In some cases the developers of the software might only agree to participate on the condition that the period permitting the software to be installed is limited to 24 hours. The current system is how the GOTD team provide for such a restriction.
Should users try to abuse or bypass this, those developers will likely move towards activation based on their own servers - which means they can disable the GOTD codes when the giveaway has finished. (Or just avoid GOTD altogether).
As anyone who has been around GOTD for a few years will know - 9 out of 10 giveaways that are reliant on developers emailing individual codes, or activating on their own servers results in epic fail - usually because they cannot cope or haven't planned for the volume of registrations. Imagine if every second day we had one of "those" giveaways.
Be satisfied with the Giveaway that is provided. In six months (or whenever) you decide you cannot live without the program - if it is really that good - just go register it, or find a freeware/open source alternative.
Remember the other side of the equation - getting to use commercial software for free through giveaways, is that if the software is good, and you continue to use it - you should support the developers who wrote it - and buy a license (and be eligible for the latest versions and support).
Many of the developers who participate with GOTD aren't big companies like Microsoft, but they are just individuals working & trying to earn a dollar to put food on their tables and to look after their families.
Instead of trying to work out ways to screw them and get around the system that is in place to give them a "fair go", if their software is so good that you need to reinstall after you reformat of buy a new PC - then spend a few dollars and register the software with them.
If the software really is too expensive - talk to the developers, sometimes there is something you can do for them - perhaps for a discount or even an entirely free license.
- Translating the software into a new language
- Correcting Language / Spelling in the Program or on their site.
- Write a review of the software and publish it on their blog.
- Design new icons or a logo for the program.
- Help with the documentation or write tutorials on using the program.
- Beta test and provide good feedback to the developer
- Make useful suggestions on ideas for new features.
- Ideas for new programs.
- and lots of other things that help.
So no, giveawayoftheday.com doesn't think that reinstalling old giveaways is okay. In the long run it can be very destructive and damaging to the prospects of some developers from participating - and by not supporting software developers (at least the better ones) makes it a little harder for them to stay motivated to release more of the software that we like.
