Dear Michelle,

Welcome to the IT PRO newsletter for Friday 20 August 2010.

Intel has agreed to shell out a massive $7.68 billion to acquire McAfee in a deal that will cause more than a ripple in the security sphere.

The purchase is reflective of the growing importance of security in online computing, according to Intel, and the pair will work on product concepts that will cover the range of protection required in the modern day world.

Meanwhile, McAfee’s 6,100 employees and range of popular security products will soon find themselves under the wing of a new owner.

It is undeniably a lot of money to spend on a firm, but is it worth it? Why has Intel invested so much in McAfee? And how much of an impact will it make on the security landscape?

Now McAfee should disappear behind a cloud once and for all :)

BuBBy, if I read what Renee' James said (on the article found at Idunno's link, above your post) correctly, McAfee isn't going to be disappearing, as you suggested it should, although I too think it should. You couldn't pay me to use that software after what happened to my computer, a couple of times, a couple of years ago when I was (proudly, I might add) running it on there. Even my former ISP, who used to give us McAfee as part of our subscription, dumped it. They now give out Norton.

I hate it when new PC's come bundled with McAfee. First thing I always tell someone to do when they get a brand new pc is delete McAfee and use something (almost anything is better! lol) else.

Maybe Intel can help them turn it around, but like you two, I wouldn't be sad to see them disappear.

Yes, I too remember the days when I was a Mcafee sheep. After so many problems with 7.0 on Windows 98 I got rid of it and I said I would never use them again, but I did. I don't think I paid for it. I just got it through some promotions or trials or AOL. Right now I am using Comcast's Norton Security Suite and like it.

Comcast dumped Mcafee, but I don't know why. They used them for a few years. Ever since they started giving antivirus/firewall out to customers for free. I had Comcast one time before and they didn't give us anything. I switched To Verizon and you got Msn which gave you Mcafee. This is the first time an isp has given me Norton that I been with.

I totally agree! That is the first thing I do when setting up a new computer for my self or someone else. McAfee is such a pain and it does not work that well.

This may be opening a real can of worms but what do other people think is the "best" one? I prefer to use Avast along with Commando Firewall on my computer.

I remember when Comcast first started offering McAfee for free. I took advantange of it then because I was fed up with Norton. I had so many problems with the upgrade to Systemworks 2005 and then Norton dropped support of ME long before Microsoft did so I was stuck at the 2005 level. It took me 5 days to do that upgrade where it should have been less than 10 minutes!

I dropped McAfee after it got to be so much of a resource hog and changed what it allowed so that I could not use the internet at all! Microsoft still supported ME at that point and I was working with them on how to get things to work on my machine. I found the answer myself - uninstall McAfee! I switched to a freebie anti-virus at that point. My boot time was cut to maybe a quarter of the time without McAfee loading, too!

Since Comcast now supports Norton AND I've heard that Norton has finally gotten it's act together and corrected the major problems they had, I might go back to them if I get frustrated with Avira.

I got Norton Systemworks 2003. The only Systemworks at Staples I ever got and liked it, but it was a bit expensive. I use to like Norton Utilities back in the day and bought Norton Utilities in 2001 from Symantec (get the disk). I had so many problems getting the download with Digitalriver and Norton Utilities kept my ancient computer working good. Nowadays I wouldn't use Norton Utilities, because I think it got bad and I think a lot of the tools point you to stuff in Windows.

I wouldn't be unhappy if both Norton and McAfee disappeared. When I got a new laptop a couple of years ago it came with Norton installed so I gave it a short test drive as I'd heard it had improved. It's still bloated and if something breaks you're SOL on a number of levels, not to mention I think it's absurd what they charge when there are a couple of very good free programs like Avast and Avira out there. There are also a couple of very good firewall programs.

I do hope Intel doesn't come to regret paying way too much money for the turkey that is McAfee and take it out on us the consumer.

I got tired of paying McAfee an annual fee and it did cause me problems, so upon the advice of many in this forum, I've totally switched over to Comodo Internet Security. Use both their anti virus and their firewall, and haven't had any problems at all! And best of all, it's free!

I use Norton Security Suite. It's free to Comcast users. It does an excellent job and Norton does offer support for it. Symantec even called my house one day when it wasn't working the way I wanted it to. The password log in wasn't working right and it still doesn't work right, but Symantec said on some pages it may not work right, but the Symantec person was on my computer two hours (remotely connected) trying to get it to work right and he couldn't.

He tried very hard. I was getting tired and wanted to go to bed. I was kind of hoping he would give up.
