Mysteries of Horus (Alawar free game of the month) Failing!

Does anybody else have this problem?

I downloaded and installed the game last month when it first was listed in the Gamebox. It worked for a day or two and then failed with the message that "game.wrp.exe" failed.

I had to uninstall the game to get Gamebox to let me re-download and install it. Again, it worked fine.

I hadn't played for several days and then tried it tonight and it is again failing with the "game.wrp.exe" failure message. I'm not even getting into the game!

I emailed Alawar and they responded within a few hours requesting me to run DxDiag. I did and sent back the 50 Kb txt file. It seems to show no errors.

I sent them the file and I'm back to waiting.

With almost 50 Alawar games and only this one doing this, I can't see it as my system. Does anybody have any ideas what's happening? Is this happening to anybody else?

Chele - contact them. Explain the problem. Knowing that there are multiple people with the same problem may help them identify and fix it.

Oddly - the MyPlayCity version doesn't seem to have the problem - it's the wrapper that's the problem, not the game.

Try PMing me. I'm pretty good at figuring out this sort of stuff.

Anyways, for an initial analysis: When does the game crash? Immediately after launching or when the game loads for a bit? And what's the exception code? In these cases, DxDiag is almost useless. And try lowering your screen resolution, if you have anything higher than 1024*768. I found quite a few Alawar games crashing when the resolution is too high.

I'm having the same experience with this game. I haven't tried to play it again for a while, but as I recall the "game.wrp.exe" failure message appears right away, before any sign of the game loading. Then if I remove the game folder so that the Alawar game box "reinstalls" it, I can play it again.

Like some other games, it doesn't show up in "Programs and Features" or in Revo Uninstaller, so I don't uninstall it, just delete the game's folder from my hard drive. I had a similar problem a long time ago with a GameHouse ad-supported game, where it would play fine but crash next time I attempted to run it. With that one, I could delete the folder containing the saved game and start a new one. I ended up removing that game altogether though, as it was a time management game and was sort of pointless when you had to start a new game every time.

Starting a new game every time doesn't so much render Mysteries of Horus pointless, it's just a pain in the neck. Maybe I should try just deleting the folder marked "saves" within the Mysteries of Horus folder, and see how that works.

(Alawar game folders are labeled by number, not game name, within the Alawar folder, but it's easy to discover which is which by looking inside each folder. On my hard drive, Mysteries of Horus is labeled "2221".)

The first time I tried the game, I got the normal "wrapper" with the "Thank you for your Registration" message. When it failed and I uninstalled/re-installed, it worked again but went directly to the game (no wrapper).

I am getting no error code. I am simply getting the message that "game.wrp.exe has stopped working". It is almost immediately displayed. I believe it would be before the wrapper would have displayed.

Maud, I don't see this game in Revo either. However, knowing Alawar games, you should never just delete the game. If you can get it to come up at all, you can still use Revo-uninstaller by using "Hunter Mode". Or, at the very least, go to where it is installed and run the uninstall program from there. I checked, there is one!

I got a response from Alawar. It's a normal "canned" response that doesn't match the situation. They say to upgrade my graphics driver. If it works on install and for a day or two after that (after reboots), it's NOT my graphics driver! I replied with that message.

GMMan, I'll send you a PM. If you can get this fixed, I know I will be grateful and I'm sure others will be following me to your door! However, in this case, it may take a while to be sure it's fixed. :)

I do indeed have an outdated driver. I can't see how it will affect things but I've downloaded the new one (NVIDIA from 175.21 to 258.96) and will install it soon.

Then I'll check the game. If it works, I'll probably fall off my chair in shock!

@Maud: The numbering only exists if you install with the GameBox. If you install manually, it installs into the Alawar Program Files folder under its game name.

Regarding graphic cards: My super old 2006 Intel Integrated graphics will run this game full screen but a little slow (and pixelated ugly), but won't display anything in windowed mode. The trick to fixing it is to disable hardware acceleration (because there is no dedicated graphics hardware).

I did as Alawar suggested and upgraded my graphics driver. Vista's Device Manager insisted that it was up to date but I knew better.

However, as expected the upgrade did not affect anything.

Gmmman - I'll follow your suggestions later. I don't have time to do it right now. I did tell Alawar that their suggestion didn't work (at least I got to stay on my chair!)

The problem with that is Alawar's wrapper might not be able to find and launch the game.

GMMan - check you PM. I tried what you suggested and the count of "successful" runs unregistered was ZERO! I then tried to run from Gamebox - failed. I tried to run in admin mode - failed.

I tried one more thing - XP sp2 compatibility mode - that has worked twice now! I lost ALL my stats (I even had to re-register my name to the game) but it has loaded twice now.

No wrapper window for or aft either!

It's continuing to work in XP compatibility mode. I wonder if some vista update along the way has caused the problem. I checked the site and it does not say vista. It just lists PIII 750 as the minimum configuration.

I have NOT told Alawar I've gotten it to work. I'm waiting to see how long before they suggest it. (evil smilie desperately needed here)

I think I finally got my display settings back. That's the roughest part of this. When I upgraded the driver, it changed all the settings to defaults and then left it to me to get back what I had!

I downloaded it from MyplayCity a couple of weeks ago and after reading the above comments I tried it again a few hours ago and it works fine. Running XP SP3 if that helps any.

Since I got it to work in XP compatibility mode, you should have no problem. I now suspect that some update to Vista caused the problem. Why it worked after the re-install, I don't know. I'll know if it's really fixed in a few days. If it continues to work, fine. If not, I may go back to MPC's version.

I have a friend who has Vista and is playing MPC's version with no problem. The something in the build that Alawar has of the game.

I'm still waiting for Alawar to suggest I run in that mode -- especially with these public posts as a hint!

They need to mark that the game does not work in Vista or above without the compatibility mode.

Dragonlair, I changed to XP compatability mode and now am having no problem, also, so thank you for that info. Also, I have not been able to find games not independently installed in Revo's 'Hunter Mode' either, but I did not think to look in the game's folder for an uninstaller. You are right, it is there! So thanks for that tip, also. In future I will look for that first.

Would you believe that it failed again? I was playing it off and on - stopping and starting to see if the fix was "permanent" and it wasn't.

It only allows me to play a certain number of time (I'm not sure what the limit is) and then it fails no matter what I do!

I'm gonna uninstall it (one way or another) and re-install it from MyPlayCity. That may have the irritation of opening Firefox when the game ends but at least it works!

note -- I did get an answer from Alawar. It was an apology and an offer of another game. That's the honorable thing to do - with all the work I've done the past 2 days.

I have worked with computers as a user and as a programmer for over 30 years. I have never heard of a program doing as this does - work for a few times and with nothing on the system changing (and I do mean NOTHING), it fails and then continues to fail. The only possible thing I can think of is this is a VERY old game. MyPlayCity must have a newer build of the game.

Looking at the temp txt file of the error message(which is added when you send an error report), it does look like an incompatibly issue of "game.wrp.exe".
Running Alawar's game in windows 98 mode on XP SP3 now.. So far so good.(LOL)

(...some antivirus might even block double extensions like that)

Again, no need for that with the sponsored MyPlayCity version.

Robert, It worked for me in compatibility mode for awhile as well. Then that quit, too. The MyPlayCity version has no ads in the game. It simply opens your browser to their site when you end. It does not change your home page.

Obviously, MyPlayCity has a newer build for the game as they list Vista as supported. All Alawar listed was a minuimum of a 750 MHz Pentium III. Now THAT's OLD!

I've got no problems now. I'm thoroughly enjoying my "reward" for all my trouble - The Treasures of Montezuma 2. It's even better than the first one but plays very much the same.
