Tried running it o Windows 11 and it opens then says 'Updating to the latest version', restarts then does exactly the same again. I tried again overnight, but it doesn't do a clean restart and got my laptop to hang.

After installing, it states that it is updating the software, has a percent meter, once it gets to 100% it closes out, relaunches and repeatedly says it is updating without stopping.

Thankfully meanwhile the list of partially free and totally free video converter programs is very long and some of them are really good working. How good or bad conversion works depends majorly on the specific converting task.
For example bread and butter converters that produce good results come from Tipard, Digiarty, Wonderfox, Leawo and many others.
Most video converters come with their own huge package of video codecs and do not interfer with other converters. There are also good totally free alternatives like Handbreak.
How good or bad a converter is you may find out finally if the conversion worked correctly or failed with some unexpected errors. Beside the quality of the converted video the conversion speed is also an important factor. Some programs use specialized CPU/GPU acceleration and work with siginficantly higher speeds.
And then there is also a long list of some dubious programs that simple do not work like you would await it and you should better stay away from using. My first thought of most negative examples is SoftOrbits video converter, it litters your system with many thousands of files without any visible reason.
And then there are programs that do not even start. Today here we have one of those examples. Last Giveaway of this program Geekersoft Video Converter 3.7.21 from 3. August 2023 https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/geekersoft-video-converter/ crashed on program start on my Windows 8.1. When I have time to test I will try out this version 4.6.24 and look if it might work this time. Another comment here says it will not work on Windows 10, maybe it will work on earlier versions this time. Let´s stay tuned.

This time this version of the program worked on my Windows 8.1!
Start and registration worked without any problems.

Conversion progress of the running task is shown with a very small cirlcle that becomes a small green circle over time. The program stubbornly tries to stay in front of your windows. Windows size is fixed. If you want to stop conversion before it ends naturally, there is only one way: to close the whole program with the X and it wil stop. Very strange behaviour.

Under the hood it is a more or less well done very basic frontend for FFMPEG (which is open source). No bells and whistles here, no preview, no cropping, no cutting, no effects. The best thing is that the ffmpeg parameteres for the running task are shown in the task manager and so you can see what it is doing. It comes with FFMPEG from 29.4.2024.

Refuses to run on Windows 10. Just presents a blank rectangle. Tried multiple installs. Same result.

Ray Rooney, seems to work fine in Win10 for me. Would not work properly in my VMs -- went into a loop trying to self-update -- so I booted into Win10 & it fired up just fine. FWIW, installs with folders in Program Files (x86) & Users\ [UserName]\ AppData\ Roaming\ with minimal new registry entries.

I have the same problem. The program starts, I select the files to convert, and then it freezes—end of story. Good thing I didn’t have to pay for it.
