan 2018. Happy New Year!

Reply   |   Comment by Luis  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+18)

Hi Luis,

just to give you a more info: HippoEDIT is single text editor I know, that can handle mixed documents and check spelling for them. For most English speaking users it is not a real benefit, but for not English speaking it a really helpful feature.

And yes, the development is not abandoned. 1.6x is just a stable branch, that does not get significant updates, only bug fixes, and small features. Major changes are in 2.X branch, that can be tested by registered users.

BR,
Alex

Hasn't this been a GAOTD before, same version (1.60) but the installer size has changed a bit? Or is this in some way a new offering?

krypteller, Thanks. Looking further on the HippoEdit website/forum I found this which lists the versions/changes/improvements, some of which appear non-trivial so worth updating to the current version it seems: http://forum.hippoedit.com/beta-version-test/?PHPSESSID=kd13r4mu11mujeci9nb9021of5

TK,

A "change history" may be behind the forum pages with access reserved for registered users (link in 2nd comment):

http://forum.hippoedit.com/general-discussion/he-changelog/msg2190/

...but this page (Beta Version Test (minor)) lists some recent changes/updates for v1.61.x which suggests that product development is not "dead" as others suggested:

It's a great editor! Too bad there wasn't any development for 3 years.

TK, OK, thanks for the info. I find it suboptimal of the developers to not transport the message of program improvements via the visible version numbering.

I want to concur with Jake. HippoEDIT is the best and most comprehension text editor I've ever used. I've compiled several illustrated ebooks using it. Leaves the free editors behind in its dust. And the developer allows multiple uses - i.e., on different computers in the home. Plus, he answers any query very quickly.

I have too many editors. I think this maybe a contender but not even close to equal to the power of ATOM or Brackets that have many features that this editor doesn't have. I think that notepad++ is too close to this one but free and that is the bottom line. At near 50.00 for a perhaps little better replacement for notepad++ I don't see how a hierarchy and navigation bar as you stated are enough to warrant the expenditure. This is a time-limited offer and because of that I am going to pass. Not to mention that there are a plethora of free IDE's IE: Eclipse, Net Beans, Visual Studio, code ect... that just outclass any text editor period. I am going to say this that you have a good text editor and one that is a true contender but It must be competitively priced, and by that I mean it must be free.

Why don't you start a new comparison category and post some comments in the HippoEDIT support forum which they are apparently brave enough to publish?
