To Mirolit:

Thank you for the explanation and addressing the issue which had been raised by me and other poster after we had been alerted by our antivirus software about this specific matter.
Your kindness is much appreciated.

@118
"It didn’t show up on my list of open programs, I couldn’t find a way to maximize it by right clicking on the icon (tried desktop and taskbar icons) It was exactly as if it was closed, instead of minimized, except that I couldn’t get it to open, either by doubleclicking the desktop icon or by using an open command."

An icon for it 'should' appear in the notification area (system tray) while it's running (near the clock). It might be hidden by default in windows 7, in which case you can click the little arrow in the tray to show the icon, and optionally drag it to the tray to keep it visible. The icon you're looking for appears as a light green leaf shape. Left-clicking it should restore the program.

They don't give it a normal taskbar button, probably because they figure you're likely to leave it running for hours in the background, and don't need it getting in the way. It might be better for them to show the taskbar button by default though, and provide the option to only show the tray icon in the settings.

@116
"This software makes itself the default WAV player. It does so without asking permission. That’s a pain. Why won’t the moderator allow this complaint to be voiced?"

There actually is an option when you install for whether or not to associate it with various file types. They're checked by default, but you can uncheck them with a single click during the install process. If you want to change them later, the program's options panel has a 'file types' tab that lets you remove the associations.

Halotea is a terrific program. It's fun and useful, and I've really been enjoying it. It compares very favourably with the earlier giveaway Atmosphere Lite Plus, which although being a nice piece of software, has nothing to compete with Halotea's functonality, flexibility and large range of environmental sounds.

Installation into a non-standard folder on Windows XP SP3 was a breeze. The only thing users really have to look out for is the default grab of file associations. That's a bit naughty actually.

Many thanks to Mirolit and GOTD for this great giveaway.

PS Mirolit, there's a couple of errors on the themes menu. It should be "Brain refresh" not "refreash". Also, "Brains wake up" doesn't make sense.

How can I re-download this file, with the installation file? I only see the "trial" download now, but I want the actual working version of the program, which didn't work yesterday. Please advise. Thanks!

I downloaded this and loved it. I had only one problem with it. I opened it, started one of the themes playing, and then minimized it. When I went to close it, however, I couldn't get it maximized again. It didn't show up on my list of open programs, I couldn't find a way to maximize it by right clicking on the icon (tried desktop and taskbar icons) It was exactly as if it was closed, instead of minimized, except that I couldn't get it to open, either by doubleclicking the desktop icon or by using an open command. I had to go into Task Manager and forcibly shut it down, after which it opened up just fine. This was on Windows 7, which we haven't had for long, so maybe this is all my mistake. I'll be playing around with it to see if there was something I missed. As it stands right now, however, that does seem to be a bug.

Other than that, I love it. I'll be using this a lot, I think.

I like the program, but it hijacked my system registry and now every time I restart my computer it associates my media files with it's self. I go into the options screen and uncheck all associations, restart my machine, but then it again automatically associates all my audio file types with it's self. I do not remember begin given this option to choose or reject when installing the program and for this reason I cannot cast a vote in favor of it. Perhaps I am missing something very easily reversed, but for now I will be uninstalling and doing a complete registry sweep to remove all left over traces.

Apologies I forgot a very important part of my procedure.
I turned off my behavior monitor, because it seemed to be part of the install problem. In my case it was Mamutu.

To 2consuella,
I don't know anything about sysact.dll, but when I was cleaning Halotea out of my registry I did notice that the install had made file associations with 4 or 5 different audio file types in the HKCU section, 2 of which you mentioned. I don't know if that will adversely affect any of my other sound apps?

To anyone still haveing activation probs,
Here is a paste of what I put on the 'How to activate Halotea' blog page, I hope it helps.

" I had the same problem on my XP Pro SP3. The way I resolved it was;
Run the uninstall from the Halotea menu. Then delete any trace of it on the hard drive. And finally delete any trace of it from The HKCU & HKLM sections of the registry, except those that belong to other progs. ie Intellipoint, Mamutu, search assistant and MUIcache.
Then run the new download 'Halotea_new.zip'. This did the trick.
Pic-Z "

P.S. Sorry I don't know anything about 7 or Vista, maybe someone familiar with them can use this to resolve the prob on them for you. se

Today’s giveaway is a KEEPER for me despite having a very low (and as usual false and misleading) GAOTD USER RATING at the moment.

Best feature of this nice software, along with the few resources it requires, is the capability given to its users to listen their favourite music, recorded on a CD, with the sound of nature, thanks to its lovely built-in audio player.

But there is also a built-in RECORDER that allows you to record sounds in the OGG format to play back by modern portble players afterwards.

So 2 huge THUMBS UP from me and NO FREEWARE alternatives todays because I don’t know any as good as this one.

Cheers

I AM having problems. Thank you for extending the giveaway, but it has done me no good. The file (no alternate, only one) downloads OK and unzips OK and the install starts OK. Dialog box says it activates, but three downloads and re-trys now and I get this message every time: "NSIS Error. Error launching installer".
I am on a PC laptop running Vista as Administrator. Nothing I have tried will make this work.

I finally got around to installing this at the last minute and had no problems on Win7Home/64. I suffer from tinnitus and have the Atmosphere software on another computer, so this one is a nice addition to this laptop. I have also been looking for a simple way to create a playlist of my podcast files and play them without having to launch WMP or iTunes, and this also meets that need. I really like the interface and am currently listening to my podcasts with a background theme I easily customized for myself.

Thank you GOTD and Mirolit!

Perhaps I'm missing something, but how is this interface intuitive? I've been trying to make some sort of sound come from it for the last 15 minutes to no avail. The help documentation is not much better off. I'll keep it in case someone can explain what I'm doing wrong, but if not, I'm uninstalling it.

It looks like an interesting concept and may very well be what I could use, but if it doesn't work it's of no use to me.

I followed the instructions for installation & activation. The latter was acknowledged with no problem. However, while installing it, it said that this was a trial version good for 14 days. Upon completion of installation, I opted to run it. It started fine, but there was nothing presented to me, or that I could find anywhere, on registering the product. Usually, there is someplace to click in the options/preferences/about menu items that allow for this, or say what the status of registration is, but not in this application.
I can only assume that, since I followed the instructions, this is a full version & not a trial version. But I cannot stay up & wait for a reply as it is way past my bedtime now.

ideas:
- dotnet4 is too much: how about with dotnet2? (for running on retired pc, like with Win98)
- some loops like water day serf have unwanted blank : trim needed?
- for music player, loop-begin and loop-end tag is welcome. (for example, on reach 12000th sample, go back to 3000th sample and loop.)
- or, crossfade loop implementation

No probs with activation at this stage. I think the program works great. Love the ability to import mp3s and great your own playlist. I also love the environmental sounds the Developer has created for the program. It is very relaxing listening to these ambient sounds in the background. I think the program also provides a wake-up/sceduler option which is nice. It also has an option to record the ambient sounds and themes provided. There are plenty more options, but I haven't had the chance to investigate them just yet.

Well done, Developer and GAOTD. :)

"Why is it that your software tries to load sysact.dll and attempts to make changes to the protected registry files when I am trying to install your application?"

sysact.dll is halotea library to perform system actions like power-off PC (on scheduler), set file associations (.mp3, ogg) and so on... It's normal practice to put system functions in separated library. Halotea has no any malicious code, so never mind! )

Could anyone please, please tell me how I can bring up that "Playlist" window again??

Took a long time to download - 25 mins and some seconds!! On my Vista Home Premium, it created an install folder under 'Program Files', where it has the dll, exe, and help files, whilst under 'Program Data' it created another folder containing the presets, skins, themes and config files. On my XP Home, it also installed itself under 'Program Files', whilst its data files are located in the application data folder under 'Documents and Settings'.

It runs smoothly and has a very easy to understand interface - though having said that, it will take time, patience and practice to become fully proficient with this little gem. You can mix it and fix it to just how you like it - it's totally personalizable.

I think it's unfortunate that the majority of today's voters seem to not fully appreciate exactly what they're getting the opportunity to try today.

Binaural beats have the capability of inducing or enhancing moods without the harmful effects of other dubious (and more than likely illegal) methods. As with any other 'mind-altering substance', the cumulative effect on the individual varies, as we all have different tolerance levels - but it really is worth persevering.

This program has very good potential - though it would be a wise investment for the developers to employ someone with more advanced english literary skills, as the poor english grammar in the help files, and the spelling mistakes throughout, do not present well to an english-speaking market.

Thumbs up from here though.

I like this -

Nice GUI, lots of choices,

(I think even more than atmosphere lite? thanks #44 & #62, good to have as well, I like how the skin & image change with each "scenario")

like this as audio player too...

just as well because will need to relax after the stress of paying $39.96! perhaps slightly over priced?

(thanks #18 for recommending the "drum sleep aid/relaxation tool" at www.soundsleeping.com, pretty basic but useful enough I guess...

LOL at the www.soundsleeping.com website - apparently "an atmosphere of rain and thunder may be especially relaxing, because one feels they cannot go out to work" ???!!!

...will have to try that one on my boss.)

I tried another similar application (can't even remember the name) before and this is by far superior.

I like that it can function as a straight audio player.... double duty is always good. Format support is quite good and the possibilities here are endless. It is simply up to the developer to take it in whatever direction they feel fulfills their goal, but the sky's the limit. A definite keeper for me!

Installation was done on a WIN7 Home Premium 64-bit OS, 6 GB RAM, and simple built-in sound card. Installation and activation was a snap. One of the best offerings seen here in quite some time.

Thank you Mirolit and GAOTD....

@Papin #19: Agreed, this one is a keeper. Installed with no issues on Windows Vista Home Premium, works "right out of the box" and has no learning curve - didn't even have to read anything to get it to go. This program looks like fun. :) I'm going to try doing some mixes for late-evening when I'm trying to sleep and see if it helps.

I like brain-wave programs

And this one is really simple to use

Pro: Interface is clean, compared to other programs like

Cons: Lack of more presets (bwgen, is no longer uptdate, but has a lot of user made stuff)

ps: beware of one thing: people with brain damage and or mental issues (like schizophrenia, epilepsy, down syndrome...) should not use any kind of programs, videos, cds, tapes relate to brainwave stimulation (audio and or visual), because it can cause serious issues, like fading, having epileptic attacks, mental blackouts...

Suggestion to Developers

What I really want to see in a relaxation sound technology is the incorporation of inaudible brain wave synchronization that promotes Alpha, Beta, Theta and Delta brainwave states. Products which help synchronize your brainwaves I have found give me the most incredibly relaxed states, also interesting states of awareness which function well when working or when creativity is called for.

GAOTD offered a player with mix and match environmental/nature sounds that incorporated this silent brain wave technology a couple of years ago and I LOVED it. Alas, it was on a computer that died, and I don't know what the company was and I haven't seen it here again.

Incorporating this as a feature in your next generation player will certainly create added value to your product and find you new users and sales.

I am actually quite impressed with this piece of software. I realize if you were not able to get it to work, it likely seems to be another flop; however, it's worked perfectly for me. It is actually a surprisingly flexible audio player even. Then you can play any "environment" audio with any music you want, side by side. The volume of every theme's "samples" can be adjusted independently, and you can make your own themes. Not only does it come with a nice stash of sounds by default, it looks like you can add your own. The playlist part can be closed independently, and "snaps" against the "main" window of the program. The whole program window will "snap" to the the edges of the screen that it's brought close to. Overall, a definite keeper, and I'm very glad I gave it a try! 15 out of 10

The new installer works fine after last night's difficulties. I played with the program a little and like what I see. I like that I can play around with the intensities and saturations of the sounds or just use the presets. I also like that it uses binaurals in addition to music and nature sounds. Plus it works as a regular media player. All in all, a nice little program.
