@25 Copying a disk or partition with this software is "cloning" the only difference is the name.

Sorry try again nub.

When running setup file, it checks with GAOTD site using software informer and then unzips .msi file to default folder on the system. You can change that default folder. First locate that .msi file in your system or get it again by running setup in time and then run it by double clicking and you will get installation screen on which you will find get free serial button by clicking which you get registration link.

Installation folder for program can be changed as you like after you enter Product key and Serial No. Get the .msi file before giveaway period is over as afterward you can not get it and then install it. Some times you be able to register later also if you have .msi file.
Some email providers spam filter consider the mail from Paragon as spam and hence check with spam mail folder of your email.
Recovery CD ISO is self contained in softwareas full version and hence hence the installation file is huge else the software will be smaller by about 40 MB.
Very good for Windows XP versions and some of Vista versions. Has some trouble with Windows 7 because of its Partition andM boot sector And Master Boot Sector structure and when your system becomes unbootable due to old program files, use partition wizard boot CD from www.partitionwizard.com (always keep it handy for emergency as it has easy interface and simple options)to boot your system and recover lost or missing partitions which I had frequently done on Windows 7 as these old paragon tools are a pain to use on latest Windows OSes until they get newer Versions.
Always use some good download managers like Flashget or stardownloaderfree for downloading these kind of huge files like Paragon tools.

The one thing I really HATE about Paragon is their requiring you to give out your email address so you're subjected to even more advertising & junk in email. I almost never check my email except when forced to, precisely because I hate hate hate having to wade through all the advertising stuff that comes because of having to give my email addy.

Why can't they just provide the reg key in the readme without having to have my email address?

If signing up for the free serial codes needed to complete installation DO NOT use a Yahoo mail addy. I waited 45 minutes there, then 45 seconds when I went back and used a gmail addy!

p.s. during the set up process, the GAOTD "What Next" page loaded in my Firefox browser, but I did not see a "Activation Successful" notice. I might have missed it, though.....

Also, I have admin rights . . .

Thanks to both GAOTD and Paragon, even though I cannot get the program to install (and I always read the readme file and follow the instructions).

It took about about 10 minutes to download with my cable connection, which is not a problem.

I unzipped the download, read the "readme", clicked on "Setup", and found the 'msi' file. After activating it, I progressed to the registration screen and clicked on "Get free serial".

It took over 30 minutes to get my email with the product key and serial number. Again, not a problem.

Now for the problem: I followed the instructions in the email and used ctrl-c and ctrl-v to copy and paste the product key and serial number, taking care to make certain that there were no leading or following spaces.

Now for the problem: A message popped up stating that the serial number was invalid.

I tried copying and pasting again, no change; unzipping the download again and starting over; no change, and finally starting all over with a new download. Midnight was approaching, and I could not get it to download again. :>((

Recognizing that Murphy's law can never be invalidated, I'm still a tad frustrated. I would really like to have this in my computer.
Oh, well....

Incidentally, "tad" is scientific notation for "pretty much". :>)

Followup to previous report... I tried to start defrag on the x64 Vista installation and apparently Paragon will not just ignore open files -- it requires a reboot so it can defrag those files before loading the OS... HOWEVER, it has the reboot messed up and again tries to load from a floppy in A: until a power restart and the little DOS-text menu to select either A: or the hard drive -- select the HD and the boot continues without any defrag action. maybe the other features in the Suite will work better.

Installed x64 version on HP Pavillion, AMD Phenom x4, Vista with no problem.

However, to test I selected "analyze" and was warned that would require a reboot; though I didn't like the idea of having to reboot just to analyze the fragmentation of the hard drive, I agreed;
reboot started with the black DOS screen and simple text, a bunch of hex dumps, and a message that it was booting -- after about 10 minutes of nothing happening, I powered down and back up.... the boot config had been changed to boot from the A: floppy drive!! (this PC doesnt even have a floppy drive). Manual selection
of the primary drive resulted in a normal bootup... whew!!!

x32 version installed on Gateway WinXP ok. I selected to run file verification and of course got the message that a reboot was required (this I understand, because verifiying the files means no programs can be open). The checking and verifying screen opened properly and seems to be proceeding correctly -- except that the estimation of "Time to finish" was waaaaay off! and keeps increasing as time elapses. Sure hope we don't get a power glitch in the next hour or so...

Debating whether I should install on the Dell Win2Kpro system!

All in all, this seems to be not only a nice utility to have but even the retail price of $39.95 seems reasonable for what it contains...

I installed Paragon Hard Disk Manager Special Edition 2009 about 10 times on my computer. However, the program does not appear anywhere. I got a message from Giveawayoftheday that the program was successfully activated, and I registered in on your website. However, there is no icon or link to the actual program that I can use to open it. It does not appear on my hard disk when I search for it. It is not in start/programs. It is not in the C:\ or C:\Program Files folder or in the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. I tried using an uninstall program that finds every software program on the computer and it did not appear. I tried to install it with all of my programs unloaded, and I tried to install it in safe mode. I tried to install it using the mirror link. Every time I tried to reinstall it, I got a window that said the files exist on my computer, do you want to overwrite it? I did overwrite it every time. Why can I not locate the program on my hard drive?

Download very fast. Problem with install at "get Serial" button but solved above with direct link.

However, why does my 64 bit version install in Program Files (x86) as opposed to Program Files in Win 7?

I appreciate full Win 7 is not supported but it is only Vista in disguise.

Anyone getting the following error when trying to launch the advanced partitioning tools? (HDM 2009 Special Edition -> Advanced Partitioning and Hard Disk Management)

Operation Failed; Bad Parameter or Function
under 'more options'
Error source: Hard Disk Manager
Error code: 0x1100a

What is strange is Partition Manager 10.0 Personal (GOTD a week or two ago) works fine, and it looks like this is actually version 9-- is the old GOTD a better partition manager?

This program does work very well with 7 x64.

The backup engine and partitioning functions themselves work extremely well - Windows 7 partitioning rules are the same as those for Vista.

You may find the bcd corrector on the boot disc will correct Vista bcd entries - but not Win 7 entries. You are not likely to use that feature and it won't do any harm - it just hasn't been updated to recognize 7.

As with all programs that offer to go into boot time mode when a restart is required - it is better to close the program , and use the boot disc to perform the operation.

I installed this the last time they had this on gotd.

No, you didn't. It is the first time Paragon are giving away their complete hard disk SUITE. What was given away at previous times are single editions like Drive Backup, Drive Copy and Partition Manager but never the suite!

N.B. (FWIW): Hard Disk Manager (Suite) = Partition Manager + Drive Backup

Not sure what this "free Serial link" is all about, as I never saw one and the program seems to have installed just fine.

Running Vista64.

I accidentally clicked the non 64 install and got "does not support this OS" error. exited that.

Started the correct 64 install and was given the Modify, repair or remove options. Clicked "repair" and the program installed successfully.

Did I just accidentally hack the registration process?!

LOL!

My Cat says LOL!

#66 (mat312): You are describing a different operation from #48 (ws). The fundamental difference is that your scenario has all harddrives staying in place after "copying". #48's scenario has a harddrive "cloned" to be SWAPPED with the original. In #48's case, you run into issues due to windows remembering which drive had been connected to this computer. e.g. drive D is a clone of drive C. When drive C is taken out and drive D is operating alone, windows will remember and assign drive letter D to this drive, causing all C:\ files to be missing. It doesn't matter what is set in BIOS or in boot.ini, windows will change it (that's how it still does half the startup).

There is a simple registry edit to fix this issue before taking out the original drive C. Best practice is to have both drives in place, boot into drive D, then swap the drive designations in registry. Then drive C can be safely taken out.

Installed fine. Ran the defrag operation as a test. It reboots to control the C drive while defragging. Was running fine then it froze my system!! Rebooting forced Vista's start up repair, which said it couldn't repair the startup. Luckily, just pushing F8 got me back into windows.

So, I uninstalled Paragon HD Manager. Had to manually delete its directory. Then I rebooted and used Glary Utilities (free) to clean and optimize the registry.

Four hours of new experience... I think this one is only for super power users!

@48 Sorry, but your wrong. Windows always sees its own partition as "C:\" copying an OS partition to another will not require any tweaks in the copied OS, the only thing you need to do is add the copy to the boot.ini (BCD for Vista and 7) in the original OS (that the MBR is pointed to) so that you have the boot option.

@25 You can use this software to copy an OS partition or entire disk to a new one and boot off it without issues, if you copy the entire disk the only thing you need to do to boot to it is select it from your BIOS boot menu, since the MBR and boot records would be intact.

RE: Win&: Anyone who bought HDMS December or later (i.e. now) will get a free upgrade to the Win7-compatible HDMS 2010, which is due out THIS MONTH (at least that's the date they gave in December).

WinPE is a near-full Windows Vista boot CD environment that allows you to do recovery, partition, and other work in a Windows environment. So you can use your regular Windows drivers. The full HDM Suite also gives you their Adaptive Restore, which allows you to inject / substitute new drivers for new hardware during a restore. IOW, you make a backup image, then move it to a new HD / MB / system, whatever - just provide the new drivers. This is not true of most other restore systems.

The backup is very adaptable, too - start with a full drive image, then do incremental backups, and you can combine the two, and even exclude things from the restore if you need to put things in different places on the new disk.

The WinPE Rescue CD that is not included is based on the Windows OS.

The recovery CD that is included is based on a Linux OS.
