Control your computer with hand movements in front of your webcam. You can simulate mouse movements, mouse clicks, the keyboard cursor keys, or control the GiMeSpace virtual desktop managers. There are 5 gestures:

  • move in the horizontal direction while your hand is vertical.
  • move in the vertical direction while your hand is horizontal.
  • move in the horizontal direction with 2 hands making a 'zooming' gesture.
  • left mouse click by moving your left hand in the left upper corner.
  • right mouse click by doing the left click plus moving the right hand in the right upper corner.

While developing this program the most effort was made to minimize the load on your CPU so that it can even run on low powered netbooks and does not affect other programs that much.

I will not use it for work (I am disabled but I use Dragon naturally speaking, instead of typing), but I do a lot of fractals and I think it would be fun to move them with hand gestures. I will give it a try. It would be cool if we could rotate them too!

Interesting idea from a different perspective. This seems to me not so far away from having a computer-resident motion detection software associated with multiple security cameras.

Motion detection in security cameras is generally quite pricey. It is also pretty valuable in that you don't need to record every second from cameras to get the information you seek - It's also unpleasant to sort through the excess 'footage' that you collect without motion detection.

There is a market for this idea with a bit more development.

Thanks for offering this. It gives me something to think about.

Was reading the comments that have been posted here, and got a few laughs; so at least this one is worth that much. Still, I only see this being useful to a select few; of which I am not one. With the work I do on my PC, this would be of little if any use.

It is disappointing that many commenters here did not understand the intended use for this software, even when explained by the developer in response to these comments. While the developer probably should have explained the intended use in the initial description of the software, the snarky and mocking comments here do not reflect well upon either the intelligence or the wit of the commenters.

With some more development I could see this working like a Wi or XBox camera for games. I would also be interested in using it as a MIDI controller to control music, say to control pitch or volume or a filter (like a Theramin) while playing a synthesier or to start/stop recording/looping (transport control). Might be easier than reaching for a mouse or space bar if I'm recording guitar or (music) keyboard. Would need a way to map to MIDI signals, and a way to adjust the field of view in case I'm 10 feet from the camera or 3.

Mr.Dave, That is a very interesting suggestion, I might try this in the future.

Ignacio, thanks! I'm off now to learn more about Leap Motion. I'm always looking for easier ways to control my music software while I'm tracking a part.

I personally, don't have a need for this, but I can see that it might be very helpful for someone with an amputated hand, severe arthritis, or some kind of finger paralysis. I applaud the makers for thinking of this app. However, this might not be the best forum for having people try it out.

Any app or software program that requires the use of your Webcam to work is dangerous and a security risk! Without a doubt the developers have access to your Webcam because you give them permission, but you don't know who else can access your Webcam stream. There is a reason that IT Techs and Computer Security experts ALWAYS cover their Webcam unless they are actually using it.
Secondly, how is this more efficient than using a mouse or a track pad? If you have the strength and dexterity to suspend your hand in space and make rotational gestures, then you can certainly manipulate a regular pointing device with a lot less effort.

Where does my cat fit into the equation? (Cat jumps on desk to get onto lap, tail - if not entire cat - will pass in front of the camera.)

emaureen, If you are willing to pay for a custom made version maybe I will succeed to implement a cat filter :-)

Motion sensors are now very effective at discerning pet movements from human (intruder) movements. It would be relatively easy for the developer to take account of differences between cat/dog movements and human limb movements.

emaureen, cats can't go anywhere humans don't allow them. Where does personal responsibility fit into the equation?

Does this depend on having a certain type of cam the way Windows Hello does?
