I'm so disappointed! I missed the download :( I was helping my mom last night and didn't get it downloaded in time. Will this software be coming up for free download again anytime in the future?

Christine, Judging from previously they went through a bunch of Franzis software before returning to HDR Projects, so it may be a while:
https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/category/publisher/franzis-verlag-gmbh/
However the Nik bundle is now free and includes "HDR Efex Pro 2" software:
https://www.google.com/nikcollection/
It installs as a plugin to Photoshop and similar, but can be run stand-alone by just a link on your desktop (or wherever) to:
C:\Program Files\Google\NIK Collection\HDR Efex Pro 2\HDR Efex Pro 2.exe

Installed fine on Windows 8.1. Runs well with some nice filters. Always recommend programs like this to my photography classes for those who don't want to get into doing things themselves with Photoshop or Gimp.
Registration was fine. Already had a log-in from previous Giveaway so just logged in when taken to their website and serial number was sent very quickly.
Looking at many other peoples' comments there do seem to be a lot of people who come to GOTD who have very little computer knowledge/skills and seem to struggle with anything but the simplest activation system, so other software companies need to take this into account. Anything but an idiot proof method and we get lots of stupid comments about how it doesn't work, too slow, etc.

Couple notes: "registration code" is also "activation code", so you will need that code 2 times. After registration page have been filled, it´s takes about 20 min to get verification link in E-mail (I use gmail).

Setup.exe took that long to actually install the program, I ran out of time to actually try and register.

Going back to PSP X8, at least it is already installed on my system, and fully up and running.

I have HDR Projects 3 Professional. V 3.31.02308
IS this giveaway better than that? I see its version 3.34, so not much different. May not be worthwhile downloading this, for me.

It's a good app. And even if you only have ONE image - say a single .jpg - you can still make a "synthetic" HDR from that. The program adds 2 images with different exposure values (called "Synthetic images") - and you can also add more, if you want to. You can adjust these images. Then you go to the next stage and the program shows you a LOT of variations of the final image. You choose which one you like then save it. Simple really.

Steve, no, it's the standard version, so less good. (For example you should have 81 presets, this has 68.)

Downloaded and attempted to install. First time the Setup file just kept running without flashing anything on my screen. 15 minutes went by with nothing further happening, so I had to force my machine to shut down. After starting it up again and going to the folder I have it stored in, I tried again, fully expecting the same results. It looked as though I was right to expect that, but after three minutes the Setup file ran. The hoops you must jump through were annoying as well, but I gave it a chance and followed the instructions. It took some time to complete, as Setup contacts the site to get the installer to activate through an email, then yet another email to get the user ID and the Activation code. Then I'm asked to enter the serial number and I have to try both of the numbers I was given. The Activation code is the serial number! Make a note of this is my advice to others going for this application.

I have been playing with the program, and it seems to do what it is meant to do; although I shall need to keep working with it to discover the best way to use it. Still I say this is a keeper!

This is my second message to Franzis today, my forth since last week. I don't seem to be able to get a response from Franzis other than in a public forum. My issue is simple. When I submit my email address to Franzis a box opens that tells me that I am already registered and I am asked if I have forgotten my password and I answer yes. I am told it will be sent to me shortly and it never arrives. I did receive one bit of information from Franzis and they sent me a link to their site which handles contact with the company but as I told the person in the letter I received I have already written to Franzis through their site and they have still failed to contact me.

Their must be someone smart enough at Franzia to figure this problem out. I hope there is.

Will someone at Franzis please help me.

HDR Projects 3 Std. is currently sold by Franzis for € 69, its first release dating from Sept. 2014
Download was no problem, however the requested and confirmed email with registration code took quite some time to arrive. Plugin for Photoshop CC 2014 was offered during installation process, but as I'll be finally soon getting rid off my old CC version I did not bother with the plugin.
Will the software ever grow on me? Possibly not so much, at least not with the given presets.

Tried twice on d/ls. Extracts 2 files. The main one setup.exe has a sort of ghosted icon. It finally filled in with a usual kind of icon image other than just a white blank on second d/l attempt & extract.
Well both attempts, when click setup, results in a spinning blue cursor. Killed them w/ task mgr.
Then I see the pop up box to request code before install will continue. Geez.
Guess try third time. Had tried prior version 2 from elsewhere. Most of these guys stuff does install in
the end. Oh beware of a ton of emails from them hawking many more of their photo programs. Tried to get off email list & no go using Yahoo email & their German site. Click bottom of email in Yahoo to unsubscribe and they keep coming. Spam click will just fill the spam folder at Yahoo. Just saying nuf already.

Will this be able to work with 3 hand held shots? In my mind, 3 hand held shots taken between changing exposures will be way too different to ever be able to combine into one. If these shots must be taken on a tripod it won't be practical for someone like me who doesn't carry a tripod where ever I go. Or am I not understanding the process?

Reply   |   Comment by Carl  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-6)

Carl, usually cameras have a setting for Exposure bracketing.
So before you shoot you select how many shots and the +- exposure values. Then you can easily take 3 to 5 shots manually because you just press the shutter (depending on camera once or 3 to 5 times) without taking the camera away and changing the exposure values.
So you will have small alignments to do but they are possible with this software.

Reply   |   Comment by Barcud Revnik  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Carl,

"Will this be able to work with 3 hand held shots?"

From the app's web page: "To make sure that it works, I shoot a bracketing series of at least three shots. HDR projects does the rest for me."

" If these shots must be taken on a tripod it won't be practical for someone like me who doesn't carry a tripod where ever I go. Or am I not understanding the process?"

By taking 2 or more shots, e.g. one darker & one lighter, you can get more data than with a single shot in the middle range. HDR Projects 3 combines that data for you so you get a single image. For that to work well the content of the 2 [or more] shots needs to match -- the more closely they match the better.

Now with that in mind, there are loads of variables that come into play when you take one, let alone 3 bracketed shots. Does your camera let you shoot bracketed shots automatically -- if not, you probably need some way to keep it's position fixed while you change settings & take another shot. Do conditions allow you to use a faster shutter speed -- if not, you could have blurring from camera motion with just one shot, or a bit softer image from motion compensation, & 2 or more shots would tend not to match exactly, even with the camera's position fixed if your subject is moving.

So to the question, do you need to use a tripod? Maybe. It depends on how steady you can hold the camera, if you move it pressing the shutter button, what the conditions are, what you're shooting etc. And remember, there are all sorts of alternatives to a traditional tripod to hold a camera steady.

Barcud Revnik, OMG! I had no idea that my camera could do this! OK, I've taken 3 shots but it looks like I will have to study your tutorials to figure out how to use this software. Thanks for you input.

Carl

Reply   |   Comment by Carl  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Carl,
You can also use just ONE image with this app. It will create 2 (or more - if you choose to add some) "synthetically" bracketed images. These come out okay too. So it's not absolutely necessary to have 3+ bracketed images - as long as you didn't blow out the light or dark areas too much: and have enough detail in the original...

As a digital artist I often use HDR images in my work to provide realistic environments with real world type lighting. In some (if not all) 3D applications, such as Bryce 7.1 Pro and DAZ Studio, HDRs are used in this way. If you have reflective surfaces, such as eyes that you wish to look alive, this is one way to do that, as the HDR can provide the environment that is reflected by the cornea and sclera of the eye.

All of that said, I am not sure whether this can be used to create photographic HDR images that can be used in this way, but I shall certainly download this one and give it a try.

Thanks in advance GOTD and Franzis.

Where can I find Photoshop CC plugin for HDR project 3?

* I can't just drag three images into the program? Annoying. People don't view their images in windows explorer, they view them in Adobe Lightroom, Picasa, etc. You should be able to drag and drop images from these programs into yours.
* The "Exposure Bracketing Browser" groups most photos incorrectly and is slow, so I find this useless.
* Some of the spelling is for English is incorrect (optimisation vs optimization)
* The HDR Algorithms text could be replaced with thumbnails.
* The HDR Algorithms should include more presets with more dramatic options, none of the images "pop" with processing. The HDR image just looks like the brightness and contrast was slightly adjusted rather than properly done. I would not buy this software or recommend it and I process tens of thousands of HDR images a year. If I bought this I would want my money back.
* Go play with Photomatix and you'll see a lot of good features and presets you lack.

Download link arrived almost instantly, as did the activation code. So aside from an extra hoop to jump in order to get them, downloaded and installed fine on my Win7 laptop. It appears to be a tool to adjust exposure, which is my most common problem to want to fix - but I'm not sure of any other editing features it may have. I will have to play with it more, but it seems to be a one trick pony that does its one trick very well.

Reply   |   Comment by sheamurai  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-5)

Oh, if anyone doesn't know what HDR is, it stands for "High Dynamic Range" and is usually used to combine differently exposed photographs of a scene to end up with an image capturing a greater range of brightness than the camera can. The classic example is being in a dark room looking out on a brightly lit scene. The camera can show the detail in the room, with the Window solid white, or the detail outside the window but everything in the room is black. But taking a set of (typically three) exposure-bracketed images of the scene you can then combine them in some HDR software and have room and outside both visible in the picture.

Update to my previous post:

To add raw support for more recent cameras download this:
http://transfer.franzis.de/projects/...ects_Win64.zip
and replace C:\Program Files\Franzis\HDR projects 3\FreeImage.dll with it.
If you’re on a Mac I don’t know the link I’m afraid, but I guess that (i) it uses the same library and (ii) an updated version is out there somewhere.

Reply   |   Comment by JohnL  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Sorry, should have said, if you're not running the 64-bit version, i.e. your computer doesn't have a directory "C:\Program Files (x86)" then the file you want for upgraded raw support is: http://transfer.franzis.de/projects/RawImageDll_projects_Win32.zip

Plus of course you extract the dll from the zip file, you don't use the zip as it is.

For the 64-bit version you want:

The 32-bit link above is correct. I checked the original I cut and pasted from and that's correct, so no idea how that happened.

Am i right in thinking, this is only for raw images, and not photos taken with a cheap camera or mobile phone camera in jpeg format etc ? thx

Reply   |   Comment by Chris  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Chris, You can use it for raw images, but you could also use it for cellphone cameras. What it really wants is a set of bracketed images, i.e. shot at different brightness (strictly exposure) levels. If you hold a cell-phone steady on a wall (or something) and take three images, the first with the brightness (for the photograph, that is) set really low, the second with it at a normal level and the third one with it set really high then you could work with those images. You can do in-camera HDR on many phones, if that has an option to store the original images it shot then you'd be good-to-go.

Chris,

"Am i right in thinking, this is only for raw images"

IMHO HDR may be more necessary when the image isn't captured RAW. When you take a picture the data from the camera's sensor can be saved, more or less as-is, which would be RAW, or it can be processed into an image, losing some of the original data. So with a RAW image the data you want/need may be there in a single shot, but be missing from the image once turned into say a jpg.

Thank you so much for giving away another Franzis tool, they are probably my favourites from the give-aways. Also after you gave away Silver Projects I purchased BW Projects from them, so they are hopefully working for Franzis too.

The Projects software is a set of (basically) stand-alone photographic processing tools, they do install as Photoshop plugins, but under File->Export, not as Filters, which IMHO doesn’t really count.

With the HDR software in today's give-away you have an additional step beyond just opening a photograph, you have to select the images to combine and choose some options. I was very pleased to see it has support for Raw file import, although as a 2015 program I don't know how it will do with the very latest cameras.

Once you’ve imported the images (i.e. clicked on post-processing) it works in basically the same way as the other Franzis Projects software. Here’s what I wrote as a quick-start guide before and it’s generally applicable to the HDR software (which I’ve only just started playing with).

The thing to get your brain around with the Projects software is they are a huge pile of image processing tools, which are gathered together into presets in the left pane. All those options do is select a bunch of processing tools and choose options for them, so they are infinitely tweakable.

After you've loaded the image(s) you want to work with you can then play with the canned effects on the left side, play with assorted things on the right side panel (which should start on the “Finalise” tab). Changing to "Expert" in the right panel you can add filters from the list at the top, select them in the middle of the panel and tweak their effects at the bottom (may need scrolling down). The boxes at the top of the left panel filter the effects that are listed in the panel, so ignore them initially. On a faster computer you can use the Eye icon on the toolbar to disable the preview mode and show the final image in the main window, which IMHO is worth doing.

When saving the final image note that the first dialog, where it asks for the title, is going to write that over the image, it isn't the file name. The main disadvantage is the lack of Undo operations.

JohnL,

definitely nice efforts on your part to provide a helpfile on this Franzis software.

The German fotocommunity.de also has a very industrious sales engineer/photographic adviser who is overflowing with HDR delight (mentioned in the credits).

Anyhow, YT has a real bunch of Franzis tutorials, also in English

Peter C1, The best price I see currently is 64% off here:
https://www.projects-software.com/hdr-projects-4-special-offer
Although is was 80% off about a week ago.
Both of those are for the standard version, I haven't seen a good deal on the Professional one.

I have version 2 of this software and have been impressed with the results. It does a lot of the work for you by offering many presets to choose from, as well as more granular settings for fine tuning. If you want your photos to pop and stand out from "ordinary" photos this software is recommended!
