Hard Disk Sentinel is 32 bit. I put the pro version on 2 of my computers. It was always disappearing from the tray. I have 64 bit Windows 10 PCs. Not sure if there's a problem because of that. I just switched today to (Free)CrystalDiskInfo 8.4.2 (disk health monitoring). Portable also available. It support 32 and 64 bit. It's a real light weight program. Sits in the tray like it should and keeps me informed on hard drive Temp and other issues. Hard Disk Sentinel is worth a try. Has a lot of bells and whistles.

I have ver 5.5 installed and tried to install today's GOTD ver 5.61 three times. Each time I disabled my AVAST antivirus. I looked at the ver in the help tab and saw that I still have ver 5.5. The last time I used the task manager to stop the old ver from running and still had the problem.

Not sure how to proceed. Not willing to delete the old version before installation because I don't trust that the new ver will install.

I have the pro version of this software and have been using this for over a decade. Its GUI is nicely laid out nicely and generously intuitive. You have a left side panel that lists your hard drives at the top along with the size, health & temperature of a particular drive. Below that left column shows all drives listed and their respective drive letters, used and free space, plus any multiple partitions you may have on any particular drive. The main window consists of seven tabs (Overview, Temperature, SMART, Information, Log, Disk Performance and Alerts) Clicking on one of these tabs reveals well detailed info in the main window of the program just below the tab(s)

At the top of the program you have your toolbar and below that an icon toolbar that when you do a mouseover, a description of a particular icon shows you what it's for. Hard drive sentinel is, IMO, a cadillac piece of software for SMART info for your hard and or ssd's. This is GOTD's third lifetime giveaway for Hard Drive Sentinel. You should really try this piece of software. It's a must have for knowing the health of your computers hard drive(s). The other nice thing is it supports OS's from Windows 95 to Windows 10. I think that says a lot that they do that while most other softwares stop supporting older outdated operating systems.

Had an older previous version and loved it so I upgraded. Norton would not let me install it and had to turn off the Data Protector to install it.

Very helpful storage device monitoring program, as it made me discover my common drive usage; like number of unsafe shutdowns, the amount of read-writes (especially useful for SSDs), etc.

If you're worried of being unable to install your registrered copy at a later date due to how the provided installer works, please have this installed at least once today, then backup the "HDSentinel.key" file in its installation folder. Beyond today, you can use this key with the normal HDSentinel 5.61 installer.

Further, I decided to proceed with activation. I was taken to a window from where I clicked on the Load Activated Key File. From the HardDisk Sentinel Directory, I selected the file, HD Sentinel.key. It says please contact the developer about your license. What shall I do? Where am I going wrong? Thanks in advance.

Dattatraya Vaidya, you may have installed the latest version, 5.70. This license is valid only for 5.61.

You can just reinstall the program using the installer provided by GotD to fix your issue.

I have downloaded and installed it. It says it is a trial version for 30 days. But GOTD details say it a lifetime license with no upgrades and that it is preactivated. Any advice on the matter. Thanks in advance.

No real need for this kind of tools. Some of them can even be detrimental to your drive as they are constantly testing it and pushing it to its limits. In Windows 10 there are already several built-in tools which generate the hard disk status as well as health.
And Win10 has a specific tool to check the hard drive or SSD drive's health : SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology)

Reply   |   Comment by FrankY  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-18)

FrankY, I don't think it's useless, it notified me of a failing drive once, so I could still save most of my stuff.

Reply   |   Comment by het  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

FrankY, not a need, though definitely provides information of your drive usage since the day the software is installed; something Win10 cannot provide atm as it's only a "current state" check.

The SMART checks would be detrimental only if it involves having to wake up the disk before a check (please increase its "Detection frequency"). For HDSentinel's case, it does not "constantly test and push it to its limits" as it's mostly used for its monitoring anyway. The tests can only be issued manually.

FrankY, That's just nonsense. I've owned the 'family five pack' of this utility since discovering its usefulness from a giveaway several years ago. I run it on every machine I own, desktop and laptop.

This does not do ANYTHING in the background except monitor all your drives' SMART settings. It is not 'constantly testing' or doing anything except what you tell it to do.

It seems like you have never used it.

You can set alerts and alarms for drive degradation, high temperatures, and other parameters. It has both non-destructive and destructive drive test. It can low level format a drive to 'refresh' it, or pull off a sector of data, refresh that sector, then put the data back for a non-destructive 'refresh'. It will guesstimate remaining drive life, show drive hours, and even number of start/stop cycles on spinning drives.

It's an all around very good tool with a very low impact on system and memory that keeps an eye on all your drives.

There is nothing in Windows 10 that even comes close to the abilities of this software with all its various tools in one place that load at startup and then disappear into the background, leaving (if you wish) a readout on the taskbar of various optional parameters like drive temperature.

I recommend it highly, especially as it's free to try forever.

FrankY, you obviously have not tested this program and seem to think you know more than you apparently do. For starters SMART is not a Win10 tool, it is built in to your hard drives and can be monitored in any OS by any software designed to do so, which this program does and so much more without "testing it and pushing it to its limits" (although it will also do that if you want). It also monitors HD temperatures, and rather than being designed to break your hard drive it warns you of impending doom so you may be able to avoid a disaster.

Like some others, I was so impressed that a few years ago I purchased the Pro version for all our home desktops and laptops, and highly recommend it!

I downloaded, with some interest and before that finished a message about an update came up. I naturally went for that before reading that today's giveaway would not have any updates.
So now I am unable to Register.

JOHN RICHARDS, Just reinstall the installer you used, and it will be registered again. Remember to disable updates, since updating the version would invalidate the license.

Reply   |   Comment by Lloyd Dunamis  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

JOHN RICHARDS, try deleting this program then download again . Right click on setup and choose run under Administrator. Don't read or do anything about the update, If that doesn't work try going their web sight and see if you can download from there and repeat using Administrator. Sometimes you get lucky because often the web site download is same program but using a different method.Do not click update if it shows up there as well.Hope this works for you, I got this last time it was offered, it let me save my stuff on an external drive that showed it as Critical, all other drives were perfect and still are.

Decent program. Took snapshot of previous GOTD version (5.50) GUI home-screen and found no difference. Sometimes, these updated versions include advertising but not this one. Still can't detail USB drive specs.

Worth installing while free. Very low impact, yet with comprehensive status reporting.

I used free versions of this Hungarian software for many years on older PCs (since 2005). Then quite a while back an earlier free GOTD offer for Hard Disk Sentinel Standard helped identify a drive-frying combination of events on my current PC, making it well worth buying the Pro edition license for my future ongoing protection.

One of the very few third party daily-startup background utilities I consider worth installing -- recommended.

Except that if you do load it at startup, it allows you to monitor things like drive temperatures in real time on the taskbar, and allows you to set thresholds on monitored parameters for alarms.

I just installed the program. However, when I open the interface I am unable to run any of the tests. I saw the message about the .gcd file being necessary for installation and I assume it was installed in the initial set-up. The .gcd file itself cannot be opened/installed. Any ideas?

Reply   |   Comment by Andre Rodrigs  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-4)

Andre Rodrigs, try reinstalling the program (make sure antivirus is disabled), the gcd file just checks to see if the 24 hours hasn't passed yet and allows installation after that no files from it are necessary. kind if slow on the install but it worked for me.
