ClanBomber 2Mb
ClanBomber is an excellent 2D Bomberman clone. The project is ongoing, but latterly, the most recent version isn’t available for Windows, as the authors decided to concentrate on Mac and Linux platforms. That doesn't mean the Windows version is inferior, on the contrary it's a very well finished and remarkably polished game. The Windows version 1.05 is still freely available, though just not at the project website.
It can be played multi-player and 3 -8 players is most fun, or just single player against the computer (with up to 7 AI opponents).
Bomberman is a strategic, maze-based video game originally developed by Hudson Soft. The original game was published in 1983 and new games in the series are still being published to this day. Bomberman became famous on the Nintendo.
Simply put, you go round a maze, dropping bombs to blow up the grid or opponents and trying to keep out of the way of other bombs. Bombs blow up along horizontal and vertical open spaces. There are also various power-ups that usually help, but can also be a hindrance. The power-ups can increase the power and range of your and your opponents bombs and in ClanBomber there are skateboards which increase your move speed when you get one.
In ClanBomber, to play single player, at Player Setup, note or change your player ‘skin’ and set the controller to keyboard, looking at the indicated control keys. Repeat for other players. If you don’t set up a player, you can start and view a demo with the AI playing itself as 8 AI players! The game plays full-screen.
I say note your player skin ‘appearance’, as the game is more than a bit manic with all the other AI or real opponents, and otherwise you might not know who you are playing as! Arrow keys and 'Enter' in menu, 'Esc' key once menu option selected. 'Enter' key to start game. One of the keyboard options is Arrow keys to move and ‘Enter’ to drop bombs. But get out of the line of fire of bombs, whether your own or your opponents bombs! One thing that might confuse is that even when you are blown up and de-mobilized or blown up completely, the game continues to play until the AI’s sort each other out, unless you press the ‘esc’ key to end the current game!
Alternative maze skin (4 of 4)
You can change various options, such as if bombs shake the screen or not, and you can always turn your speakers down if you find the sound annoying. You can play as a team with some AI opponents if you wish or team up with real players. You can customize just about any aspect of the game. For example, you can choose between random or set start positions, or you can play through the maps or play a selected map.
The game graphics are pretty good and the sound is fine. There’s also a map editor to add to your enjoyment, and you can customize most game maps, or create your own. 12 out of 32 maps are available initially, some are for less players. You can edit the maps.disabled file manually in Notepad if you want to enable more maps instead of earning them, just remove the map name(s) from the file and re-save.
All in all, ClanBomber is a great fun game, though some versions of Bomberman are less manic, and more strategic! ClanBomber is manic and strategic! I think you might be hard-pressed to find a better Bomberman version than ClanBomber!
