I can't fully install because it does not detect ANY drives.
I can't set up the program.
There is no support for this question on the site and this install specifically indicates that no support is provided.

All this trouble to install an app to backup local hard drives? People, I have used "Drive Snapshot" for many years, only about 500 KB, is portable or can install, full or differential backup, verifies backup, based in Germany, in over a decade of backup and restore tests, never ever had one single problem. Have tried many of these backup apps with claim to fame and Drive Snapshot beats them all in reliability, size, simplicity, features and functionality. Good luck.

Customizable and easy to use when you figure out the registration. I set up a set of folders to backup to see how well it did. 4Gb of pics, 11.32Gb video files, and 100 text documents. Seems fairly simple and straight forward. 8 hours to back up! For those 3 folders. Loaded up Ashampoo backup that was given away on here, and that came out to a whopping 1 hour, 13 minutes. Same folders. Same settings. Will admit that this one looks a lot nicer and easier, but gonna have to pass on this.

For those wondering how to register thew program:

Click "Click here to start" at the bottom right, select a backup drive, select what you want to backup (i used only Bookmarks, since it's fast), click the arrow pointing to the right at the bottom, continue with or without compression, click the arrow pointing to the right again, then wait for the backup to complete.

Now you should see on the right hand side a red box, where you can enter your license key and register the program.

senzai6293, oh, i almost forgot, if that red box isn't there for you, then it means, that the program is already registered. No need to register again.

senzai6293, That is great, IF you can get the key!

Cannot run, encountered errors on install and on first run:

The code execution cannot proceed because MSVCP100.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.

Also missing MSVCR100.dll and mfc100u.dll.

Windows 10 Home, 2004, Build 19041.1052

May need to manually download the Visual C++ redistributables from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784, but this should be handled automatically by the installer.

Reply   |   Comment by Daniel Bragg  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+13)

No, even uninstalling and reinstalling the Visual C++ redistributables hasn't made any difference, installation is still broken, help would be appreciated.

Reply   |   Comment by Daniel Bragg  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+9)

If you encounter this, then
1) Uninstall the application entirely (you can leave settings in place),
2) use the download above to Uninstall the redistributables,
3) re-run the download above to reinstall the redistributables, and finally
4) install the application.

Once the application runs, the License Key is entered by clicking on the bottom right corner of the application window.

You have to go through the setup all the way before reaching the registration process frrom the start option on the opening page. Should have put the registration option on the opening page and NOT at the end of setup. Just a suggestion. Seems everyone is as bewildered as I was?

An interesting local-backup product (this Genie9 series, vs their cloud-based traditional & BigMind A.I. products) -- check out the previous times it was offered here:

https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/category/publisher/zoolz/
https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/category/publisher/genie-soft-corporation/

However, when offered last year (June 16, 2020) I installed this on my machine with a high-DPI display. Although the installation itself went OK, when Genie Timeline Home was run it would not scale properly no matter the "compatibility" settings, and so was not usable. See comment #12 on last year's page:

https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/genie-timeline-home-10-2/

Today I compared the size and "hash" values for the file "setup.exe" extracted from the GOTD-downloaded ZIP file, and found it to be identical to last year's version.

Although their support page "What’s new in Genie Timeline 10 – Genie9 Wiki" (February 23, 2015) states "Updated ;and fully compatible with Windows 10 latest updates":

https://gtlwiki.genie9.com/index.php/whats-new-in-gtl-10/

...last year I received a reply from them "Regarding your issue, we're well aware of this problem. Our team is working on it and it will be fixed in the near future". But apparently they have made no progress to fix it (or perhaps the Trial v10.0.3.300 download available directly from the Zoolz website has the fix).

It would be useful to learn the version installed as today's GOTD offer (since I can't run it properly).

HMarx,

Found the answer to my own question: looking again at the "Properties" for the GOTD-downloaded file setup.exe, I see the same "10.0.3.300" as the version offered as a Trial downnload on the Zoolz site.

So frustrating...followed instructions, went to web page and filled out form, it told me I would receive email with key. No email, no key...checked spam, etc. Tried another email address, still no key. I wasted 45 minutes just trying to get a key. Why do it this way?

how and where do we enter the license?

when the software is opened on my PC, i don't see any
of what is shown on genie site

Karen,

From comments during the 2019 offer (asumming not much has changed):

"Kindly note that you need to follow the 3-steps for backup configuration process in order to configure the backup as you need and to reach the Dashboard window of Genie Timeline where you will be able to find the "Enter License Key" button."

Reply   |   Comment by HMarx  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Karen, Okay.... here's what you need to do. Just keep clicking on that little right arrow at the bottom until you get to a page which looks like the one from this site https://gtlwiki.genie9.com/index.php/register-genie-timeline-home/.

You might also want to hit the pause button when it tries to do something.

I however do agree that this was hard to discover and not the best part of their design.

this is TERRIBLE.. i finally found the place to enter the registration
and i have to guess the correct number of letters/numbers that go into each box;.. the code i received has one hyphen and 4 separate boxes..

why on earth wouldn't it just be set up to paste the license code in???

that would be my first recommendation - along with a simple spot right up front to enter the registration code

I am confused. Exactly what does it do? Thanks.

Reply   |   Comment by Morgan Pierce  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

Morgan Pierce , it backs up the files you choose. In other words, it copies those files to another drive (it's best to copy to an external drive and disconnect that drive when the backup is done).

If you don't understand how important it is to backup files that you already have saved, think this: it only takes one disk failure to lose all your data... and disks fail regularly -- a laptop disk typically lasts only 5 or so years.

Reply   |   Comment by Laura Nass  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

In addition to disk failures, there are also the possibilities of fire or flood damage.

The best way to protect your data from loss, ideally, is to make a regular backup on an external drive (or USB stick) and put that drive somewhere else, such as a friend's or relative's house or a safe deposit box in a bank. That way, in case of fire, your data are still safe in that backup.

Morgan Pierce , As a user I can tell you that when installed and configured (simple), it first takes a full backup of the directories and devices you selected, then takes incremental (just changes) from that point on. It will add a sequence number to the file name for multiple versions of the same file over time. It has saved me more than once from just accidental deletions or "save file" errors I have made.

I have used Genie Timeline for years and love it. I especially like that you can store in native Windows form so it's all readable outside of Genie.
